Kari and Joe have friend of the podcast Chad back to revisit a topic he thought of a couple years back: songs that debuted just as the decade was ending that probably are more 90s but that we still love. This time around Joe Cocker, The Smithereens, After 7, Pixies are in the mix along with one acid house DJ with too many names (Dancing Danny D, Danny D, D-Mob) and another acid house DJ with infinite uses of the lyric "welcome to the 90s". Thanks dude, we have been welcomed. All this, plus tidbits covering the Christmas UK number one and a cover of the most beloved 80s Christmas song that raises so many questions and provides no answers. Turn off your 37th rewatch of An Innocent Man, it will be there when you get back, and listen!Send us a text
Musical Journey Through the Final Week of December: This Week in Music History As the calendar year draws to a close, the week of December 22nd through December 28th stands as a powerful reminder that music history never sleeps—not even during the holidays. In this captivating episode of “This Week in Music History,” hosts Buzz Knight and Harry Jacobs take listeners on an extraordinary journey through decades of musical milestones, tragic losses, and triumphant achievements that have shaped the soundtrack of our lives. The conversation opens with a poignant reflection on the end of another year of exploring music’s rich tapestry. Buzz muses on how, despite covering similar calendar dates year after year, they continue to uncover new stories and perspectives. “When you think about it, you would think, well, if you do it year after year, you’re going to be talking about the same things,” Buzz observes. “And the truth is, we continue to uncover new and different things.” This sentiment perfectly captures the infinite depth of music history and the endless stories waiting to be told. The Clash’s Revolutionary Voice Falls Silent December 22nd marks the anniversary of one of punk rock’s most devastating losses—the death of Joe Strummer in 2002. Born John Meller, the Clash frontman passed away from pneumonia at a time when his influence on music and culture was still reverberating through generations of artists. The Clash represented more than just a band; they were a political and social force that challenged conventions and inspired countless musicians to use their platform for more than entertainment. Strummer’s legacy as a voice for the disenfranchised and his commitment to authentic, passionate rock and roll continues to inspire artists today. A Candle in the Wind That Lost Its Luster The hosts touch on Elton John’s iconic “Candle in the Wind,” originally written about Marilyn Monroe in 1967. While the song initially resonated as a beautiful tribute, its later reworking for Princess Diana’s funeral created what Buzz describes as “overkill.” The constant repetition following Diana’s tragic death in 1997 caused the song to lose some of its original emotional impact for many listeners. This phenomenon speaks to how even the most beautiful pieces of music can become dulled through overexposure, demonstrating the delicate balance between honoring memory and respecting the power of restraint. Cheap Trick’s Complex Family Dynamics A fascinating deep dive into the internal dynamics of Cheap Trick reveals the complicated nature of band relationships and business structures. Rick Nielsen, the legendary guitar player known for his collection of hundreds of guitars—including his famous five-neck Hamer guitar—represents the performative and creative heart of Cheap Trick. The band’s 2016 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction marked a peak moment, but beneath the surface lay complex tensions. The departure of bassist Bunny Carlos and the subsequent addition of Rick Nielsen’s son, Dax, initially appeared to follow the pattern of other famous rock family transitions, like Michael Anthony’s replacement by Wolfgang Van Halen in Van Halen. However, the reality proved far more nuanced. Buzz’s research uncovered ongoing strife within the band, though Carlos remains part of the Cheap Trick corporation—a business structure similar to Journey’s arrangement with Steve Perry. This setup ensures that founding members maintain ownership stakes even when they’re no longer actively touring, though it can also create lasting tension and legal complications. The hosts explore the darker side of band politics, touching on stories of sabotage and ego clashes. There are tales of Journey band members allegedly pulling on Steve Perry’s microphone cord during performances to make him trip—petty acts of revenge that reveal the intense pressures and personalities at play in successful rock bands. Yet they also note that time can heal wounds, pointing