https://duderobe.com/ Please note: This interview was conducted on February 7th 2020, when the global outbreak of the coronavirus looked differently. Howie Busch is the creator of DudeRobe, a nationally-known loungewear set for men beloved by professional athletes and featured in an episode of ABC's Shark Tank. Howie is an attorney in addition to be an inventor and a former coach for inventRight. He is active within the inventor community, known for sharing his hard-won insights with the USPTO and to inventor groups. Stephen asks Howie how busy he is with DudeRobe and how demanding is the job of an entrepreneur. Howie says, "You better love it." He is continuously having one problem to solve after another, whether it's with samples or manufacturing or bad reviews on Amazon. Howie does his manufacturing in Pakistan. He is working on version 2.0 now. They discuss the benefits of working with different manufacturers, how Howie found his manufacturer, and how that intersected with his Kickstarter campaign. He says that manufacturing and fulfillment are two of the biggest issues entrepreneurs face with venturing. Howie currently has his product at his house because he's switching fulfillment centers! They define what fulfillment is. They discuss other problems and opportunities in selling online, like reviews and copycats. Bad reviews really hurt! They also talk about money. Can you do this on a shoestring? It depends on the product. The Internet has made testing much easier. No one wanting to make his invention has been part of his protection strategy! DudeRobe is on the more complex side. Nicely done Howie! https://duderobe.com/ Howie Busch is an entrepreneur, inventor, attorney, star on ABC's "Shark Tank," and former coach for inventRight. He is the creator of the DudeRobe, loungewear for men that's finally cool. Howie explains that he has never been a robe guy, but envied how comfortable his wife was when she got out of the shower. So, he began brainstorming a better alternative than your average robe for men. Towels were good. So were hoodies. Why not combine a towel with a hoodie? And that's how inspiration struck. "Drip swag, not sweat!" Join the robe-o-lution! Howie first began licensing his ideas for products, so starting his own business was a swerve. He explains that he loves the licensing business model and never wanted to do his own manufacturing, but he couldn't set this idea down. He knew licensing wouldn't work, because there wasn't much he could protect about this particular invention. So, he decided to do a Kickstarter first to help him test the market and determine if he should try to bring this product to market himself. Howie was only one week into his Kickstarter campaign when a producer from Shark Tank reached out to tell him she loved his product and wanted to feature it on the show. Stephen asks Howie what he would do differently with his Shark Tank pitch and whether it's even possible to prepare for a pitch like that. Howie shares awesome insight including how Shark Tank winnows down people to feature and how his pitch was crafted with the help of producers. Howie reveals that he expected Mark Cuban to like him and his product and that he barely had enough samples at the time of filming! Stephen and Howie go in deep on the art of the pitch, including how to prepare and the impact of the show. Bringing an invention to market? 123 | Howie Busch Shares How to Grow and Maximize Your Business Connections Do you have the right connections in your business? Howie Busch is an Inventor, Entrepreneur, Speaker and Attorney. The self-described World’s Least Handy Inventor has figured out how to get his products to market without being able to make a thing. Yet he has somehow managed to license more than 5 products, fund a successful Kickstarter campaign in just 2 days and appear on Shark Tank with his product, DudeRobe.  With DudeRobe, he re-designed & re-engineered the men's bathrobe into something guys today will actually want to wear. As a Coach & Consultant, he has helped a number of other inventors get their products to market. He has spoken at major universities & the US Patent & Trademark Office. What kind of networks have you built? Your network could be the difference between YES and NO!  When things go badly in business (and we know that they can!), it may be your connections that keep you from losing thousands of dollars.  How can you build this network of strong connections? If you’re scrolling through your LinkedIn, looking at potential connections, and thinking “oh, I could use their help,” then you’re networking all wrong! Making these connections isn’t about finding people who can help you: in fact, it’s about you helping others!  When you focus on creating connections and giving value to others, when the time eventually comes that you need your network, you’ll have a strong network that will be able to step up and say YES to you! This week’s guest on Success Unfiltered, Howie Busch, was about to launch his Kickstarter, and was told that he’d not be able to manufacture the DudeRobe at the costs agreed on - that NO could cost him six figures! Then, he leaned into his network, and found connections that kept his Kickstarter launch on track, and earned him an invitation onto Shark Tank! If you’re ready to get outside your comfort zone, make sure that you tune into this episode of Success Unfiltered! You’ll be inspired to stretch yourself beyond your imagination! Be sure to join us next week for our next new episode! Your Business Depends On Relationships. And You Can Start Building Them TODAY! Business is about mutually beneficial connections with REAL live people. But creating those relationships doesn’t have to be a scary ordeal! All you have to do is show up, be yourself, and connect with people in a genuine way. Listen more than you talk. Don’t rule out anyone for a potential conversation. And stay open to opportunities no matter where you are. Sound like a lot of work? It doesn’t have to be! My FREE guide, “3 Simple Steps To Building Relationships ANYWHERE” will show you how to come out of your shell, embrace new connections, and “get out there” without stressing yourself out! Grab it HERE! Here are a few key secrets we talked about in this episode: Michelle introduces Howie Busch. Howie shares about his business, and how he appeared on Shark Tank for the DudeRobe: a robe designed especially for dudes. Howie’s first encounter with rejection was when he was working with companies to do bathroom advertising. He was able to build connections, but after a while, most of the companies pulled out their advertising because they weren’t quite ready to work with Howie yet! Howie ended up making “the safe decision” and went to law school. You need to be able to notice and be aware of when you need to pivot in your business. “Other people are not judging your failure as harshly as you are.” ~ Howie Busch Howie didn’t want to license or manufacture anything when he started DudeRobe: but two weeks before his Kickstarter was supposed to go live, his manufacturer told him they couldn’t work with the prices he had been given. Howie reached out to his network, and was able to find help through his connections! His Kickstarter campaign was what earned Howie a spot on Shark Tank. You need to always have connections and resources available at your fingertips for when things go badly. When his manufacturer said NO, Howie had spent time networking with people to build connections that moved him forward! To build connections, make sure to be a giver, not a taker! Always be ready to make offers to others! Invest in younger entrepreneurs. Add value for others: create podcasts, share content. When a person asks for “a half hour of your time,” it’s ok to say NO!  If you want to connect with someone, engage with them and interact with their content: build the rapport and relationship with them before you ask them to give their time. Being on Shark Tank helped create so many additional connections for Howie!  Howie shares about his pitch on Shark Tank. “Don’t wait for the perfect time; there will never be a perfect time.” ~ Howie Busch If you wait for the perfect time, you will miss the opportunity. “The harder I work, the luckier I get.” ~ Howie Busch Howie shares what he would tell his younger self.
