We had the chance to catch up with Mike Wheeler. We talked about letting the songwriting process happen organically, the therapeutic aspect of songwriting, and music as an all-inlifestyle. We also visited a little bit about Bertha Grateful Drag that he plays with. Mike Wheeler is a singer-songwriter originally hailing from Vermont. With stintsin Montreal, New Zealand, Augusta, GA, Key West, Colorado, Wisconsin, and Kentucky-- where he was called "hands down, one of the finest WKY singer-songwriters going at the moment" (News4U, 2017)-- Wheeler now calls Nashville home. Mike's debut LP, Roll Another Dime, produced by Grammy-winning studio engineer, RobEaton, was released by Pacific Records in March of 2022. The record features appearances by Adam Chaffins, Todd Smallie, Rob Eaton Jr., and Sierra Ferrell. He is hoping to release 2 albums in 2025! In recent years, Mike has performed at Newport Folk Festival, CaveJam, & Sea Hear Now as a member of BERTHA: Grateful Drag, as well as Folk Alliance International, ROMP,Maverick Festival (UK), Dark Songs, Aiken Bluegrass Festival, The Frendly Gathering,IBMA: World of Bluegrass, Steelbridge Songfest, and countless clubs, pubs, living rooms, and dives, paving his grassroots DIY. Whilst enjoying the music and camaraderie of hundreds of musicians, Folk DJs, and concert presenters from around the world at Folk Alliance International in Montreal, I was virtually hosting this show, celebrating new releases from around the globe and local concert previews. What a wonderful world we live in. Such a shame to feel its very existence threatened once again by fascist bastards.

There is the classic movie or theater story line where the understudy of a lead role, or the staff employee at a company, gets the opportunity to assume the helm and shine. This episode's guest, Jennifer Roe, is a living/breathing example of that life changing opportunity. Over the years, Roe fulfilled many supporting roles at Folk Alliance International, an international arts non profit and NEA designated national arts service organization based in Kansas City, Missouri. She even served as Interim Director twice and when circumstances placed FAI in need, the governing body wisely, in my opinion, did the right thing and with Jennifer's concurrence, installed her officially as Executive Director. I've been a member Of FAI since 2010 or so. It is a community of artists, managers, agents, DJs, festivals, record labels, fans, and more… striving to keep the tradition of folk, roots and indigenous music thriving through preservation, presentation and promotion. The 37th Annual FAI conference with the theme “Illuminate” is scheduled for February 2025 in Montreal. Enjoy this conversation with Jennifer Roe, Executive Director of Folk Alliance International.

Brazilian, Cuban, Dominican and Mexican roots resonate, in combination with other musical aromas, in the first part of the program, to continue with reprocessed Italian airs, the root sounds of the Bashkir people, Iberian experiments and flamencos planting a flag in New York. We talk about the latter in our #Mundofonews, the Paco de Lucía Legacy Festival, which takes place in New York, as well as the concerts of the Folk Alliance International, also in the US, and FIAS, the International Festival of Sacred Art in Madrid. International Folk Music Awards 2017 Artist of the Year Ordinary Elephant captivates audiences with their emotionally powerful and vulnerable songs, letting the listener know that they are not alone in this world. The collaboration of husband and wife Pete and Crystal Damore, their connection, and their influences such as Gillian Welch and Guy Clark all meet on stage. Crystal and Pete set aside the work they've done previously as a veterinary cardiologist and a computer programmer, respectively. The two met at an open mic in College Station, Texas, in 2009 and soon moved to Houston together. With her on acoustic guitar/lead vocals and him on clawhammer banjo/harmony vocals, they threw all caution to the wind and hit the road in an RV. Ordinary Elephant's songwriting has won numerous awards and they regularly shine in showcases at Folk Alliance International conferences, music festivals, house concerts and workshops. Crystal and Pete recently made their way to Kansas City for what of course was a stellar and very moving performance at the Green Guitar Folk House Series in Lenexa, Kansas. I was able to grab a few moments with them on the radio as they were enroute to our fair city. Enjoy my conversation with the extra extraordinary…. Crystal and Pete Damore... Ordinary Elephant!

