Joined by actor, writer and podcaster Michael Paul Smith, Dan and Mike take it all the way back to the original Islanders villain who changed the way the team was perceived for all time. The three talk about Muller's decorated pre-Islanders career, the franchise-wrecking trade that brought him - very reluctantly - to the Islanders and the surprisingly lucrative trade that shipped him out (that was then later also ruined). They re-watch the legendary video introducing the team in their Fisherman jerseys with Muller getting booed like he owed everyone in Nassau Coliseum money, find the connections between Muller's rejection and future Islanders deserters, and discover his clout-chasing final season with the Leafs, Panthers and Stars, who were noticeably not the Islanders. Finally they cast a show about the Muller saga and choose which actors have the chops to bring the dastardly antagonist to life. We head back to the rink and catch up with Pierre McGuire from NBC Sports SN. Pierre discusses his beginnings in hockey in Montreal and how he and his brothers developed their passion for the game of hockey. He moved to New Jersey and went to Bergen Catholic and played hockey for Tony Karcich and hockey for John DeCarlo. He said Tony Karcich had a huge influence in his life with sports. He helped developed his ethos for hard work in football, he made you "tough". Pierre said he was great motivator for all the players. He also credits the McGovern family with his development. Jack McGovern who played football at Holy Cross was another person helped him. When it came time to attend college it came down to St. Lawerence and Hobart. Pierre chose Hobart because he could play football and hockey. He even played baseball at one point. Hobart was the perfect fit for him on all aspects of development as a young man. In 1984 after playing one year of professional hockey in Europe he was offered an invite to the New Jersey Devils training camp. The team had only been here two years and was still struggling to find an identity. Was a very tough training camp. They had players in camp who would help build the team for the future, Ken Daneyko, Kirk Muller, John MacLean were some of the young talent in camp that year. Pierre said he asked Marshall Johnston who was he GM at the time where did they see him in the plans for the team. He told him that they saw him as a call up player. He felt it was time to give up playing and go into coaching. Pierre headed back to Hobart and was the assistant coach of the hockey team and loved it. He learned a lot and then wound up headed to Babson College. He spent three years at Babson with Steve Sterling and then got the opportunity to head to St. Lawrence with Joe Marsh. His life would change there when he was running practice one day and a legend entered his office. Standing before him was Scotty Bowman. He introduced himself and Scotty told him he loved his practice. They talked and Scotty said if I ever go back to the NHL would like to take you with me. Pierre would head to Pittsburgh with Scotty and win two Stanley Cups and he learned a great deal from Scotty and others in Pittsburgh. The one thing Scotty stressed was preparation in life. Every aspect. Leave nothing to chance. Cover everything. He talked about Mario Lemieux and how you don't coach him. You maintain him. Give him information that he can use in the games. He will process it and raise his game on what you gave him. Bryan Trottier was another player who was like a coach. The way he saw the game and what needed to be done was amazing. He knew the players and league and what needed to be done in the game. We end segment one with Pierre's time in Hartford and how he ended up becoming the head coach of the Whalers. One thing we did talk about was mentoring younger players and coaches and how that is a lost art in today's world.
