It's been a minute since I've put out a new show, and so I thought maybe I'd let you in on what has been keeping me so busy. A couple years ago, I started working on an oral history project funded by the city- appropriately titled The Olympia Music History Project. We (myself, Mariella Luz and Kelsey Smith) have since broken off from the city into our own nonprofit organization, and I'm excited to announce that we are launching olympiamusichistory.org on New Year's Day, 2025! So let me tell you about what this is: I was a part of a team that interviewed 30 people who were doing significant things in Olympia's legendary indie music scene between 1980-2002. We spoke with folks from globally revered bands like Bikini Kill, Sleater-Kinney and The Gossip, as well as hometown heroes including Young Pioneers, The Noses, Fitz of Depression, even Olympia's only known ska band of that era, Engine 54. I've learned so much working on this project- and I've heard all the interviews several times, because I'm the guy who edited them. Have you ever seen that T-Shirt that says “Reading is Sexy?” That was designed by Sarah Utter, the singer and guitarist from The Bangs. Allegedly Patrick Swayze lived here at some point, but I don't know if he ever got out to any punk shows. And yeah, Nirvana was a part of our scene for a while too, I forget what happened after they moved to Seattle.  And there were all these festivals- International Pop Underground Convention in 1991, The YoYo A Go Go festivals after that, Ladyfest- which became an international series- and a groundbreaking, grassroots rock opera called The Transfused. All these things happened in that 22-year window.  My interview with a guy named John Foster focuses on a couple of crucial things happening, that the scene- at least in part- owes its existence.  The first one is the enactment of the Green Line Policy at KAOS- that's KAOS, 89.3 FM, Olympia- a game-changing move making it against the rules to play any less than 80% independently released music. That had a huge impact on a lot of creative people that tuned in. The second is the publication of OP Magazine, a dense zine focused on independent music of every kind, and featured contributing writers like Matt Groening, Eugene Chadbourne, Jonathan Richman, on and on. This magazine was globally distributed from right here in Olympia, and served as a regularly updated encyclopedia of indie music- and where to get it. Basically, it was like a precursor to something in-between Pitchfork and Bandcamp, in the pre-internet dark ages. John Foster was at the helm for both of these endeavors, and he was one of the people I interviewed for the Olympia Music History Project, and here is our conversation, recorded in the historic Rockway-Leland building downtown.

Interview with Kerry Jones Of Death Doula. Death Doula's new album Love Spells available on all streaming platforms.   Love Spells is the debut album from Death Doula, a dusky Art-Rock band hailing from Portland, Oregon. The new album was recorded at Jackpot Studios by Adam Lee (Built to Spill, Sleater- Kinney) and mixed by Bob Cheek, (Deftones, Band of Horses). It's being released as a digital download and via streaming platforms by Death Doula Records on October 11. Kerry Jones had a crush on his best friend. Kyle List didn't mind, he asked her to come collaborate at his tiny home studio anyway. By the end of the night, they were in love and had created a demo of “Disembark”, which would be lead single from Love Spells. Three weeks later, he moved to Portland to live with her, with no plan beyond an intuition that the music would take them somewhere. Fast forwarding two years later, they recruited the veteran rhythm section of Keith Vidal on bass (Marjorie Faire, Nyles Lannon) and Adam Kozie on drums (Pollens, Crystal Beth) and adopted the name “Death Doula.” The music they've created shows their shared love of artists like Can, Television, Jeff Buckley, The Cranberries, Deerhunter, Kate Bush, The Sundays and Deftones, while remaining altogether sonically new. After having their lives dramatically reshaped during the pandemic, the members of Death Doula approach music with an intensity that can only come from having spent a lifetime wanting it. Kerry and Kyle have an 11 year age difference. Keith and Kyle have a 22 year age difference. Each member pours their lifetime of experience into performances that place emotion and groove first.“In a world so algorithmized it's numb,” says Kerry “we just want to make people feel something again.” https://deathdoula.bandcamp.com/ https://www.instagram.com/deathdoulaband/?img_index=1

