A two-way interview between journalist Patricia Miller and Joe Dolce about the gut-wrenching illness called hyperemesis.A few weeks ago Patricia Miller, associate editor of Cannabis & Tech Today magazine, called to talk about hyperemesis, the strange and increasingly more reported illness that hits some cannabis users hard. Hyperemesis is defined as bouts of cyclical vomiting caused from combusting flower (i.e., smoking a joint), but trust me, what happens is way more painful than simple puking. It’s as if your stomach is being turned inside out – gut wrenching -- and it can last for hours, in extreme cases, days. The few scientific papers on it contend that it is followed by a compulsive desire to take hot showers. In my case I was so wasted after each bout I could barely crawl into bed, let alone stand in a shower. As one who always wants to be first on a trend, I was hit with hyperemesis while reporting Brave New Weed and about a half dozen times in the subsequent two years. I couldn’t understand how a plant that chemotherapy patients use to quell nausea would send me into paroxysms of puking. After months of investigating I never identified the cause but I did learn a lot about the chemistry and biology of the cannabis plant, and turned that into a book. There’s no consensus about what hyperemesis is or what detonates it. Dr. Raphael Mechoulam surmised it is dose or strain related. Others blame pesticides or other chemicals used in cultivation that have not been properly cleared from harvested bud. Others say it’s caused by today’s super strong weed that can clock in at 30% THC. My own experience elides all of these theories. I was smacked down after a fat dab as well as on the very first puff of a joint. As for the quality/variety of the herb, well, I’ve been privileged to inhale some of the finest, organic, sun-grown, pesticide-free weed grown in North America, so quality and variety aren’t the only culprits. Patricia proposed interviewing me about my experiences but I suggested we interview each other in hopes of informing more people who’ve been felled. I don’t think hyperemesis is necessarily a new illness; rather, I suspect more people are reporting it now that legalization has opened up the conversation. Some sufferers I’ve met have quit using completely to avoid any future misery. Personally, I’ve navigated a cautious path and have concluded that the only surefire way of inhaling flower without retching is through vaporization. My untested theory is that there is something in the plant matter itself that triggers the convulsions. Before this interview I asked a few chemists if they had come across any home grown remedies. The only response came from James Curran, who has appeared on Episode 67 of this podcast. He forwarded this study that identifies capsaicin, the fiery ingredient in cayenne pepper, as a possible antidote because it interferes with the biochemical triggering. And here’s a link to Miller’s report. Clearly, there’s more to learn, so if any of you out there in cannabisland have insights, observations or stories to share, let us know.

If you want to know the secrets of the plant, talk to a plant scientist (or a shaman). This interview with phytochemist James Curran will make you reevaluate everything you thought you knew about cannabis – and appreciate how much more there is to learn.I’ve found that cannabis, like many plant medicines, seems to select certain people at a very young age and cast a spell over them. That may sound woo-woo to you, but in the cannabis world, there are people who somehow, perhaps by divine intervention, make the plant their calling. They may not have a PhD from Harvard, or work in a research facility, but they are self taught experts and apply a great deal of science and erudition to their study of the plant. James Curran is one of those special people. Curran is a phytochemist who has been investigating cannabis for the last decade, both personally and professionally. I originally called him because I wanted some some help cutting through the veil of hype surrounding so many new products and technologies on the market. How much more effective really are the new “water soluble” beverages at the moment? Does “nano-emulsification” truly deliver cannabinoids into the bloodstream more quickly? Can manufacturers buy terpenes off the shelf and simply add them into products to increase their efficacy, as so many are claiming? And what on earth is the difference between Delta 8 THC and Delta 9 THC (and where can I get some)? James had the answers to these and other questions. But this interview gets really buzzy when he revealed that he has an extraction method that allows him to harvest fresh terpenes from fresh cannabis. Being a scientist who uses his own body as a laboratory, he has ingested just 1mg of these fresh terps and reports that just a small amount of Alpha-pinene produced “25 minutes of a near psychedelic experience.” Until now, I believed that terps help direct the high -- but his report, and that of others indicates that THC isn’t the full story, that terps act collaboratively to cause the high. Listen in to learn more. If you want to contact James to talk about these and other issues, including remediation for “hot hemp” find him at Jamespacurran@gmail.com.