to Perry and Neal Schon’s apparently warm relationship at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, despite whatever conflicts may have existed in their past. The Therapeutic Approach: A New Model for Band Longevity In a refreshing counterpoint to tales of band dysfunction, Buzz shares insights from his conversation with The Head and the Heart on his “Music Saved Me” podcast. This indie pop alternative band has taken an innovative approach to managing interpersonal relationships: group therapy. Band members openly discuss how they’ve used professional counseling to navigate the challenges of creative collaboration, life on the road, and the inevitable conflicts that arise when passionate artists work together for years. This revelation prompts fascinating speculation about how many legendary bands might have avoided breakups, lawsuits, and lasting bitterness if they’d embraced therapy earlier. The deeply personal nature of musical creation—leaving your heart exposed in every performance, every recording—makes these relationships particularly vulnerable to conflict. As Harry notes, “even if it’s a drummer or a bass player, it’s still your piece of that performance of that song you left your heart out there.” The music exists forever as a testament to that vulnerability, creating permanent emotional stakes that can intensify disagreements and hurt feelings. Joe Cocker: A Voice That Couldn’t Be Contained The passing of Joe Cocker at age 70 in 2014 brings reflection on an artist whose expressive, explosive performances made him unforgettable. While 70 might not seem particularly old from our current vantage point—as Buzz and Harry, approaching 60 and 70 respectively, can attest—Cocker’s hard-living lifestyle took its toll. His performances were legendary, inspiring John Belushi’s spot-on “Saturday Night Live” impersonation that Cocker himself found hilarious. Cocker’s career highlights include his cover of The Beatles’ “With a Little Help from My Friends,” which became the theme for the television series “The Wonder Years,” and “Up Where We Belong,” his duet with Jennifer Warnes from the film “An Officer and a Gentleman.” The latter song became inextricably linked with that powerful film starring Richard Gere and Lou Gossett Jr., whose portrayal of a drill instructor was genuinely frightening and contributed to one of cinema’s most memorable moments—Gere’s character’s desperate declaration: “I got nowhere else to go.” Eddie Vedder: The Humble Superstar December 23rd celebrates the birthday of Eddie Vedder, born in 1964, whose appreciation for musical history and those who came before him sets him apart in an industry often dominated by ego. The hosts draw parallels to Dave Grohl, noting how both artists exhibit genuine humility and respect for their influences. Vedder’s collaborations with Neil Young, particularly their version of “Rockin’ in the Free World,” helped establish his credibility beyond Pearl Jam circles, while his passionate renditions of The Who’s classics—especially “Love, Reign o’er Me”—have become legendary in their own right. Vedder’s versatility shines through in his cover work, from The Waiting by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers to The English Beat’s “Save It for Later,” featured in the television series “The Bear.” His interpretation of Tom Petty’s “Room at the Top” particularly resonates, described as “so beautiful” in its delicate handling of Petty’s original composition. The discussion of “The Bear” opens a tangent about the show’s exceptional soundtrack curation, featuring all Tom Petty covers including a barn-burning version of “Runnin’ Down the Dream” by Larkin Poe. Despite Pearl Jam’s reputation for deep cuts and extensive catalogs—which might intimidate casual fans—the hosts acknowledge being captivated whenever they hear Vedder sing anything. His voice and interpretive skills transcend the barrier of familiarity, making even unknown material compelling. The Unsung Guitar Legends of Country Music The conversation shifts to Glen Campbell, whose passing on December 24th prompts reflection on his extraordinary but often underappreciated guitar skills. Campbell represents a generation of country musicians whose technical prowess gets overshadowed by genre stereotypes. Like Roy Clark, Campbell could do virtually anything on guitar, yet many people don’t associate country music with virtuoso instrumentalists. Campbell’s session work tells the story of his versatility—he played on albums by The Monkees, The Beach Boys, Frank Sinatra, and soundtracks for Elvis films and Phil Spector productions. This breadth demonstrates how the Nashville studio system produced some of the most skilled musicians in any genre, even if