The notorious Bermuda Triangle in the North Atlantic Ocean makes people, ships, and airplanes vanish into thin air. Some experts blame bad weather conditions. What they lack in majesty, though, they make up for in numbers: more than a thousand have been discovered on land, and many others have been found at the bottom of the ocean.One of the most recently discovered marine examples is the Borealis Mud Volcano. It's a quarter of a mile deep in the Barents Sea, an extension of the North Atlantic Ocean, between Finland and Greenland. It's a little more than 20 feet wide and about eight feet high. It's in a large field of craters and small cones. Like Borealis itself, many of the cones put out plumes of methane gas.Geologists discovered Borealis during a 2023 research cruise. They studied it in more detail a year later. They suggest that it formed about 18,000 years ago, at the end of the last ice age.During the ice age, what is now the ocean floor was covered by a giant slab of ice. As the ice melted and retreated, the pressure went down and the temperature went up. That allowed a big pocket of methane ice to begin vaporizing. The pressure blew a hole in the sediments above it. Today, the Borealis Mud Volcano continues to belch out methane, mud, and water from below the Barents Sea.

The European Space Agency plans to use satellite gravity data to track weakening ocean circulation systems. Rory Bingham of the University of Bristol explains how these satellites can ‘weigh' the Earth's water and might help resolve whether we're approaching the climate tipping point of a shutdown of ocean circulation in the Atlantic Ocean, something we've been following for a while. Scientists have been able to retrieve ancient proteins from fossilized tooth enamel in the Canadian High Arctic. Ryan Sinclair Paterson from the University of Copenhagen tells us how he can fill in the blanks of the molecular tree of life with these proteins from over 20 million years ago. Earth's warming climate has really heated up Atlantic hurricanes in recent years. Two recent studies, in fact, found that hurricane wind speeds were boosted by an average of 18 miles per hour. That was enough to kick most of the hurricanes to a higher category—including some that were juiced up to category five, the most powerful of all.As the atmosphere heats up, it warms the oceans. And heat is what powers hurricanes. So warmer oceans make hurricanes more intense.Scientists studied the impact of warmer oceans on the intensity of hurricanes in the North Atlantic Ocean from 2019 through '23. In a separate study, they looked at the 2024 season.The researchers used records of sea-surface temperatures, models of Earth's climate, and statistical analyses. They used those details to simulate what hurricanes might have been like without human-caused global warming. And they compared those results to the actual hurricanes.The results were astounding. The winds of 80 percent of hurricanes from 2019 through '23 were boosted by roughly one category. And all 11 hurricanes in 2024 were kicked up, by anywhere from nine to 28 miles per hour. That includes boosts to the top level for both category five hurricanes.Heavier winds cause more damage. They blow more stuff over, and they create a bigger storm surge. So as long as the oceans keep getting hotter, hurricanes might keep getting stronger.

