Dr. Larry R. Kaiser, MD, FACS, FCPP, President and CEO of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia discussed the organization, the oldest and most distinguished private medical society in America, and its public spaces, the Mutter Museum and Benjamin Rush Medicinal Garden. The College, founded in 1787 by 24 prominent Philadelphia physicians, including Dr. Benjamin Rush, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, is an elected Fellowship organization of over 1,000 physicians, scientists, scholars, and community leaders committed to making meaningful contributions to patient care, public health, and advancing medical knowledge and education. Today its mission is to serve as a trusted educational resource and to further the understanding of health and disease for the betterment of society. The college is also a major resource center to scholarly research into medicine and its history, with the Historical Medical Library and its collection of rare books, medical journals and manuscripts. Dr. Kaiser discussed his biggest initiative, strengthening the Fellowship, building its membership and engagement, creating a Fellows Hub and increasing participation in the different ‘Sections’ devoted to special interests. He also spoke about the College’s outreach programming to local schools and educators, creating STEM and other curricula to encourage the next generation of physicians, scientists and researchers. We discussed the Mutter Museum, which shares stories of medicine and public health through incredible collections of rare books, archives, historical objects, and biological specimens. He discussed its current exhibit open to Museum visitors, Trusted Messengers: Community, Confidence, and COVID-19, which marks the five year anniversary of the COVID-19 pandemic and considers how to build trust in public health. Initially developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Museum in Atlanta, the Philadelphia version features materials used in the development of the COVID vaccine at Penn and spotlights local healthcare workers and organizations.Tickets may be purchased at www.muttermuseum.org. · Exhibition web link: http://muttermuseum.org/on-view/trusted-messengers We also discussed a special library exhibition on view now on weekends in the Norris Reading Room, Medicine and Mentorship: From the Archives. It highlights the many pathways physicians and other healers in the United States have followed to learn the art and science of medicine - as apprentices to other physicians, in private anatomy schools, and at home, using printed guides. The College also produces and hosts The History of Vaccines, an online resource to provide a living, changing chronicle of the compelling history of vaccination. The site aims to increase public knowledge and understanding of the ways in which vaccines, toxoids, and passive immunization work, how they have been developed, and the role they have played in the improvement of human health. The site also discusses some of the controversies about vaccination and some of the challenges, difficulties, and tragic events that have occurred in the use of vaccines. Finally, we talked about membership and the activities hosted by the College and Museum throughout the year. The annual Radiant Ball honors Marie Curie, the first woman to win a Nobel Prize and one of the most important figures in the history of medicine, happening this year on April 25. There will be shimmering green lighting and Philly’s favorite hot jazz band, Drew Nugent & The Midnight Society, leading an evening of dancing with after-hours access to the museum, light bites, a silent auction, and access to rarely seen collection items related to Curie’s visit and work. Mütter's Day Brunch: On May 11th they will host a Members and Fellows Appreciation brunch event at the Museum. It will include food, refreshments, Museum admision, and a 20% discount in our Museum store. collegeofphysicians.orgmuttermuseum.org

Anna Dhody is back for Part 2 of our conversation. What we discuss in Part 2: How the pandemic prompted the Mutter Museum to increase its online presence, leading to a virtual tour that garnered over a million views. A significant event during this time was the donation of a human heart from a living donor, Rob, who wanted to contribute to the museum after receiving a heart transplant. Anna filmed an unboxing video of the heart, which unexpectedly went viral, attracting a wide audience and generating interest in the museum. The success of the heart unboxing led to a series of educational videos about the preservation and display of biological specimens. Anna's videos fostered a community where viewers shared personal stories and experiences related to medical conditions, leading to increased awareness and support. After leaving the museum, Anna founded the Dhody Research Institute to continue her work in science communication and education. The institute aims to increase accessibility to medical and scientific information and inspire young people to explore STEM careers. Anna is developing new video series, including "What's That For?" which invites viewers to guess the purpose of medical objects and learn their stories. The Dhody Research Institute is running a fundraising campaign to support the production of more educational content. Anna emphasized the importance of educating young people to become informed citizens and critical thinkers in today's world. Hey all! Welcome to another episode of Mr. P.'s Tales from the Road! In this edition, we look at a very strange, out-there and rather controversial idea; the concept that an abandoned building holds to the energy of those who have inhabited it over the space