A unique look at the artists that bring our favorite beers to life through their artwork, labels and design. This beer agnostic project will feature a new artist each week and explore their process, how they teamed up with the brewery and learn a little bit more about their story. Join us on this unique adventure into the Craft Beer industry.
As we start to open to the idea of getting back to normal this year it makes me think of all of my favorite places and Chicago is near the top of the list. It's a city that makes me smile realizing I have only scratched the surface. And for me Pipeworks is one of the beers that remind me of those adventures. We catch up with the man who brought Ninja v Unicorn to life to learn what he has been up to stay together during all of this time with his family, the band he is playing in and some of his most recent projects. The man with the beard is a genuine good dude who is appreciative of all he has and the work that he is doing in following that dream. Jason is good people and I think you will enjoy our catch up and learning what's next for Ink and Lead Designs. I can't wait to get back to hanging with friends and beers in 3D!! Sooner than later, that's for sure. Be safe.
For this Episode we literally go back to where it all started and the man himself, Dan Blakeslee. Dan is responsible for two of the most iconic labels in craft beer and some of the early inspirations for the podcast and project - The Alchemist's Heady Topper and Focal Banger. Dan has been an active part of our evolution and growth and it means a lot to us. From Episode 1 to appearing at two of our events. Summer '17 at Kehler Liddell Gallery in New Haven, CT and Hubbub in Bridgton Maine. Not only is he a great artist and human, he's a storyteller and musician. He performed at both events and even brings some music to this episode. He's one of the good guys and a beautiful soul. Dan recently lost his brother and we want to dedicate this episode to him and his memory. I wish I could have given him a hug and let him know he's in our hearts. A great episode that puts it all in perspective to see how far we have come together.
This week's episode we catch up with the gig poster guru and music fan after my heart, the amazingly talented and trippy artist Matt Leunig. A lot has changed since we last spoke back for Episode 44. Matt now lives in the Atlanta area, previously he was in San Francisco and he is also full immersed in doing the dad thing and crushing it. Fun fact is that because of Matt we have these create episode album covers. When he created the one for his original episode my mind was blown and thanks in huge part to Zac Brady, they are now a staple of the project. One of the nerdy reasons I wanted to have the early guests back is so that they could get the proper album cover artwork.
We catch up with the machine David Paul Seymour who was part of our first 4 pack going all the way back to Episode 2. David's labels are a key part of the amazing beer and brewery that is Burial - who's got some of the Skillet Donut for me?! So good. From the beginning this episode has resonated with me because of his story and career path from Accountant to Rock Posters and Labels. He did what he loved and through support of family took his shot and here we are today. It is one of the stories about the journey and passion that has resonated with me since day 1. The man loves music and is doing what he loves on the daily with bands and beer. His project Planet of Doom is getting closer to the finish line and I couldn't be more excited for him and the team. It is a true example of hard work and creating something literally from nothing. I look forward to Planet Doom Fest in the future. This episodes are a great way to catch up with these individuals who have impacted my life and made me believe in something that wasn't real and just an idea. The story of DPS is one that I mention a lot when talking with others both on and off the pod and I know it inspires many to go for their passion. Nothing is guaranteed but you also can't live life full of regrets. Check this episode and all of Season 16 on YouTube. Like subscribe and share or whatever else is possible. Be safe.
This week's episode features Daniel Birch and Earl Barrett Holloway. Dan works for Barrier Brewing and Earl with KCBC and they are big supporters of each other which I love. Each of them have their own unique style and are key to the branding of their respective breweries which is awesome. We have had the opportunity to hang together on a few occasions and were even featured on the other side of the mic from Heritage Radio Network. This episode is a virtual hang and a lot of fun. We shared the stage and support each other while catching up and checking in on each other's sanity and how we are all coping with this. The dynamic was as close as we could get to hanging out but was genuine and real and felt normal. Learning about each other's schedules and projects as well as a little discussion on things we want to do in the future.
Mr. Matthew Ryan Sharp is good people. We connected over hard work and passion a few years back and have stayed in contact and he might even call me his friend. His style and attention to detail amazes me and knowing how focused he is on it all being hand-drawn and aligned with his vision makes them even more impressive. I had the pleasure of hanging in Cincy at Rhinegeist with him and @warnick back in 2019 which seems like years ago. We ate (one of the best chicken sandwiches!!), drank and laughed. It was magical. A little over a year ago a horrific accident included lightning striking his home and causing it to burn down and lose so much of his work and possessions. Thankfully no one was hurt physically but the rebuilding process is ongoing and something that we talked about in the episode. He's honest and genuine and a huge supporter of mine. On the surface, you may judge him since he is tattoed from ass to elbow, but please don't. He's a kind and genuine soul who loves his family and friends. Enjoy this episode and get to know what my friend is all about. Don't forget to like and subscribe on Youtube. That's what all the kids say so I am working that pitch into our commentary.