That day, the huge cargo ship SS El Faro went missing in the area of the Bermuda Triangle. The search continued for weeks, and SS El Faro was finally spotted. It was positioned upright and in one piece at a depth of 15,000 ft in the Atlantic. The search party found no trace of the crew. Some researchers believe that ships and planes crash and disappear in the area due to methane gas. And it has indeed been proved that there are massive stores of this gas in some areas of the ocean floor. Therefore, when gas is released into the water, the process can sink ships and make planes crash. The wormholes theory is preferred by those who love sci-fi. In short, a wormhole is a space-time shortcut. While the existence of wormholes hasn't been proven yet, this doesn't stop some people from believing that this phenomenon is what causes vanishings in the Bermuda Triangle. Waterspouts (more simply, tornados at sea) are said to have been spotted in the Bermuda Triangle. This weather phenomenon sucks water many feet up into the air. Potentially, this can make a ship disappear with eerie ease. Compasses are reported to malfunction in the Bermuda Triangle. This place is one of the few on Earth where compasses have problems pointing north. This can lead to sailors and pilots going off their course. The human error theory sounds rather disappointing for those who love mysteries! However, some people are sure that all the crashes and disappearances in the Bermuda Triangle happen due to people's mistakes. There are too many confusing islands that are hard to distinguish from one another as well as the difficult weather condition. No mystery can exist without an explanation of alien interference. It's just too convenient to blame disappearances on extraterrestrial forces. Though why aliens would choose exactly this area for their abductions remains unknown. The most recent findings of scientists allow them to claim that the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle has finally been solved. The culprits are huge sea monsters! But when we say “monsters,” we do not mean living creatures. They are enormous rogue waves that were believed to be a myth. Rogue waves are terrifying and anomalous. When a hurricane or tropical storm rolls through, most birds fly around it, or find refuge in the calm “eye” at its center. But not the Desertas petrel. It can ride out the storm, then follow the system for days—all to catch an easy meal.The petrel nests on a tiny, craggy island off the northwestern coast of Africa. There are only a few hundred of the birds, which are about the size of a pigeon. They're strong fliers: every year they make a 7500-mile round-trip to the eastern North Atlantic Ocean.Researchers attached GPS devices to 33 petrels. They tracked the birds for several weeks a year for four years. And they compared the birds' movements to the paths of six hurricanes during those periods. And they got a surprise: About a third of the birds followed the storms—something that no other ocean-going birds have ever been seen to do. Some of the petrels stuck with the hurricanes for up to five days and 1500 miles.The reason appears to be food. The hurricanes churned up the ocean, bringing water packed with nutrients to the surface. And that probably attracted some of the petrels' favorite foods: squid and small fish and crustaceans.The birds normally have to wait for night for these creatures to rise to the surface. But during the storms, there should have been an abundant supply near the surface around the clock. And the smorgasbord could've continued for days—providing a good reason for Desertas petrels to tag along.

He was on the Florida Gulf Coast University campus last week to give a talk so we brought him by the studio to talk about hurricane meteorology and forecasting and how it's evolved over time and what lies ahead as technology advances.

It was the very beginning of the year 1912. A giant chunk of ice broke off a glacier in southwest Greenland. It was a huge thing - more than 1,700 ft long, it weighed around 75 million tons! Btw, out of 15,000 to 30,000 icebergs that drift away from Greenland's glaciers, only 1% ever makes it all the way to the Atlantic. That's why it's so amazing that in April that the iceberg that sank the Titanic was already more than 1,500 miles away from the Arctic Circle! Several days before our iceberg made it to the Atlantic Ocean, a magnificent ship left port. It was Titanic. Meanwhile, the iceberg was approaching the area the Titanic was going to cross on its way to New York. It happened on April, 14 when the ship was in the North Atlantic Ocean. At about 11.40 PM, people who were still awake on board the Titanic toppled down, pushed over by some mysterious and powerful force. We al know what was that. Everyone knows about this tragedy: how RMS Titanic sank in the early morning of 15 April 1912 in the North Atlantic Ocean. We watched the movie, we heard about it. However, many questions still remain without answers. One of them: did the unsinkable ship really hit an iceberg? Because there were survivors of the tragedy who had other versions. Conditions in the Arctic Ocean may be about to switch gears. That could mean that Arctic waters would become more like those in the North Atlantic—a process known as “atlantification.” As a result, sea ice would disappear a lot faster than it has in recent years.The rate of sea-ice loss peaked in 2007. The total amount of ice is still going down, but much more slowly than it was before. In December of 2023, in fact, the sea ice increased at a higher rate than in all but two other months in the past 45 years.A recent study said the slowdown in ice loss may be a result of the Arctic dipole—a pattern in the way air circulates over the far north. Today, there's high pressure over the Canadian arctic, and low pressure over Siberia.That pattern reduces the flow of warmer water from the North Atlantic Ocean into the Arctic Ocean. There's a thicker layer of colder, fresher water at the top of the Arctic. That keeps the ice from vanishing as fast as expected based on the higher air temperatures produced by our warming climate.Scientists looked at decades of observations made from ships, airplanes, and satellites. They found that the dipole might be about to flip over—from “positive” to “negative.” If that happens, the changing circulation in the atmosphere would allow more water to flow in from the Atlantic. That would warm the upper layers of the Arctic, causing sea ice to disappear much faster—boosting the “atlantification” of the Arctic.

