** JOIN THE NEW FACEBOOK GROUP: https://www.facebook.com/groups/802347208310205/ ** By "new," we mean "their first album came out in 2015 or later." Chad Mitchell, maybe my "best new music friend" if you know what I mean by that, joins me to talk through each of our top 10 "new" emo and/or punk bands. I chose to be vulnerable and selected mine entirely based on the total number of Apple Music plays they have in my library. Don't judge me! There was some confusion as to whether or not hardcore bands count -- I thought so, but probably had already told Chad they didn't, so we will need to do a top 10 new hardcore bands episode later, I guess! Artists discussed today include Hot Mulligan, PUP, Beach Slang, Pool Kids, Turnstile, Oso Oso, and more. Former 97 Rock morning producer Steve Tripi joins "Tim Graham And Friends" brought to you by CTBK to discuss his career shift from radio, his fleeting shot as Beach Slang's drummer and how much he hated being a paperboy.
Today I talk again with Jesse Short about his time in Weston and the allegations brought up against James Alex of Beach Slang by manager Charlie Lowe.
On this solo episode I talk a lot about mental health. My personal struggles of not being able to do the healthy things I love to do because of the pandemic & how that’s weighing me down. I spend most of the episode talking about the fallout of the band Beach Slang after the band’s manager Charlie Lowe made allegations of mental abuse & the circumstances that led to front man James Alex checking into an inpatient facility after attempting to take his life. We had the pleasure of interviewing Social Animals over Zoom video! In July, Social Animals shared a new track “Something to Keep Me Awake” via Rise Records. Recorded pre-COVID-19 at Chris Carrabba’s home studio (Dashboard Confessional), the track is eerily fitting for this time; a time when each day feels like a struggle and each news bulletin stokes a fire of desiring change, of protest, of restoring faith in humanity. The accompanying video shows footage of the band on the European leg of their tour with Ash which was cut short due to the current crisis along with their North American tour with Beach Slang. Stream “Something to Keep Me Awake” HERE and watch the video HERE.“It’s hard to watch the news today without a Xanax bar. We recorded ‘Something To Keep Me Awake’ with our friend Chris Carrabba in his home studio, and he adds some anger through his backing vocals throughout the track. It’s fitting because if you’re not angry right now, you’re not listening. Every morning when I wake up in this strange new world we live in, I have to find new ways to stay motivated and keep myself awake. It’d be easier to sleep through it. But that simply isn’t an option. So we’re not going to ‘wait until this blows over’ to share this with you because it shouldn’t just blow over. We need to sit with our situation and find out what really matters to us and how we can help. Stay safe out there.” Dedric Clark (vocals, guitar)The band has stayed active during quarantine, writing new music and curating performances for live streams on Earmilk, Bandsintown, Dork’s Homeschool Festival, and more. Prior to their European tour with Ash, Social Animals spent time touring the US with label-mates Angels & Airwaves and they released a string of critically acclaimed singles - “Bad Things,” “Best Years,” and “Get Over It” - via a limited edition 7” this Spring to widespread praise from Billboard, Flaunt, American Songwriter, Sirius XM’s Alt Nation, The Current, Triple J, Clash, Dork, Upset, and more.Social Animals’ new single “Something to Keep Me Awake” is available to stream HERE via all DSPs and you can watch the video HERE. Hello and welcome to REPLY ALT, the world’s only and therefore greatest email newsletter about music. Sometimes I use this newsletter’s built-in podcast feature. (Please see previous episodes with Chris Farren, Lauren Denitzio [Worriers], Todd Taylor [Razorcake], and Jenny Owen Youngs.) And today I’m once again taking a crack at it with a new episode, featuring an interview with Sarah Tudzin of Illuminati Hotties. (Also, I submitted the podcast to all the services so you should maybe hopefully be able to listen on Sportify/Arple Music, etc.)This episode was recorded at Razorcake studios in Los Angeles. This is a no-brainer but subscribe to Razorcake if you don’t already, ya dinguses! Punk rock journalism delivered right to your doorstep. Comics and interviews and record reviews and ink that smears on your fingertips. Can’t beat that! Also, subscribe to REPLY ALT. Written features! Ramblings! Podcasts! Original photos of your favorite artists! In your inbox with semi-regular frequency! You can get a free subscription or opt for a paid one at a measly $5 a month which immensely helps me out. Thanks! In November of last year, a series of tweets from the band Adult Mom aired out some grievances with their indie label, Tiny Engines, accusing them of being delinquent on royalty payments and being unwilling to relinquish ownership over the masters of their albums. The label, which had served as home to Beach Slang, Cayetana, and Mannequin Pussy, went dark after that. As of writing this, they haven’t published any news on their website since November 5, and the last time they were active on Twitter was November 7, when they retweeted a performance from one of their promising young acts, Illuminati Hotties.Illuminati Hotties mastermind Sarah Tudzin watched all of this label drama unfold and thought to herself: Oh fuck. She had been working on a record for a year and a half, intended to be released as her second LP of a two-album contract with Tiny Engines, and was understandably skittish about handing it over to a label whose future had a big fat question mark hanging over it. So, she put the record on the shelf and got to work making what she calls “a decoy record.” The result is Free I.H.:This Is Not the One You’ve Been Waiting For, an album she made, start to finish, in three weeks. Tudzin, a studio engineer, threw every trick she knew at the project, taking influence from everything from Black Flag to Cardi B. Free I.H. features a few straightforward and catchy indie pop songs, for which she’d been known, but there are also endless left turns on this weird, eclectic record. When she listened back to the finished product, she realized she’d accidentally made something she really liked. And I like it too. In fact, I love it. Free I.H. speaks to Tudzin’s studio mastery as much as her strength as a musician. There are noise tracks, calypso beats, some frantic Melt Banana-style rippers, and some good ol’ fashioned punk jams. It’s funny, it’s self-deprecating, it takes a few subtle digs at its own contract-fulfilling nature. It is the Album of the Summer™, and it was made completely by accident.Sarah and I recently sat down to chat (~FROM A RESPONSIBLE DISTANCE~) about making the album by mistake, flushing dogs down the toilet, getting spammed by illuminati conspiracy accounts, the mugshot photo on the album’s cover, and how the two of us are BEST FRIENDS.(Ooooh and it appears my newsletter service has finally enabled Bandcamp embeds. It is, as they say, over for you hoes. [The hoes being Spotify.] OK listen to the album below.)All photos are: 1. perfect and 2. by me, do not use without permission thank you. Ep. 21 “The Longest Day” with Mona from Mon Amie Records to benefit the Alzheimer's Association. In Episode 21 Josh talks with Mona from Mon Amie Records regarding the compilation LP coming out to benefit the Alzheimer's Association which is something very near to both of us. In 2017 my family lost my grandfather Harold to this horrific disease of the mind. Mona was kind and brave enough to be vulnerable to share her families own story which led to the creation of this album “The Longest Day - A Benefit for the Alzheimer's Association” where 100% of the proceeds go to the association. The album features music from Beach Slang, Moby, New Order and many more. We are beyond honored to bring this powerful discussion to our audience. ⚠️ Trigger warning this episode is very personal around this topic however we take a very positive approach to the discussion. Just want everyone to be aware. ⚠️

