The Record Store Day Podcast with Paul Myers

Grace Potter makes her Record Store Day Podcast debut to talk about her new album that is actually seventeen years old. In 2008, the Vermont-born, singer songwriter, and front person for Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, collaborated with the legendary T-Bone Burnett on a solo departure called Medicine, featuring Burnett and a crew of side players including Jim Keltner, Marc Ribot, Dennis Crouch, and Keefus Ciancia. It was a solid set and a bold personal statement but, at the time, Hollywood Records shelved the album indefinitely to concentrate on furthering her work with the Nocturnals. But now, it's finally seeing the light of day, and Grace graced us with the inside story on Medicine's long, long journey to the racks of your local independent record store. The Record Store Day Podcast is a weekly music chat show written, produced, engineered and hosted by Paul Myers, who also composed the theme music and selected interstitial music.  Executive Producers (for Record Store Day) Michael Kurtz and Carrie Colliton. Grace Potter was raised in rural Vermont by parents who were seeking a different way of life, one with an emphasis on the arts and a connection to the land. Thanks to her parents' extensive record collection, Grace grew up listening to a lot of soul and gospel by artists like the Staple Singers and Mahalia Jackson. You can still hear those influences in her music now, even as she's created her own distinctive bluesy sound. Often compared to Bonnie Raitt or Janis Joplin, Grace has a powerful voice and the stage presence to match. And now she has a new album called Medicine that's actually not new at all. It was produced with T Bone Burnett 17 years ago before her record label decided to shelve it in favor of a different direction. And even though it was recorded when she was just 24, it sounds as fresh and timely as if she cut it yesterday. Sid talks to Grace about the vision issues that shaped the way she sees the world, the impact of motherhood on her songwriting, and how she's preparing to sing the national anthem at the 2025 Kentucky Derby. It's been quite a stir for the Minnesota progressive folk-rock-country sextet Maygen & The Birdwatcher. In late 2021 they released their debut full-length album, Moonshine – (which Americana UK wrote is “stunning”) – earning them Midwest Country Music Awards for Album of the Year and Americana Artist of the Year) and landed opportunities to join festival stages with bands like Old Crow Medicine Show, Paul Cauthen, Grace Potter, and The Ozark Mountain Daredevils. They continued the momentum in late 2022, releasing Moonshine's companion EP, with the “lively and charming” (Adventures in Americana) Bootleggin' At The Flower Shoppe which took home a 2nd round of wins for Album of the Year and Americana Artist of the Year at the Midwest Country Music Organization's annual awards show. The mood-boosting Americana band adventurously blurs the sounds of country, bluegrass, folk, and blues. Lead singers Maygen Lacey, and Noah Neumann intentionally work to draw on their vastly different musical influences and vocal styles to bring a fresh and unexpected mix of songs to light. From beauty to grit, sadness to silliness, the common thread is that this crew loves music, and playing it together, and it shows.

The madness comes in for a landing with this, the tenth episode of Regarding Roger. Masters of Digression Chaz and Wolfie go all out in this drain-bamaged diversionary listen-through of the epic classic rock radio track Eclipse, the last track on Dark Side of the Moon. Redux follows suit, and thus we conclude the heavy lifting of season two, listening to Dark Side of The Moon Redux for the listener, so the listener doesn't have to. Join our hosts as they meander through Spotify rankings of Pink Floyd versus so many other artists we forget how many are covered. Chaz raves on and on about Live From Daryl's House, the internet show of Daryl Hall, and convinces Wolfie to get hooked in with Daryl and his friends like Smokey Robinson, Sammy Hagar, Allen Stone, Fitz and the Tantrums, Tommy Shaw, Rick Nielson, Kenny Loggins, CeeLo Greene, Darius Rucker, Train, Rob Thomas, Joe Walsh, Howard Jones, Chromeo, KT Tunstall, Ben Folds, Grace Potter, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Toots and the Maytals, Nick Lowe, the Bacon Brothers…and so many more. Wax nostalgic with Chaz about having Kyra Sedgwick walk across his blanket at a Bacon Brothers concert. Ah, the memories.  And yes, we get back to listening to the redux version of Eclipse. We wrap up this listen season with comparisons to season one, what Lulu had going for it that Dark Side of the Moon Redux did not. If there had been more coverage, better press, more content, and greater context shared by the artist would it have been better received? If Roger hadn't tried to sing, if he hadn't added poetry and voiceovers, would it still be something you can listen to? The main question persists…why Roger, why? When the hosts start pining for the improvisational stylings of Metallica and Lou Reed, you know it's about time to wrap it up. Rather, the guys draw it out, going further out on a Rocket to Uranus than they ever have before. New heights in digressionary diversion and pointless nonsense, this episode really captures the essence of our final adjudication of Dark Side of the Moon Redux. Hearing Eclipse delivered with a James Hetfield staccato is worth the price of admission alone. We wrap it up with a bow – here's the message: life ain't all dark. That's the big epiphany of this album – that and we've determined that the answer to life, the universe and everything really is 42. Thanks, Roger, here's your towel. Now…what would Daryl do? Roger – listen to Daryl, he is the king of Redux. Find out for yourself – tune in at Live From Daryl's House.

