ONCE UPON A GENE - EPISODE 120 What Happens Now - Baby Boy is a Medical Miracle After Being Treated for Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1 with Kathryn Alexander Kathryn Alexander joins me for a part two segment to further discuss her unique rare disease experience. Through newborn screening, her son Connor was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). It's one of the five percent of rare diseases that has a treatment and her son is among the youngest to receive it. She highlights the fear, isolation and guilt she feels as she moves beyond treatment. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS How did Connor's diagnosis and cure affect you emotionally? While you think you'd be relieved and thrilled to have a treatment so you could go on about your life, that wasn't my experience. He's living pre-symptomatically and he's able to do things that other children with his condition can't do, which is amazing. His therapy could last his whole life, but it also potentially couldn't. There are so many unknowns that it leaves me a nervous wreck and I don't have a sense of relief. I feel scared, confused and extremely isolated because no one else is in the position that I am. I also feel a lot of guilt that Connor received treatment when so many other children haven't. What advice do you have for parents who feel separated from the rare disease community? I like to practice the four A's- acknowledgement, acceptance, action and assessment. I think you have to abandon your definition of acceptance and redefine it for yourself. For me, acceptance is understanding something is true, it happened and it exists. Taking action helps me to feel like I'm making a difference, which helps me grieve, process and feel like I'm part of something even though I don't have a community of people around me who share my experience. This has helped me to make connections and has helped me in general. ONCE UPON A GENE - EPISODE 119 One of the Youngest Children to be Given Treatment for Spinal Muscular Atrophy I with Kathryn Alexander Kathryn Alexander is the mother of three kids and her rare disease story starts when she gave birth to twins and a newborn screening on her son came back positive for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). It's one of the five percent of rare diseases that has a treatment and her son is the youngest to receive it.  EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS Can you tell us about your family? I am a mother of three little ones. I have a son named Jack who is 4 years old and twins who were born the first day of the pandemic lockdown in 2020. My twin son, Connor, was diagnosed with SMA Type 1 through newborn screening.  Did anyone educate you on opting into newborn screening? I didn't know that newborn screening existed or that my son was getting screened. No one talked to me about the newborn screening for all these rare diseases or the treatments that exist. Getting the screening is important because if you get a diagnosis and begin treatment right away, your child has the best chance for successful intervention. What do you hope to accomplish through sharing your story? I want Connor's story to help other people to understand the importance of doing newborn screening and seeking urgent treatment. There aren't currently uniform guidelines across the country for newborn screening and I don't understand the ins and outs of why, but I'm figuring out how to use Connor's story to contribute to change. I have strong feelings around sharing my experience and it helps me cope.  How did you process the birth of twins, the pandemic, Connor's diagnosis and beginning treatment all at once? Losing someone close to me when I was younger helped me through my experience with Connor because I knew how to cope under extreme duress and I knew how to push and keep going. I keep my focus on the positive in situations and don't sweat the small stuff. Angie Cooper is a 54 year old mother of 3 children. She was born and currently live in Perth Western Australia. She grew up doing Athletics in her younger years making the national championships at 12 years old. She still loves to run and go to the gym several times a week. Angie was diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma and did the Gerson Therapy in 2013. She is a healing hero and has been cancer free for 7 years! Angie tells us today of her journey from being diagnosed with Stage 4 Melanoma in 2012. Angie wasn’t feeling unwell but at a yearly dermatologist checkup after getting Basal Cell Cancer she pointed out a tiny pimple looking spot that wasn’t going away. A few months after being told it was nothing she went to her local GP and he took a punch biopsy and called back saying it was really bad and to come straight in. She had the lump removed and then after several frustrating experiences with doctors, oncologists and surgeons and treatments decided to help herself and found the Gerson Therapy. She flew out 4 weeks later to the Gerson Institute in Mexico and started her recovery. Angie takes us through her journey of how she is still here today. Kathryn and I have been crossing paths for years as I refer my clients to her to get a specific protocol designed, and then with my clients protocol in hand, I teach them how to implement the protocol, how to set up their kitchen, prepare and cook the food, and create this new lifestyle, one step at a time. Kathryn Alexander has worked in the field of detoxification and nutritional healing for over 30 years, and through her work with