Welcome to Musicians Tip Jar where we talk about musicians and money. We believe music can let you experience life with a different kind of happiness. And it spreads happiness by sharing your music. I'm Chris Webb, joined by our co-host and happiness super-spreader, Dave Tamkin. Many people believe that happiness is a choice. What is your opinion? I like to think it's a series of choices that lead to a state of happiness and perhaps the biggest choice we get to make in the free world is what we do with our time. Our guest Chadzilla is a mint example of this and we discuss how to find places you are valued and how exploring our creativity effortlessly enables our income diversification.Quote:“If you have the trust and belief to stand up for yourself than the world will reward you” - ChadzillaFounded in 1979, Swallow Hill Music (SHM, Swallow Hill) is a Denver-based 501(c)(3) organization that strives to positively impact the quality of people's lives through music. SHM operates a music school and three performance venues at its Broadway & Yale location, and produces outreach activities and community events throughout the Denver metro region as an SCFD-funded Tier II organization with a $6 Million annual budget (2019).Swallow Hill is a nationally-revered hub for concerts, classes, and community, and is a recipient of both the Mayor's and the Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts, and an inductee of the Colorado Music Hall of Fame and Folk Alliance International's Business Lifetime Achievement awards. We often forget how powerful sharing creativity can be and how much it affects our audience and community. We feel the need to be creative but it is only by following that need into action and making choices to pursue the opportunities that feel right, that we reap the rewards of this feeling called happiness. Lets explore this further in the second half of our interview with drummer, vocalist, educator, studio owner/engineer/producer, and composer; Chadzilla.Chadzillamusic.comAction:Replace a non-creative activity in your day today and replace it with a creative activity (literally anything, not just music). We'll be playing brand new music from several KC area musicians and bands, and several of them have upcoming gigs.We kick off the show with a bumper from David Luther and then we hear part of a selection from a performance of the Northland Symphony Youth Orchestra & Sinfonia. Back on November 19, 2022 the student orchestra, along with Ralph Yarl took the stage at Kauffman Performing Arts Center. We were able to dig up a recording of them performing Por Una Cabeza from that night, and as the nation turns its eyes to the shooting of Ralph Yarl, we wanted to highlight him on the show as a Kansas City musician alongside so many other great Kansas City musicians. We hear from these acts with upcoming gigs:• Tre' Mutava at Folk Alliance International's office on Wed., April 19 along with Kat King and Sam Wells• Kemet Coleman this Friday for his album release show at The Ship• David Luther this Friday at Old Shawnee Pizza in Lenexa• Faith Maddox with their band Virga this Friday at The Bottleneck• Northland Symphony Youth Orchestra has their spring concert on April 30 at the Liberty Performing Arts Center (it'd be cool if this sold out)Dragon Inn 3 (stripped down set) on Thursday, May 4 at Blip RoastersMonta on Friday, May 26 at 8 PM at recordBarWe also hear from Rewound and Calvin Arsenia collaborating on a new song, OLIVIA FOX, riddz., Martay, Easy Match, Stretch, and Justus West - he just played two sets at Coachella this past weekend and his music was also featured on a recent episode of Bel-Air (created by Kansas City's own Morgan Cooper).
On February 3, 2023, I presented a four-hour edition of the Tasty Brew Music Radio Show, interviewing an array of local, national and international touring artists that were in Kansas City for the annual Folk Alliance International Conference. Last, but certainly not least for the show, was internationally reknown guitarist Pipo Romero. Although flamenco is not necessarily a genre of music heard on my radio show, when Pipo applied to play the Heartland Song Network Private Showcase Room and I had no room for him, I KNEW I had to get him on the radio so I could share his musical prowess with as many people as possible while we had him here in Kansas City. Romero is the new reality of the acoustic guitar in Spain, with a mixture of styles in which folk, flamenco or classical music merge, as well as Celtic or country touches that together crystallize into unique melodies with an innovative sound. From Cadiz, his music comes from music, influences and folklore from around the world. His unique approach to the instrument has made him one of the most respected acoustic guitar artists in the world. I would have loved to devote more time to Mr. Romero but I had to make way for the next program; although the language barrier proved to be a challenge the music was universally understood. It was an honor to be present as a witness and to share it with my listeners. Enjoy this musical interlude with the otherworldly Pipo Romero.