This week's episode features artist and designer Sarah Hedlund who works for Toppling Goliath Brewing Co. We catch up with her and life at the brewery during the pandemic. She shares how they learned some things and made changes to process and events for the future, finding a positive during a tough time. We talk about the virtual phenomenon that was her RBG VOTE graphic that was everywhere. It was a fantastic thing to see from the outside so getting the inside story was exciting. This episode is an upbeat and positive conversation that is honest and relatable for so many of us.
This week's featured guest is one of our long time friends of the podcast, Dean McKeever. It was great to catch up with Dean on the podcast and update everyone on Keever Glass and the plans for the future.Keever has become a household name with the labels he has done for Tree House and Vitamin Sea, but there is also Batter Steele and several others. Dean is good people and passionate about their craft and creating his own style and spot in the hypercompetitive space that is craft beer. I would argue that Keever is pretty close to a household name for the craft beer world.

This week's featured artist is Craig Gilbert of New England Brewing Co. Craig is a great man and friend of the podcast from the jump. We have featured his work at both of our CT events too. He is a staple of the #CTBeer scene and hanging in 3D has been missed during all of this. This season we go back to the beginning of the project and catch up with some of our earliest supporters and guests. Craig and I reminisce about our in person interviews, the growth of NEBCO and just laugh and catch up. It has been too long and sharing his smiling face with everyone via our video recording for YouTube is another way this season is special for me and so many of us.
This week's featured artist is photographer and all around good human, Melissa Jones. She is the eye and vision behind 'Beauty of the Beer' one of the great perspectives and celebrations of beer and the experience that brings us all together. I met her a few years back and am glad to call her a friend. I have long been a fan of her work and the moments she captures with it. Her photos allows you to feel like you are there in the moment without telling you the story and allow you to escape and wonder what your adventure would be in that moment. We need those moments or escapes now more than ever and if you haven't had a chance to follow along with her adventures and stories you are in for an experience. Melissa has a way to record an experience and moment without you ever knowing she took the photo. Then when she shares her photos you hope that she captured you in a candid moment or flipping off the camera with her hand model @barrelagedbeerd This is our last episode of 2020 as we prepare for a special Season 16 and is a perfect way to end the crazy year. Lets enjoy the time we have together despite it not being how we remember it. This is a unique chapter in the story but one that we will discuss, laugh and even cry about at times. Melissa's photos and stories allow us to remember the laughs and smiles of the past with fondness as we plot and scheme for that first ‘normal' gathering with friends sharing the beauty of beer together.
Going way back with this one. Kent Ambler was a planned guest for Season 6 so we are very excited that we were able to connect with him from his home in Greenville, SC to close the circle and celebrate his unique story and passion. We came to learn of him and his work through a few one off labels he created for Blackberry Farm Brewery and have been following his adventures and creativity for the last couple of years. His story is one of hard work and finding his calling to his craft of wood carving in class and falling in love with it and being really good at it from the start. We talk about how he got his work into galleries, the internet before it was useful and where his everything will kill you series originated. It is a celebration of a career and passion that is inspiring and beautiful to hear. I also learned that woodcutting and this labor of love is the secret to capitalism and getting rich. As we enter the holiday weekend please take a moment to recognize all of those people in your life that you are thankful for and let them know. Everyone of you that has liked a post, sent a message or listened to the podcast has made me a better human and grateful for this community. The idea of this project was born around this time four years ago and here we are with some amazing guests, friends and events that have allowed us to celebrate hard work, creativity and being true to your self. THANK YOU ALL.
This week's featured artist is BEEB. We came to learn of his work through the labels he has created for up and coming DTW Brewery, Smittox Brewing Co. The initial goal was for @habibeaux to be featured on Season 11 but things worked out great for us to connect now and hear what he has been up to during that time. A creative in all aspects of his life and family. Music, art, design, beer, life and even fonts are a part of the conversation. A man who continues to evolve and challenge himself while building on his previous experiences and collaboration. @gpubco is a great example of that, a consortium that brings together and supports artists with a mix hip hop funk and soul. It's a joy to see the passion and appreciation for his hustle as well as those in his universe and who have impacted his journey. Check out this episode and make sure to support Beeb and the Guerrilla Publishing Company. That website is a thing of beauty too.
We are proud to announce this week is the multi-talented creative Julia Green. We came to learn of Julia and her work through the labels she has done for Equilibrium. Now life happens and there have been a handful of guests that we have had slated for previous seasons and for whatever reason we are unable to get the interview locked down. These artists are on a list and I try and reestablish connections whenever possible, so when these come together it brings me extra joy. This episode is a great adventure and insight into hard work, realizing what you want and the importance of community. Julia's story is honest, funny and makes you think. It resonated with me and was very natural and relaxed. Conversations like this reinforce what we have built together here as the #16ozCanvas community and give me all the feels during a time of such distancing and disconnect from everyone. Excited to celebrate Julia, her music, art and much more with Episode 173. It goes live on Friday!!
