La moderna ciencia del clima depende mucho de conocer cómo era el clima del pasado, porque eso es lo que nos permite poner a punto los modelos climáticos. Lamentablemente no hace mucho tiempo que tenemos datos de calidad del clima a nivel global: en la mayor parte de países se empezaron a tomar en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. En el programa hemos contado más de una vez que existen registros naturales que permiten deducir la temperatura o la composición de la atmósfera del pasado: testigos de hielo, sedimentos, incluso la composición de ciertas rocas nos da información sobre todo ello. Estos registros naturales nos permiten remontarnos a un pasado remoto: millones, incluso miles de millones de años. A cambio, claro, siempre son más inciertos que una medida directa. De lo que hablamos mucho menos es del periodo intermedio: antes de tener datos de calidad, pero cuando ya existían los termómetros y los barómetros. Hay unos siglos, que coinciden más o menos con la Edad Moderna, en que los documentos históricos nos hablan de medidas de temperatura y de otras magnitudes que son útiles para entender el clima, pero estas medidas a menudo se han tomado de forma poco sistemática y los documentos omiten muchos de los detalles. Esta época también es útil para los científicos del clima, pero requieren de un especialista: alguien que entienda la física de las medidas, pero también el contexto cultural e histórico de los documentos. Hoy dedicamos un rato a hablar de este tipo de investigación, a medio camino entre la física y la historia, con José Manuel Vaquero, físico y profesor en la Universidad de Extremadura que se dedica precisamente a tratar de extraer todo el jugo a estos documentos. Nuestro invitado trabaja con un archivo excepcional: el del Real Observatorio de la Armada, en San Fernando (Cádiz), una institución que se fundó en 1752 precisamente para promover el conocimiento científico, y que guarda los documentos técnicos más antiguos de España. Jeremy has spent his career chasing the uncanny side of the English landscape, and in this book he has gathered hundreds of treasure legends together for the first time — organizing them not by region or date but by emotion: memory, ruin, strife, terror, failure, and longing. They are, as Jeremy Harte argues throughout, about the emotions that surround gold — longing, memory, failure, terror, and the fantasy of transformation. The stories survived because of what they did to the people who told and heard them, not because of any actual buried wealth. The Cuerdale Hoard — the largest Viking silver hoard ever found in Britain, unearthed by laborers straightening the River Ribble in the 1840s — is one of the most powerful examples of how real treasure finds retrospectively generate legends. Almost all treasure "traditions" that seem to predict a find are only recorded after the find is made. The classic Anglo-Saxon image of the dragon sitting on a barrow of gold — doing nothing but guarding it forever, sacrificing whatever life a dragon might have — is, Jeremy argues, an early cultural articulation of what happens when treasure takes over a human life. The same psychology drives Oak Island today. Treasure guardians shift with the centuries — dragons and giants give way to fairies, then to demons, then to ghosts — not randomly but in response to what each era finds believable. A legend must sit in the zone between "obviously true" and "obviously made up" to function: too real and it's history, too fantastic and it's a fairy tale. The dissolution of the monasteries did not immediately generate treasure legends. It took fifty to a hundred years for the trauma to work its way into folklore — appearing in ghost monks, ruined abbey atmosphere, and stories of gold thrown into ponds or bricked up in tunnels. Society, like individuals, needs time to process collective shock before it becomes story. Mary Parrish, a "brandy-loving London cunning woman," and Goodwin Wharton, the gullible aristocrat she led on a years-long quest for fairy gold — documented entirely from Wharton's own obsessive diary — are perhaps the most human pair in the book. Wharton was simultaneously a reasonably successful MP, raised money from syndicates, and organized diving bells off the Scottish coast for Armada treasure. Jeremy describes their relationship as "a con, but also a love story." The folk cruelty of treasure legends — the fortune always snatched away by one tiny mistake, a single word spoken, one black hair on a white ox — is not random. These stories circulated among communities who had not done well for themselves. The unkindness of fate felt true to their experience. The treasure was always just out of reach because that was always true. The real fantasy of treasure, Jeremy argues, is not wealth but escape — to become a gentleman, meaning someone visibly unencumbered by the need to work. The problem for many of the poor communities generating these legends was that even if they found a single coin, they could not spend it without someone asking where it came from. Less than 10% of records are digital — a parallel to archaeology, where the vast majority of objects are still in the ground. Metal detectorists and archaeologists have more in common than either entirely admits: both are animated by the same desire to find something and to validate themselves through the finding. The difference is in what they're willing to record and share. The book closes with the gardener at Wallingford who dug for buried treasure in his spare time until one day they found a fresh hole, his spade and gloves beside it, and the man himself was never seen again. Jeremy chose this image deliberately: "It was almost like, if I'd been giving a talk, it would have been time for me to wave bye-bye and disappear behind a curtain." Most of the hordes in the book will never be found because they were never there." — Jeremy on the central argument of the book. "You find an Iron Age gold coin and it was — if it had been anything else, it would have been archaeology. It was the gold that made that different emotive feeling. And I thought I ought to be exploring that a bit." — Jeremy on the moment in the dried-out lake that started it all. "Think about the Anglo-Saxon dragon. He does nothing but guard gold, and sacrifices whatever a dragon life would be to just sit there forever in the darkness on the treasure. I thought, yeah, there is a common theme here." — Jeremy on why Oak Island and the dragon barrow are the same story. "It has to be the kind of thing you can announce in the pub and there will be a lively discussion with people banging down their pints and going, well bits of it could be true. It has to sit in that zone — too real and it's just history, too fantastic and it's a fairy tale." — Jeremy on what makes a legend work. "Mary Parrish — we have an entirely one-sided record. Goodwin Wharton was the literary half of the partnership. He even organized diving bells to try to dig up the treasure of the Armada off the coast of Scotland. And at the same time he is a fairly successful MP making his way up in government. Leading me to wonder what secrets might possibly lie in the diaries of some of our present members." — Jeremy on the Mary Parrish and Goodwin Wharton story. "People telling stories about lost treasure — the poorer the community, the more likely they are to be doing it. There's a sense of the unkindness of fate. People who had mastered fate and done quite well for themselves were sitting in the other corner and not contacting the gentleman with the story." — Jeremy on why treasure legends cluster around poverty. "The dissolution of the monasteries is recorded historically, basically day by day. What happened to the stuff is pretty well recorded. But it's not until well into the seventeenth century that you get the tropes of the monastic ghost, the buried treasures, the ghost monks. It took fifty to a hundred years for the trauma to work its way into folklore." — Jeremy on how collective trauma becomes legend. "The fantasy is to become a gentleman. Gentlemen are conspicuously visible in the countryside as people who wander around having no apparent need to work at anything whatsoever. Which of course is why they can go around collecting folk tales." — Jeremy on the real dream underneath treasure hunting. "When I actually go on site, my skepticism rolls away after about five miles walking. And I'm like, ooh, let's just have a quick look underneath here. There's a patch of dirt here. Let's just check. Esta estatua rinde tributo a los Tercios españoles y a todos los soldados que partieron desde este puerto histórico a luchar a lo largo de los siglos, según Reverte. Por su parte, la alcaldesa Noelia Arroyo ha resaltado el valor cultural de la escultura, la cual fue instalada sobre piedras históricas cedidas por la Armada. El escritor, además, ha recitado versos clásicos de Quevedo y ha invitado a reflexionar sobre la dignidad de aquellos combatientes que, a pesar del olvido institucional, demostraron valentía y honor en tierras lejanas. Ha sido un acto popular, abierto a toda la ciudadanía. El monumento pasa así a formar parte del patrimonio urbano de la ciudad.

