Hey hey BATT Family! Thanks for coming on back for the next full episode of the show! If you've joined in after our recent interview with Jamey Stegmaier, thanks for coming back around! This week we got to have a dear friend of the show on to discuss the effects of colour vision issues in board gaming and the ways that games try and handle that - successfully and otherwise. We should note that it is a conversation with only one person with those colour vision issues, so his experience is replicable to his singular experience. But hopefully it helps provoke some thought and lets you hear some other opinions you may not have had the ability to yet! This episode we're also talking some games provided to us from Hobby World and Bellows Intent as well as finally getting Scott to play Ethnos and how that treated him. Like normal, hit us up with any thoughts or comments you may have! --- This episode's segments: 00:00:00 - Intro 00:00:55 - What's Been on the Table 00:06:06 - Topic of the Week: Colour Vision Issues in Board Gaming 00:31:08 - Why Did I Play That: Ethnos 00:40:15 - Table / Shelf / Trade 00:54:22 - Rotating Segment: The Archives 00:58:45 - Contact Info / Sponsors 01:00:07 - Outro --- Notes! 1) We should mention that this episode was recorded prior to the tariff stuff all dropping, which is why it wasn't mentioned in this episode. We're certainly not going to keep hammering on that topic as there isn't much we can directly do about it, but if you're wondering how we go from the interview we did to this episode, that would be why. 2) You can also hear just how long it's been since we recorded this since Scott was talking PopiCon at one point. Just general reshuffling of stuff between all the various issues of the past couple months. 3) Scott was right! There was a third bigger expansion to Tiny Towns. Fortune, Villagers, and Architects (which released in 2024!). 4) So it turns out that Scott's Archive game of Get Bit, we talked about in episode 19! Because I guess, let's just rip the curtain right away for this set of episode notes: The episode you heard as E19 was originally intended as E21 and this was to be E19. We figured since we had *just* had MacWagCon the previous weekend, we'd talk about it and release it while it was all fresh in our minds. So we recorded this PRIOR to MacWagCon where we summarily played Get Bit. But because it was better explained here, I decided to leave it in. 5) And we did play Bob Ross: the Art of Chill (actually after we finished recording!). Scott enjoyed it, but I'll let him provide his commentary on it at a later date. 6) Also, my dog coughed an enormous amount through this episode. I decided to not stick you with that very odd, repetitive noise but that last tag made me laugh regardless. 7) And for those of you that have asked, my younger son is thankfully fine. The hospital stay went fine and he's back home and bouncing around like normal at this point. Sorry for the delay on the episode, we appreciate the patience. --- You can email us at boardallthetimegaming@gmail.com. Co-hosts Abby Newsham and Chuck Marohn discuss the challenges faced by Victoria, Prince Edward Island, a town in Canada that only has 139 full-time residents. In an attempt to attract new residents, the town has adopted its first five-year development plan. Chuck and Abby talk about how very small towns like Victoria show the absurdities of the Suburban Experiment best — and feel its consequences most keenly. They explore what the future could look like for communities like this and emphasize the importance of embracing the things that make a specific town special instead of trying to copy suburban subdivisions. AP Table Talk: FollowIn this episode of AP Table Talk, Brian and Dave Eng discuss the concept of the follow mechanic in board games. They begin by relating the concept to platformer games and how follow mechanics let players perform or adjust actions chosen by others. They review games like Tiny Towns and Puerto Rico, recalling their experiences with these games. They also cover Tiny Epic Galaxies and Glass Road, highlighting how follow mechanics affect gameplay and strategy. They both debate the balance and fairness of follow mechanics, examining their impact on game length and player experience, and consider whether making them mandatory or optional is more effective. If you liked this episode please consider commenting, sharing, and subscribing.Subscribing is absolutely free and ensures that you'll get the next episode delivered directly to you. Deep in the snowy mountains is a tiny town called Nimmitabel. It's almost smack bang in the middle of Sydney and Melbourne, it's got a school, a pub, a couple of churches – enough for a few hundred people. It's the sort of place you move to start a fresh chapter of life, to feel part of a community, where literally everyone knows your name and drops round a casserole or a jar of freshly made jam. And Nimmitable is all of those things, but it's also something else: a place where a man by the name of Andrew Thaler, a serial political candidate and serial pest, is bullying and threatening women. Today, Jordan Baker on the tiny town with the big problem, the man at the centre of it, and the women who've had enough.Subscribe to The Age & SMH: https://subscribe.smh.com.au/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today we are discussing The 79th Annual Watermelon Festival in Rush Springs, Oklahoma. Hosted each year since August 1948, the Rush Springs Watermelon Festival and Rodeo celebrates the local watermelon crop with activities, carnival rides and plenty of old-fashioned, family-friendly entertainment. This annual event has become one of the most popular festivals in Oklahoma, attracting over 30,000 visitors each year and serving upwards of 50,000 pounds of juicy, ripe melon to festival-goers. Experience the rodeo on Thursday and Friday before returning on Saturday to sample local acres of black diamond, royal sweet and other watermelon varieties. The festival will also feature all-day fun like a seed-spitting contest, an arts and crafts fair, carnival rides, and more. Rush Springs is a town of less than 1500 residents, however, each summer, it becomes THE place to be as 20,000 people assemble for the Rush Springs Watermelon Festival. The beloved annual tradition has been held in this welcoming