Today on Speaking Out of Place we have a special episode on the war in Iran. Scholars and activists Persis Karim and Manijeh Moradian discuss both the Iranian national issues involved as well as the regional context, connecting this war with the genocide in Gaza and Israel's extensive wars elsewhere. At stake is both Iranian sovereignty and the calls for so-called “regime change.” We question the use of that term, delve into how the struggle for liberation in Iran rejects both the repressive Islamic state and the US/Israeli war machine. Our discussion draws the frightening parallels between Iran's stifling of dissent and imprisonment of political enemies and others with our own government's. Finally, we recall the Woman, Life, Freedom movement and build hope for international solidarity with groups working for liberation in Iran, Palestine, and elsewhere, and insist liberation will never be achieved by dropping bombs. Persis Karim teaches in the Department of Humanities and Comparative and World Literature at San Francisco State University. She was the creator and director of the Center for Iranian Diaspora Studies during its entire existence there. Since 1999, she has been actively working to expand the field of Iranian Diaspora Studies, beginning with the first anthology of Iranian writing she co-edited, A World Between: Poems, Short Stories and Essays by Iranian-Americans. She is the editor of two other anthologies of Iranian diaspora literature: Let Me Tell You Where I've Been: New Writing by Women of the Iranian Diaspora, and Tremors: New Fiction by Iranian-American Writers. Before coming to San Francisco State, she was a professor of English & Comparative Literature at San Jose State where she was the founder and director of the Persian Studies program, and coordinator of the Middle East Studies Minor. She has published numerous articles about Iranian diaspora literature and culture for academic publications including Iranian Studies, Comparative Studies of South Asian, African and Middle East Studies (CSSAMES), and MELUS: Multi-Ethnic Literatures of the United States. “The Dawn is Too Far: Stories of Iranian-American Life,” is her first film project (co-directed and co-produced with Soumyaa Behrens). She received her Master's in Middle East Studies and her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from UT Austin. She is also a poet.Manijeh Moradian is assistant professor of Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies at Barnard College, Columbia University. In recent years, near-death experience (NDE) researchers have dared to suggest that this "out-of-body," or dualistic, phenomenon is evidence that consciousness survives death, thereby validating the words of St. Paul that we have two bodies-physical and spiritual-the spirit body separating from the physical body at the time of physical death, or within minutes of it. This "spirit" body has also been referred to as an etheric body, astral body, vehicle of vitality, double, doppelganger, and mental body. Some mystics and psychics claim there are more than two bodies, the so-called "second death" which involves a transition from one spirit body to a higher spirit body. The spirit body is attached to the physical body by what the Bible calls a "silver cord."While the umbilical cord is severed at birth, the silver cord is severed at death. Those having NDEs have experienced a separation of the bodies, but not a severance of the silver cord. For many years, dedicated researchers concluded that the NDE was more than a hallucination, a drug-induced reaction, the illusions of oxygen-deprivation, or some evolutionary chemical effect not yet understood by science, but most of them stopped short of suggesting that anything spiritual was involved. Such an hypothesis would have been looked upon as a "religious" explanation, and conflicted with the advancement of science, which was not open to a dualistic explanation, believing it had already impeached religion. Dedicated researchers, however, eventually came to see it as an advancement of science even if it did support religion. While the NDE was given a name in 1975 by Dr. Raymond Moody, and was being studied at the same time by Dr. Elisabeth Kűbler-Ross, reports of the phenomenon existed here and there but had not been collected in a single reference until Moody's best-selling Life After Life. Section two of this four-part book offers a number of pre-Moody NDEs, two of them probably the most dynamic or profound NDEs ever reported. The author otherwise draws from his interviews with a number of experiencers and researchers, along with leading references, all supporting the dualistic nature of the NDE.BioA 1958 graduate of the School of Journalism (B.A. Public Relations) at San Jose State University, Michael Tymn has contributed more than 1,600 articles to some 40 newspapers, magazines, journals, and books over the past 60 years. In the pantheon of intellectual giants of