This episode was originally published on July 28th, 2018. Dear Sugars returned to Portland, Oregon, for an epic live show. Special guests Mitchell S. Jackson and Rebecca Skloot shared the stage with the Sugars to tell stories of personal reckoning and answer letters from the audience. To some extent, every letter the Sugars receive is a kind of reckoning, as it's often the letter writer's first attempt at taking account of their mistakes and delusions. In this episode, the Sugars take a long hard look at transgressions of love, friendship, the self and so much more. Mitchell S. Jackson is the author of “The Residue Years,” which won the Ernest J. Gaines Prize for Literary Excellence. He is the winner of a Whiting Award, and his honors include fellowships from Ted, the Lannan Foundation and The Rockefeller Foundation. His new book, "Survival Math," will be out in 2019. Rebecca Skloot is the author of the No. 1 New York Times best seller “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” which was made into an Emmy-nominated HBO film starring Oprah Winfrey and Rose Byrne. Her award-winning science writing has appeared in The New York Times Magazine; O, The Oprah Magazine; and many other publications.

This episode was originally published on May 5th, 2018. Remembering the grocery list, coordinating with the babysitter, making food for the potluck, scheduling a get-together with the in-laws: These are some of the invisible tasks that (most) women exclusively do in their romantic relationships — and the list goes on and on. Like a modern-day Greek chorus, women from across the country wrote in to the Dear Sugars inbox echoing identical inequalities in their relationships with their husbands and boyfriends. The Sugars commiserate with this aggrieved chorus along with Gemma Hartley, the writer who set off a national conversation about emotional labor with her viral article in Harper's Bazaar, “Women Aren't Nags — We're Just Fed Up.” Broaching the subject of emotional labor with a romantic partner can be tricky, especially if he feels as if he's being blamed for the imbalance of labor. The imbalance in Ms. Hartley's marriage began righting itself when she and her husband shifted their perspective: “This is not a problem with you and it's not a problem with me. It's a cultural problem. We have to unlearn a lot of things together in order to move forward." The Sugars Recommend “I Stand Here Ironing,” by Tillie Olsen “The Yellow Wallpaper,” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

Send us a textThis week the Portland-based duo, Wonderly stopped by to discuss their latest album Wolves/ We also talked about the Low Bar Chorale, A new German Opera, and so much more.********Wolves is the culmination of a creative partnership that dates back to 2016. Brunberg and Landsverk debuted Wonderly with a self-titled 2017 collection; the unit continued with the post-pandemic release Story We Tell in 2022 and the covers collection Appropriate 'til Death in 2023. Their film scores have been featured on the soundtracks for the independent films Last Ferry, At the Video Store and other independent features, while their music has been heard as the aforementioned theme song of the New York Times' podcast The Daily and writer Cheryl Strayed's Dear Sugar, as well as on Brunberg's award-winning podcast Roam Schooled.Jim Brunberg was a touring song and dance man for 12 years with the hugely successful rock/harmony/acoustic duo (and sometimes quintet) Box Set, touring with acts ranging from Dave Matthews to Huey Lewis, through the 90s. In 2000, Jim opened a recording studio, turning to the recording and composing world to satisfy his constant hunger for music. He produced and engineered dozens of records for many artists (Storm Large, Kristin Hersh, John Wesley Harding, and countless Portland-based bands) and released a few solo albums before converting the studios into a world-class music venue (Mississippi Studios). This spawned a few larger venues (Revolution Hall and Polaris Hall) where Jim personally built the stages, much of the seating and decor of a family of venues he still co-owns with his business partner Kevin Cradock. Currently, Jim is writing and recording/producing a tragic/comic German Opera, working with some of the classical musicians he has met over the past several years (mostly Oregon Symphony players). The work, "Das Blut" is a satirical, full-fledged production, entirely in German, that takes aim at the rise of a tyrant. It is a nuanced, but completely insurgent take on empathy, power, where our demons come from, and what they eat for dinner. He plans to debut this work, along with a new batch of songs, in 2025.Ben Landsverk is an American composer, singer, and multi-instrumentalist, based in Portland, OR, whose work focuses on social change through music. Hailed as a “prominent Portland composer” (Bloomberg Magazine) and “a unique musical talent” (Willamette Week), he is best known for his work as one half of the duo Wonderly, with musical partner Jim Brunberg. An active session musician, Landsverk has worked with such musical luminaries as Father John Misty, Pink Martini, Smokey Robinson, Van Dyke Parks, Storm Large, and Ruby Friedman Orchestra. From 2003-2015, he was a collaborator and music director with avant-garde performance artist Holcombe Waller and performed at such festivals as Under The Radar (NYC), Festival de Teatro de Curitiba (Brazil), Queer Zagreb (Croatia), Brooklyn Academy of Music (NYC), and Centre Pompidou (Metz and Paris, France).  Landsverk is the founder and director of Portland's Low Bar Chorale and of Voices Unlimited, Portland's flagship choir for people with neurodiversity. He spent over 20 years as a professional choral director and singer, specializing in medieval, renaissance, and baroque music. Landsverk is currently working on his first solo album, scheduled for release in early 2025. *******If you would like to contact the show about being a guest please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comFollow us on SocSupport the show

