News flash: Slavery didn't end after the Civil War. Thanks to the massive loophole of the 13th Amendment, it's still going strong - in the form of forced prison labor all across America. We take you to Louisiana, the world's incarceration leader. Local historian Eric Seiferth tells about Louisiana's barbaric prison labor system, where inmates are forced to toil in the same fields worked by enslaved people over 150 years ago. Deep DIve Takes a Look at Navarro's Latest Article on the Bureau of Prisons

Peter Navarro‘s In Trump Time Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 14, 2024 9:34

READ THE ARTICLE AT WWW.PETERNAVARRO.SUBSTACK.COM  Listen NOW to the Deep Dive Duo discuss the article.  It's a little woke but otherwise does a good job. Briefing Doc: Peter Navarro's Critique of the First Step Act Implementation This briefing doc analyzes Peter Navarro's Substack article detailing his experience in prison and subsequent investigation into the Bureau of Prisons' (BOP) implementation of the First Step Act (FSA). Main Themes: BOP Failure to Implement the FSA: Navarro argues that the BOP, under Democrat leadership, is deliberately obstructing the implementation of the FSA, a bipartisan criminal justice reform bill signed into law by President Trump in 2018. Taxpayer Waste and Human Misery: This obstruction, according to Navarro, results in unnecessary incarceration, costing taxpayers billions of dollars while causing immense suffering for inmates and their families. Prison Industrial Complex: Navarro blames the "Prison Industrial Complex," comprising BOP staff, private contractors, and the privatized prison system, for profiting from keeping prisons full and resisting FSA implementation. Call to Action for Congress and 2024 Election Implications: He urges Congress to intervene and force the BOP to implement the FSA fully. He also suggests this issue could sway voters in the 2024 presidential election, favoring Trump, who championed the FSA, and potentially hurting Kamala Harris, who, according to Navarro, made unfulfilled promises regarding the release of nonviolent offenders. Important Ideas and Facts: FSA Benefits: The FSA aims to reduce over-sentencing by offering earned good behavior and training credits. It also facilitates inmate transition back into society through halfway houses or home confinement. Scope of the Problem: Navarro estimates that over 60,000 FSA-eligible inmates are unjustly incarcerated, costing taxpayers up to $5 billion. He provides specific examples of individuals, like Del Gowing and Dr. Armand Abovyan, who remain imprisoned despite being eligible for release under the FSA. Proposed Solutions: Navarro proposes two solutions: Expand Home Confinement: Require the BOP to place inmates in home confinement if halfway house capacity is insufficient. He cites Judge Joseph LaPlante's ruling in Leavitt v. Warden (2024) as precedent. Accurate Release Date Calculation: Mandate the BOP to utilize the "maximum conditional FTC calculator" to ensure accurate release date forecasting. Quotes: "During my prison stay, I discovered that the Bureau of Prisons has steadfastly refused to enforce the 2018 First Step Act, which was passed through the leadership and 'smart on crime' vision of Donald Trump." "Cumulatively, the cost of such BOP malign neglect directly costs taxpayers up to $3 billion for the more than 60,000 FSA-eligible inmates." "This is a bipartisan issue that both sides of the aisle are failing on." "Tens of thousands of family members of inmates across the battleground states may well vote for Donald Trump because he led passage of the FSA." Conclusion: Navarro's article presents a scathing critique of the BOP's handling of the FSA, highlighting its human and economic costs. His call to action for Congress and his framing of the issue as a potential 2024 election decider underscores his belief in the urgency and political significance of this matter. It's crucial to note that Navarro's perspective is inherently biased due to his personal experience and political affiliations. Further investigation and analysis from diverse perspectives are needed to fully evaluate the extent and implications of the BOP's FSA implementation.

