Los genes son, en cierta manera, una forma de escritura. No son textos que "alguien" le escriba a "otro alguien", pero sí contienen unas valiosas instrucciones que las células leen continuamente, que reparan cuando se dañan y que copian para pasarlas a sus descendientes. Antes de que existieran los humanos, mucho antes de que nadie pensara en dejarle una nota al vecino, ya se usaba un soporte físico para guardar información: el soporte es el ADN, y la información, los genes. Pero para poder leer el ADN hace falta un diccionario: algo que nos diga cuáles son las palabras y qué es lo que significan. Ese diccionario existe, y es el mismo para todos los seres vivos de nuestro planeta. Lo llamamos "código genético", y permite leer las cadenas de ADN como secuencias de aminoácidos. Es, seguramente, el diccionario más antiguo que conocemos: uno que traduce los genes a proteínas. En el episodio de hoy os hablamos de este diccionario, y lo hacemos a cuenta de una investigación recién publicada en la revista Science: mediante ingeniería genética se ha creado una bacteria que no usa todas las "palabras" del diccionario. Siete entradas del código genético han quedado libres en esta "bacteria artificial", y esto abre la puerta a estudiar la vida no como es, sino como podría ser. Hoy conversamos con Joaquín Querol, físico, ingeniero y fundador de Endor Technologies, una empresa biotecnológica de Barcelona que ha logrado algo excepcional: financiar investigación médica independiente a través de la cosmética. Desde su creación en 2007, Endor ha mantenido una misión poco común en el ecosistema científico y empresarial actual: sostener su investigación sin depender de inversores externos, combinando rigor científico, autonomía económica y visión a largo plazo. Querol relata cómo, a partir de una base en nanotecnología y una trayectoria personal marcada por la curiosidad interdisciplinar, logró construir una empresa que une tres líneas de trabajo: una línea cosmética de alta tecnología, una investigación para aliviar la mucositis en pacientes oncológicos y un ambicioso programa para ensayar una teoría innovadora sobre el crecimiento tumoral. Esta última parte del proyecto busca demostrar que el cáncer puede abordarse desde una perspectiva distinta, no destruyendo células tumorales sino “asediando” el tumor para impedir su expansión. La conversación recorre también los años más difíciles de Endor Technologies: más de una década de incertidumbre, préstamos y riesgo financiero antes de alcanzar la estabilidad. El punto de inflexión llegó en 2020, cuando un cambio en su estrategia digital, provocado por un simple anuncio en Facebook, transformó el rumbo de la empresa. Ese momento marcó el inicio de una etapa de crecimiento sostenido que permitió retomar la investigación en oncología con fondos propios y sin comprometer su independencia científica. A lo largo del episodio, Joaquín reflexiona sobre el equilibrio entre ciencia y negocio, la importancia de la perseverancia y la necesidad de pensar en horizontes de décadas, no de trimestres. El Cádiz CF está a punto de saltar a un escenario inédito para el fútbol español: Wall Street. A través de su filial Nomadar, el club gaditano prepara su salida al Nasdaq el próximo 31 de octubre, en una operación que lo situará entre las entidades deportivas más innovadoras del país. Nomadar lidera el ambicioso proyecto Sportech City Cádiz, un complejo multifuncional de más de 110.000 metros cuadrados en la Bahía que busca combinar deporte, tecnología y entretenimiento. El plan incluye un estadio para eventos de 40.000 personas, hotel, centro de convenciones, clínica deportiva, zonas gastronómicas y un hub tecnológico con data center. Una apuesta que pretende situar a la provincia en el mapa internacional de la economía del deporte. En 1972, los superiores del ICI decidieron cancelar la investigación. ‍ Pero Dora Richardson, la química que originalmente había sintetizado el compuesto, y su jefe, Arthur Walpole, estaban convencidos de que estaban en algo importante, algo que podría salvar vidas. Continuaron la investigación en secreto. El tamoxifeno se lanzó finalmente en 1973 y se convirtió en un éxito mundial, salvando cientos de miles de vidas.