of its life, creating a sort of “personality” unique to that building. A “spirit of place” as the ancient Romans would have thought of it. Weird enough? Absolutely. The episode is a little different than most and hopefully gives some food for thought, but as always, tales, some strange ideas and some history (and even a little bit of ancient mythology!) abound, so snag a crispy beverage (adult or otherwise), whip up some macaroni and cheese, listen in and enjoy the show! Orcas Are Attacking Boats Near Spain. Scientists Don't Know Why This Thursday, the Supreme Court restricted the scope of the Clean Water Act pertaining to wetlands, in a 5-4 vote. This could affect the Environmental Protection Agency's power to protect certain kinds of wetlands, which help reduce the impacts of flooding by absorbing water, and also act as natural filters that make drinking water cleaner. Justice Brett Kavanaugh joined the court's three liberal members in the dissent, writing that the decision will have, “significant repercussions for water quality and flood control throughout the United States.” Plus, earlier this month, three orcas attacked a boat, leading to its sinking. This is the third time an incident like this has happened in the past three years, accompanied by a large rise of orcas attacking boats near the Strait of Gibraltar. Scientists are unsure of the cause. One theory is that these attacks could be a fad, led by juvenile orcas in the area, a documented behavior in this subpopulation of the dolphin family. They could also be a response to a potential bad encounter between boats and orcas in the area. Science Friday's Charles Bergquist talks with Sophie Bushwick, technology editor for Scientific American, about these and other stories from this week in science news, including a preview of a hot El Niño summer, an amateur astronomer who discovered a new supernova, and alleviating waste problems by using recycled diapers in concrete. A Famous Sled Dog's Genome Holds Evolutionary Surprises Do you remember the story of Balto? In 1925, the town of Nome, Alaska, was facing a diphtheria outbreak. Balto was a sled dog and a very good boy who helped deliver life-saving medicine to the people in the town. Balto's twisty tale has been told many times, including in a 1990s animated movie in which Kevin Bacon voiced the iconic dog. But last month, scientists uncovered a new side of Balto. They sequenced his genes and discovered the sled dog wasn't exactly who they expected. The study published in the journal Science, was part of a project called Zoonomia, which aims to better understand the evolution of mammals, including our own genome, by looking at the genes of other animals—from narwhals to aardvarks. Guest host Flora Lichtman talks with Dr. Elinor Karlsson, associate professor in Bioinformatics and Integrative Biology at the UMass Chan Medical School and director of Vertebrate Genomics at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard; Dr. Katie Moon, post-doctoral researcher who led Balto's study; and Dr. Beth Shapiro, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at UC Santa Cruz, who coauthored the new study on Balto and another paper which identified animals that are most likely to face extinction. The Long And Short Of Telomere Activity Telomeres are repeating short sequences of genetic code (in humans, TTAGGG) located on the ends of chromosomes. They act as a buffer during the cell replication process. Loops at the end of the telomere prevent chromosomes from getting inadvertently stuck together by DNA repair enzymes. Over the lifetime of the cell, the telomeres become shorter and shorter with each cell division. When they become too short, the cell dies. Telomere sequences weren't thought to do much else—sort of like the plastic tip at the end of a shoelace. Writing in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers now argue that telomeres may actually encode for two short proteins. Normally, those proteins aren't released into the cell. However, if the telomere is damaged—or as it gets shorter during repeated cell replication cycles—those signaling proteins may be able to leak out into the cell and affect other processes, perhaps altering nucleic acid metabolism and protein synthesis, or triggering cellular inflammation. Jack Griffith, one of the authors of the report and the Kenan Distinguished Professor of microbiology and immunology at the UNC School of Medicine, joins SciFri's Charles Bergquist to talk about the idea and what other secrets may lie inside the telomere. Philadelphia's Mütter Museum Takes Down Digital Resources Robert Pendarvis gave his heart to Philadelphia's Mütter Museum. Literally. He has a rare condition called acromegaly, where his body makes too much growth hormone, which causes bones, cartilage and organs to keep growing. The condition affected his heart, so much so that a heart valve leaked. He had a heart transplant in 2020. Pendarvis thought his original heart could tell an important story, and teach others about this rare condition, which is why he was determined to put it on display at the Mütter Museum. The Mütter Museum is a Philadelphia institution, a medical museum that draws hundreds of thousands of visitors to its rooms filled with anatomical specimens, models, and old medical instruments. The place is not for the squeamish. Display cases show skulls, abnormal skeletons, and a jar containing the bodies of stillborn conjoined twins. Pendarvis thought it would be the perfect home for his heart — and more. To read the rest, visit sciencefriday.com To stay updated on all-things-science, sign up for Science Friday's newsletters. Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.