Being a 140-pound 19 year old, who had not yet had to shave is a daunting time to enter an American prison with a life sentence, especially when the system has no interest in rehabilitating you or helping you reintegrate into society. The greed of the prison industrial complex squeezing slave profits out of imprisoned people through the exploitation of the 13th amendment and the brutal system set up to limit opportunity usually leaves most who walk through the gates hopeless and abandoned.Dorsey Nunn, a formerly incarcerated individual, co-director of Legal Services for Prisoners with Children (LSPC) and co-founder of All of Us or None (AOUON), a grassroots movement of formerly incarcerated people working to secure their civil and human rights, explains to host Robert Scheer how his prison experience is rare but demonstrates that it is possible to make it out of San Quentin's cells a changed person, with the hope of helping others.

But what's real and what's fear mongering, and how can reformers counter the rhetoric to advance alternatives? In this episode, Laura Flanders and co-host Amir Khafagy speak with Silky Shah, Executive Director of Detention Watch Network, about her new book is “UNBUILD WALLS: Why Immigrant Justice Needs Abolition”, and Aron Thorn, Senior Attorney with the Texas Civil Rights Project's Beyond Borders Program about the road ahead. Texas Governor Greg Abbott's Operation Lone Star program and the state-based deportation process proposed in his state's Senate Bill SB4 could set the tone for the country. Activists can do their best to call out abuses, but what is really needed is an entirely new approach. What difference would an abolitionist lens make?“I find it very troubling that we have economies that are solely dependent on the exploitation of immigrant labor. This country depends on the exploitation of immigrant labor, yet you're seeing all these draconian measures, especially in places like Texas and now New York . . .” - Amir Khafagy“There's been some minor reforms here and there . . . I don't want to dismiss that, but none of it's been at the scale that it needs to be. There needs to be a real investment that doesn't just let the Republicans dictate the debate . . .” - Silky Shah“It's fascinating to see my colleagues in New York grappling with some of the same really difficult questions that border Texans have grappled with for a really long time. What does it look like to give meaningful support to folks who are coming here and seeking a better life?” - Aron ThornGuests:• Amir Khafagy (Co-host): Journalist, Report for America Member, Documented• Silky Shah: Director, Detention Watch Network; Author, Unbuild Walls• Aron Thorn: Senior Attorney, Texas Civil Rights Project (TCRP), Beyond Borders Program Full Episode Notes are located HERE.  They include related episodes, articles, and more.Music In the Middle:  RUMTUM remix of “Mirage” by Captain Planet courtesy of Bastard Jazz Records..  "Steppin" and "The Gall" by Podington Bear. Whitney is joined by Waleisah Wilson, a friend and colleague, in this really real episode on what it is like navigating life and career after incarceration. Waleisah Wilson is a dedicated criminal justice reform activist and organizer. She staunchly supports efforts that address disability justice, ending solitary confinement and mass incarceration, voter disenfranchisement, ending the stigmas associated with having a criminal record and eliminating the unjust barriers to reentry. Her passion stems from her personal struggles with reentry and is the reason why she founded NewLife Second Chance Outreach, Inc., a nonprofit organization that addresses the lack of direct employment services for those with criminal convictions. In this candid conversation, Whitney and Waleisah discuss the systemic issues surrounding mass incarceration, the importance of language in humanizing individuals with criminal records, and the need for grace, forgiveness, and compassion in our communities. They highlight the impact of racial capitalism on employment opportunities for people of color and the barriers faced by those with criminal records.Through personal anecdotes, Waleisah sheds light on the need for change in how we view and support individuals reentering society. This episode challenges listeners to rethink their perceptions and consider actionable steps to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all members of our community.Waleisah holds two Master's degrees, one in Human Services and one in NonprofitManagement, and a Graduate Certificate in Criminal Justice. The Second Chances Mini-Series spotlights four people who are finding their way after incarceration and who have been able to build a career doing what they love. This mini-series are their stories. Up first is Gabrielle Perry, MPH. Thank you, Gabrielle, for sharing your very personal story with us.  