Stargazing: A Big D Puckcast | Defending Big D

Are the Dallas Stars poised for greatness or on the precipice of disaster? Because the Victory Green Gang is Schrödinger's Team, the correct answer is always “Both, and at the same time.” But this week, Wes, Mark and Tyler are focusing on happy thoughts and good things. Mostly. In this episode: On a scale of Shea Weber to Dustin Penner, how likely is it that the still-unsigned Jake Oettinger gets an offer sheet? On a scale of Andrei Vasilevskiy to Jordan Binnington, where does our potential cornerstone (and current adorable sea creature) really tip the scale? What would it take for the Stars to even contemplate allowing Jason Robertson to leave the fold? What would it take for Robertson to even consider signing an offer sheet? Does a team even exist who can offer it? To expand on that thought, has the NHL's flat cap destroyed the offseason? And will schadenfreude help? We wouldn't be surprised if this continues all the way into training camp. Welcome to Stargazing. You have questions. We have answers, sort of. Leave your queries at Defending Big D, or DM us @WesALawrence or @KETibbetts. You could be part of the next podcast. And we love it when you rate, review and share, especially during the offseason. They also look at where both these teams go from here and why they will both be in a great spot again next season. After that, they switch to a massive amount of NHL News. Maybe the biggest of the batch being the Kevin Fiala trade and signing that came yesterday. Fiala's new deal sparked some interest and a good discussion of value when it comes to the trade. They also look at Shea Weber and his contract being moved and what that means. Finally, the guys look at four new NHL Head Coaching jobs and try and make sense of it all. Inside today's Locked on Canadiens: After discussing the departure of Shea Weber in a trade with the Vegas Golden Knights, Scott and Laura take a look at the newest arrival to Montreal in the form of Evgenii Dadonov. A consistent 20 goal winger with good underlying numbers seems to be what the doctor order for Martin St. Louis and the Habs, but where will he play in the lineup? Also, with just one year left on his deal, how attractive does Dadonov become as a trade piece for the Canadiens heading into another season where they're expected to be less than spectacular? Then, due to an overwhelming amount of questions, the mailbag was extended into Monday's show! The hosts tackle where the prospect pipeline on defence is headed, and if a player like Mattias Norlinder could be traded in the near future. Also, which player out of Jordan Harris and Kaiden Guhle is likely to start the year in the NHL, and which will start as the Laval Rocket's top defender? Can Arber Xhekaj continue to surprise, or is his first stop in the organization in the ECHL? Finally, which members of the Habs would star in an all Montreal version of Lord of the Rings? The NHL provided some insight into the salary projections over the next few seasons and other topics. Mike DiStefano and David Morassutti give a shoutout to the Golden State Warriors and Canadian Andrew Wiggins winning the NBA title (2:00). The league is deciding to keep the rules regarding long-term injured reserve and not longer after the Shea Weber trade goes down (9:15). Mike and Dave discuss the issues they have with the current LTIR system.  The NHL saw an increase in hockey-related revenue but won't see an increase in the salary cap for another few years. Mike and Dave give their thoughts on why this should be viewed as a positive given what has happened the past few years (14:54). There appears to be a desire to have the World Cup of Hockey on a more regular basis. The guys discuss the return of the tournament and why the potential time of year they want to hold the tournament is an interesting idea (19:15).  To end the show, Mike and Dave go through the results of the Leafs fan survey to see if their answers match up (25:23). They discuss the fans' belief in the management team and if they would make changes if the Leafs don't win a playoff round next season (30: 40). It looks like many want Jack Campbell back but what are the terms of the contract that they want and what should the Leafs do with Petr Mrazek? Mike and Dave discuss those results (37:58).  