I consider the February new release episode of The Ledge to be the first real episode of the year. Sure, the January show had quite a few 2020 releases but it was dominated by 2019 leftovers. This episode, with a few exceptions, are the fruits of the new year. This show features quite a few of the first major new albums of the year, such as the latest by Beach Slang, The Supersuckers, and Drive-By Truckers. There’s also a great musical twist with the new Black Lips album, and a few single releases by bands such as Twin Peaks. The real highlight of the broadcast, however, may be this month’s Rum Bar Records set. This is a label that’s on a roll, with a crowded release schedule that’s as strong as ever. There’s also a new home for The Ledge favorites The Forty Nineteens, who now find themselves on a fabulous up and coming power pop label, Big Stir Records. I’m hoping for more great music from that company in the future. After listening, please go purchase those tracks you enjoy!

The annual Live Ledge Christmas show is always a lot of fun. It’s always a bit surprising how many great rock and roll holiday songs and albums are released every year, and 2019 is no exception. Despite a dreary year in almost every aspect of our lives (politics, social issues, etc.) somehow all of these artists are able to garner some sort of tune perfect for the time. Some are traditional “good will to all” songs, but others actually insert a bit of snark that reflects these troubled times. This episode is highlighted by singles and albums by artists such as Alice Bag, Angry Snowmans, Beach Slang, Los Lobos, and many others. There was also a plethora of compilations put out this year, most notably a special Merge Records release that was initially sent out exclusively to their 30th anniversary record club subscribers. After listening, please go purchase those tracks you enjoy!

Our guest for episode 13 of our second series is the musician, James Alex. James is best known for his work with the punk rock band, Beach Slang, based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the US. They've released two studio albums - as well as one under the name Quiet Slang - with another on the way in the early part of 2020. James is, unsurprising, a massive Elliott Smith fan. In this interview, he talks about his at times academic approach to understanding Elliott's lyrics, as well as the impact his chosen song pick has had on his life. Following the chat with James, we have a listener pick from Matt Tregortha from Birmingham in the UK. Hope you enjoy it.