In this powerful podcast episode, host Whitney Lee engages in a candid conversation with Gabrielle Perry, founder of the Thurman Perry Foundation. They discuss the challenges faced by women impacted by incarceration, discussing reentry into society, the impact of incarceration on individuals and communities, and the importance of dignity and empathy in the criminal legal system. Gabrielle shares her personal journey of resilience having faced being a caregiver at a young age, incarceration, and homelessness, and having succeeded in becoming an epidemiologist. Her life story sheds light on the systemic barriers faced by formerly incarcerated individuals. Even one day in jail uproots an entire life and the community that that life touches. Gabrielle shares too about survivors guilt after beating the odds, and recalls the moment she had to decide whether she would be upfront about her history to future employers and educators.Through their discussion, they challenge societal perceptions and biases towards those with criminal legal involvement or criminal convictions, emphasizing the need for compassion and support in the reentry process. April is Second Chance Month in the United States. During Second Chance month, we bring awareness to the journey of formerly incarcerated people returning to society. Communities throughout the United States are in dire need of a stronger reentry ecosystem for those returning from incarceration and institutionalization. Formerly incarcerated people and people with arrest records, truancy records, or other involvement with the criminal legal system face a stigma that is life long and impacts the ability to someone to secure safe and affordable housing, and to secure gainful employment or access to certain careers, among other things. Resources Mentioned:Thurman Perry Foundation: https://thurmanperryfoundation.org/The Thurman Perry Foundation is a Louisiana-based non-profit dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls impacted by incarceration. They have several signature programs including the Perry Second Chance Scholarship to fund higher education for women and girls impacted by incarceration (accepting applications through April 2024!) This week's bonus show answers questions from our listeners at the Democracy Defender-level and higher, starting with incarceration rates in the U.S. vs. Russia. Spoiler alert: GOP-led states and swing states are as bad or worse than Russia, starting with Mike Johnson's Louisiana. We look at prison incarceration rates and what they can tell us about the struggle for democracy in America, what we're up against, and how to overcome it, and more, in this week's bonus show.   There's a lot to discuss given the recent news, with new sweeping sanctions against Russia; new DOJ indictments against Russia; Libs of TikTok killing Nex, a trans teen in Oklahoma; Alabama going full Taliban by banning IVF, and more. Join Gaslit Nation and Kremlin File for a live Q&A this Wednesday February 28 at 12pm ET. To our subscribers at the Truth-teller level and higher, look out for a Zoom link on the morning of the Q&A on Wednesday. We hope to see you there!    A special message to our Gaslit Nation community: Several listeners sent messages about the hate crime that killed Nex, a trans teen in Oklahoma. Nex was targeted and killed by the genocidal far-right echo chamber led by Chaya Raichik of Libs of TikTok, which, in any functional society, would have been banned by now. Erin Reed has written an essential, must-read piece on Nex's murder, featured in the show notes of this episode. What happened to Nex is authoritarian scapegoating 101. Genocidal movements consolidate around violence to rally the sadists who will serve as the trusted lackeys to carry out a mass purge once in power, turning a former democracy into a prison. Chaya Raichik will undoubtedly be included in the Heritage Foundation's Project 2025 plan to mass purge our government should Trump win the Electoral College in 2024. Nex's murder is a tragedy that must be recognized for what it is: a hate crime. It is also an urgent warning as Trump and his supporters consolidate with the desire to carry out genocide against the most vulnerable among us, especially LGBTQ+ people and their families, friends, doctors, teachers, and others in their support networks.  Our hearts go out to all those who feel unsafe due to this heinous crime. The Gaslit Nation community is here for you. Look out for an upcoming episode on ways to fight back and protect each other. In the meantime, listen to our spring 2022 interview with Chase Strangio, Deputy Director for Transgender Justice with the ACLU's LGBT & HIV Project, included in our show notes.  