While the Pittsburgh Penguins' bottom six remains a definite work in progress, it appears Mike Sullivan listens to this very podcast, as he has made some long-awaited changes to his defensive pairings. Marcus Pettersson has been promoted to the top pair, P.O Joseph has moved into the top four alongside Jeff Petry, and Brian Dumoulin was demoted to the third pair to play with Jan Rutta. A 60-minute hockey game against a Washington Capitals team that effectively iced an ECHL lineup due to injuries in their own right is not enough to draw any concrete conclusions, however... the Penguins finally snapped their seven-game losing streak Wednesday night, winning 4-1. This week's podcast sees Robbie and Garrett give their impressions on the win that stopped the skid, plus a massive 12-question mailbag that sees them touch on a variety of topics, from Mario Lemieux's number being retired league-wide to a conversation about blink-182. Locked On Penguins - Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Penguins

A win? In this economy? Yes, it actually happened as the Pittsburgh Penguins took down the Washington Capitals, 4-1 to snap their seven-game skid. Hunter starts off the show by touching on why this was a great team performance and how EVERYONE chipped in. He looks at how the team got goal-scoring from everywhere (not just the top six for a change) and how that really paved the way toward a win. He then dissects Casey DeSmith's game and looks at how he was able to keep them in the game, especially during those first 5-7 minutes of the first period. Hunter also shouts out the defensive core for really stepping up when Rutta and POJ went down with injuries since that forced other players to play more minutes. After that, Hunter gives his top player performances and starts with two bottom six players. After that, he looks at how Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin led by example, plus how Jeff Petry had his best game in quite a long time. Finally, Hunter gets to the listener takeaways and touches on how Ty Smith could make his Penguins debut if some of these injuries are serious. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! I know, I know, it's another loss. Still, there are some positive things to take from it! That's precisely what Hunter starts with regarding Monday's show. He looks at the positives of the loss on Saturday and how the Penguins deserved a lot better. He looks at how they dominated territorially and how it just came down to Martin Jones playing his tail off against the Penguins yet again. He then discusses the core players and how they've been doing everything for the team lately. He points out that they can't be blamed for this losing streak because they're the ones who have shown up and are continuing to justify their cap hits. After that, he looks at the bottom six and why it's a unit that continues to fail. He touches on why nobody outside of Josh Archibald has been scoring down there as of late and how that needs to change in a big way if the Penguins want to turn this around. He then addresses the Jeff Petry struggles and why he thinks that eventually, it IS going to turn around. Still, he does have some blame for Ron Hextall because he hasn't done enough to fill out this team to the best of his abilities. Finally, Hunter examines the lineup and what changes Mike Sullivan could make for Wednesday's game against Washington. All that, plus much more on this episode of Locked On Penguins. It's an off day and one that was badly needed for the Pittsburgh Penguins. With that, Hunter is joined by Rob Rossi of The Athletic and they go all into the Penguins' struggles. They first touch on Brian Dumoulin and what the Penguins can do to help him out. Should he get bottom-pairing minutes? Is he going to be scratched by Mike Sullivan? If he comes off the top pairing, who should replace him? After that, the two look at Jeff Petry's season so far and why the Penguins need A LOT more out of him. Is he going to figure it out? What's missing from his game? The two then look at the struggles of the special team's units and what the Penguins need to do to correct them (especially the PK). Hunter wonders if the PK just figures it out, then that could get this machine rolling once again. Rob also makes a great suggestion about who the Penguins should run their power play through more often before they look at the goaltending struggles. What does Casey DeSmith struggle the most with? Is Tristan Jarry going to get back in form? Finally, the two end the show with a discussion on the supporting cast as a whole, plus a look at if the Fenway Sports Group could consider a management change if this continues. The Pittsburgh Penguins needed to respond after Monday night's showing and boy did they ever. They got off to a slow start but they gave the Kings a 6-1 drubbing before this was all said and done. Hunter starts this recap episode by looking at how the goaltending on both sides was the biggest reason why the Penguins won this game. He looks at Tristan Jarry's performance and how he was able to keep the Penguins in it during the first period and all of the timely saves that he made throughout. He then flips the script and looks at how the Los Angeles Kings got putrid goaltending from both Cal Peterson and Jonathan Quick that gave the Penguins this win. After that, he goes into some of the players who had much better performances compared to Monday's game. He looks at Jeff Petry & how we're already starting to see how much of an upgrade he is on the second pairing before transitioning over to the entire top line. Was that vintage Sidney Crosby that we just watched? He also breaks down Guentzel's third goal of the season & how it was a classic Guentzel goal before shouting out Kris Letang, Jeff Carter, and Brian Dumoulin for much better performances. Finally, Hunter ends the show with Mike Sullivan's 300th win & how this team continues to play super hard for him while also taking a listener takeaway. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Well, folks, we can finally talk about real, meaningful hockey games. And that's exactly what we're doing on this week's PensBurgh Podcast. As of this recording, the Penguins have played three games, own a 2-0-1 record, and have looked very strong out of the gate. But it's important to not jump to too many conclusions through such a small sample size. Both Sidney Crosby (two goals, six points in three games played) and Evgeni Malkin (three goals, four points in six games played) have looked like their usual, healthy, dominant selves. On the defensive side of the puck, Jeff Petry's mobility and penchant for putting the puck on the net have been evident through three contests. How well can this defensive unit perform, assuming everyone on the blue line stays relatively healthy? Robbie and Garrett close out this week's show with a fun discussion about the return of the “Robo Penguin,” with the announcement of the new Reverse Retro jerseys across the NHL. Happy Wednesday! The Penguins were back practicing and as always, there is lots to discuss. Hunter dives into a couple of expected roster cuts that were made on Wednesday before going into a couple of other player performances from Tuesday night. He first touches on Jeff Petry and why it wasn't the best debut for him. He looks at his struggles in the defensive zone, plus his $5K fine that he got from the NHL on Wednesday morning. Was it a play that he actually should've been fined for? After that, he goes a bit more positive with Radim Zohorna and why it feels like it's now or never for him at this point. The second segment then dives into some of the practice lines and how the Penguins are starting to split up the main roster from the WBS roster. Hunter looks at Josh Archibald and if it's right for him to clearly have a place in that group, even though some younger players have looked a bit better at camp (same with Zohorna in a way). He advocates for Drew O'Connor and Drake Caggiula to join that group since he likes their upside heading into the season. Finally, he breaks down the rest of the lines and how it's clear that Ty Smith is starting to become the favorite to win that No. 6 defenseman job. Happy Tuesday! Hunter is back with a new episode of Locked On Penguins and he starts the show by looking at where the Penguins ranked in "average contract value added per team," from Evolving Wild. He explains how it works and what they're evaluating before giving his kudos to Ron Hextall for getting a lot of great things done (No, this doesn't factor in trades and whatnot). He reminds everyone that there could be more to come, even with training camp just a month away. The Penguins still have 9 NHL defensemen, after all. After that, Hunter looks at the NHL Network's top 20 centers and why they mostly got it right regarding Sidney Crosby & Evgeni Malkin. He touches on who he'd move those two players over in their respective spots (not many) before ending the show with a thought about Jeff Petry. He explains why he's a lot more confident in Petry's ability to handle top pairing minutes if something happened to Kris Letang this season where he's out for a few games. President of hockey operations for the Pittsburgh Penguins and friend of the podcast, Brian Burke takes some time out of his summer to talk with Bob and John. On todays show, the three discuss the Penguins off-season and the moves they have made so far. Bob and John pick Brian's brain about the salary cap and how to stay under it. We discuss the idea of teams "trading cap space" and how the hard cap influences trades and free agent signings, and Brian shares his opinion on handing out incentives during contract negotiations. We also get into the deal that brought Jeff Petry to Pittsburgh as Brian talks about the process it took to get him before moving on to his philosophy when it comes to building a team, his relationship with the Pens current GM Ron Hextall and the nuances of working with a former player in the front office. Before we go we talk to Brian about the shelf-life of NHL coaches and his time in Calgary, getting his opinion on the growing discourse aboutAmerican players not wanting to play for a Canadian organization.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

After the interview, Mike and Scott dove into what's been happening around the NHL and what hasn't been happening. The New York Islanders have done nothing so far this summer. Mike gives a prediction on what could still happen on Long Island. On the flip side, they spoke about the sneaky good summer the Pittsburgh Penguins have had. He goes into how Petry is still an outstanding player and how he did this past season on a terrible Montreal team. He looks at how he's an upgrade over both Matheson and Marino on the second pairing, plus who this will help the most on the Penguins. After that, he gives a small scoop on Petry's original offer (likely around the time of the NHL Draft) and how the Penguins HAD TO include Matheson in the deal. Following that, he goes into the Ty Smith for John Marino deal and looks at what kind of player that the Penguins are getting in Smith. Is he someone who loves the puck on his stick? How can his defensive game improve next season? Is he the next defenseman for Todd Reirden to do serious work with? After a long wait, the Montreal Canadiens have finally found a partner for a Jeff Petry trade, shipping the defenceman, and forward Ryan Poehling to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Mike Matheson and a draft pick. At first glance it feels like a loss for the Canadiens as their top right side defender is shipped out of town, leaving just David Savard in that role. However, as the hosts take a look at his microstats and development trend, did Kent Hughes pull off a sneaky good bit of work? At the very least, the Canadiens freed up more cap room, which allowed them to make more moves over the weekend as well. Namely, Montreal has re-signed Rem Pitlick to a two-year contract! After electing to not qualify the forward, thus avoiding arbitration, the Canadiens were able to bring him back on a very cheap $1.1million AAV contract for the next two years. Where does Pitlick slot into the lineup, and does his return slow the full-time NHL debuts of Jesse Ylönen and Rafaël Harvey-Pinard? The Habs weren't the only busy team though, as the Laval Rocket made a slew of moves to get themselves ready for next season. Scott takes a look at the return of Gabriel Bourque to the Rocket, in addition to the new prospects joining the goaltending posse.