they didn’t always receive recognition outside country music circles. The discussion of Campbell also touches on Brian Wilson’s 1964 breakdown, a tragic moment that had long-lasting consequences for the Beach Boys and Wilson himself. The psychological damage inflicted by Wilson’s abusive father Murry Wilson—compared to Joe Jackson’s treatment of his children—demonstrates how family trauma can derail even the most talented artists. Brian’s struggles with touring and performing were just the beginning of severe mental health challenges that would plague him throughout his career. The Police: Reunion Done Right In 2007, The Police earned recognition as the year’s highest-grossing tour, thirty years after the band’s inception and 24-25 years after their previous collaboration. The reunion tour, which Buzz witnessed in Las Vegas, comprised over 150 shows worldwide and generated nearly $400 million—not a bad payday for a comeback. This success demonstrated the enduring appeal of Sting, Andy Summers, and Stewart Copeland’s unique blend of rock, reggae, and new wave, proving that some artistic chemistry remains potent even after decades apart.Support the show: https://takinawalk.com/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In 1978, Paul and saxophonist Arno Hecht founded the well-known group called the Uptown Horns. As their visibility increased, the band was recruited for rock and roll gigs and played many of New York's most famous clubs. Paul and the Uptown Horns went on their first rock and roll tour with the J. Geils Band in 1981 and that led to many other opportunities including engagements with The Rolling Stones, Robert Plant, Tom Waits, Joe Cocker, James Brown, Pat Benatar, and Ray Charles. The band lists recording credits on over 150 albums including James Brown's Grammy Award winning "Living in America" and tracks for Joe Cocker, Albert Collins, Bonnie Raitt, Robert Palmer, Lou Reed and REM. In addition to continuing to play music, he began writing and found critical success with Hoboken to Hollywood, which earned him the 2011 Ovation Award for Musical Direction. Paul was also awarded Best Musical Direction by Stage Scene LA for Louis & Keely: Live' at the Sahara, which had a record run, playing to sold out audiences at the Geffen Playhouse. "Hollywood" Paul earned his nickname back in the 1980's due to his prodigious knowledge of film lore. Though his extensive contributions to the LA music scene have also helped add to that fabulous moniker. Paul's fame is within the world of Rock and Roll. On his latest album, "The Litteral Truth," he brings us a collection of songs that inspired his personal musical development. The Brecker Brothers, Edgar Winter and Steely Dan are a few of the artists we cover on the record, and revisiting these great cuts and reinterpreting them was a joyous excursion for all involved. With modern automobiles becoming more and more complex, checking batteries (especially when there are tons of weird or seemingly unrelated problems) is always a good Bet. Things like Visual Inspections and Scanning the vehicle for faults seem to be a given, but can be complicated when an advisor is diagnosing from the chair. Any time that you have access to a vehicles repair history or CarFax report is a good thing, especially when they are in for the fourth time in a month for the same problem and hoping that somehow that problem has gotten cheaper to fix — which is hasn't, it never has, and that isn't how this works! It is with heavy hearts that we present this week's episode as a tribute to Paul Daniel "Ace" Frehley. The rock 'n' roll icon, legendary guitar god, and former KISS guitarist, passed away on October 16, 2025, after suffering a fall in his home studio weeks earlier. Kevin has a profound connection to KISS and Ace as a lifelong fan and proud member of the KISS Army. While not an obscure artist by any means (the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer had 10 gold records, 5 multi-platinum records with KISS, and a platinum solo album), the duo tries to share some lesser-known songs, including a few crazy guest appearances. Excuse Kevin's extensive ramblings about the great Space Ace, but this loss was hard, and the tribute is necessary. Ace was a true character, who played a character, and played with character. A genuine original. A true rock star.New to InObscuria? Typically, what we do is exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. In the case of this particular episode, we are leaning towards the FORGOTTEN. Although a member of a band that holds the RIAA distinction of having the most gold-certified albums overall by any American band is hardly forgotten… In any case, we are paying tribute to one of the greatest