El diputado nacional por Entre Ríos, Guillermo Michel, reclamó información oficial sobre el presunto paso de un patrullero de la Armada británica por aguas bajo jurisdicción argentina y anunció nuevas acciones en el Congreso. Además, cuestionó la política económica del Gobierno nacional y sostuvo que el peronismo debe enfocarse en construir una alternativa basada en propuestas.

Lunes 13 de julio: El municipio decretó tres días de duelo comunal y hoy se realizará el control de detención del cabo de la Armada que, fuera de servicio y en un auto particular, como se preocupó de precisar la institución, atropelló a las víctimas en una feria en el sector de Gómez Carreño.

Casi ocho años después del hundimiento del submarino ARA San Juan, que dejó 44 tripulantes muertos, la justicia argentina dictó sentencia el miércoles 8 de julio sobre las causas del naufragio. El juicio dio una condena de tres años de prisión en suspenso para el excomandante de la Fuerza de Submarinos Claudio Villamide, mientras que otros ex altos mandos de la Armada fueron absueltos. La desaparición de la nave que zarpó el 13 de noviembre de 2017 desde Ushuaia, la ciudad más austral del mundo, hacia la base naval de Mar del Plata, en la provincia de Buenos Aires, es uno de los casos que más ha conmocionado al país en la última década. En 2026, las autoridades realizaron un juicio oral que duró poco más de cuatro meses para dictaminar quiénes eran los responsables del naufragio del submarino que fue localizado  un año después en el Golfo de San Jorge. Lo encontraron a unos 500 kilómetros de la costa patagónica y a más de 900 metros de profundidad. El fallo condenó a Claudio Villamide, excomandante de la Fuerza de Submarinos, a tres años de prisión en suspenso por dos delitos: estrago culposo agravado por la muerte de los 44 tripulantes e incumplimiento de los deberes públicos. Fueron absueltos el excomandante de Adiestramiento y Alistamiento Naval Luis Enrique López Mazzeo, el exjefe del Estado Mayor del Comando de la Fuerza de Submarinos Héctor Alonso y el exjefe del Departamento de Operaciones Hugo Miguel Correa. La sentencia no convence a los familiares porque es “bastante contradictoria”  para lo que se estipula en las acusaciones, dijo a RFI Luis Tagliapietra, abogado y padre de una de las víctimas. Según él, los tres años sin prisión efectiva es una condena “irrisoria” frente a los cargos que enfrentó Villamide: además de ser responsable de “estrago culposo, que vendría a ser el hundimiento”, y que sería “agravado por la muerte de 44 personas”, tenía la “responsabilidad extra de cuidar a sus subordinados y las normativas de la institución”, explicó. En espera de justicia Luís, como otros familiares, insiste en que la única manera de hacer justicia es saber qué pasó aquel día bajo las aguas del Atlántico, puesto que a día de hoy, todavía existen múltiples incógnitas sobre la causa del accidente durante la misión de patrullaje del ARA San Juan. En el primer año “todo fue muy intenso", recordó. “Especulamos con encontrarlos con vida. Después por lo menos encontrar los restos del submarino. Cuando al final encontramos el resto del submarino esperábamos, y después pedimos y después exigimos, que se haga lo que se hace en cualquier investigación: hacer las pericias técnicas necesarias para tratar de saber qué es lo que ocurrió”, pero no se hizo por lo que decidieron llevar el caso ante los tribunales. Las autoridades hablan de accidente, mientras que la fiscalía sostiene que se trata de una “tragedia previsible”, ante fallas críticas de mantenimiento.  A pesar de las condenas, el tribunal todavía no ha hecho públicos los fundamentos de la sentencia que se conocerán a finales de agosto y será entonces cuando las familias confían en encontrar respuestas que les acerquen, al menos un poco más, a la justicia que llevan años reclamando.

