** PLEASE SUBSCRIBE ** Featured in WYGYFF Episode 25: Singer-songwriter, producer, guitarist and drummer LeRoy Bell. With his famous uncle and Philly Sound hitmaker Thom Bell as a mentor, during the 1970s he wrote or co-wrote songs for Elton John, the Spinners, the O'Jays, the Temptations, Freda Payne, the Three Degrees, Teddy Pendergrass, Phyllis Hyman, Lou Rawls, Johnny Mathis and others. For John, he co-wrote the hit, “Mama Can't Buy You Love.” He was also one-half of the duo Bell and James, which released three albums and notched the funky dance hit, “Livin' It Up (Friday Night).” Along the way he shared the stage with superstars like B.B. King and Joe Cocker, released solo albums and led a group called LeRoy Bell and His Only Friends, and in 2011 was a standout on TV's The X Factor talent show. RECORDED MARCH 2025 Hosted by Scott "DR GX" Goldfine — musicologist, author of “Everything Is on the One: The First Guide of Funk” and creator/host of the popular TRUTH IN RHYTHM podcast — "Where'd You Get Your Funk From?" is the latest interview show brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET. Where'd You Get Your Funk From (WYGYFF) is an open format video and audio podcast focusing on the here and now, with a broad range of creative and artistic guests sharing fascinating stories, experiences, and perspectives. WYGYFF is a welcoming avenue to newer and independent musical acts as well as established and still active musicians of any genre; authors; filmmakers; actors; artists; collectors and archivists; radio & podcast personalities; journalists; scholars; sound techs; promoters; photographers; and other creative people. A common thread, is the show's standard opening question: Where'd you get your funk from? This is much deeper than it may seem as the answer need not be strictly about funky music, as not everyone has found the funk. It could hit on whatever type of music touches their soul or pleasure centers. Additionally, the question extends beyond music. Paraphrasing George Clinton, funk is whatever it needs to be to get you over the hump. Thus, guests can explain where they got their grit, perseverance, inspiration, talent, creativity, character or other qualities that shaped them into who they are today. This serves as a springboard into candid, in-depth and engrossing conversations. LEGAL NOTICE: All video and audio content protected by copyright. 250722PC: Corona – war da was? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The Not Ready for Prime Time Podcast: The Early Years of SNL
Another VINTAGE episode of The Early Years of SNL this week as we take a look back at Eric Idle's first time hosting Saturday Night Live early in Season 2. With the help of musical guest Joe Cocker (and Stuff), the Monty Python legend's outing delivers one of the best shows of the original era.Top to bottom, this is a great episode. While it leans heavily on Idle and feels very reminiscent of all things Python, there are still plenty of classic SNL moments that stand out—including Baba Wawa, The Bees, and John Belushi doing his Joe Cocker impression alongside the real Joe Cocker during the musical performance. If that wasn't enough, this is also the episode that introduced us to "The Rutles."We were joined by our "English Correspondent," Thomas Sena, making his second appearance on the podcast to help break down this Python-meets-SNL masterpiece. This episode was originally released on October 17th, 2023.---------------------------------Subscribe today!Follow us on social media: X (Twitter): NR4PTProjectBluesky: nr4ptproject.bsky.socialInstagram: nr4ptprojectFacebook: The Not Ready for Prime Time ProjectContact Us: Website: https://www.nr4project.comEmail: nr4ptproject@gmail.com

Professor Dame Ijeoma Uchegbu is Professor of Pharmaceutical Nanoscience at University College London and President of Wolfson College, University of Cambridge. She has devoted her career to harnessing the potential of nanoparticles – which are less than a thousandth of the width of a human hair - to take medicines to hard-to-reach areas of the body such as the back of the eye and the brain. Using nanoparticles in this way is said to increase the efficacy of medicines and reduce side effects. Ijeoma was born in London where her parents had settled from Nigeria. At 13 she moved with her family to Nigeria where she developed an enduring love of chemistry. In 2010 she co-founded a pharmaceutical company Nanomerics with her