Alanis Morissette's 1995 album "Jagged Little Pill" was ripe for mid-90s success -- and it more than delivered. Morissette -- previously a child actor and dance-pop artist -- dug into her soul, and (with the help of songwriter Glen Ballard) released an album of angry, frank and catchy post-grunge rock hits. To say these songs struck a nerve is an understatement. Six singles came off this album with five of them becoming bonafide radio and MTV hits: "Hand in My Pocket," "Ironic," "You Oughta Know," "You Learn" and "Head Over Feet." Alanis was able to unleash her inner emotions and thoughts in a raw offering assisted by some of the biggest musicians from that era -- and it showed.

During the Second World War, at least three million Indian people, who were British subjects, died in the Bengal Famine. It was one of the largest losses of civilian life on the Allied side. But there is no memorial to them anywhere in the world - not even a plaque. Can three million people disappear from public memory? From the award-winning creator and presenter of Partition Voices and Three Pounds in My Pocket, this is the story of the Bengal Famine of 1943. For the first time it is told by those who were there - farmers and fishermen, artists and writers, colonial British and everyday citizens. Nearly all of the testimony in the series has never been broadcast before. Eighty years on, those who lived through it are a vanishing generation. Time is running out to record their memories. We begin in 1942. As the Japanese sweep through South East Asia, Calcutta (now Kolkata) is inundated with hundreds of thousands of Allied soldiers from all over the world. Fear of a Japanese invasion of British India provokes a consequential decision.Presenter : Kavita Puri Series Producer: Ant Adeane Editor: Emma Rippon Sound design and mix: Eloise Whitmore Production Coordinators: Maria Ogundele and Sabine Schereck Original music: Felix TaylorWith thanks to Dr Janam Mukherjee, Professor Joya Chatterji and Dr Diya Gupta.Interviews with American soldiers courtesy of The National World War II Museum, New Orleans https://www.nationalww2museum.org/ Interviews with G S Khosla and Debotosh Das Gupta courtesy of the University of CambridgeMajor General Dharitri Kumar Palit interviewed by Gillian Wright, 1987, British Library reference C63/195/09. https://thinkfuture.com | https://aidaily.us | In this intriguing episode, we explore the groundbreaking advancements in AI technology that enable reading human thoughts. A company called DeWave has developed a method to transform brainwaves into text, offering phenomenal benefits, particularly for individuals who struggle with traditional communication. The host delves into the potential of this technology to revolutionize our interaction with AI, envisioning a world where every question in our mind is instantly answered by AI, akin to Samuel R. Delany's sci-fi concept in "Stars in My Pocket like Grains of Sand." However, this concept raises critical concerns about privacy, misinformation, and the integrity of the information fed back into our minds. The episode provocatively questions the ethical boundaries of this AI development, highlighting both its transformative potential and the pressing need to discern truth from falsehood in the AI-assisted omniscient future. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thinkfuture/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thinkfuture/support

When Judith Light became an actor, she swore she'd never do a soap opera or a sitcom. She didn't see it as serious acting. But her roles as Karen Wolek on the soap One Life to Live and Angela Bower on the sitcom Who's the Boss? forever changed her views on those genres, and made her a star. In this episode, she tells Guy how, after early success on TV, she struggled to find her way back on to the stage. On Action, Action, and More Action In our last +1, we hung out with one of the friendliest guys in baseball (The Mayor Sean Casey!) and his legendary coach Harvey Dorfman. I want to spend a little more time with Sean and bring another legendary coach to the party—MY coach, Phil Stutz. It's funny because when Sean told me the story shout how Harvey RUTHLESSLY focused on the process goals NOT the outcome goals, I immediately thought of Phil. As we've discussed, Phil says the same thing in his own way. He says that most people focus on the OUTCOMES in their lives when they should be focused on the ACTION they are taking in pursuit of their desired outcomes. The way he frames it is to imagine pearls. You can spend all your time COUNTING how many pearls you have (or don't have!)… Or… You can ignore the counting and simply focus on STRINGING THE NEXT PEARL. Over and over and over again we focus on what needs to get done right now. What's important RIGHT NOW? Do it. String the next pearl. Over and over and over and over again. You do that enough time and you know what happens? You get a LOT more of the outcomes you've been wanting. And… Somewhere along the way you learn that the REAL prize is knowing how to flip the switch and get into action—showing up as the best, most Heroic version of yourself. Not someday… Today. Let's do that. +1. +1. +1. Let's go! P.S. I love pearls. I have one on my desk at all times to remind me of the wisdom from this +1 on How to Make a Pearl and this wisdom from this +1 on The Pearl in My Pocket.