modernconservatism, standing first among equals is the late professor Harry Jaffa. Jaffa, who influenced generations of students from his academic perch at Claremont Graduate University, might have been the 20th century's greatest scholar on the thought of Abraham Lincoln. Jaffa, who along with JWI Founder & Co-Director Hadley Arkes was a student of the great Leo Strauss, produced two seminal books on Lincoln. First, in 1958, he gave us Crisis of the House Divided, a close analysis of the Lincoln Douglas debates, andthen forty two years later, A New Birth of Freedom, which was devoted to the larger project of the causes of the Civil War, the Election of 1860, and the secession thereafter. A former student of Jaffa, and close confidant, Edward Erler, has now come forth with a new book Prophetic Statesmanshipfrom Encounter Books that Jaffa himself entrusted Erler to write as a follow-on to A New Birth of Freedom after Jaffa died about a decade ago. We are deeply pleased then to be joined by Prof. Erler for a wide ranging discussion of this important new work on Lincoln, with a relevance to theissues at the heart of our present way of life that is quite striking. Erler is Professor of Political Science emeritus fromCalifornia State University, San Bernardino, where he taught Political Philosophy and Constitutional Law, and served as Department Chairman from 1984-1991. He is the Author of numerous books and law reviews and professionaljournals, among the most recent, are “From Subjects to Citizens: the Social Contract Origins of American Citizenship”; “Marbury v. Madison and the Progressive Transformation of Judicial Power”;. He received a B.A. in Political Science from San Jose State University, on a grant from the G.I. Bill for services rendered, a M.A. and Ph.D. from the Claremont Graduate School. He has been a fellow at the National Humanities Center and served as Director of theBicentennial for the National Endowment for the Humanities.Purchase Prophetic StatesmanRead more of Prof. Erlier at The American Mind

Mike Sinyard dropped out of school at 16, toured Europe on a bike and became the Specialist no one knew they needed. Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not-so-secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom and pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is, well, it's us, but we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients. So here's one of those. [ECO Office Ad] Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast. I'm Dave Young, and that's Stephen Semple. We're talking about empires and business building and all of the things. And the subject that you whispered in my ear just as we started was Specialized mountain bikes. Mountain bikes is not my area of expertise. Specialized is a brand name or are we just talking about mountain bikes in general? Stephen Semple: No, Specialized is a brand name, but they do more than mountain bikes, but where they're really known is mountain bikes. Dave Young: I kind of thought that they were a- Stephen Semple: Yeah. Dave Young: Yeah, which is first of all, Specialized is a strange name for a brand. Stephen Semple: It is. Dave Young: Like calling yourself exclusive, okay. But I'm anxious to hear more. Like when you and I were kids, mountain bikes didn't exist. It just wasn't even a thing. Stephen Semple: They did not. No, they did not exist. Dave Young: There were bikes and there were road bikes, racing bikes, or you had a bike with just the usual kind of fat tires. Stephen Semple: Yes. And even before the mountain bike came along, you had a period of time there was the BMX bike actually predates the mountain bike. Dave Young: But more for kids and early teens. Stephen Semple: Yeah, exactly. So it was founded by Mike Sinyard in mid 1974 is when he started this business. So- Dave Young: It does go back a ways. Stephen Semple: Yes. And he didn't start right away building mountain bikes. That does give you an idea where the mountain bike trend happens. And today they have like 1,300 employees, they do half a billion in sales. And he started selling parts for bicycles. And it really wasn't until the mid 1980s that they became a big force in the mountain biking space. And the interesting thing that we're going to be talking about is they made some decisions along the way that almost put them out of business. Dave Young: Okay, love that kind of thing. Stephen Semple: That's the thing that really jumped out at me on their whole story. So Mike grew up in San Diego. His dad was a machinist in the Navy. His mom cleaned houses. They didn't have a lot of money. They didn't go out to eat, they didn't do all those sort of things. They were just a very basic household. He did poorly in school. He was in school in the '60s and had ADHD and really, again, not much known about that back in those days. And so he moved out of the house, dropped out of school at age of 16, and what he would start doing is he would go to flea markets and he would buy things, then resell them. And what he figured out was live cheap. So he had lived in a house with lots of roommates, was doing this living cheap thing, going to flea markets, buying stuff, reselling it, and eventually he decides to go back to school and give school another go. And he attended San Jose State University. And one of the things that happened is remedial programs started coming out and that's what allowed him to go back to school. And he basically did remedial everything. Like every class, every class was a remedial class, gets out of school, gets a job at an airport refueling planes, and he decides to become a pilot and started in an aviation program, got his pilot's license. Which,

