In the summer of 2000, NASCAR faced one of its darkest periods. Just eight weeks after the loss of Adam Petty, the racing world was shattered again by the death of Kenny Irwin at the exact same track. In this episode of Firestorm: 2000-2001 -- The Years That Forever Changed NASCAR, we look back at the incredible talent, the intense pressure, and the tragic end of a driver who had been destined for greatness. Kenny Irwin Jr. was a force of nature in the open-wheel ranks. A USAC standout who went head-to-head with Tony Stewart, Irwin was fast-tracked to the Winston Cup Series, tasked with filling the legendary seat of the #28 at Robert Yates Racing. From his Rookie of the Year battle to his move to Sabco Racing, Irwin's career was defined by raw speed and high expectations. We explore the details of that fateful weekend at the track then known as New Hampshire International Speedway, the eerie similarities to Adam Petty's accident and the devastating impact it had on mentors like Johnny Vance and Bob East. This is the story of a rising star extinguished too soon and the wake-up call that eventually forced NASCAR history toward a safer future. In this episode, we cover: Kenny Irwin's dominance in USAC and his rivalry with Tony Stewart The pressure of replacing Ernie Irvan in the #28 Texaco Havoline Ford His transition to the #42 for Sabco Racing The tragic accident at Loudon and the "stuck throttle" discussion The emotional aftermath for the racing community Learn more about your ad choices. October kicks off with a bang. Rob, Corndog, and Bernie recap Dallas Kibbe's three-day run at Jefferson Speedway: a breakout Friday-night win away from home—perfect choose-cone calls, smart restarts—followed by the rough side of racing on Saturday with hard contact and a heavy hit that likely totaled the Legends car. The best news: Dallas is OK (no head issues). With the Las Vegas Asphalt Nationals just weeks away, the scramble is on to source a competitive car and make the trip. Bernie's news (presented by National Parts Depot) covers the industry and the track: Bosch trims auto-parts jobs, modern-car “features” that drive us nuts (blinding DRLs, multipurpose buttons), and Ida Zetterström's jaw-dropper .000 reaction time in Top Fuel versus Tony Stewart. There's also a Route 66 “Pavement Pounder” road trip—think keys-in-hand cruise to SEMA with badges and Semafest perks—plus Rob's cursed-but-fun weekend (bank card fraud, a cranky 944 speedo, and one life-changing smash burger). Rob tees up an Ask Rick crossover for The MuscleCar Place: Bob Lutz on EV inevitability and Rick Schmidt's response. Then it's a Dukes of Hazzard rewind—“State of the County”—where Daisy's new flame carries fireworks, Boss J.W. Hickman is played by Larry D. Mann (yes, Yukon Cornelius), and an Oak Ridge Boys cameo caps a leaf-strewn car-chase episode (call it 6–7 Corn Dogs). Sponsors: Holley has fall deals; NPD keeps the parts coming. Hit play for the full Dallas timeline, the Vegas plan, and all the laughs we didn't spoil. The post K&F Show #341: Dallas' Wild Jefferson Weekend, a Dukes Classic, and the Road to SEMA first appeared on The Muscle Car Place.
Buckle up for a deep dive into the automotive industry's latest battle with tariffs that could reshape how we buy and maintain our vehicles. Automakers and suppliers have formally urged the Trump administration to reconsider unpredictable tariff expansions, warning that these policies make investing in America increasingly difficult. The financial impact? A potential $4,600 price increase per vehicle within three years, according to the Center for Automotive Research—a sobering prospect when average new car prices already hover around $50,000.The conversation takes a personal turn as we explore the emotional versus practical considerations of keeping older vehicles. One host shares the dilemma of his daughter's beloved 2007 Ford Focus with 185,000 miles—is the sentimental value worth the maintenance costs and logistics of storing it for occasional use? This sparks a broader discussion about how consumers might adapt to rising costs, including a potential revival of salvaging parts from junkyards as repair expenses climb due to tariff-affected components. Our Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid review showcases why this three-row SUV deserves attention despite its $52,610 starting price. With actual adults fitting comfortably in the third row (thanks to its six-inch length increase over the standard Highlander), impressive fuel economy averaging 29.7 mpg over 475 miles, and what we call "the best-looking front fascia" in Toyota's lineup, it delivers substantial value for families needing space without sacrificing efficiency. We also cover the latest automotive recalls, auction results from Hemmings, and an update on Tony Stewart's remarkable recovery after a 300+ mph NHRA crash.Ready to join the conversation?
