On this episode of the Ante Up Poker Podcast, we saddle up and ride through a full recap of our Patreon H.O.R.S.E. tournament—yes, it was wild and yes, someone tried to razz their way to glory. We also check in on the WSOP kickoff, where the first bracelet has been claimed and the lines were... well, legendary. Hopefully that is cleared up by the new app. We shall see if it's the ace in the hole organizers were hoping for. Elliott steps in with rulings on not one but two hands involving bets out of turn. (kind-of). Then Patrick and I jump into a hand where we defend the big blind with J8 suited and try not to make a donkey out of ourselves. Finally, I wrap it all up with Joe's One Outer, and this week I'm talking about the importance—and the freedom—of being a beginner at the table. Don't be afraid to look new; it's how we all get better. Our Discord Channel - Join us here for Ante Up Talk and more. Click this link for the magazine. This is a quick link to the our Magazine. In the 893rd episode of the PokerNews Podcast, Chad Holloway, Mike Holtz, and Kyna England celebrate Jeff Madsen's 40th birthday before talking about two poker players who murdered their parents. Recently in Texas, Benjamin Frakes, 39, was taken into custody at Doghouse Poker Club in Cypress, a town 25 miles northwest of Downtown Houston. He was charged with capital murder for allegedly shooting his parents. The tragic situation was reminiscent of poker player Ernie Scherer, who was convicted in 2011 of killing his parents in an elaborate plot to collect an inheritance. It's a true crime story that's been featured on 48 Hours but often overlooked by the poker world, that is, until the crew takes a look back in history and shares details of the horrific crime. Chad then offers a behind-the-scenes look at Daniel Negreanu's 25K Fantasy Draft, including an interview with the man himself, before recapping recent tournament winners from the Triton Montenegro, including Jesse Lonis, Jason Koon, and Aleksa Pavicevic. Other stories covered include the return of the PokerStars Big Game and a preview of the Bar Poker Open coming to the Golden Nugget Las Vegas from June 8-13.

Last week, we recirculated one of my favorite episodes in the entire archive, our May 2022 lunch debate on risk, bias and decision-making with Nobel Prize Winner Danny Kahneman, World Series of Poker champion Annie Duke, legendary investment strategist Michael Maubaussin of Morgan Stanley's Counterpoint Global, and our own founding managing partner Josh Wolfe. In last week's episode, the group discussed the value of premortems, the possibility or impossibility of humans changing their minds and dissonance reduction. Now we turn to the second half of their conversation as they look at the illusions and amplifications of optimism, overconfidence, and whether hot hands exist in real life.

In the 891st episode of the PokerNews Podcast, Chad Holloway, Mike Holtz, and Kyna England talk about that viral knockout punch between two poker players at Red Rock in Las Vegas. See the video and learn what the Las Vegas Metro Police Department had to say when reached by PokerNews. Also, learn about a controversy from the EPT Monte Carlo final table in which Aleksandr Shevliakov, who won the tournament, allegedly shot an angle with six players remaining. It caused quite the stir on the live stream, but was it all as it seemed? Shevliakov took to social media to share his perspective, and let's just say it led to an interesting discussion between the crew. From there, it's recent tournament winners including Jesse Lonis, Maria Konnikova, and Valentin Vornicu; a preview of the WSOP+ App and Tournament of Champions; Allen Kessler living the life of a tournament floorman; and Chad's live reality game charity drive featuring a special "Burger of the Week" at Mark "P0ker H0" Kroon's Player's Bar in Madison, Wisconsin. In this episode, Gareth and Tricia tackle a timely listener question: What do most players get wrong when preparing for the World Series of Poker (WSOP)? If you're gearing up for the WSOP (or any major poker series) and want to avoid common pitfalls, this conversation is for you. They discuss:Why tying your self-worth to poker results is so dangerous: How linking your identity to wins and losses leads to emotional swings and burnout – and ways to keep your confidence steady regardless of outcomes. The power of consistent routines: How solid pre-game rituals, in-game reset techniques, and post-game reviews keep you focused and mentally sharp throughout a long series like the WSOP.Process orientation vs. outcome obsession: Why a process-focused mindset beats fixating on results (especially when around 85% of the field won't even cash), and how focusing on what you can control leads to better long-term performance. The danger of last-minute overhauls: Why the week before the WSOP is not the time to reinvent your entire game or make frantic strategic changes. Avoid the urge to “fix” your strategy due to a recent downswing – stick with what you've practiced and trust your preparation.Sleep, nutrition, and recovery as secret weapons: How neglecting basic self-care can sabotage your performance. Gareth and Tricia emphasize prioritizing quality sleep, good nutrition, and rest days, and explain why trying to play every event (or partying every night) on minimal rest often backfires.Smart bankroll management and scheduling: Planning out your WSOP events and budget ahead of time. Patreon.com/RememberTheGame I have been wanting to talk about poker video games for about 200 episodes now, and finally decided to spoil myself (thanks Flanders) and dedicate an episode of the show to the video game ports of the card game I love so much. It's too bad they kinda suck. I think you could fire up World Series of Poker today and be pretty underwhelmed. It's ugly, the career mode is pretty thin, and the AI is trash. But back in 2005 when I fell in love with poker and didn't have the bankroll to play at the casino, this was where I got my fix when I couldn't get a home game together. I have a soft, soft spot in my heart for not only the WSOP video games, but WPT and Stacked as well, and I get into all of them this week in a rare solo episode. And before I shuffle up and deal, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks if I've ever written any jokes about gaming for my comedy act? I address the barrage of Titanfall 2 DMs I've gotten lately. And is GTA 6 worth $100? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This week on the Ante Up Poker Podcast, we're back from the Ante Up Tour stop at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek with a full recap of the action—and the travel nightmare that followed. Elle and I discuss some recent WSOP rule changes as the summer series looms just two weeks away. Elliott weighs in on a sticky situation where a player says he's folding... probably. Was it an angle or just awkward phrasing? Patrick and I break down a Hand of the Week featuring KQ suited on the button, and I wrap up the show with a little rant on why poker is way more enjoyable without the headphones. Ever wondered what separates the ultra-wealthy from the rest of us? In this hilarious and sharply satirical episode of Gambling Mad, Norman Chad takes you on a wild ride through the absurdities of modern wealth and betting culture. From Bernard Arnault's luxury empire to Elon Musk's $349 billion fortune—complete with “Elonomaniac” antics—Norman skewers the richest with biting wit. He dives into Shaquille O'Neal's empire of Five Guys and fitness centers, waxes poetic about Randy's Donuts, and spotlights the compulsive madness of gambling in his “Degen's Gonna Degen” segment, featuring Iowa State's betting scandal and a Carnival Cruise brawl gone awry. Poker fans get a goldmine in Norman's 13-point survival guide to the World Series of Poker, with timeless tips like “bring cash” and “don't talk to me in the bathroom.” Topping it off are his hot takes on why NBA playoffs beat March Madness and how soccer's injury time drives gamblers crazy. If you love comedy, cards, and commentary on money's wild grip on our lives, don't miss this episode—and subscribe for more sardonic brilliance.Support the showGambling Mad with Norman Chad is written by Norman Chad and ghost written by...Norman Chad. In the 890th episode of the PokerNews Podcast, Chad Holloway, Mike Holtz, and Kyna England talk about admitted poker cheat Ali Imsirovic being DQ'ed mid-tournament from an event in Florida. Was it the right thing to do? It was a highly debated development, and the crew dove headfirst into the drama by discussing a poker black list, what bestbet Jacksonville could've done differently, and if poker pariahs could even be welcomed back to the game. They then give an update on Tom Dwan, whose recent social media posts really concerned the poker community, and then Connor Richards headed to PokerGO Studio to chat with the controversial Haliey “Hawk Tuah Girl” Welch and others at the Celebrity Poker Tour (CPT) Game Night VI. From there, it's highlights from the Hustler Casino Live (HCL) Million Dollar Game III, such as old-school player Erick Lindgren satelliting his way in, Texas Mike's wild ride, and an interview with Steve! Oh, and we'd be remiss if we didn't talk about that epic hand between Alan Keating and Peter. Mike then talks about making a final table at the Venetian and playing with Batman at a recent Charity Series of Poker (CSOP) event, Brad Gafford and John Juanda both won tournaments, and poker media veteran Paul Oresteen talks about his new Substack, which you can subscribe to here. Finally, PokerStars North America has introduced a dozen new "Throwables" and the PokerNews Podcast crew not only shares their favorites, but they also offer fans of the show an opportunity to win some just by either listening to or watching the podcast. Life Outside Poker is a podcast for PokerNews hosted by Connor Richards that seeks to pull back the curtain on poker players and allow viewers and listeners to get to know them on a personal level. In the 27th episode, Connor talks with World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet winner and venture capitalist David Daneshgar, who used