3 Questions with Bob Evans

Don’t call him James the Mormon anymore.  In fact, pretty soon you won’t be able to call him JTM either.  For James Curran, getting to the top of the Billboard Rap Chart and having Number One iTunes releases has been the easy part. Dealing with his fame and notoriety in the LDS community has been another story. Raised in an abusive family, James Curran is used to disappointment and negativity. But he never anticipated the mixed reaction he’s gotten from his faith group because of his music. In fact, it has caused to him to abandon his moniker, which had attracted an audience he appreciates, but wasn’t aiming for. So how can he fix the music streaming algorithms that lump his secular rap music with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir? Bob Evans with FOX 13 News in Salt Lake City sat down with rapper James Curran in September of 2019 for a 3 Questions interview.

With Trump ‘locked and loaded’, Emma and Chloe ask whether history repeating, and will Australia find itself at war in Iran?Reading ListOn Trump and Morrison/the US in the World:Dexter Filkins, “The Moral Logic of Humanitarian Intervention,” The New Yorker, 16 September 2019.https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2019/09/16/the-moral-logic-of-humanitarian-interventionElaine Pearson, “Trump’s Attack on Asylum-Seekers Was Made in Australia,” Foreign Policy, 24 July 2019https://foreignpolicy.com/2019/07/24/trumps-attack-on-asylum-seekers-was-made-in-australia-png-manus-island-nauru-new-zealand-refugees-offshore-detention/Tanya Levin, “What Scott Morrison’s faith means,” The Saturday Paper, Edition No. 261, July 13-19, 2019https://www.thesaturdaypaper.com.au/opinion/topic/2019/07/13/what-scott-morrisons-faith-means/15629400008440Jeffrey Goldberg, “The Obama Doctrine,” The Atlantic, April 2016https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2016/04/the-obama-doctrine/471525/“America’s ‘credibility’ is not the problem here,” Crikey, 31 October 2017.https://www.crikey.com.au/2017/10/31/yale-diaries-americas-credibility-is-not-the-problem-here/“The History of the USA and Australia’s Love In – and Turnbull’s Grovelling,” Daily Review, 6 May 2017.https://dailyreview.com.au/history-great-relationship-australia-us-love/59439/“Trump, Syria and the Irrelevance of History,” Daily Review, 15 April 2017.https://dailyreview.com.au/trump-syria-irrelevance-history/58522/“Teaching History in TrumpWorld,” Daily Review, 4 March 2017https://dailyreview.com.au/teaching-history-trumpworld/56534/On handshakes:Adam Boult and Chris Graham, “Justin Trudeau's handshake with Donald Trump the 'biggest display of dominance in the history of Canada',” The Telegraph, 14 February 2017.https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/02/13/justin-trudeau-becomes-latest-world-leader-brave-trumps-awkward/On Whitlam:Christopher Knaus, “Whitlam dismissal 'palace letters' case wins right to be heard by high court,” The Guardian, 16 August 2019https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2019/aug/16/battle-over-whitlam-dismissal-palace-letters-heads-to-high-courtGuy Rundle, “All facts point to US involvement in the Dismissal,” Crikey, 13 November 2015 [$].https://www.crikey.com.au/2015/11/13/rundle-all-facts-point-to-us-involvement-in-the-dismissal/James Curran, “How Whitlam rattled the ANZUS alliance,” The Monthly, August 2012.https://www.themonthly.com.au/issue/2012/august/1348618116/james-curran/dear-mr-presidentOn the US and anti-Semitism in the UK:Owen Jones, “Fighting smears and the antisemitic minority in the Labour party,” 8 March 2019https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Qxk0hW0_EQ&feature=youtu.be