On February 3, 2023, I presented a four-hour edition of the Tasty Brew Music Radio Show, interviewing an array of local, national and international touring artists that were in Kansas City for the annual Folk Alliance International Conference. Next up is Patterson Barrett from Austin, Texas and Beth Bombara from St. Louis. Patterson first came to my attention about 8 years ago at the Folk Alliance Conference as the side man for Songwriter Stephanie Urbina Jones. As you'll hear, we've stayed in touch over the years and I learn something new about Patterson with each visit. During this conversation, he casually drops new information to me that at the age of 17 he played pedal steel, dobro and guitar on Jerry Jeff Walker's rendition of Guy Clark's L.A. Freeway for Walker's first release on MCA Records. He has helped anchor the Buddy Miller House Band during an Americanafest Awards Show at the Ryman Auditorium. I had the privilege of attending those Awards Show for a good number of years and the house band was always on fire! Not long after arriving in Austin, he formed the band Partners In Crime, which included Buddy and Julie Miller, sometimes referred to as Mr. and Mrs. Americana Music….releasing one album on their own label, Criminal Records. In the years since, Patterson produced some of Hal Ketchum's earliest demos, served in Al Kooper's back-up band, and performed before 10,000 festival-goers as Chuck Berry's pianist. He accompanied Nancy Griffith on Austin City Limits, legendary Austin singer Lou Ann Barton in music clubs around the country, and Buddy Miller on his Your Love And Other Lies CD, and more recently, on the Buddy & Jim CD. He has a continuing collaboration with Stephanie Urbina Jones as her accompanist, musical director and producer, including work with her Honky Tonk Mariachi project, appearing on the Grand Ole Opry multiple times. In addition to years of supporting other talented artists in every format imaginable, Barrett has maintained a career as a recording artist in his own right. Around 2015, I was introduced to Beth Bombara through a mutual musical friend, Sky Smeed. Although based in Missouri, Beth has spent much of her adulthood on the road, carving out her own award-winning mix of vintage folk and electric roots-rock. She's been a solo artist, a bandleader, and an occasional side musician for other artists. Her songs live in the same world as greats like Petty and Dylan; Gillian and Joni, and grow up like trees drawing nourishment from their roots music. But she never, ever sounds like the "typical" artist who claims these influences; Bombara to zig where someone else might zag, making harder or gentler turns, brushing up against jazz or taking rock toward its fulfillment.” - The Columbia Tribune It's been my pleasure to include Beth for the last three years now as part of the Heartland Song Network Private Showcase line up. Enjoy these conversations and performances with Patterson Barrett and Beth Bombara in Hour 3 of the Folk Alliance Takeover of the Tasty Brew Music Radio Show.
Music from many of the performers who impressed me at last week's Folk Alliance Conference in Kansas City - where I was given a prestigious Spirit of Folk Award. Artists from across Canada, as well as the USA, Eire, England, Sweden, and Australia. It's also Black History Month, so lots of music to celebrate that, too! A tip of the hat to prolific songwriter Burt Bacharach, who passed away this week at age 94, and a mini-feature on James Keelaghan, Canadian songwriter extraordinaire, who plays in town tonight.
In this episode of “The Journey of My Mother's Son” podcast, I sit down to talk with Sarah King. Sandy and I attended the Philadelphia Folk Festival back in August and one of the incredibly talented artists that we saw perform was Sarah King. After some exchanges through social media and email, I knew that she would be a great guest for the show. Our timing was great as she has two brand new songs releasing on the same day as this podcast. Sarah received the 2021 Songwriter of the Year award from the New England Music Awards (NEMA). According to the Burlington Free Press, “Sarah King inhabits the dark side of Americana, creating ‘high-powered blues-Americana-rock' anchored by her atmospheric voice and rhythmic blues guitar.” Her 2021 debut EP The Hour, produced by Simone Felice and David Baron (The Lumineers, Jade Bird), marks her stunning arrival with "Nightstand" named 2020's #1 Best Song in Vermont by County Tracks. King's live show crackles with energy and devil-may-care attitude, earning her support slots for Blues Traveler in 2022, The Steel Woods in 2021, an official showcase at Folk Alliance International in 2022, performances at the 2020, 2021, and 2022 Philadelphia Folk Festival, a performance at the 2022 CT Folk Festival, a night at legendary Caffe Lena in 2022, and a main stage slot at Black Bear Americana Fest 2021. We had the pleasure of interviewing Julian Taylor over Zoom video.Award-winning, Toronto-based singer-songwriter Julian Taylor is set to release his next album, the powerful and engaging Beyond the Reservoir, on October 14, 2022, via his Howling Turtle, Inc. label, with distribution via Warner Music/ADA. For more information please visit any of the links below or Taylor's website. Beyond the Reservoir's name is grounded in a specific geographical touchstone Taylor recalls from the days of his teenage youth in Toronto. “I used to hang out at a place called the St. Clair Reservoir,” he says. “If my last