MASS SHOOTING REPORTED IN TEXAS.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE-----  -International Events-Middle East: Significant events continue to take place in the Strait of Hormuz, with the United States expanding efforts to force the Strait open to civilian traffic. Last night, two Destroyers, the USS TRUXTON (DDG-103) and the USS MASON (DDG-87) crossed the Strait under heavy fire by the Iranians. Similarly, a KC-135 refueling tanker was observed conducting refueling operations for aircraft supporting Project Freedom throughout the night. At some point, the KC-135 declared an emergency and broke station, though the context of this situation remains unclear.-HomeFront-Washington D.C. - Yesterday afternoon, a shooting was reported in the vicinity of 15th Street and Independence Avenue. The suspect was originally identified by plain-clothes officers who saw the suspect's concealed firearm printing through his clothing. The USSS attempted to engage with the suspect, and during that approach the suspect drew his firearm and began firing at federal agents. USSS personnel returned fire, wounding the suspect. One bystander was wounded by the suspect during the engagement, though they sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Analyst Comment: The suspect has not been identified, and no further details of the suspect's intent have been provided. The USSS did make a note that the Vice President's motorcade passed through that intersection just a few minutes beforehand, and no mention was made of the suspect conducting an attack on the motorcade (despite initial reports). As a result, it's not clear as to if this was a routine crime/gang situation, or a more deliberate targeting effort. More details may come in due time, but as of now there is not enough context to determine what the intent of the engagement was.Texas: This afternoon a mass shooting was reported at a shopping center in the Carrollton Koreatown. Multiple people were wounded at the K Towne Plaza after one assailant conducted a small arms attack at a business center within the shopping center. Concerning casualties, 2x people were killed and 3x people were wounded during the attack, with the suspect fleeing on foot before being apprehended in the shopping center. The suspect has been identified as Seung Han Ho, and no information has been provided regarding a potential motive for the attack.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: As of this morning, the situation in the Middle East is still very fluid, but based on the events of the past 48 hours, a resumption of the shooting-phase of the war is increasingly more likely. In the Persian Gulf, the sudden disappearance of hundreds of vessels (or their "convergence" on one single point) on tracking maps is a classic case of both GPS jamming and AIS spoofing. Though many commentators have been hesitant to report the truth of what this is an indicator of (for OPSEC reasons), this professional courtesy is a moot point now, because SECWAR Hegseth let the cat out of the bag during a press conference this morning.When the spoofing first began en masse over such a large area late last night, this was a flashing neon sign indicating exactly one course of action...a mass convoy to surge ships out of the Gulf. A Task Force comprising of 3x Destroyers is currently transiting to their patrol areas off the coast of Venezuela, with the stated goal of combatting drug trafficking by sea.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Though it has been de-prioritized in the news cycle lately, the escalation of force to combat narco and cartel activity in Central and South America has continued to grow, with multiple Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) flights being observed deep inside Mexico over the past few weeks. A drone pilot leaving their transponder turned on while conducting a spying mission in southern Mexico is message, and a bold one at that.Last week, the Mexican government stated that they will hand over 26x cartel shotcallers to the United States, so that they cannot continue to run their vast narco empires from prison (or at least make it a little more challenging for them to continue operations). This is very likely an attempt at an olive branch...Mexico may be trying to play ball so that the United States doesn't start dropping Hellfire missiles in their country.More strategically speaking, one of the early indications and warnings of a very sharp increase in combat operations in an area, is the arrival of the US Navy. In the case of counter-narco operations in Central and South America, controlling the seas will be absolutely mandatory for any sort of escalation of conflict, should that course of action be the one taken later on. Arleigh-Burke Class Destroyers serve as a critical part of the Aegis defense doctrine; these vessels are mostly used for missile defense and providing protection for much more vulnerable assets (such as aircraft carriers). In this role they excel, however Destroyers also deploy with VBSS teams onboard. That stars die will be old news for most listeners. But sometimes, stars don't just die, they get ripped apart by supermassive black holes. Cormac, Cole and Lucia discuss these so-called tidal disruption events. Specifically, how these events are connected to X-ray absorption features called extreme coronal lines. It took a long time after I first read David Menconi's work to finally meet him, and longer still to sit with him for an extended conversation, but fortunately, the time has finally come. And if the saying “good things come to those who wait” applies here, if I was indeed waiting years for that Tuesday afternoon interview in late September 2024, then it is doubly appropriate now that our conversation sees the light of day in this podcast nearly another half a year afterwards. Decades after first reading his work, more than a year after first meeting him, and another stretch of months after interviewing him, now is the moment for all of this to come together. It all feels a bit fortuitous, a feeling which is echoed in our conversation, especially regarding the subject of David Menconi's latest book. David Menconi was a staff writer at the Raleigh News & Observer for 28 years, beginning in 1991, when the music scene in the region was exploding nationwide. He has also written for Rolling Stone, Billboard, Spin and New York Times. His latest book is titled Oh, Didn't They Ramble: Rounder Records and the Transformation of American Roots Music. David Menconi spoke with me at the IBMA conference in his adopted hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina, in a conversation which touches on the remarkable story of Rounder Records, a music label whose story, as David put it, is the kismet story. A label formed by three idealistic folkies fresh out of college, it went on to champion the music of artists ranging from Alice Gerard to Alison Krauss, from the Blake Babies to Billy Strings, and from Ted Hawkins to Tony Rice. David talks about the Rounder Records story, the current state of the music industry, the challenges faced by writers and musicians alike, as well as the significant history of bluegrass music in the city of Raleigh and the state of North Carolina and more, including music excerpts from Rounder Records artists like Norman Blake and George Thorogood in this episode Southern Songs and Stories.