This series, from 1983, gave me a chance to ponder issues, concerning the power and responsibility of journalistic media, that had preoccupied me every since I had begun working for CBC Radio twelve years before. Two "hooks" provided the occasion. The first was the calling of a Royal Commission to consider the problem of growing monopoly in the newspaper business. This was the Kent Commission, after commissioner Tom Kent, which reported in 1981. The second was the publication, in 1980, of the book which gave the series its title, Anthony Smith's The Geo-Politics of Information, a book on the clamour in what was then generally called the Third World for a New World Information Order, so-called, one not totally dominated by Western media. Both of these question are addressed - the history (and myth) of the free press in Part One, the New World Information Order debate in Part Two - but the series also allowed me to go further. Part Three looks at foreign news and draws heavily on the work of Noam Chomsky and Edward Said. Chomsky had recently published, with Edward Herman, a two volume work called The Political Economy of Human Rights, which had had a huge influence in shaping my view of media. In these books Chomsky and Herman show how a nominally free press faithfully reproduces what they call "imperial ideology." Said, for his part, had just brought out Covering Islam, a book in which he brought the thesis of his celebrated Orientalism into the present with a consideration of contemporary news coverage of Islamic countries. The final show of the set focused on the news industry's "mode of production" and the ways in which it shapes its finished product. One notable thing about this series was the number of prominent scholars in the field who agreed to take part. I have mentioned Chomsky and Said, but there was also Stuart Hall, James Curran, Gaye Tuchman, Lewis Lapham, Todd Gitlin and many others. Another was the strength of the interviews I recorded for the series, which led me into my first questioning of the documentary format in which I was then working. Documentaries have narrative requirements which tend to dictate how the component interviews will be edited. Mad Magazine used to joke, in a satire on the New York Times famous slogan, "all the news thats fit to print," that it presented "all the news that fits the print"; and documentaries are the same. The "clips" that will be cut out of the interviews will be those that fit the narrative requirements of the documentary. This generally precludes any sustained attention to the individual character or context of the thinkers who are quoted. Reflection on this issue led to the approach that I generally took in my work for Ideas after 1990 in which my subjects, wherever possible, were presented one-at-a-time and in depth. The participants in the series were as follows:Part One: Paul Rutherford, James Curran, Anthony Smith, Stuart Hall, Lewis Lapham, Carman Cumming, Todd GitlinPart Two: Juan Somavia, Rohan Samarajiva, Herbert Schiller, Anthony Smith, Tom McPhail, Bill Harley, Barry ZwickerPart Three: Edward Said, Stuart Hall, Noam Chomsky, James Aronson, Tom KentPart Four: Stuart Hall, Lewis Lapham, Gaye Tuchman, James Curran,Todd Gitlin, Carman Cumming, Paul Rutherford, Jeremy Wilson, Noam ChomskyA transcript of the series is available on the Transcripts page of the site.

In this episode, Charles Ortleb explores the similarities between the Bernie Madoff financial Ponzi Scheme and the deceitful Ponzi-like HIV science of AIDS at the Centers for Disease Control. Ortleb makes the case that the CDC's Ponzi scheme uses HIV fraud to disguise the real AIDS epidemic of HHV-6 diseases that includes the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome pandemic. He argues that the CDC's obsession with gay sex and venereal disease has basically blinded the CDC to the real nature of the AIDS epidemic. The CDC has convinced itself that AIDS is an STD when the real epidemic of HHV-6 (and its related viruses) clearly is not limited to sexual transmission. The CDC has put the health of the whole world at risk. He focuses on the work of the CDC's James Curran, one of the chief architects of the HIV/AIDS paradigm. Curran is now a celebrated Dean at Emory University. Ortleb argues that the CDC HIV Ponzi scheme will not end until the world recognizes the connection between AIDS and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Ortleb's books on AIDS and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (including one on James Curran) can be found at www.charlesortleb.com.   You can be a supporter of these podcasts by buying a copy of The Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Epidemic Cover-up at Amazon.

When James D Halloran joined Leicester University in 1958 as Senior Tutor in the Department of Adult Education, ‘mass communication’ was not an academic subject. But the field was changing rapidly: the Coronation had prompted a massive surge in television ownership and the launch of ITV had given people a choice of viewing. Jim Halloran taught evening classes at Vaughan College but found that he ran out of material so developed a module on the Sociology of Communication. This was turned into a paper published in a journal on Catholicism (there being no communications-related journals at that time) and then formed the basis of Halloran’s seminal book Control or Consent: A Study of the Challenge of Mass Communications, published in 1963. That same year, the Home Office set up the Television Research Committee, chaired by the Vice-Chancellor of Leicester, Fraser Noble - who appointed Halloran as the Committee Secretary. Initial funding for research at various institutions produced mixed results and confirmed Halloran’s belief that what was needed was a dedicated academic research centre. The Centre for Mass Communication Research at Leicester was consequently established in 1966 under Halloran’s directorship. It attracted a diverse group of academics from various disciplines, reflecting the absence of existing focus on communications research, but fortuitously leading to a multidisciplinary approach which benefited the centre. James Curran, a leading media theorist and author of Power Without Responsibility, has described Leicester as the “original hotbed” of mass communication research. For the first decade or so of the Centre’s existence, all its students were studying for PhDs, many of them drawn from India and other developing nations. Then, in 1978, the Social Science Research Council (predecessor of the ESRC) invited Halloran to design and deliver the UK’s first Masters Degree in media and communications. Thus was born the University of Leicester’s MA in Mass Communications, a degree which is still popular and relevant 35 years on. A distance learning variant was launched in 1995.