On January 20th, Donald Trump issued an executive order entitled “Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government.” The order announced that “It is the policy of the United States to recognize two sexes, male and female. These sexes are not changeable and are grounded in fundamental and incontrovertible reality. Under my direction, the Executive Branch will enforce all sex-protective laws to promote this reality...” The enforcement of this executive order has rippled through the United States – and has included removing words and images from websites and papering over interpretive panels in museums. For example, material related to the Enola Gay -- a WWII Boeing B-29 Superfortress bomber, named after Enola Gay Tibbets, the mother of the pilot, Colonel Paul Tibbets – was removed because it contained the word “gay.” As a new joint statement from the American Historical Association and Organization of American Historians recounts, “Some alterations, such as those related to topics like the Tuskegee Airmen and the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, have been hurriedly reversed in response to public outcry. Others remain. The scrubbing of words and acronyms from the Stonewall National Monument webpage, for instance, distorts the site's history by denying the roles of transgender and queer people in movements for rights and liberation. This distortion of history renders the past unrecognizable to the people who lived it and useless to those who seek to learn from the past.” To discuss how – and why – the Trump administration is censoring and removing historical materials, my guest is Dr. Wendy L. Rouse, Professor of History at San Jose State University where she is the program coordinator for the History/Social Science Teacher Preparation Program. Her research focuses on the history of gender and sexuality in the Progressive Era – and her publication for the National Park Service was changed after the executive order. She is the author of books and articles, including Public Faces, Secret Lives: A Queer History of the Women's Suffrage Movement published by NYU Press in 2022. Susan's NBN conversation with Wendy about the book is here. Head coach of San Jose State men's basketball, Tim Miles joins Cofield & Company to recap the Spartans' 83-56 loss to Colorado State, detail the impressive performance of UNLV in the last stretch of the regular season, review which players should receive the player of the year in the Mountain West Conference, and share how he became one of the only coaches to be kicked out of an NCAA game. Las Vegas Review Journal sports columnist, Adam Hill joins Cofield & Co. to discuss Maxx Crosby's 3-year contract extension with the Las Vegas Raiders, review the Las Vegas Raiders signing of offensive lineman Alex Cappa, and give his thoughts on the reports that Shedeur Sanders was brash and arrogant during his team interviews at the NFL Combine.
Elizabeth Weiss's recent book, On the Warpath, chronicles her efforts to keep anthropology from falling prey to ideology, even as she curated a collection of ancient skeletons at San Jose State University. She and I had a chance to discuss her new book, and some of the ridiculous ways in which myth and superstition, and modern PC nonsense are intruding on the scientific study of humans and their ancestry. These included having a session the sex of skeletons being cancelled from a meeting of the American Anthropological Association because its leadership now insisted sex isn't binary, and the fact that the American Museum of Natural History warns visitors that certain artifacts have powerful supernatural characteristics. Many of her efforts have been to fight inappropriate repatriation of ancient bones to groups whose genetic relationship to these distant hominid ancestors is tenuous at best. It was this that caused her to lose her curations position at her University and eventually to retire from academia. It was a pleasure to talk common sense, and the importance of science for our understanding of the human condition with her. I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did. As always, an ad-free video version of this podcast is also available to paid Critical Mass subscribers.
