Spinning Out (another music podcast) We talk to artists about their favorite albums and go on wild tangents. This week on the pod we're joined by JP Flexner. We're talking about the Angus soundtrack. We also chat a lot about the film & all of the bands on the soundtrack. Little departure from the usual format, but it was a fun little detour. JP is an artist who has recently done work for the Mountain Goats, Sleater Kinney, Green Day and recently even did the album art for my band, Late Bloomer. He's a great friend who I've known for over ten years and just a delight to chat with. Just to note, this chat goes long, but there's so much to cover with the film, the soundtrack, the bands included & our relationship. JP also runs Sparkwell Design Studio with his lovely partner, Nicole Saltzer. They've worked with clients such as Neshaminy Creek, Dottie's Donuts, Althouse Dispensary, Trauger Brewing and Baywater Farms. Between band AND brand design, they've got both covered, so hit them up!! https://www.sparkwelldesignstudio.com/ Subscribe to our Patreon here: www.patreon.com/spinningoutpod Follow us on social media -- twitter and instagram (@Spinningoutpod)

This week's featured artist is JP Flexner who we came to learn of through his work with Neshaminy Creek Brewing Co. Anytime I get the opportunity to call folks back in my hometown of Philadelphia it seems like a huge win for me and the project and this case was no different. JP's story is a great one of someone who loves his craft, is true to himself and does what he does for the love and joy of creating imagery, branding and characters. Listen to us geek out over music and life with ease and comfort that couldn't be forced. Hear how he is trying to take my gig as the interviewer with his upcoming round table for Philly Beer Week (just messing' JP!) A fun episode and perspective on the power of topography too. One of the big joys was his client base and those folks he choose to align himself with and how their mission and vision impacts his choice to partner with them. He gives all of himself to them and it is much more than a business relationship when you get to hear him talk about them. It will have you look at his book of business and portfolio with a unique appreciation that much like his relationships, can't be forced.

…on finding rhythm in a life of design. JP Flexner is a designer and illustrator with a gift for bringing packaging to life, whether it’s through his brilliant collection of labels for Neshaminy Creek Brewing Company or his work with Rise Up Coffee. His talent for lettering and typography goes hand-in-hand with his distinct style. He joins the show for a conversation about creating fonts out of your lettering, drawing skulls at the Mutter Museum and air-drumming while running.

Joseph A. Gervasi interviews Josie DiCarlo of Barnet Fair, Mike Ski of True Hand Society, Shannon Roche of Crust Vegan Bakery, Mike Barone of Grindcore House, and Rob Jahn and JP Flexner of Neshaminy Creek Brewing Company. This was a panel discussion held at the Neshaminy Creek Brewing Company in Croydon, PA upon their invitation. The discussion was about punks who own and operate businesses. Despite being a terribly noise environment thanks to many individuals present not for the event but to drink and eating loudly amongst themselves, the discussion was still fascinating and well worth your time in listening. While full apologies are issued due to the sound, you’ll still find a thoughtful discussion of how each respective business came to be, what the interviewees brought to their business to make it unique, how the businesses reflect the ethics of punk, operating with a conscience under capitalism, dealing with the city/state and all the regulations that come with running a legit business, the toll making and sustaining a dream project takes on one’s life, and a great deal more. Many thanks go out to the Neshaminy Creek Brewing Company for making this event happen and helping to bring together these inspiring business owning punks. They also make excellent beer. The music of Philadelphia's Beach Slang alludes to a feeling of youth and vulnerability. Sounding equal parts punk and pop, their similarity to artists such as The Replacements can't be denied, but they're fully rooted in the present. Now Beach Slang find themselves at a crossroads. Shortly after drummer JP Flexner left the band, guitarist Ruben Gallego was fired amid controversy. Committed to carrying on, frontman James Alex has embarked on a tour supporting "A Loud Bash Of Teenage Feelings" performing by himself. Recently Alex told fans on Facebook "If you come to a show, know that it's going to be just me, my electric guitar and my amplifier—loud and loose and unyielding."