What connects Seattle with Ray Charles, Quincy Jones, and Kenny G? How about the Melvins, Sleater-Kinney, and Foo Fighters? And Sir Mix-a-Lot, Macklemore, and Travis Thompson? If you don't know, KEXP DJ and musician Eva Walker and music writer Jake Uitti can tell you. Walker and Uitti have created a timeline of Seattle's music evolution through the lens of 101 songs spanning 80 years, the culmination of which, they say, creates a distinct “Seattle sound.” In their book, The Sound of Seattle, they highlight notable music and musicians who have ties with the Emerald city. It all begins in 1942 when Washington-born Bing Crosby records what will become the world's best selling single of all time, “White Christmas.” From there, Walker and Uitti explore multiple genres including jazz, rock, punk, riot grrrl, pop, rap, grunge, indie, emo, and more. This playlist, they believe, helped create Seattle's culture. With a foreword by Pearl Jam lead guitarist Mike McCready, The Sound of Seattle is organized by decade and includes interviews with Seattle legends like Heart's Nancy Wilson, as well as sidebars showcasing musical landmarks throughout the city. Seattle has many connections to music, and Walker and Uitti would argue that the city is shaped by them, and in turn, shape the people living in it. Eva Walker plays in the rock ‘n' roll band The Black Tones and is a DJ at KEXP. Born and raised in Seattle, Washington, she comes from a southern family of educators and music lovers. Her Louisiana-bred mother and grandparents have greatly influenced her music, work ethic, and manners. Eva believes in discovering, listening to, and experiencing music as much as possible. This week on the news, Decoy says HELLLLLLO to Sleater-Kinney. Formed in Olympia in 1994, Sleater-Kinney was one of the defining bands of the riot grrrl movement. After releasing seven studio records, the band entered a hiatus in 2005 but returned with full force with No Cities to Love, released in 2015. The band's latest is called Little Rope, released earlier this year. Head over to the band's official Hello shop for shirts, totes, camo hats and music—I recommend checking out this great tribute album, featuring bands like Wilco, Low, Big Joanie, and St. Vincent, who's also produced Sleater-Kinney music in the past. In other news, earlier this week we were surprised to see that Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio AKA Bad Bunny, has joined the cast for the forthcoming Happy Gilmore 2, the sequel to the 1996 original film. The Puerto Rican rapper joins Adam Sandler, and the film is slated to appear on Netflix in the future. And to close: in 1998, Swedish hardcore band Refused released their landmark album, The Shape of Punk to Come, which blended electronica, hard rock, jazz, and other forms. The band broke up not long after. But their influence continued to grow—prompting a reunion. This week, the band announced that it will stage its final tour in 2025, sharing dates, word of an expanded version of their classic album, and news about a tribute album, The Shape of Punk to Come Obliterated, featuring remixes and covers from bands like Zulu, Touche Amore, Quicksand, Ho99o9 and more. Find more music news, podcasts, videos, and fun at WASTOIDS.com.Call us anytime at 1-877-WASTOIDS. We may not be winning the SEO battle, but we're reading some cool books this summer, including the latest from Laura Dave, who has a standard cover treatment for a reason. People are looking for the next one!  Then it's on to ultra-feminist badass Kathleen Hanna (Carrie Brownstein was in Sleater-Kinney, sorry Sam couldn't remember), whose "Riot Girl" is a must read for music fans and feminists alike. Kurt Cobain stories! Next up is a "speculative" novel "Hum," by Helen Phillips, which pulls a switcheroo on you, opening with some future tech, but finishing with a story that's just an exploration of the family unit, aka a "mom novel." It'll make you rush back to the first page when you hit the end.  You know exactly what happens at the end of "Big Time," by Ben Winters, which might not be as good as "Golden State," but is still a tidy little piece of near-future science fiction (what we now apparently call "speculative fiction"). And then we finish up with "The Wedding People," which would never happen in real life, but that's why we read fiction, right?

