She is known for her work with Wes Anderson on The Grand Budapest Hotel, which won the Academy Award for Best Production Design at the 87th Academy Awards. Since then, she has worked again with Wes Anderson on Isle of Dogs and The French Dispatch as well as on Steven Speilberg's West Side Story and Bridge of Spies. Annie's first book, Fake Love Letters, Forged Telegrams, and Prison Escape Maps, was published in 2020 by Phaidon. In her first children's book, Letters From The North Pole, five children from all around the world write to Santa Claus with ideas for Christmas gifts and are amazed when he writes back! Through five letters from Santa that children can pull out and read, the hidden world of the North Pole is revealed, from how reindeer can sleep standing up to what snacks Santa would like left out on Christmas Eve, and how he gets round the world so quickly. This is a nostalgic and festive tale, reminiscent of the classic The Jolly Postman and Annie's iconic work on such films as The Grand Budapest Hotel.   Margo and Annie discuss: How Annie's upbringing in a creative household influenced her decision to pursue graphic design and the pivotal moments that led her into the film industry Her impressive portfolio working on films and specific challenges and joys she encountered while working with distinctive styles of directors Hand-lettering vs. digital design Film prop details and some of the various intricate props she crafted Learning through mistakes, how using a 50-star flag instead of a 48-star flag in Bridge of Spies taught her to ensure historical accuracy Personal Projects vs. Commissioned Work What the job of a graphic designer on a film set typically involves and how it contributes to the overall storytelling in a movie Her captivating and interactive new children's book, Letters from the North Pole   Connect with Annie: www.instagra.com/AnnieAtkins www.annieatkins.com   Connect with Margo: www.instagram.com/windowsillchats www.windowsillchats.com www.patreon.com/inthewindowsill

Also, stewardship is key in co-laboring with God, taking what he has given us and giving it our best with excellence and gratitude. Building a business or pursuing ministry can be challenging, and it's important to recognize the value of practical skills and expertise, while still remaining obedient to God's leading. Lauren Hom is a California-born designer, illustrator & hand lettering artist with a 250k strong following on Instagram. She is known for her use of bright colour palettes & playful letterings and has worked for clients such as Starbucks, YouTube, TIME Magazine, Google and AT&T. She has also been recognised by Communications Arts, the Art Directors Club, the One Club, the Type Directors Club and the Webby Awards. But how did it all start? As with all STIMY episodes, we start from the very beginning: with Lauren's childhood & how she ended up studying at the School of Visual Arts for, of all courses, advertising! While there, she met influential figures who had a deep influence on her decision to become a freelance artist. Turns out, being the junior director of a big ad agency in New York wasn't the dream job she'd thought it would be!  Lauren also peels back the layers on some of her most popular passion projects, beginning with Daily Dishonesty - which landed her a book deal upon graduation! That proved pivotal, as it gave her a financial cushion to launch a freelance career. Three things stood out with Lauren's life story:her talent in lettering;her ability to use passion projects to change the trajectory of her freelance career, repeatedly; andher willingness to be open about how she executes her projects, markets them and what she earns! And finally, why she is now going on a sabbatical and entering culinary school. If you've ever been curious about the business side of an artist's career, then this is the episode for you.Highlights4:58 Work hard, snack hard5:38 Doing advertising11:40 Becoming a Junior Art Director in a big New York city ad firm13:36 Daily Dishonesty16:52 Seeing Daily Dishonesty go viral18:51 Getting an illustration agent20:14 Knowing when to say no to a client22:59 Planning to go freelance24:17 Earning $100,000 by Year 3 of freelancing25:12 Growing an audience on Instagram28:27 “Will Letter for Lunch” side project31:28 Getting clients like Microsoft & LinkedIn in less than 1 year34:12 Flour Crown & Peen Cuisine39:30 Traveling 1.5 years around the world40:47 Being inspired more by every day life44:35 Taking Back Sunday46:36 Taking a creative sabbatical to go to culinary school54:48 Would Lauren ever do street art?

