During my recent conversation with Niko Stratis about her new book, The Dad Rock That Made Me a Woman, she described her affection for Jason Lytle's band Grandaddy, and I mentioned I'd interviewed Jason before. Well, this got me looking for that talk and here it is! This phoner between Jason and I took place on Tuesday December 4, 2012 at 11 AM ET and was focused on his solo album Dept. of Disappearance, and we covered other things too, including whether or not Grandaddy might ever make music or play shows again. As it happens, Grandaddy will be on tour soon!To hear this entire conversation, subscribe to Kreative Kontrol on Patreon at the $6 tier or higher (a reminder that an annual subscription includes a discount compared to a monthly one).Related episodes/links:Ep. #974: Niko StratisEp. #924: Lance Bangs and Bob Nastanovich on ‘Pavements'Ep. #803: The Replacements' ‘Tim: Let it Bleed Edition' with Bob Mehr, Jason Jones & Ed StasiumEp. #717: No AgeEp. #704: Sam Prekop and John McEntireEp. #694: David CrossSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/kreative-kontrol. We could not be more excited to be joined this week by Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker of Sleater-Kinney! We talk about Portland, including our memorable brunch with Carrie, fantastic dinner with Corin, indie rock tour with Corin's husband Lance Bangs and the current state of the food scene in the country's hippest city. Vanessa also bonds with Carrie over their shared love of "basic" fashions, we discuss record collecting on tour and why ordering clothes online is often disappointing. Finally we dig deep into the iconic '80s Juicy Fruit gum commercials which combined a catchy song, extreme sports and Olympic level athleticism into a deep desire to have some artificially flavored pineapple (or mango?) gum. Finally, we convince Carrie and Corin to play a round of CHANGE.DORK where we debate changing the name of cheesecake to cheese pie, making Harrison Ford the face of Hanukkah and if the legendary American Football house should have its emo legacy updated to include the time that Sleater-Kinney potentially played a half-pipe there a long time ago. Don't forget to check out Sleater-Kinney's brand new album "Little Rope," which comes out on January19th! You can pre-order the album HERE and check them out on tour this spring if you know what's good for you!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today's episode is about "The Elephant 6 Recording Co." (C.B. Stockfleth, 2023), about the titular record label's roster of wild outsider indie artists such as Neutral Milk Hotel, the Olivia Tremor Control, the Apples In Stereo, Elf Power, the Music Tapes, the Minders, the Gerbils, of Montreal, Beulah, Dressy Bessy, Great Lakes & more. Our Very Special Guest is the legendary Lance Bangs, whose credits are too long to list here, but he's worked with most of your favorite musical artists and all of your favorite Jackasses. The movie is a true audiovisual treat, and Lance was there at the time with these musicians (he was roommates with Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel) and provided much of the film and still photography seen in the movie. So he's the perfect person to shed light on the 90's underground music and art scene in Athens, GA and the making of the movie itself. Plus we discuss the origin of Jackass, his films about Pavement and Slint, and the long and tantalizing list of musicians who Lance has filmed over the years for documentaries we hope to see one day. The Elephant 6 Recording Co. is in US theaters August 25th, 2023 and on VOD September 1 (Amazon & Apple TV) from Greenwich Entertainment. In Canadian Theaters August 25th and VOD September 26th from levelFILM. While stepping outside of Death Cab for Cutie and The Postal Service - inarguably two of the most influential names that indie rock has birthed in the last two decades - lead singer/songwriter Ben Gibbard has acquired a stunningly diverse range of collaborators, from The Monkees to Chance the Rapper. For Episode 65 I finally got to talk to David Pajo. David was, of course, the incredibly influential guitar player in the band Slint,. David later went on to play with Will Oldham, The For Carnation, Tortoise, Stereolab, Royal Trux, King Kong, Bush League, Zwan, Peggy Honeywell, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and, most recently, Interpol. Despite his incredibly prolific musical career, he still struggled with depression. In the winter of 2015, he attempted to take his own life. As a survivor he has made it his mission to talk frankly and openly about his depression and how grateful he is that he survived. I am so happy that we had this conversation. We talked about how Slint's record 'Spiderland' absolutely spun out a generation of indie rock nerds like me, about our mutual friend Lance Bangs, about his life since his suicide attempt, and about espresso for maybe longer than anyone could possible care about.