This week's guests, Johnny Hart and Kooks, from Johnny Hart and the Mess, celebrate the history of rock n roll while paving the way for a new era. With influences from across the board, the band has its roots soaked in rock, but wanders off the beaten bath and delves into various veins of music and sound. Most fittingly is the "Alt Rock" nomenclature because it is so broadly defined. At any given point, the band can sound like a pop band, a blues band, a country band, a jam band or a funk band.  Suppose it depends on the day, the night and the crowd. They have shared the stage with Fitz and the Tantrums, Shaed, Grace Potter, The Sheepdogs, Andy Frasco, Neal Francis, Joey Harkum and many more.

Eliot Lewis checks into the backyard of New York City with his new album called Anything Is Possible, featuring  Love Is Alive and What We Make It! A singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Eliot Lewis has toured the world over as a member of the Daryl Hall & John Oates band, as well as a former member of The Average White Band. Eliot has also been the only musician to appear on every episode of Daryl Hall's popular, "Live From Daryl's House” show all while keeping his own solo career going at a seemingly impossible pace. Over the course of his career he has worked with the music business' elite including, Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top), Joe Walsh, Sammy Hagar, Todd Rundgren,Train, Cheap Trick, Grace Potter,  Squeeze, Rob Thomas,  Jason Mraz, Darius Rucker, Gavin DeGraw and many, many others. Having mastered four instruments over the course of his career; guitar, keyboard, bass and drums, Eliot's shows will find him moving from one instrument to another. Equally at home in front of 100 or 15,000, Eliot has performed on the worlds most legendary stages, including Madison Square Garden, Japan's Budokan, Red Rocks, The Hollywood Bowl, Carnegie Hall as well as Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Conan O'Brien, The Today Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live and many others. Eliot has carved out his own distinctive musical brand and sonic landscape and has written, performed and produced ten solo releases. There are many who shaped Eliot's music and writing. As a guitar player, definitely Jeff Beck who I've been listening to all my life, as well as Billy Gibbons who I had the great fortune of working with recently, and Peter Frampton who I actually jammed with when I was 14 yrs old. I had the amazing experience of meeting and seeing many influential artists when I was a kid mainly at Madison Square Garden in New York City. For more on Eliot log ontohttps://eliotlewis.com

In this episode of “The Journey of My Mother's Son” podcast, Sandy and I talk about the last leg of our travels heading back east to Pennsylvania. All in all, this is a wrap-up of what turned out to be an over 6,000-mile trip that covered 16 states.  We had a great time and were able to see old friends and meet new ones, too. We were able to stay a few days in Rock Cut State Park again before we made our way into Monroe, Michigan for my last book signing of my summer and fall book tour. We drove from Michigan all the way to DuBois, Pennsylvania so that we could make up to the Elk Country Visitors Center at sunrise to see the Pennsylvania elk herd.  It was one of the most amazing things that we have ever witnessed. We worked in seeing Grace Potter in concert at Penns Peak in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania and then made our way to Tobyhanna State Park in the Poconos. I did another MammothMarch event in Hackettstown, New Jersey before we circled back to Berks County for almost the entire month of October. We hope you enjoyed traveling along with us virtually.