This week's featured artist is Neale Playing. We came to learn of his work through his good friend and previous guest Darryl De Necker of Beerbliotek.Neal is responsible for the labels and branding for Stigbergets Bryggeri in Gothenburg, Sweden. Episodes like this are great opportunities to connect with creative and passionate individuals around the world. These episodes are special to me because of the reach of the project. When we look at the globe it is joyful to think that we have friends and hosts to show us their home and country all through this podcast. His story is one of adventure, passion and growth. Through love and inquiry he now calls Sweden his home. We talk about him speaking the language, how he ended up working for the brewery and how his style and process has evolved over the years sprinkled in with a little in the right place at the right time. Nature and birds are a common theme in his work and one of the things that drew me to his pieces not to mention the simple yet versatile circle logo, which is part of our discussion. Take this opportunity to learn about a new brewery and artist from another part of the world and appreciate the joy of the human spirit and discovery.
This week's featured artist is the talented Jeremy Backer. We came to learn of JB through the work that he has done for Ex Novo Brewing Co. and his unique textile like patterns that are vivid, creative and seamlessly unique. His love of music to snowboarding scratched an itch that had but he never thought that anyone made the things that he loved and was part of his story. He explored his options working different gigs in breweries and cooking and ended up going back to school and diving head first into design and beer. When you look at his site and his clients, he brings together all of his loves and brings their business and brands to life. How he ended up working with Ex Novo is a great story of seeing a good thing despite initially trading beer for design work and almost six years later he is still with them. A great feel good story and appreciation for life, design and beer. I've been a fan of his work for some time and am excited to share this with everyone. Be safe. Wear a mask.
This week's featured artists is Kevin Dyer. We came to learn of Kevin for the work he has done for Black is Beautiful and Weathered Souls Brewing Co in San Antonio, Texas. Black is Beautiful is a collaborative effort to raise awareness for the injustice people of color face daily and raise funds for police brutality reform and legal defenses for those who have been wronged. The labels and design were created by Kevin in collaboration with Marcus J. Baskerville of Weathered Souls Brewing and the beer has been produced by over 1000 breweries in the US which is amazing. Learn Kevin's story, his connection to the Yankees and his love of painting. In posting about his painting the goal is to get him back doing it so we will see what comes of it. An easy-going laid back designer whose story of teaming up with Weathered Souls is awesome. Now almost 80+ labels later he is busier than ever which is just awesome to see. We celebrate diversity and inclusion especially in craft beer. We believe that Black is Beautiful has helped to start the conversation for a lot of people by using beer to tell a story and bring people together to share it.
This week's featured artist is Brian Steely. We came to learn of Brian through our love of live music and the incredible concert posters he has made for bands like Phish, Mumford and Sons and Widespread Panic. When we learned that he was doing labels and there were for a local CT Brewery, Nod Hill we were beyond excited. Interviews like this are easy because we both had so much in common that we could have spoken for hours. Brian and I had a lot in common and it felt like we had known each other from seeing each other at different shows of our favorite bands. On top of that his story and how he got started working with Panic is pretty epic for a variety of reasons but I won't spoil the surprise for you yet. Music, beer, buds and bud make up his impressive portfolio and it's clear to see why people love working with him. As part of that journey and exploration Brian has developed a style that is truly his own and unique, a monoline style that draws inspiration from hieroglyphics to give it a timeless feel with a modern interpretation. Doing more with less in a sense. We talk about folks using his work for tattoos, how he gets his clients, what it was like working with Phish (guilty here as I love that band and hearing about their process) and his appreciation for a good beer. This episode would have been perfectly framed in person both of us on a couch listening to a little Cornell '77 or maybe my favorite Eyes from Without a Net. He has seen Panic way more than me and I have seen Phish more too, but it all made for an unspoken brotherhood in our love for music. While music is the soundtrack for him and his studio, he takes great pride in his craft and his ability to make each brand and project unique despite not depending on fancy tricks or extra layers. We discover his love of nature and animals and how they consistently appear in his works, which I love. From Minerva to Owls to Eagles and beyond the power of his work has a wonderful ability to do so much with so little, not to mention his comfort with empty space and framing of his work. All and all a great episode. We also talk about another CT Brewery, Hanging Hills and the work that he did with their relaunch and rebrand as well as Mocama too and their new labels. He's a busy dude and we can't wait to share this one with all of you.
This week's featured artist is Heinous. We came to learn of him and his work through our good friend and 16oz Canvas alum, Beer Zombies. This episode is an example of hustle, appreciation and going for it during these tough times. A fellow Philly sports fan, we connected on numerous levels and not just the pain and agony that is the state of our favorite sports team. Through unexpected means he has found a niche in creating work for fans, custom pieces and an impressive list of brewery labels. This former touring musician became a wrestler and now has found his sweet spot as an artist. I have huge admiration for him and see a lot in common as he does whatever it takes to provide for his family and takes nothing for granted with this opportunity to bring people's brands and visions to life with his work. A great episode of hard work and growth sprinkled in with wrestling and inspiration that I'm sure you'll enjoy.