cancer patients choosing the Gerson Therapy, she has witnessed first hand the fundamental role of specific dietary protocols in the healing of chronic disease. Kathryn has lectured internationally, is the author of several publications and runs courses and training for both members of the public and health professionals to self-manage their own healing program. Definitely get your hands on her book, Nutritional Healing, based on the work of Dr Gerson, and which is the “bible” of the nutritional healer of the future. Kathryn is also an internationally acknowledged thought leader in patient self-advocacy. Her program, Health Commons Ready Reckoner, follows four years of grounded research including a one year teaching, monitoring and research program sponsored by the Australian government. Kathryn tells us about how she came to learn about Gerson, went on to write the new training manual for the Gerson Institute, and about her new course, which helps you learn more about your case than any practitioner could know. We also discuss the mighty liver, how toxins are removed from your body and what a detox truly means. This past Sunday, Hurricane Irene (my middle name, by the way), made her appearance causing widespread power outages. What perfect time to get some knitting done, right? In this podcast episode: 1) We discuss finishing techniques that make a difference. 2) Methods to combat biasing fabric. 3) Making your interchangeable needle tips work for you. I like to multitask. So when the power went out last Sunday during the hurricane, I picked up my book and kept on working on my current knitting project: an upcoming design using soon-to-be-released DungarEase, a spring yarn in a soft cotton/acrylic easycare blend. Usually, if I mix knitting and reading, I stick to basic stockinette stitch. But this particular project features an eyelet basketweave stitch pattern, one that requires me to either watch what I am doing (which I can't do if I'm reading), or count my stitches as I go. So, although it was challenging, I managed to count and read at the same time. They say you should keep your mind active to keep sharp. Now, there's a knitter's exercise for the noggin! The swatch above shows how I inserted eyelets within the pattern, and how the ribs turn into mini lace cables. Below is the sweater in progress (back and left front). The pattern and yarn will be available in December. Cute, isn't it? You can see the button band already added to the left front. Just couldn't help myself. I had to work it out of sequence (although, really, is there a knitting law that says in what sequence to knit sweater pieces?). Since I often design as I go, I like to see NOW how things will look in the end. Even after knitting for umpteen years, I am still refining my skills: I now pick up over one whole stitch instead of over half a stitch (which I've always done up to now). It really makes a neater finish. Old dog, new trick. In the following swatch, each section shows a new version/progression of a burgeoning idea. The swatch, changing from right to left, is explained in the podcast. Note how the lace sections at the top are biasing. After experimenting, we found a way to counteract this: Row 1: * K2 tog, yo. Row 2: Purl. Row 3: * Yo, ssk. Alternating both the slant of the decrease and the position of the yo did the trick. Another lesson to be retained for future designs, and solving pesky biasing. Joyce mentioned a designer who integrates biasing yarns in her beautiful knitwear: Kathryn Alexander. Check out her site. I love her use of color, and how she utilizes the 3-dimensional yarns as design elements. I find that using steam helps in slapping a biasing fabric back into place, so to speak. You can't use steam on acrylic (it will kill it dead or turn it into plastic—not a good look for knitwear), but you can use it on natural fibers. I place a wet dish towel over the knitted piece, and apply a hot iron in a "lift and press" motion. You want to hear that baby hiss! Check out the little t-shirt below—another upcoming design for spring 2012. The yarn used is Pediwick (66% bamboo/34% nylon) which was introduced last year as a sock yarn (392 yards per 100-gr ball). With a little experimentation I discovered that this yarn can also be knitted on a size 7 needles at a gauge of 6.5 sts per inch. Knit at that gauge, this yarn drapes beautifully. A bit of slinky-ness. Me like it! Back in the mid-80's I co-wrote "Sweaters by Hand" (from Interweave Press) featuring a collection of designs for handspun yarns. My friend Rachael Emmons, spinner extraordinaire, spun the yarns and I designed the projects. A fun and educational process. I had never spun yarn before and I got to learn at that time. One of the interesting things when you design with a yarn that never existed before is discovering it's best gauge. And depending on the project, there could be more than one answer. By experimenting, you may find that some yarns in your stash can create a variety of fabric weights. So next time you find yourself in a hurricane, with extra knitting time on your hands, grab yarn and assorted needle sizes, and start experimenting :-) The tip of the week (instead of an actual mini lesson) is this: when using circular needles with interchangeable tips, use the correct size tip on your right-hand needle (the working needle) and a smaller tip on the left-hand needle. Your stitches will slide smoothly into position ready to be knitted, and there will be no more fighting to get them over the point where the cord attaches to the needle. Hélène