guitarists of all time! Rest In Peace, Ace. There will never be another like you!Songs this week include:Criss – “Bad Attitude (feat. Ace Frehley)” from Cat #1(1994)Anton Fig – “Know Where You Go (feat. Love, lust, and heartbreak are the secret soundtrack of the LA canyons. In this episode of My Rock Moment we welcome Emmeline Summerton of Instagram's Lost Canyons LA, a historian of the LA Canyons and former writer of the New Topanga Times. Together we trace that soundtrack through eight songs — uncovering the romance, the messiness and the broken hearts behind the lyrics. We start with “Guinnevere,” David Crosby's mysterious song inspired by 3 women — Christine Hinton, Joni Mitchell, and the surprising third muse, “Delta Lady” — Leon Russell's ode to Rita Coolidge and the wild, studio-to-road romance that sent them straight into Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs tour. Then we move to the Mamas & the Papas' “Go Where You Wanna Go,” a sunny single born from the band's very messy affairs. From there: “Our House,” Graham Nash's tiny, perfect snapshot of life with Joni Mitchell in Laurel Canyon — ordinary moments made into a classic. Then Joni's own “All I Want' about her relationship with James Taylor. We'll also unpack “Leather and Lace,” the duet that reunited Stevie Nicks and Don Henley after a broken romance and leer jet flirtations; “Faithless Love,” J.D. Souther's devastating ballad given wings by Linda Ronstadt during their fraught romance and end with Neil Young's "A Man Needs a Maid" off of Harvest. This is a tour of romance and ruin, tenderness and betrayal — the songs that turned private heartbreak into something the rest of us could sing along to. We'll share the stories behind each track and the music that made the canyons heartbreak famous. Tim Pierce cracked the YouTube code and is such a masterful teacher, after 15 years, I finally get it! So what if he's a world renowned session guitarist who's played on the Goo Goo Dolls' Iris, which has over 5 billion streams, on Michael Jackson's Black or White and his work was left intact, did 5 albums with Joe Cocker, Bon Jovi's first hit single, toured with Rick Springfield for four years when he was the biggest rockstar on the planet… so what! The man has made the internet his oyster and managed to make it work for him to unheard of success. He lives every day his way, helping scores of musicians be better guitarists, and is educating me on how to finally thrive on YouTube! We talked Tim's miraculous 42 marriage, years of sobriety, how he got started, the choices he made along the way bringing him to this day… his daily routine, his incredible focus, determination, intelliegence, and talent that's brought him success beyond dreams without leaving his home, except when he chooses, all while being of service to others hungry for his tutelage, including my own Snuffy, a longtime hero of Tim's. I'm so fired up to implement what he taught me about videos. I might borrow one of Snuff's acoustics and tune into Tim's beginner's classes, and try my long-taloned fingers on the strings for the first time in a gazillion years. Tim's such a patient and gifted teacher I might strum out a tune or two. You could too. Send us a textEddie stops by the show to discuss the hit song he wrote, 'Hit Me With Your Best Shot', his last CD, 'Film School', and so much more. ******The first time I heard Pat Benatar's version of ‘Hit Me With Your Best Shot,' I was almost arrested for loitering,” laughs internationally lauded Canadian songwriter, producer, performer, and rights advocate Eddie Schwartz about the song he penned that became Benatar's first Top Ten single in 1980. “I was walking down Yonge Street in Toronto when I heard it blasting out of a renowned hair salon and stopped dead in my tracks. I even think I started to drool [laughs]. As I stood there in a state of shock, a salon stylist called the police because of my strange behavior. When they arrived, they ordered me to move or face arrest. When I tried to explain to them that I just heard my song on the radio for the first time, they said, 'Sure, buddy. Move along." Stepping out from behind the curtain and into the spotlight, Schwartz will be physically releasing his full-length studio release on CD, FILM SCHOOL, on November 12, 2025. His songs have been recorded by an astonishing roster: Carly Simon, Joe Cocker, America, Donna Summer, Rita Coolidge, Rascal Flatts, and Mountain, among many others. As a producer, his credits include the Doobie Brothers' Cycles, Carrack's Groove Approved, and his own albums, all resonating with an unmistakable blend of craftsmanship and soul. This six-song EP finds the storied songwriter who authored such classics as Paul Carrack's "Don't Shed a Tear" (1987), The Doobie Brothers' "The Doctor" (1989), the aforementioned “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” (among hundreds of others) on the other side of the studio glass.