Healing A Divided Nation - Carole Adrienne The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates Interview Series Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates Interview series on radio and podcast. I'm Paul Vogelzang, and today's show is part of our Smithsonian Associates Art of Living author interview series, and we have an excellent program about history, the Civil War, and the practice of medicine…you're going to want to hear this. Thank you so much for listening. As I say, we've got a great guest today, who, after reading her new book, I've been looking forward to for a while and whom I'll introduce in just a moment…But, quickly, if you missed any episodes, last week was our 676th episode, and I spoke to Smithsonian Associate Jonathan Freedland, an award-winning author and Smithsonian Associate Jonathan Freedland, has written the amazing new book, ‘The Escape Artist,' Two weeks ago, I had another great conversation with author Lola Jaye, about her new book, The Attic Child. Wonderful stuff…If you missed those shows, along with any others, you can go back and check them out with my entire back catalog of shows, all free for you there on our website, NotOld-Better.com…and if you leave a review, we will read it at the end of each show…leave reviews on Apple Podcasts for us. That's Pete Seeger from Smithsonian Folkways singing ‘Lincoln and Liberty,' to set the history and Civi l War tone today. At the start of the Civil War, the medical field in America was rudimentary, unsanitary, and woefully underprepared to address what would become the bloodiest conflict on U.S. soil. However, in this historic moment of pivotal social and political change, medicine was also fast evolving to meet the needs of the time. Unprecedented strides were made in the science of medicine, and as women and African Americans were admitted into the field for the first time. The Civil War marked a revolution in healthcare, laying the foundations for the system we know today. Drawing on her new book Healing a Divided Nation, Carole Adrienne tracks this remarkable and fierce transformation in its cultural and historical context, illustrating how the advancements made in these four years reverberated throughout the western world for years to come. Adrienne is an author and documentary filmmaker. She has served on advisory panels for the Philadelphia Archdiocesan Historic Research Center and exhibitions on Civil War medicine and the 1918 flu epidemic for the Mutter Museum. My thanks to Carole Adrian who'll be appearing at Smithsonian Associates coming up. Please check out our show notes from today for more details about Smithsonian Associates featuring author, filmmaker, and Smithsonian Associate Carole Adrienne. We're grateful for Ms. Adrienne's time and her generous reading, again the title of Carole Adrienne's book is Healing a Divided Nation. My thanks to the Smithsonian team for all they do to support the show. And, my thanks to you, my wonderful audience here on radio and podcast. Please be well, and be safe, which I'm telling you each show, followed by my message to eliminate assault rifles. Only members of the military use these weapons. Assault rifles are killing our children and grandchildren in the very places they learn: school. Let's do better. Let's talk about better. The Not Old Better Show Smithsonian Associates interview series on radio and podcast. Thanks, everybody, and we'll see you next week. The Mutter Museum in Philadelphia PA is home to the Death Cast of Change and Eng, the original Siamese twins. These celebrated brothers desperately wanted to live apart. But would a surgery to separate them cut their lives short? A simple black umbrella is on display at the International Spy Museum in Washington DC. What role did this object play in the bizarre assassination of a BBC journalist? During his sentence at Eastern State Penitentiary, mobster Al Capone suffered unstoppable bouts of anguish. Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
When Confederate cannons fired on Fort Sumter in April 1861, the United States Army was comprised of only 16,000 soldiers. Its medical staff was numbered just 113 doctors. And here's another fun fact: taking into account all of the doctors then practicing in the United States, possibly as few as 300 doctors in the entire United States had witnessed surgery, or seen a gunshot wound. Over the next four years all of those numbers would dramatically increase. To meet the unprecedented casualties of the American Civil War, American medicine had to make unprecedented changes. As my guest Carole Adrienne describes in her new book Healing a Divided Nation: How the American Civil War Revolutionized Western Medicine, these changes are reflected “in every ambulance, every vaccination, every woman who holds a paying job, and in every Black university graduate.” Carole Adrienne received her B.F.A. from Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia. She has organized an archive for Old St. Joseph's National Shrine, twice chaired “Archives Week” in Philadelphia and has served on advisory panels for the Philadelphia Archdiocesan Historic Research Center, The Mutter Museum's “Civil War Medicine” exhibit and its “Spit Spreads Death: The 1918 Flu Epidemic” exhibit. She is