“Be a homie & let us know what you think”What happens when spiritual philosophy meets beatmaking? Kershawn Tha Don answers this question through her soulful productions and community-building efforts, guided by her core belief that "love is the highest vibration."The Long Beach-based producer takes us through her musical evolution, from singing in a Baptist church choir to performing with Beat Cinema on Coachella's prestigious Gobi Stage in 2023. "Music is so important in those spaces because it sets up the atmosphere... to open up your spirit to receive," she reflects, revealing how her spiritual foundation influences her creative approach.Kershawn's journey into beatmaking began in 2008, experimenting with Fruity Loops during night shifts as a CNA after being inspired by 9th Wonder's production on Little Brother's "The Listening." Her artistic progression unfolds through albums like "Union Electric" (2020), which she describes with charming candor as her "cringe album" made without overthinking, and "Butter" (2023), crafted primarily using the Koala app and SP-555.Beyond her own productions, Kershawn has created vital space for women in music through "Ladies Love Loops," a live music series showcasing female producers, singers, MCs, and DJs. "I did it to expose everybody to each other for collaboration," she explains, highlighting how building community remains central to her mission. The conversation takes an exciting turn when Naj Ahead joins to discuss their forthcoming collaborative album "He's My Muse," dropping in October 2025. This project promises a modern take on neo-soul with Erykah Badu-inspired vibes, complete with limited edition physical copies featuring a lyric booklet. "It's a love story and it goes from the beginning to the end," Kershawn shares, noting it's designed for "nostalgic old souls."Whether you're a beatmaker, a fan of underground hip-hop, or someone who believes in music's power to build community, this episode offers rare insight into creating authentically while lifting others up. Norwegian hornist Frøydis Wekre has had a remarkable and influential career as both performer and teacher. She joined the Oslo Philharmonic at the age of 20, at a time when there were only two women in the orchestra, and went on to establish herself as a highly respected chamber musician, soloist, and educator. For many years, she served as a professor at the Norwegian Academy of Music, and her reach has extended far beyond Norway through the countless masterclasses she's given around the world. Widely regarded as one of the leading brass pedagogues of her generation, Frøydis has inspired students and professionals alike with her wisdom, insight, and artistry. In Part 1 of our conversation, we begin by discussing a metaphor from her book Collected Writings, in which she compares two types of teachers to a family doctor and a specialist—one who works with a student long-term, and another who is brought in to address a specific need. It's a concept that resonates deeply in the teaching world, and Frøydis shares how it has shaped her own approach to working with students. We also talk about her experience playing natural horn and explore the different national and cultural styles of horn playing that she has encountered throughout her career. The first part concludes with reflections on her studies with several legendary figures in the brass world: Vitali Bujanovsky, Wilhelm Lanzky-Otto, and James Stamp.[Subscriber Content] In Part 2, Froydis shares her perspective on international competitions, including thoughts on fairness and how such events might be improved. This leads into a broader conversation about women in music and how the landscape has changed—and in some ways, still needs to change—over the course of her career. We wrap up with a few light, miscellaneous questions, giving Frøydis the chance to reflect on her life and work with both humor and depth. It was a privilege to speak with someone who has not only shaped the horn world but continues to influence generations of musicians through her teaching, writing, and example.DoricoProfessional music notation and composition software from Steinberg. Which means that she has also been reflecting on how misogyny plays into the songs she has written and how widespread everyday misogyny is reflected throughout Taylor's career. Elizabeth Kyle is the perfect Swiftie to help guide Natalie through this conversation. The two women discuss the social dynamics that goes into being a Swiftie, the focus on the men she has had relationships with, and how she has been treated as a professional in the music industry. Between the two of them, they go straight from a Lover to their Midnights Era, and talk about how being aware of how internalized misogyny and widespread cultural misogyny affects people on a larger scale. Topics that are confronted are the way we view success among women creators, to the way we talk about women who have had bad relationships, and how we talk about other women's bodies and our own bodies. By making music that brings her a feeling ofhappiness, it never feels like a task to her. Whether she's in Atlanta or Los Angeles, the musicshe creates is going to be done her way and fit her standards. Much of her music is centeredaround the topic of love and she approaches it from a standpoint of lightheartedness andfreedom but - the intentionality is still constant. Her lyrics flow from her mind to the mic in astream-of-consciousness approach that makes every song honest and authentic.“Some songs are just easy to write and it doesn't take long. I'm just always focused ondelivering whatever feeling that I feel like goes with the music or the lyrics that are in the song.”she said.Whether she's crooning about love in an R&B track, bringing people to the dance floor ordropping bars, Melody's music is a surprise practically every time. Her latest single, “Exposed”feels right at home in the R&B lane but there's something special about it that Melody wants herlisteners to experience.“It has a nostalgic 90s classic vibe to me. It's a new song but it feels like it's been here before. Iwant people to feel that nostalgic warmth when they hear it and get all in their feels.” she said.“Exposed” is the latest single from her upcoming project Damsel That Collects whose name flipsthe outdated expression “damsel in distress.” The title expresses the power of Melody's place inthe world as a woman doing things her way and not apologizing to anyone for it. This theme isthe connecting through line across the whole project with each song being an expression of thisperspective which Melody lives by.“I'm still a damsel but I'm not in distress. I'm collecting my resources, I'm collecting a bag andI'm using my femininity to do it. I don't feel like I have to fit into any of the roles like a wife ormother that society tries to label women with. I'm in a good space right now and I feel like thereare multiple other women in this space too. They're damsels but they're not in distress. They'reliving their dreams and living their lives their way.” she said.Melody keeps her fun, freedom based approach to music present in all aspects. “Exposed” wasactually created while she was in the studio working on other music and with the idea comingfrom her producer Ozzy, the song just came together naturally in a spur of the moment way. ForMelody, this type of collaboration is a regular occurrence and combining ideas is one of herfavorite aspects of creating music. This mindset is sure to propel her further and further in themusic industry and she brings in more people to bring her vision to life whether it be in thestudio, shooting music videos or any creative endeavour she pursues.“I look at it like a cocktail. I represent one ingredient and they represent others. They can bringsomething new out of me by sharing their ideas. I'm able to expand myself by working with otherpeople and getting other people's points of view to create something fresh. By combining mytalents, dreams and ideas with others, those people can also live their dreams and bring theirtalents together with mine. Collaboration allows me to be the catalyst for all of that.” she said.As an artist with multiple plans and paths, Melody also stars in season two of OWN's realityseries, The Never Ever Mets which premiered April 4th, 2025. So when a girl called up June and her sister and asked if they wanted to start a band, the answer was hell yeah. They went on to become Fanny, the first all-female rock band to release an album with a major record label. June and her bandmates moved into a house in LA, toured the world and won fans like David Bowie.