REKO rings gained popularity during the pandemic as a way to keep selling direct to the public when markets were shut down. One of the obstacles to more widespread adoption of the REKO system- reliance on closed Facebook groups to communicate with customers- has been eliminated by Tyler Taggart and REKO Hub. They have developed software to facilitate REKO rings without using Facebook, plus the software is free for producers to use. Instead of charging producers, a small fee is charged to customers when they place an order through REKO Hub. In case you aren't already familiar with REKO rings, REKO took the farmers market model and moved the advertising and ordering to a closed Facebook group. Rings correspond to producers in a given geographic area, so during the pandemic, growers from a farmers market that was shut down might have started their own REKO ring to duplicate the farmers market, but in a prepaid format. Bonnie Monteleone is the Founder & Director of Science, Research, and Academic Partnerships of the Plastic Ocean Project (POP) whose mission is finding science-based solutions to the global plastic pollution crisis.  In 2019, she was working on a documentary about the North Atlantic Ocean. However,  its plot quickly went from one about a complex, impacted ecosystem into a "who done it," following the death of a newborn critically endangered North Atlantic Right Whale that washed ashore. Was it manmade noise that caused the mother to lose her newborn, a ship strike, chemical or plastic pollution, was it discarded fishing gear, or overfishing? Bonnie discusses her work with plastics pollution and how it relates to this new documentary project she is undertaking. The threats the ocean and its creatures are facing are vast, but Bonnie dives deep into viable solutions that everyone can support to preserve the sounds of the sea and the marine life in it. This film, which asks what the oceans would say if they could talk, promises to inspire hope, not doom, but only if we listen. ​​Bonnie's work has led her around the world collecting plastic marine samples including four of the five main ocean gyres and the Caribbean. She also works in the Environmental Studies Department at UNC Wilmington as an Adjunct Instructor teaching a Plastic Marine Debris Field Studies course and manages a lab working with student Directed Independent Studies (DIS) research. Highlights What happened to this baby Right Whale and what does that mean for the species as a whole?How can whales help mitigate climate change?If the oceans could talk, what would we learn?  What YOU Can Do Bonnie talks a lot about solutions her organization is implementing as well as what different industries can do. This week we talk with Hannah Rose Weber and Nate Lada, two of the owners at Green Things Farm Collective in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Green Things is a majority women-owned farm business that has evolved out of several businesses. Nate and his wife Jill first started Green Things farm in 2011 at a local farm incubator program. Then they purchased 64 acres where the farm is now settled. In 2020, Green Things joined with Ann Arbor Seed Company and the Land Loom to expand production, share management of running a diverse farm business and develop a model of sustainable, cooperative, and responsible farming. They offer seasonal vegetables and flowers to their local markets through various channels as well as beef. Hannah takes the lead on market, sales and personnel development. Nate leads vegetable production, infrastructure and production systems innovation. They are joined by a crew of dedicated farmers, including Jill Lada and Michelle Brosius who are also co-owners. Often on this podcast, we like to discuss people's personal farming journeys as much as the business side of the discussion, but in this case, it feels like the Green Things Farm Collective almost has a soul and spirit of its own that far transcends what the individual owners and farmers bring to it. On this week's pod we talk with Brian Campbell and Crystine Goldberg. They own Uprising Seeds, the Certified Organic, farm-based seed business in Bellingham, WA. Brian and Crystine started as fresh market growers in 2004, growing specialty produce for local restaurants, food coops, and farmers markets. During that time they also started one of the country's first food-stamp based CSA programs.  Brian and Crystine launched Uprising Seeds in 2007 as a small threefold catalog of primarily farm-grown seeds and eventually transitioned entirely to seeds as their market crop by 2011. Now in their 17th year, they maintain and sell a catalog of over 450 varieties of organic vegetable, flower, and herb seeds, growing on about 5 leased acres of cultivated space and working with a network of about a dozen additional seed growers around the Pacific Northwest. In 1912 Titanic departed on her first and last voyage from Southampton, sinking over 2 miles to the bottom of the dark North Atlantic Ocean, around 400 miles off the coast of Newfoundland. It has captured the imaginations of adults and children alike for over a century since the wreck was discovered- broken in two, but largely intact by explorer Bob Ballard in 1985. Since then, people from all over the world have been desperate to see the slowly degrading wreck on the ocean floor, some paying in the hundreds of thousands to make the trip down.Currently, the world watches as organisations and countries work together to try and locate a submersible carrying tourists that disappeared in the early hours of an expedition on Sunday.