This week's featured artist is S.Y. Espinal. We came to learn of her creativity and calling through the label collaboration with Bronx Brewery. When breweries promote and celebrate art and people it creates a positive experience that resonates with me and makes me want to learn more about all parties. We caught SYE on an IG Live with the brewery and knew that she would make a great guest. The episode is a great honest reflection of self and how we live our lives. We don't have all the answers and putting ourselves out there as artists can be a lot for many. Her story is inspiring, honest and real. This project is really a catalyst to promote and support amazing humans from all around the world and tell their story. Each guest controls the narrative and allows it to go in a multitude of directions, so when someone like SYE opens themselves up as she does with her story and her art it is an opportunity to have a shared experience and perspective. With pride, she has built a community of folks who support each other and have added an additional layer to her message. Doing what's right and being a good person is part of the universe that she is sharing with all of us. Her passion and fight is strong. It includes compiling a list of black-owned restaurants and industry location in the 5 Boroughs (over 250+) to support as a dynamic living public document is just one example. I felt an energy and don't take the connections and perspective for granted. In a time that can be so draining and taxing on all of us (myself at times x 100), it is great and welcome to have genuine connections with strangers and share a moment. Almost all of the guests on the podcast are people I have never spoken to in person. Each interaction other than a short warm-up and a few emails is a shared moment of sharing, listening and learning. I look forward to sharing it with all of you.
This week's featured guest is Kelvis Polanco aka Fuzzed Up Bear. We came to learn of him through the recommendation of the crew at Uptown Beer Society in regards to the labels he has down for Gun Hill Brewing Company. But this is a great example of why I love doing this project. The number of hats and personas he has and wears are vast with each being impressive, exciting and reflective. Learn the evolution of the Bear as an outlet and opportunity to create for himself after hours in corporate life and fashion. It has literally taken on a life of its own as an outlet for his life, society and commentary. Fuzzed Up Bear is honest, funny, tired and real. There is a Fuzzed Up Bear in all of us. On top of that and what might be one of the most powerful and beautiful pieces of the story is his most recent collaboration with Pantone. Yes that Pantone. The Human Being Initiative It was created to engage, educate and empower the public to support social change and the fight against racial inequality and injustice in the United States and beyond. 100% of the proceeds of the sale of any Human Being Initiative products will directly benefit the work of Black Lives Matter, American Civil Liberties Union and Campaign Zero. BUT wait there's more… advice galore for folks getting started on their creative journey and those who have been at it for years. On top of that we talk about family and dad life as well as his newest adventure and what seems to be a culmination of his journey, tattoos. His new project and passion is called which Sick Crayons which from the IG account is awesome. I definitely want to get something from him in the future. This episode delivers and has a great perspective on life and doing what you love. You don't want to miss it. We dedicate this episode to all of the teachers out there who see something in us that we didn't know was there. Thank you!
This week's featured artist is [Andrew Geppelt](http://www.geppelt.com). The awesome story of how we came to connect with him is through our bi-annual [#16ozDoodleorDie](https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/16ozdoodleordie/) with Mr. Robby Davis. His drawings and creativity blew me away from the start and I started following along with his creative instantly. As with many of the artists that we follow (tag who else we should follow below), our hope is for them to one day do a label or something connected to beer. I've stretched and we do reach on some of these - awesome I know. When we came to learn that the was doing labels for Call to Arms it was a no brainer and we connected to be a part of this season.A great perspective and discussion about his journey and life and I think it will resonate with all of you. He is a hard working creative who brings to life powerful imagery with such detail that has really resonated with me. Learn how he rode his bike and setup his remote office in their taproom until they brought him on board and he helped them expanded to cans. It wasn't a sit in but a good anecdote and inspiration for how to bring on new clients. Get that bike out of the garage my creative friends. Our discussion is all over the spectrum but controlled and fluid, which are some of the best episodes where time flies and could become a 2 or three part series. And on top of that he is using his powers for good and some of these interpretations are calls for social justice and police reform and they have moved me. They are beautiful and powerful. The portrait of Elijah McClain is beautiful while gut wrenching and moving. Thank you my friend for these. They mean a lot to me as we discuss on the episode.Be Safe and Wear a Mask!!Episode Links Mentioned:• [Andrew on Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/andrewgeppelt/)• [Geppelt.com](http://www.geppelt.com)• [Call to Arms Brewing Company on Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/calltoarmsbrewing/)• [Call to Arms Brewing Company](https://www.calltoarmsbrewing.com)Follow Us:• [16ozCanvas.com](http://www.16ozCanvas.com)• [16ozCanvas on Twitter](https://twitter.com/16ozCanvas)• [16ozCanvas on Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/16ozcanvas/)• [16ozCanvas on Facebook](http://www.facebook.com/16ozCanvas)• [Beer Kulture](http://www.BeerKulture.com)
This week's featured guest is Michael Semenec from DSSOLVR. Episodes like this are unique because of his role at the brewery as Co-Owner. With each episode we see a unique perspective, role and position in the shaping of a brand and this one is truly unique. I feel that this episode comes at a great time as it is inspiring and introspective on life and our journeys, which aren't always perfect but they shape who we are and make us appreciate what we have and what we have done. Learn about his career and experiences that led him to make the leap in forming DSSOLVR as well as the unique name and branding that along with their impressive list of collaborations around the country has continued to grow the buzz and interest in this newly launched NC brewery. To me their social media game and posts are some of the most unique and creative period and that's sans beer. It is part of the lore and energy of their brand and to cut through in this space is impressive to say the least. A great example of the power of imagery and branding to build interest and excitement. The creativity and utilization of social media platforms like IG to tell their story is one that he has mastered and made his own, but not without trial and error and mastery for years. Video is an art form in and of itself and it has become a great part of the announcements and energy too. You'll be happy to hear more about it and dare I say even learn something. I hope one take away is to say F it and go for it, where it is something you want to do or learn and have been hesitant for a variety of reasons. It happens to all of us and that's OK too.