Make sure you watch for the final clue in the Leafs jersey giveaway which we will do at some point next week. Learn more about your ad choices. Inside today's Locked on Canadiens: Scott and Laura peak back into the insanity of the NHL playoffs and offer up some takes on the ongoing series. The Battle of Alberta is tied up heading into Game 3, Mike Smith managed to redeem himself, but Scott still doesn't know if he can keep it up in a seven game series. Nazem Kadri had a water bottle thrown at him by Jordan Binnington after Kadri had accidentally collided with the Blues goalie and knocked him out of the game. Was the Kadri hit intentional, or was it a pure accident and his history of discipline is clouding people's judgement? Arpon Basu of the Athletic wrote a detailed breakdown on Shane Wright, and both hosts agreeing that even with a potential lack of flash, Shane Wright appears to be a slam dunk fit for head coach Martin St. Louis. The hosts breakdown the article, and all the reasons why the team shouldn't galaxy brain this first overall pick, and just go with the Wright choice. Then, to flip gears in the final segment the hosts galaxy brain *EVERYTHING* about the upcoming Canadiens' off-season thanks to a listener suggestion. Can the team acquire Filip Forsberg, while also shedding a ton of a cap space to make the contract work? Can Kent Hughes sweeten Shea Weber's contract enough to get a huge return from the Arizona Coyotes? Scott and Laura give their thoughts on a wildly fun hypothetical question. Inside today's Locked on Canadiens: Montreal ended their season by dismantling the Florida Panthers 10-2 in front of a packed Bell Centre, sending fans home happy after a nightmarish season. Cole Caufield tallied his first NHL hat trick while Jordan Harris scored his first professional goal in the rout. Scott and Laura discuss how special it felt to hear the crowd chant for Guy Lafleur after scoring ten goals, and how important it was to end the season on a strong note after a slog of a season. The team still finished in last place, but that doesn't mean they didn't set some foundation for the next steps in Kent Hughes' rebuilding plan. Saturday was locker cleanout day for the Habs as well, with a number of players speaking to the media about their futures and the season at large. The hosts look at the quotes about Shea Weber's immediate future, and how it feels like the end of an era in Montreal with a new captain being named for next season. They also discuss Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield's comments and how impressive they both are as young professional in an intense hockey market like Montreal. Jeff Petry had a chance to clear the air a bit about his future with the Canadiens, and whether he'll be back next season or not. While Kent Hughes has said he'll do right by the player and the team, it seems like Petry found his groove again with Martin St-Louis at the helm. Scott and Laura also dig into Petry's thoughts about what went wrong with Dominique Ducharme, and how he tried to speak up for the locker room when things got bad. Carey Price is going to be the centre of attention all summer for Habs fans and media alike, as both Price and Kent Hughes confirmed that he's not 100% and another surgery may be on the table. Price himself noted that his knee cannot hold up like it used to and that he isn't sure what his future looks like either, stating that he can't handle the workload like he used to. So the big question now becomes, did Carey Price just play his last game for the Montreal Canadiens against Florida? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Inside today's Locked on Canadiens: The Montreal Canadiens had a tough task ahead of them on Tuesday night as the Minnesota Wild rolled into the Bell Centre. The game was another frustrating one as the Habs offence never found any legs to support a strong start from Carey Price in net. Losing 2-0 isn't the worst thing against a strong Minnesota team, but it leaves a slightly bitter taste as both hosts want to see a bit more fight down the stretch. Scott also has a lot of words for the Wild calling timeout for a power play with the game already well in hand, and then failing to score on said power play as well. One of the hottest topics around the Montreal Canadiens is how the team can get under the cap next season, and that the easy way out is to continue leaving Shea Weber on LTIR. However, there is a bit of miscommunication surrounding it, as the Canadiens cannot LTIR cap relief just by simply putting a player there. Scott and Laura break down the steps the team can take to either move his contract or utilize it in a way to gain LTIR relief. The hosts also discuss the sudden reappearance of narratives about Carey Price and which languages he chooses to speak to the media. For a player who has spent 17 years in the Canadiens organization this attack on the character of a franchise icon is a disgrace, and Scott quite frankly has had enough. The hosts discuss why the attack against Price and any other Canadiens player is uncalled for, and why at the end of the day, it doesn't matter what language they speak.