“It's a difficult time right now and I freely admit to struggling with how to cope with the daily insanity,” says Eddie about the current political and socio-economic climate. Instead of subjecting himself to the barrage of news, he opted instead to return to the studio and write songs. “The moment of writing ‘We Win' was profound for me because I found a way to a more hopeful place that helped with anger, sadness and bewilderment at how we got here,” he explains. “I felt the message of ‘We Win' offered some sanity that I needed to cling to, that I needed to find for myself. And I wanted to share it in the hope it might work for others as well.” After an extended creative drought that plagued him for years, writing the single and subsequent songs on Film School was a turning point for him. “After a number of years doing the Nashville-style co-writing every day—two songs a day, five days a week— I burned out,” Eddie reflects. “The blank page stayed blank for a long time,” he explains of the rigorous demands of being a songwriter in today's music business. The catalyst to cure his writer's block was his frustration with current events. “My struggle to process the world at this moment in time and muster some resolve was what propelled me back in the writing mindset. ‘We Win' acknowledges the pain and the struggle, but professes love means you don't have to succumb to it.”*********If you would like to contact the show about being a guest, please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comUpcoming guests can be found: https://dmneedom.com/upcoming-guest Follow us on Social MediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomIntro and Outro music compliments of Fast Suzi©2025 Better To...Podcast with D. In celebration of the show now fully hitting it's 50th anniversary, we're going back to the earliest episode we've yet to cover: Rob Reiner, with no real musical guest. Except, we do get some music in the episode. We get A LOT of things, actually. Much like the show's first episode, there's a bunch of elements in the gumbo for tonight; John Belushi doing his Joe Cocker, Andy Kaufman and his record player return to the show, The Lockers do some street dancing, Albert Brooks turns in what has to be the longest pre-taped segment the show has ever aired. Hell, even Denny Dillon is there! It's a fascinating building block towards what the show would become, with a myriad of "firsts" in play and William Ham is on board to help us figure it all out!

Derek Trucks - Exclusive Interview It's not every day you get to sit down with one of your all-time favourite guitarists. Derek Trucks — slide innovator, bandleader, and co-captain (with Susan Tedeschi) of the mighty Tedeschi Trucks Band — joined me to talk about the long-awaited release of Mad Dogs & Englishmen Revisited (Live at LOCKN'), the legacy of Joe Cocker and Leon Russell, the telepathy of sharing a band with your spouse, Indian classical music as a nightly compass, and the quietly radical idea of being a joyful, human big band in turbulent times. The conversation traces how a one-off 2015 tribute bloomed into a definitive live album, why “Space Captain” helped launch TTB itself, what happened when a rehearsal room turned electric with 20 original Mad Dogs, and why Derek's red SG keeps calling him home. Along the way we touch on grief, gratitude, and the kind of communal music-making that makes ushers stop in their tracks at soundcheck.Thank you for all your supportPhil AstonNow Spinning Magazine

In addition, a new live video of Frampton performing the song with longtime collaborator Gordon Kennedy is premiering on The Huffington Post today [insert link]. For the first time ever, Frampton brings us stripped-down versions of his classic hits including “Lines On My Face,” “Do You Feel Like I Do,” “Show Me The Way” and more. Acoustic Classics also includes one new song, “All Down to Me,” which was co-written by Kennedy, who also co-produced Frampton's Grammy Award-winning album Fingerprints. “All Down to Me” is also the only track on the record that features a guest musician. See below for full track listing. The new album was mixed by Grammy Award-winning engineer Jeff Balding (Don Henley, Lionel Richie, Joe Cocker) and produced by Frampton himself. Of the recording process, Frampton explains, “The approach I took on this was that each song came across as if you are the first person to hear this song after I wrote it. I had to reverse engineer each song in order to get this result, which I feel I