Season 15 kicks off with Torrey Valyvou, the founder of New Duds based in Burlington, VT. We came to learn of him through the labels he has done for Foam Brewers, but upon our dive into his work and story we quickly came to realize that he is connected with some of our favorite artists, bands and people. Learn about his story and adventures that I know inspired me and I'm sure will connect with you as well. A good man who loves his community, staff, clients and family that has had to deal with being a business owner during these tough times and is coming out on the other side with a great perspective and creating some amazing pieces. One of his newest creations and outlet that I love to watch grow is @squeegeeburger too! A great feel-good episode and a celebration of a good man, artist and dad. Don't miss it.
This week's guest is Sean Bodley, who is a climate artist and label extraordinaire for Timber Ales. It is extremely fitting that we have this episode coming out with the alignment of the release of the Lumberjack Style this week at Twelve Percent. Sean's story is a great one, from his grandmother and her inspiring art to him traveling the country and finding his calling by using his gift to tell stories and evoke emotions. Using his powers for good some might say. The work that he does for Timber has been unexpected and integral in the branding and growth of one of the hottest breweries on the East Coast. The use of color and nature to tell stories creates a feeling and energy that has you waiting for his pieces to move and come to life off the can. From unique paint to outdoor painting techniques learn about his journey, his process, and the tools he is using to share these. A good human who is doing what he loves and taught me a few things too. Learning about climate artistry was interesting and so important that once you learn about it you'll have another level of appreciation for Sean and his work. One with nature.
This week's featured guest is Corey Danks. We came to learn of his work through our good friend Phil of Paired Pints. He met Corey doing a recent collaboration with Stolen Sun Brewing. This episode is near and dear to my heart because of Corey's love of my hometown because of its diversity and multicultural when he decided to come here years ago. His journey is one of self discovery and finding his calling, vision and style that he still continues to evolve today. Part of the journey and timeline is his connecting with the team at Stolen Sun to do their labels and help to support their brand and vision. Also anytime a label utilizes the Grateful Dead and that vibe I'm all for it too, which has me excited for an in-person visit in the future. On top of that, Corey plays an active role in using his and the artwork of other artists to support social causes and business that are impacted by the current climate, Covid and injustice. One way that this is possible is through Mostly Unknown PHL and their fundraisers which most recently raised over $7500 dollars for the Black Lives Matter movement and their quarterly shows at Tattooed Moms in Philly. He's active in the Philly art scene and regularly helps to facilitate drink and draws at Indy Hall too. To understand the path, pain and struggle of people in all walks of life, careers and phases of life is something that we all can learn from Corey and should celebrate. Knowing his own professional pains and struggles Corey has used his network and connections to make it easier for individuals like himself to have opportunities to have a show, promote and network with other like minded individuals to grow. And then to use that network to help support underrepresented groups like BLM to raise funds and in turn make the world a better place.
This week's featured guest is Garrett Morlan. We came to learn about him through one of our favorite things, live music - remember that? He created the awesome concert posters for one of the shows we saw on the most recent Avett Brothers tour shows in Brooklyn. We traced down his work and began following along and realized we had been a fan for some time and loved how he captured his audiences and subjects through profiles and modern day caricatures. Our love of music and some of the icons throughout history are shared and what drew me into his work and journey.Learn how Garrett found his calling and found himself leaving Brooklyn after attending Pratt and his experiences in the big city to head west where he is now situated and working for @bungie. We also talk about the labels and work he did years ago with @bellevue and it should be noted he hasn't done labels for them in the past, but this is a great example of why this podcast / project is bigger than beer and how we liberally use the connection with beer to showcase artists and designers from around the world. From the Avetts to BB King to Jerry Garcia to Willie Nelson and many others in between, Garrett has an amazing way of capturing each of them at different points in their careers, facial hair that make each piece a capture of that moment in time which I love. I look forward to sharing this one with you.
This week's featured guest is Paul Endres Jr. , not to be confused with Sr. We came to learn of Paul and his work with Beer on Earth during a random and awesome encounter at the brewery while in town with friends for Phish back in November. Remember live music?! We sat down at the bar for some pre-show drinks and I noticed the unique labels and asked the bartender who did their labels, which is a question that I commonly ask when the art or designs interest me. She pointed up to the wall and said he does. It was @Paulendresjr working on a mural live and in person. We would exchange pleasantries and later connected to get him on the podcast. A great story of his work. his journey and the upcoming virtual art show @childsgallery (opening is on 7/16) that he is doing. Paul tells stories with his characters and captures their essence and story in his paintings. It is an interview that I think is human, relatable and shows his love and appreciation of his art and ability to tell stories doing something that he loves. There are wonderful and unique people all around us. I like to think that each week we introduce you to someone you may have never known about or whose work was something you appreciated from a distance. Taking time to talk about themselves and their path is one of the joys of the project and is what keeps us pushing forward to bring more content and introduce you to more of our friends.