his episode was originally released on August 25th, 2018. “Dear Sugars, I'm a serial codependent. I've married and had children with two addicts,” begins a letter signed by “Mommy Messed Up.” Over the years, her second husband began to withdraw and stash money inside of old bottles. Now Mommy Messed Up is ready to end their toxic relationship. The only problem is she'll have to disrupt her children's lives for a second time. “I'm fine with breaking my own heart,” she writes. “But how do I break my boys' hearts?” In this second part of our series on moving on, the Sugars discuss how we can release ourselves from our past mistakes. Dr. Harriet Lerner drops in to answer a second letter from a woman who is haunted by her abortion, a decision she laments now that she's experiencing early menopause. Like Mommy Messed Up, she is ruled by her regret. “We have to beware of the stories that we tell about ourselves because we become them,” Dr. Lerner advises. “And a story like the one she's constructed is so narrow and fixed that it's going to edge out all other stories about her past and her present and her future possibilities.” Dr. Lerner is a leading voice on the psychology of women and family relationships. She's the author of 12 books including The New York Times best seller “The Dance of Anger” and most recently, “Why Won't You Apologize? She is an Oregon Literary Arts Fellow and you may recognize her from her viral interview with Cheryl Strayed on the Dear Sugars podcast. Reema Zaman, author and speaker, shares her journey of finding her voice and reclaiming her power after leaving an abusive relationship. She discusses the importance of using language to shape our beliefs and the transformative power of writing. Rima also highlights the significance of living alone and embracing one's true self. Her story is a testament to the resilience and strength of women. In this conversation, Reema Zaman discusses her journey as a writer and the importance of finding one's voice and reclaiming oneself. She shares her experiences of moving to different cities, staying with her parents, and working various jobs to pursue her writing career. Reema also talks about the challenges she faced in the publishing industry and the power of social media in connecting with others. She emphasizes the need for women to support and uplift each other and offers advice for those going through a fresh start. Topics discussed in this episode of A Fresh Story with Reema Zaman: Abusive relationships can strip away a person's voice and power, but finding the courage to leave can lead to personal growth and transformation. Writing can be a powerful tool for self-discovery and healing, allowing individuals to find clarity, confidence, and a new sense of identity. Language shapes our beliefs and self-perception, so it's important to use empowering and affirming language to build a positive sense of self. Living alone can provide a valuable opportunity for self-reflection and self-discovery, allowing individuals to tune into their own voice and embrace their true selves. The journey of healing and self-discovery requires discipline, resilience, and the willingness to challenge societal conditioning and expectations. Finding one's voice and reclaiming oneself is a powerful journey. Moving to different cities and exploring new opportunities can lead to personal and professional growth. The publishing industry can be challenging, but social media has democratized access to resources and connections. Supporting and uplifting women is essential for creating a more inclusive and empowering community. Embracing fresh starts and pursuing what you love can lead to personal fulfillment and success.

English with Nab's Podcast

Do you ever find yourself feeling lost in life? Searching for answers at every turn, only to find a new question in your way as soon as you've managed to answer the last? If so, you're not alone. And if you said no, then perhaps you need to think about it for a little bit longer. The truth is that no one has just the right answers. Not this book, not any book, no one. The reality is that instead of answers, we really only have our own experiences to share and the advice that others can give us. Tiny Beautiful Things, thoughtfully constructed this part memoir, part advice column based on her “Dear Sugar" advice column to help us find the beauty in places that we wouldn't normally expect it to be. She admits that her advice isn't based “necessarily on the right-wrong continuum” but that there should be a variety of factors that go into making appropriate decisions in life. And what are those? Well, they include: self-realization, acceptance, forgiveness, and resilience. desperation, and redemption.

We're closing out 2022 with something new: A Poured Over Double Shot with host Miwa Messer.  Cormac McCarthy doesn't really do interviews — If you want to know about the work, it's on the page, he says. Jenny Jackson and Chip Kidd are part of the team that publish McCarthy; Jenny's been his editor for the last eight years, and Chip has designed McCarthy's hardcover jackets from 1992's All the Pretty Horses all the way up to this fall's The Passenger and Stella Maris, along with the recent reissues of McCarthy's backlist including Suttree, Blood Meridian and No Country for Old Men. They join us to talk about McCarthy's surprising new books — his first since Pulitzer Prize winner The Road (2006), getting the jackets right and more in the first half of this Poured Over Double Shot episode. When a pal asked Cheryl Strayed to take over writing the “Dear Sugar” column in The Rumpus, her first thought was, “Who am I to give people advice? I'd never taken a class in psychology or gone to therapy or any of that stuff. But also, I was afraid specifically to write an advice column on the internet, because it was the age of snark…” Cheryl's open-hearted, non-judgmental letters to readers redefined the medium — and inspired two podcasts, Dear Sugars and Sugar Calling. Some of that work is collected in Tiny Beautiful Things, which was adapted into an acclaimed stage play by Nia Vardalos and is coming to Hulu next year as a series starring Kathryn Hahn (WandaVision). Cheryl joins us to talk about trust and empathy, finding freedom by writing letters to strangers, what she's working on now and more in the second half of this episode. This week, Barb and Michelle discuss ways to redefine and reframe regret, so that we can find peace, happiness, and acceptance in the present moment.   Follow us @MichelleMaros and @Peaceful_Barb and share your experiences with us @BarbKnowsBestPod or at https://kite.link/barb-knows-best.   Episode Notes: Regret can be reframed as a teacher, rather than a negative emotion in our lives. You can only make choices with all the information we currently have.      When thinking about regrets, try to see how you can work with the present moment, instead of working against it. When we really know what matters most to us, then we can actually be in alignment with who we are.     Resources Mentioned in Today's Podcast: Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice on Love and Life from Dear Sugar by Cheryl Strayed https://amzn.to/3Cg36cU
