Around 170 years ago, British archaeologist Sir Austin Henry Layard excavated much of Assyrian King Sennacherib's palace in ancient Nineveh. In the royal throne room, there stood a stunning 3-meter-high carving of a majestic city that was utterly unique in all of Sennacherib's reliefs. Atop the tallest tower in the city was one individual holding up a royal standard. Could this be a depiction of ancient Jerusalem and could the lone figure be Judah's King Hezekiah, of whom Sennacherib boasted that he besieged as a “bird in a cage.” Revealed: A 2,700-Year-Old Depiction of Jerusalem and King Hezekiah

This paper explores how The Archers uses animals to convey messages about farming practice, ethics, personality and community.Examples range from Mia's veganism and the disruption of the Ambridge Hunt, to Lilian's unruly Ruby, Peggy's demanding Hilda Ogden, Pip's herbal lays, Freddie's abattoir stint and the Rewilding project. The paper also considers how real-world issues such as the 2021 pig slaughter crisis and equine obesity are reflected in the programme, alongside the grief of losing beloved animals like Stella's dog Weaver or Bartleby the horse.Through these depictions, the paper invites listeners to recognise the role of nonhuman animal actors in shaping the village's stories and our understanding of Ambridge residents.About the speakersDr Tamzin Furtado and Tamsin Durston - The Tams of The Am - both work in animal welfare science with a focus on the intersection of human and animal wellbeing and are equally devoted to life in Ambridge. If you enjoy our work and would like to support Academic Archers, you can Buy Us a Coffee – buymeacoffee.com/academicarchers.

The “Hidden Christians” or Kakure Kirishitan went underground in the 17th century when the Tokugawa shogunate repressed Christianity from 1638 until the ban was lifted in 1873. In response, many Christian believers modified their spiritual practices to resemble Buddhist ones on a surface level, but which held hidden Christian meaning.Depictions of the Virgin Mary modeled on the Buddhist deity Kannon (Avalokiteśvara), goddess of mercy, were known as "Maria Kannon". The prayers were adapted to sound like Buddhist chants, yet retained many untranslated words from Latin, Portuguese, and Spanish. The Bible and other parts of the liturgy were passed down orally, because printed works could be confiscated by authorities.Approximately 30,000 secret Christians came out of hiding in 1873 after the Meiji Restoration. The Kakure Kirishitan became known as Mukashi Kirishitan or 'ancient Christians.' Some Kakure Kirishitan did not rejoin the Catholic Church and became known as the Hanare Kirishitan or 'separated Christians' and live on the Gotō Islands. Today, there are less than 100 Hidden Christians left on the island of Ikitsuki in Nagasaki, down from 10,000 in the 1940s.In this episode, Christine Leong interviewed me to explain what I discovered about these “Hidden Christians”.

Richard Scheib's A Viewing Guide to the Pandemic (Headpress, 2025) is a film book like no other. It opens with the author's first-hand account of the Covid-19 pandemic and life in lockdown. His sense of dread, and anxiety about his state of health, were experiences shared with millions of others across the world. For author Richard Scheib, already committed to writing a book about plagues and pandemics in popular culture, Covid-19 felt like a perverse twist of fate. Media depictions of deadly contagions had, to this point, been speculative and often off the mark; his book takes an in-depth look at what filmmakers imagined would happen and contrasts it with the reality. International in scope, A Viewing Guide to the Pandemic examines films in a wide variety of genres, from the silent era to the present day. Black Death, Ebola, Mad Cow Disease, Bird Flu -- it explores fictionalized accounts of plague and pestilence such as box-office hit Outbreak (1995), as well as documentary treatments of real-life incidents. Whether the threats depicted have a basis in reality -- the biowarfare of the Cold War era, for instance -- or are, like zombies and vampires, more fantastical, Scheib demonstrates how the fear of contagion has provided a wealth of inspiration for the big and small screen. In addition to his work on the pandemic, Scheib runs Moria Reviews where he posts reviews for horror, science fiction, and fantasy films.  Learn more about your ad choices. Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell share updates (1:19) about South Carolina's thrice-accused rapist Bowen Turner and his quest to get off the sex offender list, plus the latest in the (2:30) Christa Bauer case in Houston, where her husband, Lee Gilley, stands accused of murdering her and her unborn baby.  (3:34) Also on today's show, Mandy and Liz comb through Buster Murdaugh's amended defamation complaint against Warner Brothers and share their thoughts on Buster's arguments and the challenges he and his defendants might face.  (39:30) Plus, Myrtle Beach churchy business bro “Pastor” John-Paul Miller is at it again. The LUNASHARK Media team FOIA'd for a 911 call JP placed from his newest mid-scandal church on St. Patrick's Day. Turns out, JP — who stands accused of raping one child and sexually assaulting another — has some sort of homeschool operation happening in a rough-looking strip mall … or at least that's what he told police. Is JP running a quasi school?  Or was he just saying this in the hopes of once again getting his revenge against protesters, who were filming him from the public parking lot?  And finally, a quick update about Myrtle Beach Police Department's announcement that it reopened and reclosed the (36:22) Chris Skinner case.  Let's dive in...