Last show of the week and we got a doozy for you! The Welcome Matt kicks things off taking a look at a brother act that could potentially be united by the Canucks. Perhaps they can land Quinn’s brother Luke with the ninth overall pick, but if not, maybe Elias Pettersson’s brother Emil would be a good fit for the organization, who is a UFA and played the last few seasons in Sweden. Long time Winnipeg Jets broadcaster Brian Munz joins next and gives his thoughts on the Mark Scheifele suspension, the atmosphere in Winnipeg and who is expected to slot in for the Jets this evening. Our Friday Canucks insider Rick Dhaliwal follows Hashtags - the best and worst of Twitter, and tells us what he’s hearing about Kirk Muller potentially joining the Canucks coaching staff, the latest on the Ian Clark negotiations, what UFA’s the team are thinking about keeping, what is holding up the Sedin’s joining the front office, who he thinks will be available at ninth overall and what the expansion draft could look like for the Canucks. The Price is Right focuses in on the Canadian Men’s national soccer team, who have their best shot at qualifying for a World Cup in decades with this youth crop of stars that includes Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David. Jeff Paterson follows Tell Me I’m Wrong for his final hit of the week and says that if the Canucks were able to draft Luke Hughes he hopes that its because they feel he’s the best fit, and not because he’s Quinn’s brother. J Pat expands on his thoughts on the Scheifele hit and the Jets forwards response to the hit today, stating that he’s not buying what Scheifele is selling. We play Hot Take for the final time this week and then head into to the weekend with all the Errors & Omissions. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Kirk Muller played in the NHL for 19 seasons and has been behind the bench since 2011. He joins Jeff and Elliotte on the podcast (42:00) to talk about Montreal’s impressive play in the bubble last season, how to find success as a player in a market like Montreal, his thoughts on Nick Suzuki and […]
In episode 139 of the Glass and Out Podcast, we welcome Stanley Cup champ and NHL coach Kirk Muller. Ask anyone who has had a chance to meet or be coached by Muller, and they'd likely tell you that he fits the profile of a "modern coach" to a tee. With the shift from a dictatorship style of leadership, to one where the leader seeks to connect with their team, he has made relationship building a priority in every stop he's made throughout his career. Muller had a remarkable NHL playing career of 19 seasons and nearly 1500 games, highlighted by scoring the Stanley Cup clinching goal for Montreal in Game 5 of the 1993 Final. Following retirement, he would get his first shot at coaching with Queen's University in 2005. After just one season, he'd make the jump to the NHL and join his former club in Montreal as an assistant coach. In total, Muller has spent 10 of 15 seasons behind an NHL bench as an assistant with the Canadiens. His lone head coaching gig came with the Carolina Hurricanes for three seasons (2011-2014). During his career, Muller has had the chance to work with and learn from an incredible list of coaches. That includes Lou Lamoriello, Pat Burns, Dave Tippett, Ken Hitchcock, Bob Gainey, Guy Carbonneau, Jim Rutherford, Alain Vigneault, Doug Armstrong, and Claude Julien. After being relieved of his assistant coaching duties with Montreal earlier this season, Muller is currently without a coaching job. But with his resume, knowledge of the game and ability to connect with his players, there's no doubt that he'll find his way back to the NHL sooner rather than later. Find out how he approaches relationship building with his players, what he sees as the pillars to a successful program.

NHL Topics: Here’s our weekly snapshot.News:Fans are returning to the NHL rinks. Rates are going down, but all of NY state is allowing 10% in all arenas. Rangers had fans on Thursday. Isles and Sabres on Sunday. Canada will probably not have fans this season (3% vaccinated in Canada, want 70%). Claude Julien was fired as head coach of the Canadiens on Wednesday despite his team being in a playoff spot at 9-5-4. Won only 2 of their last 8 and were 8 pts behind the Leafs for 1st. Dominique Ducharme was named interim coach and the team also added Alex Burrows to the staff. The Habs also fired Kirk Muller who served as HC while Julien had surgery for a heart procedure while in the playoffs. GM Marc Bergevin is in the hot seat as well after an extremely busy off season (added Allen, Edmundson, Toffoli, Anderson, etc.) as he only has this current year on his contract. Ducharme is considered an up and coming coach, but how will the organization view him in the offseason? Who’s next? DJ Smith in Ott, Blashill in DET, Krueger in Buff, Torts in CBJ, Hynes in Nashville?Sabres star C Jack Eichel was removed from the lineup during warmups on Thursday against the Devils. Coach Ralph Krueger said it was an injury. Eichel came out and contradicted his HC’s statement and said it was an injury from the Devils game on Tuesday and the team knew he would be out. Eichel returned in Sunday’s loss to the Flyers after missing 2 games. Eichel was also the #2 ranked player on the big