James Westby on his offbeat & bittersweet documentary feature film "At The Video Store" starring Bill Hader, John Waters, Lance Bangs, Todd Haynes, Gus Van Sant & many others. I had such an insightful interview this past Tuesday with Neel Nanda. After I made him an atrocious unsweetened coconut milk latte, we got to chatting. In this interview we cover headlining and selling out, finding your niche audience, getting on TV without an agent, transitioning out of open mics and into shows, and MUCH MORE. This interview is jam packed with incredibly helpful content. Bio: Starting comedy in Atlanta, GA and now based in Los Angeles, Neel Nanda has performed all over the country with some of comedies’ biggest acts. Neel has most recently performed stand up on ABC's JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE & has acted and performed on COMEDY CENTRAL's ADAM DEVINE'S HOUSE PARTY. In 2018 he was a featured comedian on AMAZON PRIME’S INSIDE JOKE with Asif Ali. Neel has also made notable appearances on MTV and on IFC's GARKUNKEL AND OATES SHOW. Other networks where you can catch his stand up comedy include HULU's COMING TO THE STAGE, & several episodes of the series FLOPHOUSE for VICELAND directed by Lance Bangs. Neel recently featured at Bridgetown Comedy Festival in Portland, the Laughing Skull Festival in Atlanta and was the runner up for the Westside Stand Up Showdown (2015) in Los Angeles. Aside from just performing standup, he currently produces a few shows in LA including "Unnecessary Evil" at the Westside Comedy Theater, which was recently named one of LA Weekly’s top 10 stand up shows. You can catch Neel every week at his show on the Westside where he has shared the stage with comedians like Hannibal Buress, Demetri Martin, Laura Kightlinger, and even Yakov Smirnoff.
Bullseye is a show about the creative process. And how artists' lives affect the work they make: their loved ones, friends and family, too. But what about when two artists - two genuine creative geniuses - are married to each other? Corin Tucker, the singer and guitarist of Sleater-Kinney has been with her husband Lance Bangs for over two decades. Earlier this month, they joined Jesse to talk about how they mix music, movies and love... and how they spent this past Valentine's Day. They couldn't even get a table at the Cheesecake Factory! This interview was recorded on stage at Revolution Hall in Portland Oregon as part of the first annual Listen Up Festival.

In this special, bonus episode of The Turnaround, Jesse speaks to the legendary Dick Cavett, whose eponymous The Dick Cavett Show debuted nearly fifty years ago. Throughout his storied career, Cavett distinguished himself as the consummate interviewer, and has played host to the most interesting and compelling figures of his era--Salvador Dali, Jimi Hendrix, Betty Davis, Groucho Marx, Angela Davis, Katharine Hepburn and more. Cavett shares what it was like to interview a murderer, how he responded to an expletive-laden piece of hate mail he received and the difficult challenge of maintaining a conversation on camera while dealing with myriad distractions off camera. Before Cavett launched his show, he received a call from Jack Paar, who gave him this piece of advice: “Don’t do interviews...make it a conversation.” On Friday, January 12th, The San Francisco Sketchfest will pay tribute to Dick Cavett at the Marine’s Memorial Theater. John Hodgman, Lance Bangs and Dave Hill will join Cavett on stage to commemorate his show’s 50th anniversary. Tickets are still available. Be sure to visit CBS Decades to watch The Dick Cavett Show. Lance Bangs has been at the center of almost every major movement in the world of indie rock and comedy since the mid 1980s. He started out working with REM and directed influential videos for artists like Guided by voices and Pavement. Later he went on to work with Kanye West, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Odd Future, Arcade Fire and dozens of other musicians. In the comedy world, he played a vital role in the production and filming of Jackass and has recently directed comedy specials for Chelsea Peretti, Hannibal Burris and David Cross. In addition to his directorial work, Lance is an archivist of underground music. His early work in the 90's indie rock scene with bands like REM, Neutral Milk Hotel and the burgeoning Merge Records scene helped define an era of music and visuals that still flourish today.
