In 1958, motorists in Elkton, Michigan, were alarmed by the sight of a blue creature with blinking lights and what looked to be a space helmet. Estimates of its size ranged from 2 to 10 feet tall, and mothers who spotted it while looking out the windows of their homes were reportedly worried about letting their children go out at night. The police got involved after a busload of junior high school students spotted it, and it wasn't long before the mystery was solved.In the October 31, 2008, Huron Daily Tribune there is an article (page 5 of the pdf) by Traci L. Weisenbach headlined, “50 Years Ago, ‘Little Blue Man' Shook up Elkton.”  After the introduction in which the reader is asked to imagine driving down a country road and spotting “an illuminated, bluish figure moving very quickly, perhaps even dancing,” Weisenbach reveals that the creature was actually a young man dressed in a costume. He and two of his friends had come up with the idea, and with him in costume hidden in the trunk of a car, the other two would drive around and let him out in various locations.According to Weisenbach, the three men involved were Jerry Sprague, LeRoy Shultz, and Don Weiss, who had just returned after serving in the military. This concept anchors my conversation today with Yuval Avnur, a Professor of Philosophy at Scripps College and author of Why Read Pascal Today?We dive into Blaise Pascal, the 17th-century true polymath genius who believed that a human being is a heart with a belief-forming mechanism attached as an afterthought. According to Pascal, feeling something with your heart is a way of knowing. We get into why this idea provides the perfect lens to view everything from the escalation of political polarization to rabid online echo chambers to moon-landing conspiracies. Instead of getting trapped in those realities, Yuval argues that Pascal offers a way out. He lays out Pascal's remarkably modern advice on how to actually persuade someone: stop dunking on them with red-faced, shrieking facts, and start asking why the world looks the way it does from where the other person's standing. In 2015, a mother sat for an interview with a SLED agent investigating her daughter Sara's death. She later testified that she told him something that changed the picture — that Sara had talked about ending her own life, in the place and manner she died. Ten years later, that interview helped sink a murder case. The agent was David Owen, the same investigator who led the case against Alex Murdaugh.Tony Brueski connects the collapse of the Michael Colucci prosecution to the Brady motion Murdaugh's defense filed August 5, 2026. Judge Roger Young threw out Colucci's indictment in June 2025, ruling the state failed to disclose the mother's account for nearly a decade. Owen testified he was never told. The judge sent prosecutors back to the grand jury with instructions to bring a fuller case.Murdaugh's lawyers didn't put Owen's name in their motion. They didn't need names. The filing demands updated personnel files, internal affairs records, and misconduct findings on every officer who touched the investigation — along with new witness deals, changed statements, and a written promise from prosecutors that nothing favorable to Murdaugh sits in a drawer. It also reaches SLED's files on the Eddie Smith roadside shooting and the narcotics investigation.The state will get to answer, and the likely answer is that this is a fishing trip built on cases that aren't this one. Judge Debra McCaslin hears it August 14, 2026. Alex Murdaugh, presumed innocent, goes to retrial in April 2027 for the murders of Maggie and Paul. 20 years ago on 13 August 2006, Brisbane Buddhist Vihara Inc (BBV) decided at a Special General Meeting to invite Ajahn Dhammasiha, to start a Forest Monastery associated with the tradition of Ajahn Chah in the Brisbane area. The next day on 14th August 2006, Dr Gamini Jayasinghe (President of BBV Inc) called Ajahn Dhammasiha to formally extend this invitation to him, and Ajahn accepted. Dr Gamini, his wife Rukmani, and the community of BBV made a very courageous decision with that invitation, as Ajahn had only 11 rains as a monk, was not well known at all, and lived at Vimokkharam, a small hermitage that was also quite unknown. BBV Inc would go on to sell their 3 acres large suburban property with nice house and granny-flat, and buy the property at 30 Ben Varden, which then would become Dhammagiri. This poperty had no water, no power, no sewage connection and no buildings, except a huge empty watertank (half million litres!). Only through the courage, determination, generosity and great faith of the very small group of early supporters could Dhammagiri be founded and ultimately flourish.