town every second Saturday in August since 1948. To learn about the rich history of Rush Springs, stop by the Hampton House Museum on the main strip. When heading into town, keep your eyes peeled to spot the Dinosaur Roadside Ranch on US Highway 81. This attraction features junkyard metal artwork including two giant dinosaurs, an airplane with a tin can man pilot, an assortment of smiley face-themed pieces and more. One of the dinosaur pieces was built out of an old horse trailer and originally used as an animated parade float. It's a great pitstop to snap a photo! Picture this tiny Aussie town that's suddenly on everyone's radar because of something called the "Baltimore Phenomenon." Basically, it's this bizarre glitch where mapmakers kept copying a mistake from an old map, labeling this random spot as "Baltimore" instead of its actual name. And bam, just like that, this little town becomes a worldwide sensation, known not for its own charm but for this crazy mix-up. Locals probably get a kick out of it, seeing tourists show up scratching their heads, wondering where all the crab cakes are. With declining rates of civic engagement across cities around the world, Kiel, in Germany, is taking a unique approach to improving participation – by putting it on wheels! The Tiny Townhall is a world-first project that brings city government out of the stuffy buildings we're used to and back to the citizens. And, in a time when bigger is often better, this small solution is having an outsized impact, inside and outside city hall. Emeryville is a tiny town – less than 2 square miles. It's nestled between Oakland and Berkeley, right at the foot of the Bay Bridge, and most people probably think of it as a place to go shopping. Two major freeways cut through Eville and from your car, while you're inevitably sitting in traffic, you can see giant signs for Ikea, Target, and Bay Street mall. If you're not from the Bay Area, you might know it as the home of Pixar. This era of Emeryville as a mecca of cartoons and commerce is relatively new. A generation ago, the landscape looked drastically different. Media often described it as an “industrial wasteland” due to the toxic pollution left behind by factories that fled in the 1970s and 80s. It was also known as a place where corruption festered during the reign of an allegedly corrupt police chief who “ruled the town with an iron fist,” according to former city manager Joe Tanner. Flash forward to 2024 and Emeryville's brand new mayor Courtney Welch, the first Black woman to hold that position, can legitimately claim that the town is “having a bit of a renaissance.” Brand new parks, apartments, and shops now occupy land that was littered with junked cars, rusty warehouses, and crumbling buildings. Taking notice of this transformation, I wrote about some of my favorite things to do in Emeryville recently for SF Gate and the article got a huge response. So, since a lot of people seem to be checking out Emeryville for the first time, I though it would be a good opportunity to look back at Emeryville's history and ask some important questions… Like: How did it become such a hell hole in the 80s? How did it transform so radically since then? Why does this extremely unique tiny little town even exist? Spoiler alert: The answers to all these questions are pretty crazy. There's a good reason why former Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren famously called Emeryville “the rottenest city on the Pacific Coast.” Today's episode features interviews with Rob Arias, publisher of The Eville Eye community news site, and creator of the Emeryville Historical Society's new Park Avenue District walking tour; and also Joe Tanner, who served as Emeryville's city manager in the 1980s. https://eastbayyesterday.com/episodes/rotten-city-no-more/ Note: Note: To hear my previous episode about the history the “Emeryville shellmound” and battles over Ohlone sacred sites, click here: https://eastbayyesterday.com/episodes/where-are-those-ancestors-now/ This episode is sponsored by UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals. Art is everywhere! From the screen on your phone to the paintings in a museum. It's also all over the board games we know and love! It's also more than just something pretty to look at… but how far can art in board games take us? How much does it effect our enjoyment of the game? Can there be too much of it? Romana Didulo rose to prominence in 2020, gained a massive number of followers, moved her followers from online talk to in-person action, and has been traversing thew country in a notorious RV for the past year. All of this sounds absurd, but it's all tinged with the very real threat of violence.Today, Didulo and her followers have holed up in a tiny prairie town, that absolutely does not want them there. They are encamped at an abandoned school, refusing to leave and urging more to join them. Today's episode is about the pandemic's oddest phenomenon, how it led to Richmound, Sask. and what the small community is doing about it.GUEST: Peter Smith, investigative journalist and researcher with the Canadian Anti-Hate Network

It said: In this exciting episode of the Devil's Trap Podcast, hosts Liz and Diana delve into the fascinating world of spiritualism as inspired by the Supernatural episode set in Lily Dale, the Florida spiritualist church. They explore their deep-rooted connections to the intriguing concept of a place where people gather in the woods to converse with the departed. Presenting the first interview ever done on the History of the Evergreen State Podcast! President of the Purple Sage Riders of the Back Country Horsemen of Washington, Tawney Carrier, joins me on the show today to discuss the fascinating life of Herbert Hover and the tiny eastern Washington town he founded, Hover. Little more than a ghost town today with just a few foundations marking the spot now, Hover has become over the decades a popular dumping ground. Tawney and the Purple Sage Riders have conducted numerous cleanups over the years to make sure this special place doesn't get ruined. Please bear with me during this interview, as it is my first, and I hope to conduct more of these in the near future, and if any of you have been long time listeners to the podcast, then you will remember it took me a while to hit my stride.
