Today’s episode gives rare insight into the economics and emotional journey associated with becoming a professional musician in Seattle. With money and people moving into the city, this episode focuses on some of the musicians the city stands to lose as the economics of a recording artist change. You will hear the voice of a musician who has moved away from the city, two musicians who anticipate moving soon, and a musician whose successful band has gone on hiatus. The episode gives further perspective on the soul of Seattle’s music scene and how the community is evolving as the city transforms. In this episode are: Naomi Wachira, who was once named Seattle’s best folk singer by Seattle Weekly. Matt Bishop, who explains why his popular band Hey Marseilles recently went on hiatus. Kate Voss who was named Best Jazz Act of 2017 by Seattle Weekly and NW Jazz Vocalist of the Year by Earshot. Jason Goessl who performs in several bands including Sundae and Mr. Goessl with his wife Kate Voss. The episode also features the songs Makes My Heart Sway by Sundae and Mr. Goessl and Beautifully Human by Naomi Wachira. In this episode, you will learn how these artists attracted their followings, how they made a living, and how the booming economy affects the paychecks of local performing artists.

When SMI Radio launched in April of 2010 our very first musical guest was Joe Simpson AKA Eldridge Gravy from Eldridge Gravy and The Court Supreme. The band released their most recent record, Gravy’s In Your Area which was released last month. I catch up with Joe to talk about the band’s new disc, some of the personal changes in the group and we spin some selected tracks from the new release. In the second half of the show I welcome back Artist Home's Kevin Sur. Kevin and his crew are responsible for staging some incredible Northwest music festivals. Last year Artist Home launched the very first annual Timber! Outdoor Music Festival. It was so successful that he is bringing it back an expanded version taking place this summer. You don't have to wait for the summer sun to enjoy some great music in a festival setting. Artist Home will present the very first Timberrr! Winter Music Festival which will take place later this month (1/10 - 1/11) in beautiful Leavenworth, Washington. Kevin and I chat this unique music event and the participating artists such as Hey Marseilles, Telekenisis, The Moondoggies, Radiation City and a lot more. (For the complete lineup go here.) We also share some music from Timberrr! artists as well.

TOMMY MALONE has enjoyed a successful career as the guitarist, singer for the leg-endary SUBDUDES for over two decades. A musicians musician, he has recorded with Rosanne Cash, Shawn Colvin and Anders Osborne, and has impacted markets with hit other projects including Tiny Town and the Continental Drifters. His songs have been recorded by Joe Cocker, The Radiators, Tab Benoit and many others, but its his ability to perform his own stories and turn them into vivid musical images that sets him apart from other performers. His first solo record in 12 years 'Natural Born Days' tracks one mans journey through life, suffering through hard times from hurricanes to heartbreak but al-ways finding a way to keep on keeping on. HEY MARSEILLES [pronounced: hay mar-say ] is the critically acclaimed orchestral pop sextet from Seattle. The band produces a lush wall of orchestral sound using cello, viola, trumpet, accordion, clarinets, piano, guitar and drums around Matt Bishop's memorable melodies and honest lyricism. Their unique orchestral chamber pop (or 'folkestra' as the band likes to say) has become the groups signature sound. The band has just released their sophomore album 'Lines We Trace'. It represents a band steady enough in its sound, that it can expand beyond it.
