Foggo III, Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa (CNE-CNA) invited General David Petraeus, retired, as his guest. The discussion between the two men centered on both of their fathers’ involvements in World War II. Topics ranged from transatlantic passages in Nazi U-boat-infested waters to crawling through battlefields fighting for Europe’s survival. In addition, the two four-stars discussed the transatlantic bridge and the importance of the U.S. and its allies keeping the Atlantic free for commerce and mutual prosperity. They connected the past to the present by discussing Exercise Defender Europe 2020, an Army-led exercise that involves the largest deployment of U.S. troops from the continental U.S. to Europe. During this exercise, there is a significant maritime role in convoy escort operations.The podcast provided key insights to the multi-generational joint operations of the Army and Navy, and the Joint U.S. role within NATO.

Ships, planes and hundreds of Marines attacked a beachfront off the Baltic Sea this week, in an impressive show of force. This multinational, maritime excess is a U.S. led, NATO exercise held every year. BALTOPS 2015 has taken place across Poland, Sweden, Germany and throughout the Baltic Sea. The exercise is designed to enhance flexibility and interoperability, as well as demonstrate the resolve of allied and partner forces to defend the Baltic region. A total of 49 ships, 61 aircraft, one submarine from 17 NATO nations and partner nations are participating, including a combined landing force of 700 Swedish, Finnish, UK and US troops.