This week's featured artist is Will Thresher of Tribus Beer Co. We came to learn of Will and his work for a few reasons, one is that we are member of ‘The Tribe' and getting him as a guest was also recommended by podcast alum John Tarka who was featured on Episode 138.
This week's featured artists are Kristen Ganci & Sonny Gamboa who are the dynamic duo that make up Mount Hook. We came to learn of them for their unique labels for our friends Hog River Brewing. Hog River supports creativity and local artists as we have featured before with the amazingly talented Trasloff. Learn how this pair challenges each other while complimenting and evolving together. It's a great fit and story of how these two worked together in a previous life and built a respect and trust for each other that made going into business and creating their own studio, Mount Hook. Find out about the name, their process and how they teamed up with Hog River to bring their cans and walls to life. It is rare to have an opportunity to not only celebrate your own passion and hard work but to find someone who has that same respect and appreciation for your work and that is what we have here with both of these talented artists. Each has their own area of passion but that continues to evolve do to the teamwork and collaboration of the two. It was great to hear and experience and I am sure it will make sure another awesome episode for #CTBeer.
This week's featured artist is Tina McCurdy. We came to learn of her work through her involvement with some of the great up and coming breweries here in CT like The Hull Brewing Co and Phantom Brewing Company as well as the work that she has done over the years at Eli Cannon's. A unique career journey from med school to big Pharma to becoming her own boss is inspiring. Great stories and appreciation for nature, art and beer make this another positive #CTBeer story to share with you. We learn about her history, story and the power of repurposed wood to make unique canvases for her pieces. Also how she landed her first project with Eli's and the many hours spent creating works there. Through her love of cows, beer and being creative we get a glimpse into her process and purpose. An analogue artist who has made her mark quite literally over all the place, Tina opens up and is such a positive person with a great appreciation for life and being able to do what she loves, which is art.
This week's featured artist is David McKie, who has been a long time supporter of the project and we have been a fan of his work for some time. His detailed and intricate work has been used to help build and grow the brand of Speciation Artisan Ales. A perfect blend of sorts. Learn about his story, his process and how he finds his subject matter as well as his process when working with the brewery to create his art. Black and white is a powerful medium and it is his ability to make such a simple palette seem so rich and textured. And on top of it all we can't let it pass without noting that all of these drawings, designs and creatives are created by hand without the use of computers or design programs. It's amazing and extremely impressive. When he's not creating these dark and unique images, he's also an essential worker and his job is no joke (despite my best restraint) and helps him to appreciate his time and use his art as an outlet and an escape. A story of talent and humility that we are excited to share with you all. Each story is meant to share, relate and inspire. This is a great example of why we do this each week.
This week's featured guest is the renowned and knowledgeable Em Sauter who we all know as Pints and Panels. This episode is a great resource and opportunity to learn about beer, the industry and an all around good person. Em has created a unique place for herself in the beer industry by using her cartoons and creativity to inspire, inform and share one of her favorite things in the world, beer. I think it would be a close tie with the Boston Red Sox, but this is a happy story. I can say with confidence this is a one of a kind episode and perspective on beer and I learned so much and also realized there is so much to learn about beer, which is amazing. Her appreciation and excitement to learn and share her knowledge with people and the beer community at large is inspiring and makes it feel less intimidating too. Come join us down the rabbit hole for a dive back in time where we sound like two old folks on the front porch reminiscing ‘When I was a kid…' as we talk about Saturday morning cartoons, how the Gremlins is not a kids movie and a shared appreciation for the Ghostbusters. It's a good one folks. We met up last weekend at Fox Farm for a social distancing curbside pickup. Those beers will be enjoyed tonight as we celebrate this episode, the wonderful people in our lives and people like Em who are good-natured, kind and willing to share their passions and knowledge with the world at large and truly make it a better place. Be safe my friends. This one goes live on Friday. Also Happy 10th Anniversary to Pints and Panels. What a great achievement.
This week's featured artist is Justin Maturo of Erector Brewing. We came to connect with Justin years ago as part of the great #CTBeer Beer Share crew. He and his brother are avid beer fans and collectors who have been great resources to me personally for years. From this shared cellar diving friendship I came to learn of his story and launching of his own brewery, Erector Brewing. And prior to that he started his own print shop, Lefthand Print Shop. We used this episode to connect on his new adventure which has him splitting time between CT and Vermont while he works with Snow Republic Brewery. Justin shares his story and passion for art, creating clothes and his current love of patterns in his designs. Episodes like this are great and also tough because they are natural discussion that would have definitely happened in person, but I am glad that it has allowed us to pause and take things into perspective like family and friendship. We dedicate this episode to those who we have lost and have impacted our lives infinitely and specifically to his late father. This idea of those who we have loved and been in our lives impact who we are as people is the theme for the collaboration beer we want to do together ‘Souls of the Trees'. I can't wait to work together and bring it to life. Enjoy each day and use this time to look at the positives in life and that includes all of you, all of us. Be safe.