board. Many execs think he will be traded by the deadline and a few said the Rangers definitely. Darren Dreger reported that Eichel had officially asked for a trade. Per Dreger “There’s some who wonder if Eichel’s hurt, but his body language and the way he’s playing doesn’t look good at all”. Could he pull a James Harden?Another Buffalo player that continues to have issues with the team is Jeff Skinner. He was sat for 3 consecutive games (returned Sunday and skated 12 mins) and his agent, Don Meehan (one of the top guys out there) had a talk with GM Kevyn Adams on their options. Skinner has a NMC and is owed 54 million over the next 6 seasons. If they were to buy him out, they would owe 37 million over 12 years. Skinner might have to waive his NMC or allow more teams into the list if he wants out. Panarin still a week away at least as he deals with the fallout from the Russian story about his domestic violence incident. Many players, the KHL and law enforcement officials have come out and said it is not true. Many NHL execs, including Steve Yzerman, want the draft to be pushed back so the 2021 prospects have a chance to play. The teams also want scouts in the building. Lundqvist posted a video of his skating and making saves. Says it will be months before he can say if he will play again. Just good to see him out there and in pads. Pretty funny occurrence last week. There was a 3:36 sec delayed penalty against the Kings vs the Blues. Possibly a new record (not recorded). Torry Krug with 2:53 sec shift. Elliot Friedman relayed a story about Gary Galley and Rob Blake. Galley was playing for the Kings and had a shift that was closing in on 3 minutes. Both him and his D partner were gassed and couldn’t get the puck out of their zone. Blake jumped on the ice and took a too many men penalty. Galley asked him why he did that and Blake said “I just felt really bad for you”. Brett Connolly put on waivers by Cats. Oilers add Stalock off waivers. Binnington went off on SJ players. Went over to the bench after Sharks players made comments. Then attached players on the way out, including goalie Devan Dubnyk. STL is fiery and doing quite well in the absence of Parayko. Jordan Kyrou at 5 on 5 pts per 60 is one of the best in the league. 3 stars of the week:Vasilevskiy - 79 saves on 81 shots, 3-0, .67GAA, .975svpct, 2SO against Canes (x2) and Stars. 2nd behind Fleury on the season in both GAA and SVPCT. P Kane - league leading 3-5-8pts in 3 wins last week, including 400th goal. 2nd in NHL in pts with 11-23-34 in 23 games (McDavid with 40pts). 9th US born player and 100th overall player with 400G. Zuccarello - 2-6-8pts in 4 games to help Wild to 2nd place in West. In 7 games this season, Zucc has 3-8-11pts. NHL announced its fan skills at home contest on TikTok/Instagram. March 1 to April 28, fans can submit videos of themselves performing hockey skills of all levels in any of 5 categories: shootout, accuracy, celly, trick shot and stickhandling. I suggest a video of Steve backhanding a puck to my groin, JJ dangling Kevin or Valvano uppercutting someone (accuracy). Or Dean trucking Schmim. Top Shot phenomenonInjuries:Samsonov and Ristolainen back from Covid protocol. Rumors: Gaudreau is a hot name. 1 yr left for under 7 million. Rumors that Matthew Tkachuk teammates are frustrated by his antics (puck flip and how there is always something with him every game). Thoughts he could be on the block.Habs got calls about Price (Oilers and Avs were the names per sources)...would the Habs deal another HOF goalie to the Avs?Vancouver/Ducks in serious discussions about Vitanen for Danton Heinen. Also Getzlaf will only be dealt if he wants.Hosted By Billy Dean, Little Steve, and SchwimLive In Primetime Radio Virtual Studio#NHL
Jack and Rob are back to talk about the sports action in the week including College Basketball, the NBA All-Star reserve selections, the shorthanded Toronto Raptors, the Montreal Canadiens firing Claude Julien and Kirk Muller, and the NHL.com Trophy Tracker per division. Last Word on Habs Pod: Montreal Canadiens in Freefall This week, the guys catch up on the latest Habs news after being off for a week. The Habs have been in complete disarray the last 10 games. So much so that it cost head coach Claude Julien and associate coach Kirk Muller their jobs. While nobody is wishing anyone ill, it seemed overdue for a change in the Habs dressing room. Too many consistent issues that plagued the Canadiens through multiple seasons could no longer be ignored. Now it's up to interim coach, Dominique Ducharme, to right the ship. In his first two games, there were some troubling signs. Still, it is such a unique season, is it even possible to judge Ducharme or what he wants to do when there is limited practice time. The guys will impart their wisdom to see if they can help the new head coach navigate this difficult situation. One thing is for sure, Ducharme will need some of the Habs best players to find their form, otherwise, it might be a long season. If the Habs continue to spiral, one thing is for sure, Marc Bergevin's seat will become incredibly hot. All this and the Habs current skid, what is going on with Philip Danault and Carey Price, language issues, late-night not well thought through conspiracy theories, and much much more! Tune in!