If you didn't hear your question answered this week, look out for it next week as our Gaslit Nation Q&A continues! It's Hump Day! Sam and Emma speak with independent journalist Erin Reed, author of the Erin In The Morning newsletter on SubStack, to discuss the state of anti-trans legislation moving its way around the country in 2024. Then, they speak with Margie Mason & Robin McDowell, investigative reporters for the Associated Press, to discuss their recent reporting on prison labor in the United States. And in the Fun Half, Tim Heidecker makes a special appearance! First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the House GOP blowing their majority, Donald Trump's legal woes, the Nevada election, UAW expansion, Ronna McDaniel, and the IRS, also watching MTG reflect on the recent failures of her and her cohorts. Erin Reed then joins, diving right into the busy 2024 in state-level anti-trans legislation in the US, first parsing through the media's insistence on emphasizing bigoted and misinformed perspectives – as seen in the New York Times's recent piece by Pamela Paul – and how the arguments seen in those texts are perfectly reflected in the statehouse hearings in red states. Expanding on this, Reed walks through the major legislative developments in the anti-trans fascism of the US, including Indiana's school-snitch forms, the plethora of legislation coming out of Missouri and Iowa, and Florida's Real ID bill, before wrapping up by looking at the major donors behind the GOP's tactic of all-out transphobia. Margie Mason and Robin McDowell then walk Sam and Emma through their research into the thriving industry of Prison labor in the US, with a particular focus on the agricultural industry and how it presents a clear thread on the US' evolution from a Slavery economy to the Prison-Industrial Complex. They then look to the Louisiana Angola Prison as a perfect representation of this, literally evolving from a plantation to a prison over Reconstruction, helping them to tackle the role of the 13th Amendment in pushing this development, before parsing through the major labor rights issues involved in prison labor, and how states do (and don't) regulate it. Wrapping up, Mason and McDowell explore the reactions from major industries and corporations that benefit from prison labor to the growing transparency around the issue, and what changes to look for moving forward. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma are joined by Tim Heidecker as he and Sam put aside their differences in appreciation of the true journalism that the US so lacks today. Expanding on this, they parse through Tim's in-depth report on Tim Pool's too-easily digestible content, explore some industry musings on what could be going on behind the scenes at the Compound™, and ponder the likelihood of an FBI infiltration into the TimCast team. Sam and Emma also parse through the unsurprising reports coming out about the dearth of proof in Israel's claims about UNRWA involvement on October 7th, and have an expansive conversation on Democrats' (and the media's) insistence on fully embracing Donald Trump's framing on the immigration debate. The state of Michigan spends $48,000 per prisoner every year — with little to no money going towards funding for prison education, art and rehabilitation programs. The Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP) is an independent program of the University of Michigan that supports formerly incarcerated artists, facilitates creative arts workshops and even hosts an annual exhibition to showcase incarcerated artists' work. PCAP was founded by William “Buzz” Alexander, the late husband of Janie Paul, the curator of PCAP and author of the book based on the project: “Making Art in Prison: Survival and Resistance”, out now via Hat and Beard Press. As you'll hear in the program, the work of PCAP has built a vibrant community of artists inside and outside prison walls. Joining us for this conversation are Janie Paul and artist Yusef Qualls, known as Q. He was released from prison five months ago after being sentenced to life as a minor and serving 28 years. Danny Valentine is a formerly incarcerated artist also featured in the book, who credits PCAP for saving his life. What can incarcerated artists teach us about why humans make art and the power it holds? All that, plus a commentary from Laura on poets imagining Gaza.Guests:•  Janie Paul: Author, Making Art in Prison: Survival and Resistance; Emerita Professor of Art, University of Michigan; Curator, Prison Creative Arts Project•  Q (Yusef Qualls): Former Juvenile Lifer & Incarcerated Artist•  Danny Valentine: Formerly Incarcerated Artist Full Episode Notes are located HERE.  They include related episodes, articles, and more.