album, The Ridge, was a childhood record in a lot of ways, Beyond the Reservoir is an adolescence record – a coming-of-age story – about moving into adulthood. It addresses identity, loss, sadness, hope, and redemption, and the themes of resilience, courage, and strength. It has this infinite sadness to it, but it also has this infinite hope to it as well." In May, Taylor shared a performance video for one of the album's songs, “Murder 13” – that features a starkly restless narrative – in which he played it solo, onstage at the renowned El Mocambo club in Toronto. It was released to coincide with the 2022 Folk Alliance International conference in Kansas City. He then released the first official single from Beyond the Reservoir, “S.E.E.D.S,” a song with the thought-provoking key line – inspired by the murder of George Floyd and the widespread news of residential school abuses in Canada – “They tried to bury us, but they didn't know we were seeds.” The song premiered at PopMatters, and a planned music video will be released soon. The no-holds-barred reclamation declarations of “Stolen Lands” continues the theme, along with the freedom and wisdom celebrated in “I Am a Tree.” Moving forward, "Wide Awake,” a bittersweet beauty of a song, about embracing one's ingrained familial experiences, with the catchiest chorus that Taylor has yet written, will be released on Aug. 12, premiering at Glide magazine. “Opening the Sky,” written as a treatise for his pre-teen daughter to champion the idea of how you can do anything, no matter what the universe throws at you, will follow as single three, with a scheduled release date of Sept. 16. “Murder 13,” a touching account of the tragic loss of a dear friend of his youth, will then officially be released as a single in tandem with the album release on Oct. 14.We want to hear from you! Fellow Pynins is a contemporary folk duo from Portland, Oregon. Dani Aubert and Ian George sat down with us at the Folk Alliance International conference in Kansas City to discuss their beautiful new album, Lady Mondegreen. All the songs on the album are traditional songs that were learned person-to-person from various people they met while traveling with their two children through Europe/UK/Ireland. We hear some fascinating tales of how these songs were found, and about the threads that connect the traditional songs of centuries ago with current songwriting and creative processes.

I first became aware of Songwriter Terry Klein in 2018 when Radio Promoter Adam Dawson of Broken Jukebox Music sent me Terry's sophomore effort, “Tex”. I saw that Walt Wilkins produced the album and that's really all I needed to know to be intrigued enough to give it a full and complete listen. He has garnered high praise from two of my musical heroes, Mary Gauthier and Rodney Crowell as well as press and radio outlets across the United States and Europe. For his third album, Terry went to Nashville and worked with producer, multi-instrumentalist and award winning songwriter in his own right, Thomm Jutz. Good Luck, Take Care is described as a raw, visceral departure from the work he's done before. Ten dynamic songs that take hold from the first measure, knock you off balance, and won't let go without a fight. Adam contacted me in early 2022 to see if I might be of assistance in getting Terry a Kansas City gig because the postponement of Folk Alliance International's Music Conference here until May 2022 was going to leave a big whole in his touring schedule to promote “Good Luck, Take Care.” Terry was able to find a Kansas City gig and I was only too happy to have him on the Tasty Brew Music Radio Show the day before he was to appear in our town. Enjoy this on air conversation where we extoll the virtues of leading a lyrical life from Boston to Austin, collaborating with some of the best producers and songwriters in Americana/Roots Music and the importance of investing in your craft through co-writes and workshops.

On this week's episode of the Eight One Sixty, we wrap up our four-part series, Sound Minds. Back in March, Michelle Bacon conducted a survey about musicians dealing with mental health issues. Over 160 musicians did the survey and for the past four weeks, Bacon has been co-hosting the show and guiding a conversation about the survey findings. She's also offered up numerous options from organizations and places that provide affordable (and perhaps free) care for people in need. In addition to Bacon sharing her findings and data, we have also been playing music from musicians and sharing the story behind the song, dealing with mental health. This week on the show we'll hear from Kirsten Paludan, Molly Picture Club, Mac Lethal, and Phoebe Bridgers. We'll also be hearing music, and the story behind it from these musicians with upcoming gigs: Sam Wells, playing Thursday for Folk Alliance International's Finest Folk showcase at Lemonade Park, along with The Matchsellers and Lyal Strickland Teri Quinn of True Lions, playing Friday at The Black Box with Sam Wells and Blue False Indigo Nate Allen of Good Saint Nathanael, playing at recordBar on Saturday with Mr. Golden Sun, and Blue False Indigo Addie Sartino of The Greeting Committee, playing Loud & Local at E.H. Young Riverfront Park on Saturday, Aug. 7 along with Jake & The Dirty Magicians It's been an amazing month of shows and I feel like, now more than ever, so much of the knowledge that Bacon has shared, as well as guests, Dr. Erin Corriveau and Dr. Katie Jacobs needs to be heard and shared.
