Are you keeping score in your relationships with your spouse, kids, or friends? I welcome back our resident therapist expert, Dr. Jennifer Dragonette, for an eye-opening conversation about the ways our perspectives can shape every aspect of our relationships—at home and beyond. Dr. Jen introduces us to the idea of "positive vs. negative sentiment override." It's all about how we subconsciously gather evidence to support the story we're telling ourselves about our partner, our kids, or even our coworkers, and how that can tip our emotional balance, for better or worse. We dig in and make some interesting connections to my world of financial planning, comparing these emotional patterns to the affirmation bias investors often face. There are many parallels between managing money and managing emotions, particularly in breaking old habits, letting go of scorekeeping, and learning to see the positive in the people we care about. If you're a parent struggling with expectations, a partner trying to reconnect, or just someone looking for more balance, I think you'll find this episode both relatable and practical. Please enjoy my conversation with Dr. Jennifer Dragonette. Connect with Paul Contact Paul here or schedule a time to meet with Paul here. Children who speak freely at home but shut down in public aren't being stubborn. Their capacity is getting crushed by the demands of new people, new settings, and unpredictable routines. In this episode, we break down how to build capacity using the PRIDE approach—adapted specifically for reluctant speakers and children with selective mutism. You'll hear how to shift out of “thermostat mode” and into “mime mode,” using 10 minutes a day of pure responsiveness to lower pressure, increase connection, and support communication in high-stress seasons like the holidays. We walk through exactly how to use each part of PRIDE—objective encouragement, reflection, imitation, description, and enjoyment—without adding demands, without pushing speech, and without triggering shutdown. This is the blueprint for helping sensitive, cautious, or selectively mute children communicate more confidently when the world gets loud. In this episode, you'll learn: • How the Demands–Capacity Model explains shutdowns in public or group settings • Why holiday routines, unfamiliar people, and novel activities increase mutism • How to adapt each PRIDE element for reluctant speakers (no expansions, no recasts) • What 10 minutes of daily “mime time” does to build capacity fast • The specific social and communication behaviors that improve when capacity increases • How SLPs can coach families through this process during high-stress seasons If you work with children who freeze, whisper, avoid, or stop speaking outside the home, this episode gives you a concrete plan you can use immediately. What will you regret when your time is up? In this confronting and thought-provoking episode, I explore the five most common regrets people share as they approach the end of their lives—insights captured by palliative care nurse Bronnie Ware after years of supporting individuals in their final days. These reflections aren't hypothetical or abstract. They are raw truths gathered from real people who were able to reflect on their lives with total clarity. And what they revealed is both sobering and inspiring: most of us are not living in alignment with what truly matters. If you've ever felt like you're drifting through life, holding back from expressing your authentic self, or putting off joy and connection for “someday,” this conversation offers a powerful opportunity to reflect and recalibrate. It's a reminder that we each have a choice—every single day—to live fully, love boldly, and honor the deepest parts of ourselves. Let this be the moment that wakes you up to what's possible, before it's too late. In this updated episode of Food for Thought—Omega-3s: Skip the Fish, Boost Your Brain (and Get Enough!)—we talk about these incredibly important fatty acids that are vital for brain, heart, mood, eye, and overall health. You've probably heard recommendations to eat fish to get your omega-3 fats, but listen to understand exactly what these fats are—and why skipping the middle fish is beneficial. What's also essential is getting an amount of omega-3s that truly protects your brain, heart, and other organs. The best way to know if you're getting enough is to test. I share my own story—testing my Omega-3 Index (and my husband's), learning we were low, increasing our intake, and testing again. In the episode, I share the results with you and encourage you to test yourself! In this episode, we cover:* Why omega-rich plant foods (like flax seeds and walnuts) are great for many reasons but limited when it comes to converting ALA into EPA and DHA.* How and why to skip the fish and get your omega-3s where the fish get them (i.e. algae).* What the Omega-3 Index is—what it measures, how to test it (including at home), and why it's not on standard panels. (Find tests online, or get 15% off of Complement's tests. Use JOYFULVEGAN for your discount.* How I increased my Omega-3 Index by over 60%—and my husband's by 100%.* …and so much more!Tune in for the full story, and remember…Food for Thought is a listener-supported podcast, and your support as a paid subscriber helps me continue creating content that inspires compassion and action—for animals, people, and the planet.Related Episodes* Your Daily Supplement Guide: The Non-Negotiables and the Helpful Boosts* Are You Eating Enough Protein?
