What Are You Good At: Jon Dwoskin and Jeff Gunsberg Talk with Owen Garrity

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 8, 2026 27:54

Jon and Jeff talk with Owen Garitty, founder and CEO of FPW Media, about how his early start in analog photography helped shape his unique approach to business and marketing. Owen shares lessons on trusting your instincts, challenging conventional wisdom, and why thoughtful storytelling is becoming more important than ever in a crowded digital world. Key Takeaways: Trust your gut and make decisions based on the best information you have, not consensus or outside noise. Don't be afraid to take a different path. Success often comes from doing what others think won't work. Give yourself space to think. Slowing down can lead to better ideas and fewer reactive decisions. In a world full of content, emotional storytelling is what makes a brand stand out. Authentic, tangible experiences still matter. Sometimes analog methods like printed materials can have a bigger impact than digital. Owen Garitty founded FPW Media in 2013 for a reason–to dismantle the extrinsic nature of a traditional marketing agency and forge a path for an innovative, fresh, and transformative creative vision. Today, that vision remains with FPW's three connective divisions: brand, films, and merchandise, which design and implement client services entirely in-house, effectively cutting out the potential for misinterpretation of any client's message or goals. FPW was founded as an "unagency"–a concept pioneered by Garitty that prioritizes a client-first outlook, meaning clients' visions come to life organically through unconventional but efficacious processes. Garitty has had an aptitude for photography since the age of ten when he got his first camera–a Pentax 35mm–and has since amassed over 15 years of photographic experience. He won his first photography award at thirteen, began working professionally at fifteen, and went on to pursue a career in visual storytelling that grew to encompass design, marketing, and creative direction. In a lifelong pursuit of creating compelling visual narratives, Garitty's passion lies in garnering brand recognition for his clients with impactful visuals and stimulating design. His profound understanding of the millennial zeitgeist makes him an invaluable asset in a new media landscape. Today, Garitty oversees brand vision and implementation for privately and publicly traded companies. He cultivates ongoing partnerships with a host of companies, ranging in specialty from large-scale manufacturers to apparel, agriculture, and heavy industrial equipment. He remains present and hands-on: clients have his personal cell phone number and can trust that Garitty is carefully guiding the creative direction of their project. In 2018, Garitty directed the award-winning and critically acclaimed film, Lionhearted, which elevates veterans' combat stories. The film focuses on the post-war lives of veterans, emphasizing the need for a sustained platform through which they can relay their experiences. The film's moving visuals, made up of interviews juxtaposed with combat footage, highlight the profound and moving realities of many of our nation's heroes. Garitty's passion for vivid visual storytelling continues to emanate from the page, screen, or billboard–venturing beyond the ordinary and garnering clients the recognition they want by involving viewers in the narrative. As someone who values place and community, Garitty ensures that FPW is regularly involved in projects with local organizations such as nonprofits, government agencies, and educational institutions. When he isn't at the office, Garitty can be found boxing, enjoying craft coffee, or gardening organic fruits and vegetables. Friday Field Notes: Patterns I'm Seeing with Clients

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 6, 2026 3:29

Here's what I'm hearing in the field this week—real conversations, real patterns. 1 – Conferences don't end when the conference endsThe most important part of working a conference is actually after the conference. Most people do the "meeting before the meeting" well—setting up conversations ahead of time. Where 90–95% fall short is post-conference follow-up. Your follow-up plan should: -Be intentional -Start on day one of planning -Have a 6–12 month shelf life If the follow-up isn't tight, the conference ROI disappears fast. 2 – Your value shows up in the questions you askI keep seeing this: As someone's sense of value goes up, the quality of their questions improves. Simple. Direct. Curious. Too many people: -Take orders instead of guiding -Avoid asking deeper questions -Stay on the surface to feel "safe" But the real work happens below the surface. Better questions → better listening → clearer understanding of client pain. If someone is in the room with you, they already see your value. Step into it. 3 – Clarity removes friction—every timeHere's a simple rule I give clients: When managing people → they should always know what to do now and what to do next When working with clients → they should always know what you're doing now and what's coming next Over communicate. Confusion is optional. 4 – Knowledge isn't enough—translation is everythingYes, stay up-to-date with: -Podcasts -Articles -Real-time data -Industry signals But the biggest gap I see is here: Not explaining what it means to the client. They don't care how much you know. They care about: -What this means for them -How they should execute differently now -Translate. Simplify. Target it to their world"

Action: -Make a master list of everyone you haven't connected with in the last 3, 6, 12, or 24 months — Pick up the phone and call them in January. 2- Planning is happening. Execution is pausing. January is already here. Waiting for the "right time" to ask for meetings or business slows momentum. Plan — yes. But leadership shows up in execution. 3- Social media is a multiplier, not a nice-to-have Your clients are on these platforms. If you're posting occasionally, generically, or waiting to be perfect — you're being forgotten. Be consistent. Be visible. Be you. Comment. Engage. Share perspective. Top of mind wins. 4- Don't run from AI — run toward it You don't need hours a day. Start with 1–5 minutes daily learning how to use it to think, write, and lead better.

The secret sauce to growing your business is productivity. The more productive you are, the more consistent your follow-up, and the faster your pipeline grows. That's where AI — especially ChatGPT — can help. ✅ 1. Ask it to write a 3-email follow-up sequence for your leads. ✅ 2. After every call, have it summarize your notes and action items with deadlines. ✅ 3. When following up with value, have it summarize an article into 2–3 insights your client would find useful. AI won't replace your authenticity — it amplifies it.

End of December or first week of January is prime time to make calls and meet people. Holiday check-in or strategy conversation for the new year. Attention spans are shrinking Follow-up needs to tighten. Quarterly or every-few-months cadence isn't cutting it anymore. I'm suggesting: Every 2 weeks Always bring value Pick up the phone (email + text alone isn't enough) The phone still works. Use it. Small, consistent actions are converting More meetings More face-to-face More conferences More networking Momentum is coming from showing up, not sitting back. Tools I'm using right now: -Brain.fm – daily focus + meditation 2 Favorite Books: -The AI-Driven Leader – smarter thinking and prompting with AI -The Power of Now – staying present in a distracted world Closing Thoughts: Everyone is distracted. More than ever. As you wrap up 2025 and step into 2026: -Have an annual plan -Reverse engineer it by quarter, month, week -But most importantly…HAVE A DAILY BUSINESS PLAN! At the end of each day: -Clean it up -Prep tomorrow -Define your one-day business plan -Identify your top 3 leading activities (in order) that actually move your buisness forward. Consistent action wins the game!