This week's featured artist is Alex Ponce. We came to learn of Alex through his designs for one of the more iconic brands in beer, The Bruery. Working a dream gig at his favorite bruery (sorry Dads love puns) is a great story from being a Preservation Society member to their Lead Designer. Also the way that we came to learn of Alex is an awesome story which you will have to enjoy and appreciate the purity and genuine nature of it. Andy is a passionate designer, gym rat and beer lover. He believes that good beer should be shared amongst friends and enhance the experience which I agree with 100. Learn about his side hustle @hopfeed and what inspired him to create his own beer inspired clothing line.
This week's featured artist is Mathew Mayes who we came to learn about through his work with Black Lung Brewery. Mat is an interesting person who wears many hats from Father to Vet to Activist to Tattoo Artist to Label Maker and several in between. To say he has a few different stories to share with you would be an understatement. A passionate laid back honest creative probably wouldn't fit well on a business card, but is just a quick high level overview of this week's guest. As we ramp up for primary season, learn about Matt and his story and why he does what he does. I know you will be as impressed as I was with him and also get to learn about the story behind one of the more unique breweries in the country - Black Lung.

Nerd fun fact we are hoping to be able to interview and artist from all 50 states as part of our project goals. We came to learn of A-A-Aron's work through his labels and creations for Indiana City Brewing Company. On top of that he is a popular requests from artists and fans which makes our lives a lot easier especially from 16oz Canvas alumni Joey Potts. Learn about his story, his passion and how he used these to create RONLEWHORN Industries. His Illustrations are special and the foundation for a lot of his label work, plus his exploration in creating fonts and murals. On top of that he is the founder of the Craft Brew Doodle Crew which is one of the most unique and creative ways to bring artists together to create unique pieces TOGETHER plus the evolution to turn them into a unique series of labels and designs for Indiana City Brewing Company. On top of the interesting story and insight into gig posters, the power of typography and his magic abilities to find more than 24 hours in a day, we also have another first that is more of an embracing one for me. Happy Hallmark Day to you and yours. Today won't be the first day or the last day you know how important you are to me, this project and our community. Let those you love know it everyday. You know time is long And life is short Begin to live While you still can
This weeks featured artist is the amazingly talented photographer Eli Traks. We came to learn of her by the amazing and exciting photographs that she has shared with the craft beer scene in recent years. Learn her story, how she honed her craft working for two unique and creative brands what objects make the best splashes and our shared thoughts on anyone with a phone being a photographer. Her unique and creative approach to product photography has resonated with so many of us. Join us as we learn about her adventures, #WCcansW and how she ended up in her current role @turningpointbeer. A hard working and passionate creative who shares some behind the scenes insight into process and how she brings some of these pieces to life. You have to stick around for the splash insights! As this project evolves our fascination with photography and all levels of creativity has increased and Eli is a huge part of that since her early @aslin photos broke on the scene. We reveal a little secret of one of our plans and hopes for 2020 too. In the vein of Field of Dreams, if you mention it randomly on a podcast it will happen. Fun Fact: her name is pronounced E-Lie not El Lee. Boom. #TheMoreYouKnow
This week's featured artist is Sam Kelly. We came to learn of Sam and his design work through the labels he has down for CT's own Athletic Brewing Co. as well as being a member of the great team at Fair Folk. We caught up with Sam during Dryuary to talk about the success of the brand, how he created the logo and labels and his journey from ballplayer to designer and a few stops in between. A positive and student of the craft, Sam shares his adventures and experiences that helped him to land where he is today. He shares how his interview at Fairfolk ended up being a late night with a few pints in between, but we won't want to spoil the whole thing for you. A laid back and an introspective episode that perfectly ends Dryuary and gives great insight into his designs. Episode 144 goes live this Reggae Friday. Enjoy.
This week's featured artist is Megan Penmann. We came to learn of Megan and her extensive work for Other Half Brewing . She is one of the hardest working designers in craft beer hands down, having done more than 500+ labels since teaming up with OH. Her ability to meet their demands and volume is amazing in and of itself, but through a style sheet and setup she is able to consistently deliver unique and creative labels that fans of Other Half love as much as their beer. Megan is a positive person who through hard work and creativity has supported one of the most sought after brands. Learn about her journey, passions and even her DJ name (we're on the look out!). To say she is busy would be an understatement and her work is more than just labels which is mind blowing. She's a truly gift to her craft and we are very lucky to be able to share this one with you and feel that during the time of her interview and the number of beers she is supporting daily that she put herself back 2-3 label deadlines ha.
