The first ship in a solar-system armada reached its target 40 years ago today. Over the following week, four others joined it. Their target was Comet Halley. It was making its first passage through the inner solar system since 1910. So it was the first chance to study the comet from close range. And space agencies around the world responded. The Soviet Union and Japan each sent two spacecraft, and Europe added one more. The first to arrive was Vega 1, one of the Soviet missions. It and a companion, Vega 2, had first flown past Venus. They scanned the planet and dropped probes into its atmosphere. Both of them flew just a few thousand miles from Halley’s nucleus – its “body” of rock and ice. Europe’s contribution, Giotto, came even closer – just 370 miles. It snapped by far the best pictures of any comet. It found that most of the nucleus was covered by a “crust” that was darker than charcoal. But “jets” of ice and dust erupted from thin spots in the crust. They wrapped the nucleus in a cloud of debris. Sunlight and the solar wind pushed some of that material away from the comet, forming a tail that was millions of miles long. The United States was a notable no-show. A dedicated mission to Halley was scuttled. NASA did turn some craft that were already in space to face Halley, but they were millions of miles away. Este miércoles el Gobierno va a desclasificar "toda la documentación que se ha encontrado hasta el momento" sobre el golpe de Estado fallido del 23 de febrero de 1981, el 23F. Estarán disponibles en la página web de Moncloa.Roberto Muñoz Bolaños, profesor de Historia Contemporánea de la Universidad Camilo José Cela, Universidad del Atlántico Norte y Universidad Francisco de Vitoria, asegura en RNE: "No se van a desclasificar el sumario, ni la vista oral, que yo sí consulté". Lo que sí se va a desclasificar, explica, son las conversaciones que salieron del Congreso de los Diputados durante los días 23 y 24 de febrero, además de una serie de documentación que puede tener el Ministerio de Defensa: "Particularmente el informe Jáudenes del CSID que revela la implicación de un grupo de agentes y de alguna unidad de este servicio de información en la trama golpista". ¿Qué novedades pueden ser relevantes? Para el profesor, sería interesante ver las conversaciones del Congreso y conocer el interlocutor de la conversación que mantuvo el general Armada, de madrugada, una vez que fracasó su gestión ante Tejero: "Esa llamada está reconocida en la vista oral pero nunca Armada dijo quién era el interlocutor. Esa conversación sí que es verdaderamente interesante y eso no está tampoco en el sumario".Sobre si esta desclasificación servirá para frenar los bulos y teorías que circulan sobre el 23F, Muñoz Bolaños cree que "mientras no se desclasifique el sumario, la gente no tendrá claro cómo fue el 23F" y añade que no lo realmente importante es que la opinión pública española conozca qué pasó el 23 y el 24 de febrero de 1981. Following the hastily arranged three-hour meeting between President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday, it still remains unclear whether a military attack on Iran is in the cards, but the two leaders appear “more aligned than not” on their positions, Haaretz’s Washington D.C. correspondent Ben Samuels said on the Haaretz Podcast. “Whether or not that turns into a world war remains to be seen,” he added, in view of the “Armada in the Middle East and more military assets on their way” that the United States has positioned around Iran to keep the option of a military move on the table. Netanyahu rushed to Washington to lobby Trump to hold firm in his negotiations with Iran to include demands beyond a halt to their nuclear program. The Israeli position is that in order to forestall an attack, Iran must be forced to limit their ballistic missile capabilities and support for regional proxy organizations – in addition to a commitment from Tehran to improve its treatment of protesters, who have been killed in the tens of thousands by the regime in since late December. “What you're seeing from Israel is a very articulated view that any sort of negotiation at any deal has to be all inclusive,” Samuels said. The Trump administration’s position, by contrast, he said, is far from clear. “Part of this is intentional misdirection on Trump's part, but part of it is also very unintentional.