Festival Season on Roadcase is finally upon us and we're kicking it off from Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago!! For this Part 1 from Pitchfork, I talked to singer, rapper and multi-genre artist, Tkay Maizda and also had a fun convo with the amazing Riot Girrrrls themselves, Molly Neuman and Allison Wolfe of Bratmobile. Tkay has achieved global recognition already in her brief career, having won NME's Best Australian Solo Artist in 2022. She was also nominated for an ARIA award for Best Rap Song for her 2023 single "Silent Assassin."  But accolades alone do not do her justice; Tkay is a joyous human and a tireless artist, and she talked to me about striving to create and perform at the highest levels. We discussed what it was like growing up in Australia, moving frequently from city to city, how she stayed true to herself and her art.Molly and Allison of Bratmobile are back playing live after a 20-year hiatus and are both super excited to be performing again. Having been at the hub of the Riot Girl movement in the early 90s, Bratmobile waved the flag for the DIY spirit and Girl Power. They both talked to me about their fierce advocacy for Women's Rights and for the inclusion of Women in the music industry both in performance and production roles, and talked to me about all the life they've lived since starting up the band over 30 years ago! This is a great episode with these super compelling artists featuring tons of great stories and tales from the road.  Check it out now!!For more information on Roadcase: https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comOr contact Roadcase by email:  info@roadcasepod.comRoadcase theme music:  "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer

While Seattle had Nirvana and Olympia had Sleater-Kinney, Issaquah Washington had it's own great 90's power trio in Modest Mouse, a band of weirdos who had a kick-ass rhythm section with chops for days and a singer/songwriter in guitarist Issac Brock, that had the perfect lisp-ridden voice to convey his stories of suburban America's dark decay with equal measure anger, frustration and disappointment. Their 1997 sophomore LP is arguably their creative peak, each song sounding more vital and urgent than the next. They would go to build a discography of great releases but nothing ever quite reached the consistent heights of The Lonesome Crowded West.      Recommended Listening   Movie Pitchfork Classic: Modest Mouse - The Lonesome Crowded West https://youtu.be/G33AcZzZ0pM?si=oEt0P0pbSMJy4-7t   HHPP Spotify Track:  “Cowboy Dan” https://open.spotify.com/track/5A0iajc7nhlZv9tGDHqZya?si=acfac00ecdaa4f8a   Spotify Playlist:  https://open.spotify.com/user/1298220429/playlist/4gy1wWwypkoFS2lUztvZ44?si=waSq07DBQlq3x9G1_nK0pg   Contact us at:  huntsmanhillpodcast@gmail.com   huntsmanhill.com instagram.com/huntsmanhill https://twitter.com/HuntsmanHill   Our Music manhuntsman:  https://open.spotify.com/artist/7tFBWn0UFkdOEMf67TRD6W?si=vzllkbDwSEmfZFlj02GLRw Academy O.C:  https://academyoc.bandcamp.com/album/academy-o-c   Omertà 68:  https://open.spotify.com/artist/6dfiCa0qTlbPQUrqtIkStS?si=6SCjNtXbSO2xRBDuBKJelQ Mid City Three:  https://open.spotify.com/artist/2LW7wWSHd9bi3n3Q5N8i35?si=aVFU0HdnRzqI1UOTAfc-ig

Sleater-Kinney has long been a safe space for band members Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker. What started as a group born out of the feminist punk riot grrrl scene in Olympia, Washington in the early 90s, has grown into a life-affirming artistic endeavor. In late 2022, tragedy struck when Carrie's mother and stepfather were killed in a car accident overseas. In the months after, Carrie found a respite from her immense grief by playing the guitar for hours on end, and writing new music. Sleater-Kinney's latest album, Little Rope, is in part a meditation on Carrie's grief, but it's also proven to be a triumph for the band. Corin Tucker, who handles the bulk of the singing on the new album, has been racking up rave reviews, including one from the New Yorker who noted that Corin's performance is the most dynamic and flexible of her career. On today's episode, Bruce Headlam talks to Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker about their intimate recording relationship, and how their sometimes opposing approaches to creative work complement one another. They also talk about the matriarchal nature of the early Olympia music scene, and why they wanted their new album to sometimes sound gross and obnoxious.
