Cargo thieves aren't just stealing freight—they're outpacing traditional security methods with fraudulent carriers, fake BOLs, and even high-speed heists. Cargo theft has surged 50% year-over-year, leaving shippers and brokers scrambling for protection. But while criminals are getting smarter, so is technology. On this episode of Everything is Logistics, Jonathan Ryan, CPTO of Overhaul, reveals how AI and machine learning are helping companies prevent theft before it happens. Key Takeaways: Cargo theft is up 50% from 2023 to 2024, with electronics, pharmaceuticals, and food as the biggest targets. Thieves are forging BOLs mid-transit using mobile printers, allowing them to walk away with shipments undetected. The Romanian Roll, a high-speed theft method, is now happening in the U.S., putting drivers at greater risk. Overhaul's Fraud Watch AI analyzes historical theft data, FMCSA records, and live tracking data to detect risky carriers and suspicious shipments. Overhaul's law enforcement network has achieved a 96% recovery rate, with boots on the ground in as little as 10-20 minutes after an incident. Listen now to learn how AI-driven fraud detection, real-time load monitoring, and industry intelligence are changing the game for supply chain security.LINKS:Jonathan's LinkedInOverhaul's WebsiteWATCH THE FULL EPISODE HEREFeedback? In the past two weeks, the number of unaccompanied children being held at the border has tripled, with many being held in Customs and Border Protection custody for longer than the 72-hour limit prescribed by law. According to reporting in the New Yorker, the Biden team tried to prepare for the arrival of minors in the fall, but then-President Donald Trump’s political appointees at H.H.S. and D.H.S. refused to meet with them, deliberately sabotaging their ability to plan ahead. An array of factors including natural disasters and the COVID-19 pandemic have led thousands stranded in northern Mexico as they await their hearings and instructions from the administration. In the meantime, immigrants-rights advocates plan to monitor facility conditions and the pace at which unaccompanied children are moved into the care of family sponsors. John Burnett and Jonathan Ryan join us from their posts near the border to discuss why unaccompanied minors are arriving en masse and what options the government has moving forward. Questions? At the southern border, the rhetoric and emotion surrounding the issue of immigration have stood in the way of comprehensive reform. Where policy has fallen short, international, national and local nonprofit organizations have stepped in to provide vital, life-saving services. On this week’s episode, we’re taking a sobering look at the realities of what happens to migrants when they reach the border. Joining us are civil society leaders working to lessen the trauma for migrants and asylum seekers fleeing violent crime and political persecution. Lee Gelernt, Deputy Director of the ACLU’s Immigrants’ Rights Project, Carolyn Miles, President and CEO of Save the Children, Maria Moreno, Principal of the Las Americas Newcomer School, and Jonathan Ryan, CEO and President of RAICES, are in conversation with Neal Keny-Guyer, CEO of MercyCorps. Some of you will know that part of what I do to earn a living is voice-over work. So, it was a real pleasure to chat this week to one of the legends of the Irish voice-over scene. Jonathan Ryan did his first gig back in the 80s, and he's been a mainstay behind the mic ever since. If you're in Ireland, you'll almost certainly recognise his voice when we start talking. As well as that though, Jonathan is an actor, appearing in TV shows like The Irish RM, The Tudors, and Fair City, and in movies like In the name of the Father and Patriot Games. We chat about how he got into acting, how the role in that Harrison Ford blockbuster was nearly a much bigger one, foreign language VOs, talking into a microphone for money and how it was that a man with a voice so deep was actually the very first person to voice kids TV puppet Bosco! It's a show packed full of stories and anecdotes, I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I did recording it.
