So there's four of these, but only the second is numbered?The previous episode had some fantastic beasts, but this one is set in the century of dragons. That's right, the Xbox Game Pass "Surprise Me" button has selected the fourth title in Bioware's RPG franchise for assessment on this episode! Well, it's the fourth one if you leave out Awakening and that freemium mobile game, but most of the franchise isn't numbered anyway, so is anyone keeping track? Further diverging from its early roots as a tactical RPG, this latest entry in the series is decidedly an action RPG. Unlike previous installments, combat control is focused on just one character and the design team dropped the open world approach for something that's much more linear. Will these changes be embraced by the modern audience? More to the point, will Tom and Chris prefer the mandated hour here over the time they spent with Dragon Age II way back in episode 105? Oh hey, we were supposed to do something for the Viscount. Good thing that guy is still at the hanged man getting drunk and bragging about being an absolute shithead. Hawke gets some information out of the guy, a templar with the grand cleric's seal abducted the qunari and paid our drunkard to turn his head. We don't get the opportunity to speak with Grand Cleric Elthina, though, because Mother Petrice intercepts us to say that the grand cleric would never sanction such a thing but surely it's fine because she trusts her subordinates to do the right thing. If we press Petrice, then she will sacrifice her trusted bodyguard Ser Varnell and label him a fanatic. She gives us his location and arrives on our heels to disavow Varnell's actions and set Hawke up as the coming retribution. One dead templar later, the Viscount has a huge headache to deal with. Our dear friend Hubert is back with news on who has been raiding our shipments. He brings us a man from Lothering named Sabin. After some questioning and the appearance of a consultant from the coterie, Sabin reveals that there will be an ambush. We arrive too late to save our guards, but we can at least take out their attackers. Once the dust has settled, Lilley the coterie consultant points out that she knows one of the dead men and that he works for a man in the coterie named Brekker. She tells us to meet her in dark town to get an update, but when we arrive she is dead and the coterie are looking for someone to blame. After that we confront Brekker and everything is fine with the mines for now. Except for the spiders, the revenant, and the broken pickaxes of course. Contraband was announced back in 2021. Since then, we've seen just about nothing from the game. No messaging beats, no trailers, and even the Xbox executives didn't yap about this one! After four years of development, this collaboration between Xbox and Avalanche has come to a close. Adding it to the list of canceled Xbox titles, this one feels different to Dependable Cog and Choco Matty. Part of it is apathy, but it's also a new angle from the previous shutdowns where we really don't know much about what was lost. It's a valuable lesson in why Xbox shouldn't announce things early.