“You should reach out to Joni.” I'm reading a text from my step-mom and she is suggesting I contact a dear friend of hers because her focus on Musical Improv can take performances to the next level. I've met Joni and she's fantastic. The challenge is: I'm directing a big Improv show this Friday… and it's already Tuesday. So there's not much time to bring her in.  I'm thinking, “What if introducing music now ends up throwing off the performers or intimidating those who aren't so musically inclined?” I decided to go for it anyway. I invited Joni to our Tuesday evening class so she could be part of our rehearsal and get to know the players before Friday's show.  And I create a game set list that involves everyone–from those highly inclined in Musical Improv to those who have zero experience. I want them all to feel like musical superheroes. After the class is over, my phone starts blowing up with text messages from different students. Everyone loved the addition of Joni and her music. And she had a great time too! Experiences like this are just a reminder that it's good to mix things up sometimes. When you try new things and put yourself even a little out of your comfort zone, you open yourself up to a new story of possibility. And when it comes to music, my special guest Dan Kalisher knows a lot about mixing it up. In this episode of the Storytelling School Podcast, you'll learn how music can impact the story you're telling (whether in a performance or a Talk), as well as get answers to questions such as: Why does music transcend spoken language? And what's one reason why people can feel creatively stuck or like they've hit a roadblock? What you will learn in this episode: How the emotional side of storytelling in front of a live audience differs from that in a studio How location can influence you as a storytelling artist What key aspect can help you keep your creativity well-flowing Who is Dan? Dan Kalisher is a session guitar and pedal steel player, producer, and songwriter based in Los Angeles. He has played all over the world performing and recording with artists such as Noah Cyrus, Grace Potter, Louis Tomlinson, Fitz and the Tantrums, Bea Miller, AJ McClean, Don Felder, Matthew Morrison, JC Chasez, and Jesse McCartney. I recently met up with my friend and fellow songwriter Brian Seymour at the Blue Jay Restaurant at 29th and Girard in north Philadelphia, where we encountered a charming, cash-only gem of a restaurant (tax evasion anyone?), run by a kindly Greek couple, who clearly have a deep history there. From the vintage booths, to the timeworn handwritten menu hung clothesline-style behind the counter, the Blue Jay was a veritable time capsule, as charming as your great aunt's Hummel collection. Brian and I chatted about all kinds of topics - how times have changed since his days in the early 2000's singer-songwriter scene, when he would regularly play in coveted venues up and down the east coast (Berlin Under A in New York, Club Passim in Boston), fly out to LA to do shows and rub elbows with artists like Grace Potter, and become a mainstay at long-gone Philly venues like the Tin Angel and the North Star Bar (both places I knew and loved as well). Now in the post-pandemic world of 2023, Brian has a brilliant new record called "American Courage" and has jumped back into the fray with a killer collection of songs and a different outlook on his methods and motivations for sharing his considerable gifts.I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did!

Hello again everybody! For this latest installment of Vinyl Community Podcasts, host Rob of Northern Revolutions is joined by Concert Buddie (Chance) to discuss their shared affinity for the talented singer/songwriter Grace Potter. Both have been fans of her work for over a decade, and share similar paths to learning about her and following her musical journey since. Grace began her music career some time ago, most notably in the band bearing her name - Grace Potter and The Nocturnals - starting around 2005. This was the starting point for our hosts, with both discovering her music right around the same time in 2011. After several years and releases with the band, Grace forged a new direction with the release of her first solo work - "Midnight" - in 2015. A callback in several ways to artists of yesteryear, she evokes the fire of Janis Joplin, the showstopping stage chops of Tina Turner, incredible musicianship across multiple instruments, and the songwriting of some of the great rock writers of the modern era. On her latest release - "Mother Road" - we find her clearly in her own lane, with clear direction on her sound, her songs, and her music as she points her car forward into the distant horizon. What do the guys think of the new album? How do they feel about her penchant for releasing her work on vinyl?  And what album/songs would they recommend to someone new to her music? I want to give a special thanks to previous podcast guest Del Lyren for introducing me to our guest today, Vinnie Ciesielski. Vinnie is a longtime stalwart of the Nashville music scene. His playing can be heard on countless recordings, commercials, soundtracks, symphony concerts, and the list goes on and on.Vinnie is also founder of a group called Vinnie And the Hitmen, of whom you can hear some samples on his website. In this episode, Vinnie talked a good deal about his founding origins as a trumpeter, and has some poignant insights into the importance of pop music, even for those of us who maybe have a tendency to thumb our noses at it while salivating over the likes of Mahler and Strauss. You've got be able to put food on the table at the end of the day, and sometimes mastering the art of pop music is what is necessary if you expect to put some of that food on the table with your musical skills. Our time went by so fast, which meant as usual we were just warming up to each other by the time we had to part ways. So we went ahead and scheduled another recording session! This Part 1 is great in many respects, and Part 2 is great as well, and deeply personal. So I highly recommend you listen to that one as well. Wheels Off with Rhett Miller