Accent of Women broadcasts a speech by Angela Davis from 2013 – 10 years ago. This talk is called Justice for Palestine and the Stop G4S campaign. I broadcast this speech, at this point in time, to remind us all that this current bombardment did not start on October 7 and did not start with Hamas' defensive attack on Israel. This speech was given in memorium of Nelson Mandela's death only a few weeks earlier, and Angela Davis here draws the links between South African and Israeli Apartheid.

Ian speaks with journalist Shea Hennum about their article on #comicsbrokeme, in which workers in the comics industry shared their stories of tight deadlines, unreasonable workloads, and low pay following the death of cartoonist Ian McGinty. For the article, which appeared at solrad.co, they applied an analysis that synthesized communist and anarchist traditions in order to identify a multitude of sites of political struggle, challenge systems of domination and violence, and chart possible ways forward, similar to analysis applied in the movement to abolish the Prison Industrial Complex. They discuss past efforts to organize within the comic book industry as well as current organization efforts, such as the formation of the United Workers of Seven Seas, a union of workers at Seven Seas Entertainment, Comic Book Workers United, a union of workers at Image Comics, and Cartoonist Cooperative, a cohort of cartoonists committed to mutual promotion, skill and info sharing, and efforts to make industry wages and practices more transparent. They also discuss possible ways for comic book readers to offer support. 20 September 2023 - 12PM EST - Good morning! This morning, Joe is joined by Angela Stanton King, Angela is an American author, television personality, and truth speaker based in Atlanta, Georgia. Angela tells a bit about her life story, how she grew up in an environment that encouraged the school-prison-pipeline, and how she overcame these challenges. Angela discusses how abortion is used as a way to deal with black issues, how it is promoted in black communities, instead of actually helping black mothers and their families. This, she attributes, is because of the democrats who have come into these cities with promises to help make things better, but instead they move toward a goal of demonic depopulation. While solo - Joe discusses all things border, AI, government overreach, and he shares some laughs.  Follow us on Social Media: https://libertylinks.io/ConservativeDaily https://libertylinks.io/JoeOltmann https://libertylinks.io/Apollo HEY! In this discussion we talk to CalvinJohn Smiley about his book Purgatory Citizenship: Reentry, Race, and Abolition, which examines how individuals returning to society navigate and negotiate this process with diminished legal rights and amplified social stigmas.  CalvinJohn Smiley, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Sociology Department of Hunter College-City University of New York. He also has worked to abolish the death penalty, and currently volunteers at Rikers Island and Horizon Juvenile Center facilitating restorative justice programming. We talk to Smiley about his concept of purgatory citizenship, and understanding reentry as a verb rather than a noun. We talk through his application of Walter Rodney's analytical tools from How Europe Underdeveloped Africa to the history of Newark, NJ. Much of this conversation is centered on the experiences of folks returning from prison, and barriers presented by parole and probation processes, navigating housing, employment and many other visible and less visible hurdles. We also discuss the Prison Reentry Industry and its role within the Prison Industrial Complex or Carceral Continuum. You can pick up this book from our friends over at Massive Bookshop.  And speaking of radical abolitionist re-entry work. Our comrades over at Jailhouse Lawyers Speak have been working to build a housing center for women returning from prison. That is still a work in progress and can be supported so we'll put a link to that project in the show notes where you can learn more and support their work there. https://www.jlshousingcenter.com And of course a friendly reminder to support the podcast on patreon if you can. Between the study, the preparation, the editing and all the other aspects of running this show it is more than a full time job for me. Josh also puts in a significant number of hours to the show in addition to other work obligations. We really appreciate all the folks who chip in and make this show possible and if you are a listener who has not yet become a patron of the show, if you can afford to part with as little as $1 a month you can help us keep this show going. We have struggled to hit our goals in recent months and are hoping we can hit our goal for the month of September.  So kick in at patreon.com/millennialsarekillingcapitalism if you can.
