Here's our too-early San Jose Sharks' off-season plan!***Quick aside, Keegan's microphone is muffled a bit this episode. We're sorry, everyone! One day, we'll have pristine audio every single time. But not this day. This is kind of like those workplace accident signs where they knock off 100 days since the last accident and replace it with zero. Again. Sigh.***This week, Sheng and Keegan outline some potential off-season moves that could help make the 2024-2025 version of the Sharks be less embarrassing than this year's. (53:45)But before all that, we have a few quick-hitting topics this week (1:15). We start with Will Smith watch: Is he signing or not? (2:30)Sheng and Keegan preview the upcoming May 7th Draft Lottery odds and each run a simulation at Tankathon. Do the Sharks win? (6:10)We highlight what Sheng has heard about some potential candidates for Sharks head coach. (13:15)John McCarthy and the rest of the San Jose Barracuda coaching staff will be returning next season, despite some poor on-ice results. Why do Sheng and Keegan support their return? (29:30)The Sharks want goaltending coach Thomas Speer back, even after David Quinn was let go. (37:21)Finally, we revisit our pre-season bold predictions...how did Sheng and Keegan do? (42:20)Finally, our off-season plan! Which of their free agents should the Sharks keep or let go? Who should they target in the free agency market? Can they make a good trade? (53:45)How much cap and roster space could the San Jose Sharks have? (54:45)Which of the Sharks' UFAs and RFAs will they keep? Who should they allow to walk? (57:45)What's the order of positional need for San Jose this summer? (1:14:33)Let's talk to free agents first -- Sheng has a couple intriguing longshot UFA targets. (1:22:14)Keegan offers a longshot UFA signing at defense. (1:35:55)Then, Keegan shares his favorite lower-end UFA targets. (1:39:00)Sheng has a former Sharks defenseman in mind. (1:41:30)Finally, Keegan offers some forward UFAs with some upside. (1:46:10)That's free agency, how can the San Jose Sharks improve via trade? (1:58:24)Keegan proposes a Mikael Granlund trade. (1:58:44)Going back, Sheng discusses why the Mikey Eyssimont trade was such a mistake, and how the thinking behind the deal helped pave the way for a disastrous 2023-24. (2:03:30)What should Grier's trade philosophy be this summer? (2:16:25)Sheng is prioritizing distressed assets – who are a couple defenseman that the Sharks could target via trade? (2:17:55)How about a trio of center candidates? (2:20:51)Are the San Jose Sharks a better team with a couple of these realistic additions? (2:32:05) ★ Support this podcast ★

Canes fall apart as Colorado scores 4 straight goals to close out the 2nd period and fall 6-4 in Denver.  Carolina held a 3-2 lead after Brent Burns and Michael Bunting scored a minute and a half apart in the 2nd period.  But, with about 7 1/2 minutes left in the frame Frederik Olafsson tied the game and the Avs would score three more times to take a 3-goal lead into the 3rd.  Stefan Noesen and Jesperi Kotkaniemi each had a goal and an assist in the loss.  Carolina has a couple of days off before heading to Tampa to meet the Lightning on Tuesday.

At 12:51 of overtime, Jesper Fast's deflection of a Jesperi Kotkaniemi shot slipped through New Jersey goaltender Akira Schmid sending the Carolina Hurricanes to the Eastern Conference Finals.  It will be the second trip to the NHL's final four in the five years Rod Brind'Amour has been behind the bench.  The goal was Fast's 5th of the playoffs after scoring 10 in 80 games this season.  It was also his second overtime goal in the postseason having ended Game 2 in the opening round series with the Islanders.  Jaccob Slavin and Brent Burns each scored as well for Carolina.  Slavin's goal came in the 1st minute of the second period, while Burns' came in the last minute of the middle frame.  Burns' 2nd of the playoffs and second in as many games, tied the score at 2.  Frederik Andersen made 27 saves for his 5th playoff win and raised his save percentage to .931 in 6 games.  Carolina awaits the winner of the series between the Panthers and Maple Leafs with Florida holding a 3-1 lead heading to Friday's Game 5 in Toronto.

Jesperi Kotkaniemi scored two goals -- a gorgeous, wrap-around marker in the 2nd period and then a 120 foot, empty netter with 4 seconds left -- as the Hurricanes beat the Winnipeg Jets, 5-3 at PNC Arena.  Carolina was in dire need of a win.  They'd lost two straight, saw their division lead evaporate after consecutive shutout losses.  AND, they were playing for the first time since learning that Andrei Svechnikov was done for the year with an ACL tear.  They needed a win in the worst way.  Jaccob Slavin and Brady Skjei got the offense going first, then Kotkaniemi and Jack Drury handled the rest.  Drury's goal was his first of the year and came a day after being recalled from the minors.  Expect him to geet regular playing time the rest of the way.  Canes are off until Friday when they play in Toronto.  That is the first of a 3-game road trip that will take them to Philadelphia and then Madison Square Garden to meet the Rangers.

Jesper Fast's late 3rd period goal brought Carolina even and allowed Jesperi Kotkaniemi's shootout winner to give the Canes a 4-3 win over the Canadiens. The win gives Carolina a 4-point lead over New Jersey -- with a game in hand -- after the Devils lost at home to Toronto. Jaccob Slavin and Brady Skjei each scored for Carolina, who spent the majority of the first two periods making a mess with the puck. Turnovers led to all three Montreal goals as the Habs took a 3-2 lead into the 3rd. But, Jesper Fast forced a turnover that led to his rebound goal and, ultimately, to the Canes' 20th road win of the season. Carolina is off until taking on the Flyers at PNC Arena on Thursday

Teuvo Teravainen's second career hat trick was one of many highlights in the Canes' 6-0 pasting of the Lightning. Jesperi Kotkaniemi had the first 5-point game of his NHL career, notching a goal and four assists, Martin Necas had three helpers, and the Hurricanes went 4 for 5 on the power play in winning their second straight game. Carolina is now 7 for 9 with the man advantage the last two nights with the addition of defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere, who tallied a power play goal for the second straight night and tossed in a couple of assists as well. Freddie Andersen didn't have to do much, but a shut out is a shut out -- his first of the year, and Carolina's 7th as a team. The Canes lead the Metro by 2 points over the Devils with a game in hand.

Artemi Panarin scored 4 goals, 3 in a decisive third period as the Rangers beat the Hurricanes 6-2 at PNC Arena. The loss ended Carolina's 7 game winning streak and trimmed their lead over the Devils to 3 points in the Metropolitan Division. The Canes led 2-1 on goals from Teuvo Teravainen and Jesperi Kotkaniemi until Panarin's 1st goal, with just over 2:00 remained in the 2nd period. From that point on, the Hurricanes sort of fell apart. Panarin's 2nd of the night was the product of a Vincent Trocheck steal and proved to be the game winner. The Carolina Hurricanes beat the Florida Panthers, 4-0, at PNC Arena Friday night extending their winning streak to 10 games. That's the longest in franchise history. It also extends their stretch of getting at least one point to 16 consecutive games, which was already a franchise best. Carolina used special teams to dispatch the Panthers. The Canes scored three times on the power play and turned aside all six of Florida's man-advantage situations. It was the first time all year the Hurricanes rang up three power play goals in a game and the fourth goal came just seconds after another power play expired. Stefan Noesen, Andrei Svechnikov, Teuvo Teravainen and Jesperi Kotkaniemi scored goals, while Brent Burns and Seth Jarvis each had two assists. The Hurricanes will next play on Sunday -- New Years Day -- in New Jersey in a game that starts at 3:00.