Jill Kane is the creator of Jill Kane Designs. She lives outside of Philadelphia, PA with her husband and two young kids. She creates and sells modern hand lettering, abstract, floral, and watercolor art with inspiring and motivational mantras that remind individuals that, they are worthy of lovethey belongthey are enoughthey are not alonethey can do hard thingsIt is her intention that every person has a reminder of those truths to look at every day in their home or office. In addition to creating inspiring art, she uses the creative process to teach others how to give themselves permission to try something new, gain mastery of their mindset, and live and more creative and whole-hearted life.TAKEAWAYS:+ Jill's superpower is sharing her journey authentically, as it is happening. She desires deep connection with people and its through sharing her story real-time she creates those connections.+ Jill's journey with creativity started at the same time as her journey with motherhood. She decided to stay home with her newborn son, and leave her job. She didn't realize how much her worth was tied up in that job, and being home with her son exposed that idea of worth to her. The process of making art allowed her to learn how to trust in the process, how to try new things, and how shift, morph, and land on something that feels good to her.+ The mantra that Jill leans on is inspired by Brene Brown, and that is “I am enough.”+ The Vibrancy Collection is a new body of work inspired by mompreneurs who are building their businesses while also being fully present for their families. Jill is inspired by the drive that she sees in the online space from women who are choosing to believe in themselves and their business, when the results aren't quite there yet. It's that mission and focus that has inspired Jill in the creation of the Collection.RESOURCES: To visit the blog post that accompanies this episode go here: http://www.allisonhardy.com/blog1/episode230Learn more about The Vibrancy Collection: https://www.jillkanedesigns.com/vibrancycollectionVisit Jill on her website: www.jillkanedesigns.comFollow Jill on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jillkanedesigns CONNECT WITH ALLISON:Follow Allison on Instagram: www.instagram.com/allison_hardy_Join the 6-Figure Mompreneur Facebook Group: www.facebook.com/groups/themompreneurcommunityARE YOU A FAN OF THE PODCAST?If you found value from today's episode, head to iTunes and spread some love through giving the podcast a rating and a review. “I was raised to think that there was only one path that I could take… the traditional corporate path.”- ShinahSo, how exactly does someone with absolutely zero business or artistic training launch and grow an almost-million-dollar business as a creative entrepreneur? If I hadn't done it myself, I'd be just as confused as you!In this episode, I dive more deeply into the nitty-gritty details of how I transformed from an unhappy corporate securities lawyer to an unsure wannabe creative entrepreneur to a wildly successful calligraphy artist and teacher who loves what she does.(And since I love breaking things down, we're going to tackle my story in three parts!)My story starts back in childhood. I grew up with the idea that there was one path I needed to take in order to be successful. You know the one: study hard, get straight As, get into the best school I could, and land a prestigious job and financial stability. As you can probably tell, perfection was a major theme during that period of my life.To be honest, it never even occurred to me that there were other ways to be truly successful. I never really stopped to think about what I actually wanted my life to look like. So, I took that path. I went to Harvard, got my law degree, landed the job… and felt completely miserable.Until I decided to do something about it. The rest of the story? You'll have to listen to find out!Tune into this episode of The Shinah Show to find out:What finally pushed me onto the path of creative entrepreneurship  What I needed to do (and stop doing) in order to grow my business to $900k per year  Why it's totally okay to not love EVERYTHING about running your business Highlights:‌00:41  Let's break it down01:34  Part 1: How did I end up so miserable?03:24  “Wait, what do *I* want my life to look like?”05:19  The breaking point05:54  Part 2: Creative exploration07:02  Finding “the one”07:45  Calligraphy business first steps09:46  Part 3: Finding my sweet spot11:14  Don't feel guilty about not loving everything13:29  Japanese concept of Ikigai14:07  No overnight successes15:48  The numbers17:44  Stay on the path18:26  The bottom lineLinks:‌ ‌Learn calligraphy with me: www.freecalligraphyworkshop.comFollow me!Instagram: @crookedcalligraphyfacebook.com/crookedcalligraphy Show notes can be found at theshinahshow.comWatch these episodes on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVJJZS9jYDmzePAnaGDiFuw Make sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel, and ring the bell for notifications so you never miss an episode!
