The second hour kicks off with retired Coastguardsman, Charter Captain and avid outdoorsman Joe Marion. Joe talks about staying safe in the outdoors, especially for late season open water hunters and anglers. We also discuss the dangers of becoming complacent on the ice. Ian Fitzgerald from MUCC is up next. Ian has an update on the status of proposed commercial fishing legislation.

Captain John Littlefield kicks off hour 2 this week. John is one of the instructor for Great Lakes Charter Trainingand he discusses the process of getting your captains license. Ian Fitzgerald from MUCC is up next. Ian describes why that group is recommending a “yes” vote on Proposal 1. We wrap up the hour with this week’s “Ask Avery” segment. This time I talk about the process of becoming an outdoor communicator and how easy it is with today’s technology.

Upper Peninsula angler and adventurer Benjamin Haight kicks off the second hour of the show. Benjamin owns Haights Wanderings guide service in Crystal Falls. He specializes in remote river trips for smallies, pike and muskies. Ian Fitzgerald from MUCC is up next. This time Ian talks about proposed legislation to license Michigan hunting and inland fishing guides.

In this hour we're talking with long time charter captain Ed Retherford of Trout Scout Charters.  Ed is one of the elder captains on the Great Lakes with 51 years on the water. Then, Ian Fitzgerald of MUCC talks about the big increase in turkey license sales this spring and takes a look at some proposed changes in the hunting regulations for the fall.

Hour two kicks off with Jim Felgenauer from the St. Clair Chapter of Sturgeon for Tomorrow. Jim says the fishing has been very good this fall and should continue to get better until the river freezes up. Ian Fitzgerald from MUCC is next. Ian talks about some proposed changes to the springtime turkey hunt, including allowing gun hunters to use tree stands and extending the season dates.

This week we are in for a treat. I like to call our guest the professor of rugby in our area. Ian Fitzgerald, fondly known as Fitz to pretty much everyone, is, like always, on the road coaching rugby. He joins us by phone in Guelph, where he is helping out with the Ontario program. But that isn’t why Fitz is on the podcast. Last week, Fitz and his Niagara Rugby Union Thunder U18 girls team arrived home from France, with gold medals around their necks. The Thunder, made up of young women from all over the NRU, including members of the Norfolk Harvesters, won the Paris World Games rugby 7s title. CLICK HERE to see the full Thunder results and game streams. SHOUT OUTS First shout out goes to last week’s guest Hayden Halstead. Hayden was back on his home track at Gopher Dunes over the weekend, and tore it up at the Rockstar Triple Crown MX Series. In the fourth stop on the series, Hayden earned his first top-10 finish of the season in the Pro 250 division. In the first moto he placed 11th, and finished the day with a ninth, to give him 10th overall on the day. Next up is a shout out to big weekend in local sports. If you’re looking for something to do, or watch, there is plenty, including the Norfolk RAM Rodeo at Timmerman’s Ranch which runs all weekend. On Sunday the Tour de Norfolk hits the roads, beginning in Delhi, while the North Shore Challenge open water swim event takes place in Turkey Point in the morning. Final shout out goes to Ohsweken Speedway. On Monday and Tuesday, the stars will race in the Northern Summer Nationals, featuring Tony Stewart, Christopher Bell, & Rico Abreu. Tuesday things wrap up with the Race of Champions.

To mark the 100th birthday of influential folklorist and musician Alan Lomax (1915-2002), who collected songs from musicians like Muddy Waters, Lead Belly, Aunt Molly Jackson and Woody Guthrie, Folk Alliance International joined the American Folklife Center to create the Lomax Challenge. Folk Alliance members chose collected by Lomax from the collections of the center and performed their versions on the Alan Lomax Centennial Stage at Folk Alliance's conference in Kansas City.