husband. The company is currently developing eyedrops to treat blindness and a nasal spray to target pain which she hopes will go some way to addressing the opioid crisis. Our Album You Must Hear Before You Die this week is Raw Power (1973) by Iggy and the Stooges. The lo-fi production on this highly influential album is the source of much tension between Bowie and Iggy, much of it not fair. We liked it! Enjoy. Leland Sklar Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson Happy Happy Joy Joy, that's spending time conversing with our good friend, Leland Sklar, who's made it all about the bass with everybody on everything, from Phil Collins, James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne, Billy Cobham, Carole King, Hall & Oates, Crosby Stills, & Nash, Barbra Streisand, Joe Cocker, Toto, Lyle Lovett, and the list goes on and on, and on, and on… over 2500 + albums worth. I'm exhausted typing this. How the hell does he do it? An activist, Lee's stood up, spoken out, and paid the price innumerable times. A voice of clarity, passion, and reason, we got into it big time… the LA protests, the insanity surrounding them, the terrifying regime, our hope for Newsom, the unknowing of how to stop it, or how it will ultimately shake out… the fires, the transition back to living post the pandemic. Of course, we did talk music too. Respects to Brian Wilson and Sly Stone, Lee having played with the former, and influenced by the latter… how health has befallen so many heroes, Phil Collins, Linda Ronstadt, Billy Joel, Neil Diamond… and the wonder of Leland, currently doing 3 hr concerts with Lyle, still standing. That boy has good genes. Levis. The ongoing and upcoming big tour with Lyle and the sad putting aside, for now, of The Immediate Family. We talked about the lads, his brothers, Russ Kunkel, Danny Kortchmar, Waddy Wachtel, and Steve Postel, what makes that band so rockin' special, we talked about James Taylor, Peter Asher, who Lee holds responsible for launching his career, Phil Collins, and his amazingly talented son, Nick, Toto, Stevie Nicks, his book, Everybody Loves Me, which I'm blessed to be in, and Lee's marriage that has endured for 54 years and counting. Lee's one of the most universally adored musicians for his playing, his humanity, his humor, and his great big heart. I adore him. Who doesn't? Well, maybe a couple of fools on Capitol Hill. The man's a marvel. We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2017 conversation with Jimmy Webb. ABOUT JIMMY WEBBJimmy Webb emerged as a superstar songwriter and arranger in 1967 when two of his songs – The 5th Dimension's “Up, Up and Away” and Glen Campbell's “By the Time I Get to Phoenix” - were among the five nominees for the Grammy's Song of the Year award. He went on to write a string of major hits for Campbell, including “Wichita Lineman,” “Galveston,” "Where's the Playground Susie,” “Honey Come Back,” and many others. Additionally, he penned “MacArthur Park,” which was a hit for a diverse range of artists, including Richard Harris, Waylon Jennings, Tony Bennett, Andy Williams, and Donna Summer; “The Worst That Could Happen,” which was a Top 5 hit for The Brooklyn Bridge; “Didn't We,” which was recorded by Thelma Houston, Frank Sinatra, Diana Ross, and Barbra Streisand; “All I Know,” which became a Top 10 hit for Art Garfunkel; “The Moon's a Harsh Mistress,” which has been recorded by Joe Cocker, Judy Collins, Linda Ronstadt, and Josh Groban; and “If These Walls Could Speak,” which was recorded by Glen Campbell, Amy Grant, Nanci Griffith, and Shawn Colvin. Others who've covered material from the Jimmy Webb songbook include Diana Ross, Dusty Springfield, Nina Simone, The Four Tops, Roberta Flack, The Temptations, The Association, Tom Jones, Dionne Warwick, Cass Elliot, Harry Nilsson, Nancy Wilson, Cher, Bob Dylan, The Everly Brothers, Nick Cave, John Denver, Kenny Rogers, Sheena Easton, David Crosby, Rosemary Clooney, Michael Feinstein, R.E.M., Aimee Mann, America, Aretha Franklin, Isaac Hayes, Peggy Lee, Bette Midler, James Taylor, Carrie Underwood, Dwight Yoakam, and The Highwaymen (consisting of Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson), who took Jimmy's song “Highwayman” to #1, earning him a Grammy for Country Song of the Year. As an artist, he has released more than a dozen albums. One of the most celebrated songwriters on the planet, Jimmy is the only individual to win Grammy awards for music, lyrics, and orchestration. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Great American Songbook Hall of Fame. Additionally, he has received ASCAP's Lifetime Achievement Award, the Influential Songwriter Award from the National Music Publishers Association, and the Academy of Country Music's prestigious Poets Award. Rosemary Butler Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson Part 2 Rosemary Butler has sung with everyone on every song I love. Pretty damn close. In this, our 2nd sitdown, Rose picked up where we left off, post Paul & Ringo, The Rolling Stones, and Three Dog Night - see Part 1 for those fab stories, and took us through Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, The Section, Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald (her first student, who taught her to create her own unique voice), Neil Diamond (on his Christmas album… to which Neil said, I'm Jewish, why am I doing this) Joe Cocker, Johnny Mathis, The Bish, Willie Nelson, David Lindley (the most fun), Warren Zevon, Alan Parsons, Don Henley, Bruce Springsteen (when he was sleeping under the Jersey pier with his guitar), Billy Joel, Joni Mitchell (her idol), and Paul Simon. Rosemary's voice intermingles magically with all of them. Stories, stories, more stories about hero after shero. Peter Asher, she credits with opening the doors. Teaching and sharing what she's learned and what she knows, you too can study with the master - reach out at RosemaryButler.com. And, catch her Live with The Tribe at their 10th anniversary celebration at The Canyon Club in L.A. where it all started. I'm so grateful for this opportunity to traverse a career and a life brilliantly lived. The road, the buses, the food, the fun, and the hit music her iconic voice is synonymous with. Can I ever hear Running on Empty and not think of her… no way. Love the Rosemary Butler! John Mulaney's bold case for inducting Weird Al Yankovic into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Is Weird Al more deserving than some of these icons? Jeff and Jeremy weigh the pros and cons, reminiscing about Al's hilarious costume changes, radio fake-outs with hits like “Eat It,” and his unique ability to transform serious songs into comedic gold. In this week's episode of Friends Talking Nerdy, Professor Aubrey and Tim the Nerd dive deep into the just-announced 2025 Class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. With their usual mix of thoughtful analysis, historical insight, and a healthy dose of nerdy passion, the duo breaks down the list of official inductees and shares their thoughts on what each artist or contributor brings to the legacy of rock and popular music. The conversation kicks off with a celebration of long-overdue recognition, as they discuss the inclusion of Bad Company, Joe Cocker, and the energetic pioneer Chubby Checker. They reflect on the vocal power and emotional resonance of Cocker's performances, the timeless grooves of Bad Company, and Checker's role in shaping early rock dance culture.Next up, they shift to iconic voices and game-changers of the '80s and '90s. Cyndi Lauper and Salt N Pepa spark discussion on pop's evolution and hip-hop's expanding influence on the Rock Hall. OutKast's induction offers a springboard into the genre-defying brilliance of André 3000 and Big Boi, while Soundgarden's inclusion brings a reflective moment on grunge, Chris Cornell's legacy, and the band's impact on alternative rock. The duo also delves into the raw garage rock revivalism of The White Stripes and the poetic lyricism of cult-favorite Warren Zevon, dissecting how both acts carved unique paths in music history. Their conversation highlights how the Hall is slowly broadening its definition of rock — and why that matters.Beyond the performers, Professor Aubrey and Tim celebrate the often unsung heroes of music with the inductions of Thom Bell, Nicky Hopkins, Carol Kaye, and Lenny Waronker. From Bell's lush Philadelphia soul arrangements to Kaye's legendary bass lines, they shine a spotlight on the behind-the-scenes talent that shaped the sound of generations. To close out the episode, the hosts revisit their predictions from Episode 401, where they each chose who they believed should be inducted this year. With the full 2025 class revealed, the friendly rivalry comes to a head as they tally up their correct picks. Who had the better crystal ball? Tune in to find out!As always, we wish to thank Christopher Lazarek for his wonderful theme song.
