This week's Immigration Lawyers Toolbox® Podcast with John Q. Khosravi, Esq. covers the latest immigration law updates, USCIS trends, and practice tips. Recorded live every Monday, this series keeps attorneys sharp and informed.
As families prepare to send their kids back to school this year, some parents must face a new worry: will their children make it home safely, or will they be there to greet them, at the end of the day? Trump's immigration crackdown is taking a toll on families across America, particularly under new guidance that allows ICE to arrest people in places where they were formerly prohibited from doing so—like schools, healthcare facilities, and places of worship. How will this impact students and families across the nation—and what can we do to fight back?Helping us to sort out these questions and set the record straight is our very special guest, Kevin R. Johnson: Kevin R. Johnson is the former dean and a Professor of Law at UC Davis. He is also Professor of Chicana/o Studies and Director of the Aoki Center for Critical Race and Nation Studies at UC Davis. He has published extensively on immigration law and civil rights. He is the author of How Did You Get to Be Mexican? A White/Brown Man's Search for Identity (1999) and Immigration Law and the US-Mexico Border (2011). Johnson blogs regularly on immigration law and policy developments at ImmigrationProf, and is quoted regularly by the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and other local, state, national and international news outlets. In an unsigned order, the Supreme Court lifted a restriction on ICE from conducting indiscriminate stops and raids in Los Angeles that have been decried as racial profiling. Lindsay Nash, professor of law at Cardozo Law, co-director of the Kathryn O. Greenberg Immigration Justice Clinic and co-director of the Center for Immigration Innovation, offers legal analysis of the ruling, and other immigration and deportation-related news.
In this episode of Passing Judgment, Jessica Levinson unpacks two recent Supreme Court emergency decisions. First, she discusses the Court's move to allow ICE raids in Los Angeles to proceed, highlighting the legal debate over what constitutes reasonable suspicion for immigration enforcement. Next, she examines a ruling permitting President Trump to fire an FTC commissioner, raising questions about presidential authority over executive agencies.Jessica then dives into a major Federal Circuit Court decision striking down President Trump's expansive tariffs, explaining why the court found he lacked statutory authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). With the Trump administration seeking Supreme Court review, Jessica explores what these rulings mean for executive power, immigration, and international trade. Here are three key takeaways you don't want to miss:1. 1. Supreme Court Emergency Docket Decisions: Jessica opens the episode with a breakdown of two new decisions from the Supreme Court's “emergency docket.” These aren't full decisions on the merits, but rather interim rulings that signal how the Court may eventually decide, and have real practical effects in the meantime.2. The Federal Circuit Court's Landmark Ruling on Tariffs: Jessica explains a recent and highly significant Federal Circuit Court decision regarding President Trump's use of reciprocal tariffs. The court held that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) does not authorize the president to impose sweeping tariffs as he did.3. The Core Legal Issue: Presidential Authority Under the IEEPA: A central theme is whether the IEEPA grants the president power to impose tariffs. The court found it does not, highlighting that the statute's language does not include terms like "tariff," "duty," or "tax," distinguishing it from other statutes where Congress has explicitly delegated tariff authority.Follow Our Host: @LevinsonJessica

The Immigration Minister says changes to deportation laws were started because of the Mama Hooch rapists' case. Erica Stanford is proposing to make deportation possible for visa holders who've been here less than 20 years and also committed a serious crime. That's up from the existing 10 years - and could also apply to historic crimes. Stanford says Australian serial rapists Danny and Roberto Jaz currently can't be deported because they've been here over 10 years. "This is where all this work started from, which is just toughening up to make sure that we can deport people who've committed serious sexual and violent offences."