This week's featured artist is Rymie. We came to learn of her through the work that she has done for Rockaway Brewing Company as well as the recommendations from two of our previous alumni Earl Holloway and Daniel Birch. Both of them are huge fans and friends of her and her work. This story is a great one and full of inspiring tales of her passion, belief in herself and murals to name a few. The choices and paths we go down help to shape our story and where we are today and this one is no different. Learn about her process, her taste in music and what she has planned for 2020 - murals!! The New York beer community is an amazing one and has been so kind to us, showcasing some of the many faces that are doing incredible work is a joy of the project. Excited to see what the new year brings and I am confident that Rymie and her work will be at the forefront of the evolution and growth of the Rockaway brand. "We are all WIPs"
This week we kick off the decade with artist Nick Wroblewski. Nick is a woodcarver based in Minnesota who we came to learn from his work with Earth Rider Brewery. This is another first for us and we are very excited to share this one with you as we discuss the art of woodcutting and the utilization of techniques and philosophies from East & West. We use the opportunity to ask a lot of introduction to woodcutting questions and Nick does an amazing job humoring me and explaining things in a way that makes you appreciate the beauty of his work and the art. Stories of how he came to love and hone his craft, how he shares his studio with his children on Friday (one of the most beautiful pictures on his feed that you need to see), love of nature and so much more. A great way to start off the year by learning about something new, sharing a love and passion and feeling the joy in something I knew very little about before speaking with Nick. The beauty of such a delicate and intimate art form that can't be digitally altered and is not forgiving, we even talk about what he does if he ‘makes a mistake' - no white out, no control Z. I loved it and hope you will too. Happy New Year once again to all of you. A positive and interesting perspective on such a beautiful art form that I feel will be enlightening to you. To the wood crafting community, apologies for all the elementary questions.
This week's featured artist is Phillip LeBlanc. We came to learn of Phil by fate during our annual summer pilgrimage to Maine. He was live painting a beautiful rainbow snake at Bissell Brothers in Portland, which was our last stop before we headed back home to end our vacation. Phil was also be a featured artist as part of The Art of Craft Beer: HUBBUB which took place in Bridgton, Maine at @allroadshub this past September. This make this another first for us here, to interview an artist we have had the opportunity to spend time with and connect with before sitting down for the interview. It makes this more of a celebration and reminiscing over this connection and shared experiences together. He also has done some label work for @timberyardbrewing too. We talk about his live painting turned into a label, his process and what he hopes to bring to the universe with his works. A great artist and positive force that I know everyone will enjoy hearing from for this episode.
This week's featured artist is Ashley Swope from Brooklyn Brewery. We connected with Ash and learn how she started drawing with her grandfather, how she landed her dream job, Roller Derby 101 and what we can expect in the future as part of their new limited series. The labels that @ash_and_ink are making for @brooklynbrewery are truly an exciting new chapter for the iconic brand. They are illustrative and creative and are one of the reasons we wanted to include her and introduce everyone to her work. Her appreciation for art and the support of others is apparent from the get go and throughout the interview. A genuine and positive force that has us excited for the new canvases coming off the line in 2020.
Black Friday Sale: Episode 138 is LIVE where your favorite podcasts are sold (they're free!!) We came to learn of John and his work as we have had the pleasure of watching Tribus grow and evolve into one of the top breweries in CT. If you've ever been to their brewery you will notice that many of the walls inside and outside are covered with beautiful murals which bring a good energy and warmth to their location. A perfect episode for the Thanksgiving holiday and looking at what we are thankful and appreciative of in life as John has a humility and perspective that helps to literally make the world a better place. He shares how he messed up the Tribus logo during one of his first meetings, why he does he what does and some genuine discussions about being a father and what we both want for our versions of Trey. Episodes like this are special for the genuine and raw in the moment connection. We may have spoken for all of 5 minutes prior to our interview and really shared a vibe that was special. Take a moment to look at the big picture, what you are thankful for and what we can do together to impact change and positivity in our local community. Happy Thanksgiving. Thank you all for checking in with us each week. Season 13 video announcement in coming days and 2020 will be here before we know it!!
This week's featured artist is Tobias Lund of Omnipollo. Join us as we connect with this international traveler, musician, and artist on his adventures, love of music and him having his dream job all while enjoying the experiences of fatherhood and being a proud father. Sweden to San Fran to Berlin and now back to Sweden is a great path filled with perspective, experiences, and adventures. A very open-minded and creative individual who has a persona that is full of life and Mother Nature. We got him to take a break from creating new music, forage for shrooms and take time to get weird with us. This connection has me more excited for the future 3-D or maybe a new level of dimension interaction with Tobias. It is sure to be a vivid and beautiful trip.
This week's featured artist is Ken Weaver of Massive Potions. A unique interview with writer turned illustrator and comic book creator. Ken has been involved with the beer scene for longer than I am allowed to share with you. Learn about his career, his adventures and what gave him the guts to make the right turn to create Massive Potions. A fun conversation where we discuss his most recent judging experience at GABF, how a beer category can not have a gold medal winner, who the people are in his made up post apocalyptic universe and what he uses for his inspiration for their adventures. We recommended that they go on an award winning beer podcast in a future episode (I know we haven't won any awards but this thing takes place in the future and a boy can dream!!).