working on a documentary film series on Civil War medicine and lives in Philadelphia, PA. For Further Investigation You might think of this conversation as a prequel to Episode 252: The Great War and Modern Medicine; the Civil War changed the culture of American medicine, and possibly accelerated the postwar changes in the field. The Great War–the First World War–changed nearly everything about medicine everywhere. We are joined by special guest educator Patrick Kelly on this collaborative episode. Here we'll talk about severe allergic reactions and how early discoveries in the treatment of such led to a revolutionary life-saving technology: the auto-injector pen. Commonly known as an Epipen, this little bit of medical marvel was the culmination of a fascinating story of discovery involving a tropical voyage, stinging marine life, self-treatment on the battlefields of World War II, and many scientists stumbling onto the right answers.Guest Bio: Patrick KellyWith a masters in exercise physiology and a pension for teaching medical history as well as anatomy and physiology, Patrick has created an impressive body of online educational content on the subject. We will one day, hopefully sooner rather than later, be in a place where COVID-19 is in the rearview mirror. When we get there, how are we going to look back on this pandemic and this mass trauma event that the whole world just went through together? There's no way to tell with 100% accuracy. But maybe we can learn something by going back in history to the global flu pandemic of 1918. How familiar was the average person with that pandemic before COVID-19? Why didn’t the 1918 pandemic get more room in our history books? And could COVID-19 be remembered - or not remembered - in the same way? Nancy Hill, Museum Manager of the Mütter Museum of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia joins KYW Newsradio In Depth to talk about the 1918 pandemic's impact on Philadelphia, the US, the world, and why despite its devastation, history seems to have forgotten to record a lot of the details of what everyday people were going through -- and whether there are any similarities or differences to what we're going through now, more than a hundred years later. Welcome to Philadelphia! The city that hosted the Founded Fathers of the USA. In other words, this is the city where the Declaration of Independence (1776) and the Constitution were signed. The reason I like this episode is that, in addition to the usual stuff (what to see, eat, drink, and the culture), we talked about places to avoid. This is equally important when you visit a place for the first time. Hope you enjoy this episode. Use #curiouspavelpodcast to share your thoughts. About Keyla: Kayla Marie is a Pennsylvanian girl who spent five years in Philadelphia before moving abroad to Taiwan in 2019. In Philly, she experienced life in West and North neighborhoods as well as Kensington. In addition to her schooling in Philly, she was a tour guide for summer and always enjoyed showing her friends around the historic city when visiting. Today, she has no plans to return to Philadelphia, but greatly misses the culture, the people, and the creative city. Oh yes, and the food. Find Kayla on Instagram as @kaylameetsculture Mentions in the podcast: Old City -- The main reason people come to Philadelphia is to learn about the birthplace of the United States. In the old city is here you find Independence Hall (where the declaration was signed), the first US post-office, the liberty bell, among many historic treasures. City Hall & The Ben Franklin Parkway -- City Hall, where one can access the subway (or the L, as Philadelphians call it), is a beautiful building to admire in the city with its old architecture. From City Hall, Ben Franklin Parkway leads visitors to many of the city museums such as the Art Museum, Rodin Museum, and Natural Sciences Museum. (Rodin is confused with Rhodes in this podcast!) Eastern State Penitentiary & Mutter Museum -- For lovers of all things weird and creepy, these destinations are the places to go. The Penitentiary is the US's first and houses prisoners before shutting down. Some of the sections are closed off, but the restored areas are a great place to visit and learn more about the dark history of this location. The Mutter Museum is another creepy museum, home to medical oddities and discoveries. Food -- The food in Philadelphia, is incredibly diverse, with tastes from around the world. Visit Baltimore Avenue in West Philly to visit the best variety of global foods in Philly. And of course, we cannot forget the Philly Cheesesteak -- served on a hoagie roll, don't forget to add fried onions to this Philly delicacy -- you can even get it vegan Let's connect: www.curiouspavel.com/links