El juicio dio una condena de tres años de prisión en suspenso para el excomandante de la Fuerza de Submarinos Claudio Villamide, mientras que otros ex altos mandos de la Armada fueron absueltos. La desaparición de la nave que zarpó el 13 de noviembre de 2017 desde Ushuaia, la ciudad más austral del mundo, hacia la base naval de Mar del Plata, en la provincia de Buenos Aires, es uno de los casos que más ha conmocionado al país en la última década. En 2026, las autoridades realizaron un juicio oral que duró poco más de cuatro meses para dictaminar quiénes eran los responsables del naufragio del submarino que fue localizado  un año después en el Golfo de San Jorge. Lo encontraron a unos 500 kilómetros de la costa patagónica y a más de 900 metros de profundidad. El fallo condenó a Claudio Villamide, excomandante de la Fuerza de Submarinos, a tres años de prisión en suspenso por dos delitos: estrago culposo agravado por la muerte de los 44 tripulantes e incumplimiento de los deberes públicos. Fueron absueltos el excomandante de Adiestramiento y Alistamiento Naval Luis Enrique López Mazzeo, el exjefe del Estado Mayor del Comando de la Fuerza de Submarinos Héctor Alonso y el exjefe del Departamento de Operaciones Hugo Miguel Correa. La sentencia no convence a los familiares porque es “bastante contradictoria”  para lo que se estipula en las acusaciones, dijo a RFI Luis Tagliapietra, abogado y padre de una de las víctimas. Según él, los tres años sin prisión efectiva es una condena “irrisoria” frente a los cargos que enfrentó Villamide: además de ser responsable de “estrago culposo, que vendría a ser el hundimiento”, y que sería “agravado por la muerte de 44 personas”, tenía la “responsabilidad extra de cuidar a sus subordinados y las normativas de la institución”, explicó. En espera de justicia Luís, como otros familiares, insiste en que la única manera de hacer justicia es saber qué pasó aquel día bajo las aguas del Atlántico, puesto que a día de hoy, todavía existen múltiples incógnitas sobre la causa del accidente durante la misión de patrullaje del ARA San Juan. En el primer año “todo fue muy intenso", recordó. “Especulamos con encontrarlos con vida. Después por lo menos encontrar los restos del submarino. Cuando al final encontramos el resto del submarino esperábamos, y después pedimos y después exigimos, que se haga lo que se hace en cualquier investigación: hacer las pericias técnicas necesarias para tratar de saber qué es lo que ocurrió”, pero no se hizo por lo que decidieron llevar el caso ante los tribunales. Las autoridades hablan de accidente, mientras que la fiscalía sostiene que se trata de una “tragedia previsible”, ante fallas críticas de mantenimiento.  A pesar de las condenas, el tribunal todavía no ha hecho públicos los fundamentos de la sentencia que se conocerán a finales de agosto y será entonces cuando las familias confían en encontrar respuestas que les acerquen, al menos un poco más, a la justicia que llevan años reclamando.

The federal government's human capital arm added several new industry partners to its Tech Force hiring effort Monday as the program begins to take root in agencies. The new batch of companies is Cisco, Scale AI, Wiz, Arista Networks, Armada, Cognition AI, Cognizant, Payward, and Moveworks, per a release from the Office of Personnel Management. They join a cohort of a couple dozen companies that are already part of the program's industry support, including OpenAI, Google Public Sector, xAI, and Palantir. “These partnerships bring world-class engineering expertise into public service and create a stronger pipeline between industry and government at a moment when modernizing federal technology has never been more important,” OPM Director Scott Kupor said in a written statement Monday. According to the release, the companies will provide training resources and programming, as well as their own employees who they'll nominate for temporary federal service.