There's ways I like to do things, But I don't always have control. So, it's better to surrender, allow and accept, Rather than close my mind, heart, and soul. Alright, before we jump to conclusions, let's say this report is about redefining the image many of us carry about just what surrender is. In Hollywood cowboy and war movies, we've been shown surrender to be when the "loser" holds up a white flag and the "winner" takes all. So let's create a new term called "Selective Surrendering." Selective Surrendering says that we can keep our power, perhaps even increase our strength, while at the same time letting go of what is no longer serving us. This can simply be an internal process of "letting go and letting God," or letting go of fear, old limiting beliefs, or a host of other personal issues. On another level, in our relationships, it can have to do with letting go or surrendering CERTAIN expectations, fantasies, hopes, and dreams BUT NOT ALL OF THEM. In business and our social relationships, it can look like surrendering to SOME of the government overreach or our partner's unjust demands, but not giving up, throwing in the towel, or letting them run over us. In general, at this time, we need to get beyond the extremes of "all or nothing," "in or out," and "win or lose," and see that all relationships have to do with compromising (PARTS of ourselves), cooperating, and communicating (more and more the deeper you go). So while these days may be challenging us with various crises in different parts of our lives, these crises can help us define, refine, and clarify our objectives, saving us time in the long run. So hang in there, don't give up the fort, just what's best for the good of all. Check out Alanis' "One Hand in My Pocket!" https://youtu.be/aLnsjWijfUI Interview! For those who might not know, when Pakistan was carved out of India to serve as a separate country for Muslims in the sub-continent, people on both sides—of a hasty defined border—found their lives uprooted. The tales from the Partition are many and horrific. The stories expose the raw side of a humanity filled with hatred, with mobs red in tooth and claw setting upon each other. The announcement of Partition caused Hindu-Muslim violence to break out—some say unexpectedly.Millions fled their homes in fear to cross the border to safety. Most of them had to leave their lives and all their possessions behind. Some of them found a new home in England. They dug their heels in and got their lives back.My guest today, Kavita Puri is a British journalist and a radio broadcaster. She is also the daughter of one of those who fled their homes. For many years now, Kavita has documented the oral histories of the immigrants from the Indian sub-continent, to a postwar Britain. Her series called Three Pounds In My Pocket told the stories of these pioneer immigrants. Her show—Partition Voices—record the first person accounts of people directly impacted by Partition. What are oral histories?Academics will tell you that oral history focuses on recording and interpreting the voices of individuals who might have been left out of history. It's all about preserving an alternative form of public history. But that's the boring version.Any writer or journalist will tell you that stories are about people. And their lives. Their thoughts, fears and their dreams. Recording their history requires a good measure of sensitivity. The more you feel a connection to their story, the better you can retell it.Kavita Puri has lived inside the story of the people who were victims of the Partition and she is deeply attached to the stories she retells in Partition Voices.Kavita was reading from the final chapter of the latest release of Partition Voices, at one point she was overcome with emotion and we had to stop recording. For this reason maybe, her book is compelling. I understand now why the book spoke to me.And it is my privilege to be able to introduce her to speak to us all.So here's Kavita Puri joining me from what I suspect is a hotel room in Spain.Kavita, welcome to The Literary City.ABOUT KAVITA PURIKavita Puri is a British journalist, radio broadcaster, and author. Her 2019 book, Partition Voices: Untold British Stories, is based on her award-winning BBC Radio 4 documentary series of the same name. Puri has worked on BBC Newsnight as a political producer, film producer and assistant editor, and as the editor of Our World, a foreign affairs documentary programme. Her 2014 BBC Radio 4 series, Three Pounds in My Pocket, told the stories of South Asians who migrated to post-war Britain. In 2015, Puri was named Journalist of the Year by the Asian Media Awards. In 2018, then-Prime Minister Theresa May appointed Puri as a trustee of the Victoria and Albert Museum for a period of four years.Buy Partition Voices here: https://amzn.to/3JhSz2sWHAT'S THAT WORD?!Co-host Pranati "Pea" Madhav joins Ramjee Chandran in the segment "What's That Word?", where they discuss the phrase "Red in tooth and claw".WANT TO BE ON THE SHOW?Reach us by mail: theliterarycity@explocity.com or simply, tlc@explocity.com.Or here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/theliterarycity.Or here: https://www.instagram.com/explocityblr/
The first time you laugh, smile, or feel happiness while grieving can be very unsettling. You might feel like you aren't properly grieving if you get distracted for a moment and don't feel the exquisite pain of your loss. Sukey Forbes wants you to know that not only is it ok to do those things, it's necessary. Sukey has learned a lot about grief in the 18 years since her daughter Charlotte died at only six years old. Sukey tells Claire how she was able to parent her two other children while grieving for Charlotte, why she thinks we need to be careful when we talk about being resilient in the face of grief, and why being open-minded while you are grieving can be so important to your healing. Hobby-enthusiast Mark Smith joins me on the latest episode of the Tabletop Miniature Hobby Podcast. This week, we're talking about how to get more kids into the hobby. Did we peak in the 90s? Are there simply too many other "immediate" distractions out there now for miniature painting and gaming to compete with? This was a really interesting conversation to have and, though the title might sound pessimistic, there are still lots of things to be positive about. By the way - as a bit of a nostalgia trip, be sure to check out my childhood Space Wolves, Lizardmen, and Undead armies. We cover a lot of ground on this episode, but some of the topics of discussion include:The impact of that HeroQuest advertWe ponder whether Games Workshop is still serious about marketing towards young people? And if they are or were - are they the right people to be championing the hobby to da yoof?Would it be better if young folks were introduced to the hobby via clubs, groups, or mentors? After all, a company like Games Workshop's ultimate aim is to make money, and most kids have little or none of that.We pose the question of why there seems to be so many world-class miniature painters posting work online these days, and if this could potentially be offputting to beginners. We also talk about the benefits and appeals of analogue hobbies, the rise of video games, and the wonders of monopose miniatures. For anyone looking to introduce their kids to an accessible miniatures game too, I thoroughly recommend Song of Blades & Heroes. And bonus points if you make your warband out of Monster in My Pocket figures!I also hawk the usual links for the Miniature Hobbyist Survey and the Worst Patreon Ever.