Grammy-nominated multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and musician Grace Potter joins Rhett on this episode to talk about her latest release, Mother Road, and the journey that inspired the music. Grace tells Rhett about finding her voice at a young age, building characters and worlds around her songs, and why she's more driven now than she ever was. Back in summer 2021, Grace Potter took off on a solo cross-country road trip that would soon bring a life-saving reconnection with her most unbridled self. Heading out on Route 66 from her home in Topanga Canyon, the Vermont-born artist spent the coming weeks crashing in roadside motels and taking time each night to deliriously transcribe the song ideas she'd dreamed up behind the wheel, often scrawling those notes onto the backs of postcards and motel notepads. The result is Mother Road, an album that marks the start of a thrilling new era of Grace's career. Mother Road is available here. You love film just as much as you love music, so which career do you pursue? This is a difficult decision to make when you feel pulled in both directions. Well, who says you have to choose one or the other? Maybe you can combine your passions together and make something extra special. In today's episode, No Film School's GG Hawkins and Jason Hellerman speak with singer-songwriter, Grace Potter to discuss: Ending a film major in order to pursue a fast-moving, music career How being in a music studio is like doing post production for a film The difference of pacing in film versus music Writing a set list as if it were a mini movie Why watching other people hate your work is a good thing Collaborating with director Catherine Fordham Eating spaghetti for breakfast everyday Making Ridley Scott the best cup of coffee  Not being allowed to watch television growing up Writing alone versus collaborating with others Memorable Quotes “There's more permission and more patience with music fans than with film and tv, which is weird and unfair.” [7:54] “I don't think there is a time for ‘no.' There's no time for ‘no' when you're in an inventive space.” [15:24] “You find out so much more about yourself when you stop trying to cover up your intentions.” [21:56] “It's not about taking yourself and putting yourself into someone else's world. It's about finding where you fit, in a world that everyone's creating together.” [47:56] “No means yes.” [55:16] Resources: Song "Mother Road" Find No Film School everywhere: On the Web https://nofilmschool.com/ Facebook  https://www.facebook.com/nofilmschool Twitter  https://twitter.com/nofilmschool YouTube  https://www.youtube.com/user/nofilmschool Instagram https://www.instagram.com/nofilmschool Send us an email with questions or feedback: podcast@nofilmschool.com! On his second album released earlier this year, Love You Anyway, Grammy-nominated and Nashville-based R&B artist Devon Gilfillian sets today's political activism against a backdrop of stunning soul music that finds inspiration both from the past and the future. Having gained acclaim touring with a genre-spanning list of icons (from Mavis Staples to Michael McDonald), he recently told NPR that his music could be viewed as "a pill wrapped in peanut butter": Sneaking in a message, while calling everyone out to the dancefloor. Before hitting the road this month on separate tours with My Morning Jacket, Grace Potter and Trombone Shorty, Devon spends today discussing his obsession with Pharrell's production work, why his love for vinyl flourished in his teens, and his recent performance in support of the Tennessee Three, on the steps of the state capitol. We also learn how a conversation with Chaka Khan led to him recording Marvin Gaye's legendary album What's Going On front-to-back, for a special vinyl-only release. You can find Love You Anyway wherever you get music, and visit devongilfillion.com for tour dates, socials and more.