poker winnings to launch a successful start-up that raised tens of millions. The Californian with $2.5 million in Hendon Mob earnings talks about his companies BloomNation and Whippy AI, teaching a college poker class, quitting his finance job to play poker, and getting Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss to write his letter of recommendation to business school. Daneshgar also spoke about getting cheated in private LA games, AI in poker, and why entrepreneurs should play in poker games. This interview was filmed in March in the new Venetian Poker Studio at Venetian Las Vegas. The Life Outside Poker podcast is available on major streaming platforms including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, SoundCloud and iHeartRadio. In the 889th episode of the PokerNews Podcast, Chad Holloway, Mike Holtz, and [Kyna England talk about the recent drama involving, you guessed it, Maurice Hawkins and Denise Pratt. The latter claims to be owed $11,200 after backing the former, and things boiled over when she confronted him at the payout desk at the WSOP Circuit Horseshoe Tunica stop. What's more, the crew reacts to an interview Hawkins gave on his own podcast, him agreeing to come on the PokerNews Podcast before not responding, and then goes one-on-one with Denise Pratt to hear her side of the story. Mike then shares his experience as the last guest on the final episode of the Only Friends Podcast (they were kind enough to gift a piece of their set to the PokerNews Podcast set), Kyna joins Team Hotdog at the LIPS Spring Festival, and Chad headed up to the NFL Draft in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Oh, and Connor was busy at PokerGO Studio interviewing Jennifer Tilly, Mike Matusow, and comedian Ray Romano during the One Step Closer Foundation's "All in for CP" charity event. Other stories include Pennsylvania online poker joining the MSIGA merged player pool, Mori Eskandani interviewing PA Governor Josh Shapiro, and Robbie Strazynski & others voicing concern over YouTube's algorithm crackdown on poker content. This is a big week for us, since we officially re-launched the newsletter on our gorgeous new web address Riskgaming.com, which we are now hosting on Substack. You'll find all of our archives there, as well as much easier tools to manage your subscription to our Dispatches, Event Announcements, our edited Interviews and after almost a decade, Lux Recommends. We've had thousands of new people subscribe and follow us over the past two years, and so I figured this re-launch week was also an opportune time to recirculate one of my absolute favorite episodes of the podcast from three years ago in May 2022. Daniel Kahneman, alongside his long-time research partner Amos Tversky, pioneered the field now broadly known as decision science, exploring the economics, incentives, tradeoffs and psychologies of humans making judgments in moments of uncertainty. Tversky would pass away in 1996, and Kahneman would win the 2002 Nobel Prize in Economics for much of the work they partnered together on.In the months after our recording, Kahneman made an extraordinary decision under uncertainty of his own. Concerned about his future risk for dementia, he decided to travel to Switzerland at the age of 90 to pass away through assisted suicide. It was an astonishing final decision by the master of decision-making, and he conducted his final act in secrecy before it was revealed in The Wall Street Journal in a column by Jason Zweig last month.I had the opportunity to host Kahneman alongside World Series of Poker champion Annie Duke, legendary investment strategist Michael Maubaussin of Morgan Stanley's Counterpoint Global and our own founding managing partner Josh Wolfe for a lunch debate on the current research and trends underpinning risk, bias and decision-making. We merged our four part original series down to two parts. This week, we cover the ideas of pre-mortem as well as dissonance reduction and what circumstances lead people to changing their minds at all.
In the 888th episode of the PokerNews Podcast, Chad Holloway, Mike Holtz, and Kyna England talk about a WSOP gold bracelet while out on bail, who recently pleaded guilty to intent to commit murder against his wife. It's a sad tale, but the victim is now openly sharing her tale of survival and the horrific aftermath. The crew then talks about Maurice Hawkins, who has yet to address the $100K+ judgment against him despite racking up wins and big paydays, and offers a behind-the-scenes look at the new poker room slated to open next month at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas. Other stories include the second-largest Bad Beat Jackpot in history being hit, recent tournament winners including Christian Harder and from the Irish Poker Open, and another edition of New Vlogs on the Block featuring JW Wilder's Parody Poker. Finally, given it's the 888th episode of the show, it only made sense to celebrate 888poker. As such, Chad sat down with 888poker Ambassador Nick Eastwood, who has established himself as one of the industry's premier content producers.