Anna Dhody, Museum Director of The Mutter Museum of the College of Physicians described the ‘Disturbingly Informed' goal of the institution. The College of Physicians of Philadelphia, founded in 1787, is one of the oldest professional medical organizations in the country. Twenty-four physicians of 18th-century Philadelphia gathered "to advance the science of medicine and to thereby lessen human misery." Today, nearly 1,500 Fellows (elected members) continue to convene at the College and work toward better serving the public. Throughout its 227-year history, the museum has provided a place for both medical professionals and the general public to learn about medicine as both a science and as an art, an entertaining lesson! America's finest museum of medical history, the Mütter Museum displays its beautifully preserved collections of anatomical specimens, models, and medical instruments in a nineteenth-century "cabinet museum" setting to help visitors understand the mysteries and beauty of the human body and appreciate the history of diagnosis and treatment of disease. During the global coronavirus pandemic, FringeArts is pivoting the focus of our podcast to checking in with our artists, our audiences, and our community partners during these unprecedented times. Since we can't gather, we'll chat remotely about how we respond to this crisis, and how the role of art during a pandemic shifts. In this episode, FringeArts Community Engagement Manager Tenara Calem chats with Blast Theory, a performance company based in the United Kingdom that creates interactive art to explore social and political questions. Blast Theory was in Philadelphia last summer in 2019 for the opening of the Mutter Museum's pandemic exhibit Spit Spreads Death, in which they organized a processional to commemorate the victims of the 1918 Flu Pandemic in Philadelphia. Tenara chats with Blast Theory artists Matt Adams and Nick Tandavanitj about the prophetic nature of their project and how art can imagine a different future. Plus - look out for a special Part 2 episode on April 8th with two of the brains behind the Spit Spreads Death exhibit about the role of community organizing and performance in the medical humanities.

Nick McAllister, Executive Director of the Friends of Laurel Hill Cemetery and West Laurel Hill Cemetery, discussed Laurel Hill, the second rural cemetery and first cemetery to receive National Landmark status. Overlooking the Schuylkill River the cemetery was founded in 1836 as a final resting place to famous - and not so famous Philadelphians, and a arboretum retreat. He discussed its founding by John Jay Smith, then four miles outside of the city, and its goals of recognizing the accomplishments of its great men and women, and by default, the history of the city. He discussed Victorian attitudes toward death and the notables found there with their magnificent memorials and then the slow decline of the cemetery's fortunes as attitudes changed and the city, and Fairmount Park, enclosed it. We talked about the Friends founding in 1978 and their efforts to restore the 85 acres to their former glory. Nick told us of the many events held there each year. Tours, concerts, circuses and dramas are offered to raise funds for restoration. Tickets are now available for the annual Gravediggers Ball coming October 18. The black tie/costume ball will be held this year at the Mutter Museum. We talked about the 11th annual REST IN PEACE 5k, October 5th, a timed, costume optional run through the cemetery. Register now at rip5k.org/ Today visitors are invited to walk, bike or walk dogs through the grounds. A downloadable app is available to create your own tour or you can get info and a map at the gatehouse. The cemetery is open every day. For more information about the cemetery and its residents visit thelaurelhillcemetery.org. This is part two of a story we started last year about a remarkable woman named Carol Orzel. Carol was 59 years old when she died from a very rare bone disease. Her last wish was for her body to be donated to the Mütter Museum -- so scientists could study her skeleton and learn more about the disease that killed her. KYW reporter Mark Abrams (@MAbramsKYW1060) is back on the podcast today to tell us how Carol's wish was fulfilled. You can hear the first part of the story wherever you get your podcasts (it's episode #37), or at kywnewsradio.com. Read more about Carol Orzel on kywnewsradio.com. To find out more about the Mütter Museum, check out their great website at muttermuseum.org. Find out more about the great work done by Skulls Unlimited at their website, skullsunlimited.com. Remembrance photos of people who have passed away from FOP can be found at ifopa.org. Carol's photo is there too. Part one of the story of Carol Orzel originally aired in August of 2017. We're re-airing the episode today because part two is up next! Carol Orzel had a very rare bone disease. It's called Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva, or FOP. It's a condition she shared with only about 800 or 900 people around the world. And when Carol died, she had a request: she wanted her skeleton to be displayed in the Mütter Museum in Philadelphia. Mark Abrams (@MAbramsKYW1060) joins the podcast to talk about the life, death, and legacy of Carol Orzel. Check out the article Mark wrote about Carol: CLICK LINK For more about the Mütter Museum, head to muttermuseum.org. Philadelphia is home not only to the most recent Sawbones live show, but also one of the world's most unusual museums -- The Mutter Museum -- a collection of medical oddities and anatomical specimens. But this is no freak show, this is an unflinching, educational look at the disturbingly beautiful and beautifully disturbing side of medicine. This is the Sawbones promised land.