achieved.”Acoustic Classics is available for pre-order now and a special pre-order bundle is being offered exclusively on www.frampton.com, which includes the album, a pick set and signed lyric sheet. Frampton will also perform on DirecTV and AT&T's new weekly music program, the Audience Network, March 4. The programming will be available to both subscribers of DirecTV and AT&T U-Verse and the two platforms' mobile apps. Moreover, Frampton has extended his “Peter Frampton Raw, An Acoustic Tour” with more dates next month. Kennedy will join him again for the March run along with Frampton's son, singer and guitarist Julian Frampton. Peter Frampton remains one of the most celebrated artists and guitarists in rock history. At 16, he was lead singer and guitarist for British band the Herd. At 18, he co-founded one of the first super groups, seminal rock act Humble Pie. His session work includes collaborations with such legendary artists as George Harrison, Harry Nilsson, David Bowie, Jerry Lee Lewis, Ringo Starr, John Entwistle and many others. His fifth solo album, the electrifying Frampton Comes Alive! is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year and remains one of the top-selling live records of all time. We're going back to a time before Queen records existed. To a time when the summer of love had wound down but Leon Russell was still tokin'. This one is a song he wrote for Joe Cocker, who released it as the first single from his self-titled second album. November Rain is brought up again, for some ungodly reason and we discuss the relative merits of mic-ing toms from above or below for a tedious amount of time. Also, we try to figure out if Leon Russell or Joe Cocker would have ever made it onto American Idol. No. The answer is no. If Kev were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Delta Lady", or possibly, "Leon is stooooooooooooooooned man!"The sixteenth installment in this podcast-within-a-podcast covers a song submitted by Lynn DeAnda; "Delta Lady", by Leon Russell. If this song were a pie, it would be cherry with whipped cream; it's tasty, rich, and filling! If you want to get involved in the Kofi Klub, you can make a donation here: https://ko-fi.com/seasidepodreview and let us know which song you want us to add to the wheel! As we wrap up our Soundtrack Summer series, we’re going out with a blockbuster — the iconic 1992 soundtrack to The Bodyguard, starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner. This album wasn’t just a soundtrack; it became a global cultural phenomenon and one of the best-selling albums of all time. Led by Whitney Houston’s immortal performance of “I Will Always Love You”, this soundtrack redefined what a film score could achieve commercially and emotionally. That soaring Dolly Parton cover — with its a cappella opening and powerhouse delivery — remains one of the most recognized ballads in history. But The Bodyguard soundtrack is much more than one hit. It features additional Houston classics like “I Have Nothing,” “Run to You,” “Queen of the Night,” and “I’m Every Woman”, showcasing her dynamic vocal range across pop, R&B, and soul genres. Side B of the record includes contributions from other artists like Kenny G, Lisa Stansfield, and Joe Cocker, balancing the album with smooth jazz and adult contemporary vibes. With over 45 million copies sold worldwide, The Bodyguard is not only the best-selling soundtrack of all time — it cemented Whitney Houston’s place as a global superstar and ushered in a new era for movie music. It’s only fitting that we close out our summer-long celebration of soundtrack classics with this legendary album. From funky breakdancing beats to heart-wrenching ballads, Soundtrack Summer has been a journey through vinyl’s greatest movie moments — and The Bodyguard hits every emotional note to bring it home.

Professor Dame Ijeoma Uchegbu is Professor of Pharmaceutical Nanoscience at University College London and President of Wolfson College, University of Cambridge. She has devoted her career to harnessing the potential of nanoparticles – which are less than a thousandth of the width of a human hair - to take medicines to hard-to-reach areas of the body such as the back of the eye and the brain. Using nanoparticles in this way is said to increase the efficacy of medicines and reduce side effects. Ijeoma was born in London where her parents had settled from Nigeria. At 13 she moved with her family to Nigeria where she developed an enduring love of chemistry. In 2010 she co-founded a pharmaceutical company Nanomerics with her husband. The company is currently developing eyedrops to treat blindness and a nasal spray to target pain which she hopes will go some way to addressing the opioid crisis.
