Kira takes us back to the very beginning — from undiagnosed childhood anxiety and a decade of binge drinking to the fertility journey that included an ectopic pregnancy, two miscarriages, and two wildly different birth experiences. In this episode of The Wellness Effect, Lacey and Kira sits down for full-circle look at Kira's health journey — from her childhood as the eldest daughter, through birth control and untreated anxiety, into the wellness challenge that changed everything, and finally through her fertility struggles, an ectopic pregnancy, multiple losses, and the births of Ellie and Jake.   Key Takeaways: Undiagnosed childhood anxiety and nervous system dysregulation often show up decades later as coping patterns like binge drinking — and healing means going back to understand where it started. Mineral depletion from years of hormonal birth control and lack of preconception replenishment can carry real consequences into pregnancy and postpartum — but it's never too late to start repleting. Trusting your intuition and asking questions (even when providers push back) can change the entire trajectory of a birth and postpartum experience.   Chapters: [00:00:00] - Intro  [00:01:06] - Childhood, Eldest Daughter Syndrome & Family Dynamics [00:04:49] - Undiagnosed Anxiety & Nervous System Dysregulation as a Kid [00:06:33] - Late Puberty, Birth Control & Teenage Acne [00:09:29] - Binge Drinking Years & Coping Through Her 20s [00:10:32] - Meeting Brett & the Wellness Challenge That Changed Everything [00:13:43] - Coming Off Birth Control & the Copper IUD Mistake [00:15:15] - Trying to Conceive & a Rough First Pregnancy with Ellie [00:20:35] - Ellie's Traumatic Hospital Birth Story [00:33:56] - COVID Vaccine, Trying for "Two Under Two" & the Ectopic Pregnancy [00:42:35] - Miscarriages & the Long Road Back to Pregnancy [00:47:06] - Jake's Healed Home Birth, Postpartum & Trusting Intuition Over Western Medicine   You Might Want to Listen: S2E47 - Kira's Birth Story: 6 Hour Labor & Home Birth   Want to Work With Us? In this 100th episode of Unboxable, Somatic Therapist Aléna Turley reflects on the power of deep, body-held belief that defies logic, rational thinking, or even medical science. She shares her four-year journey to conceiving and carrying her third child—after pregnancy loss, a difficult second pregnancy, multiple miscarriages, intense life pressure, alternative support, and discouraging fertility assessments including IVF that was halted due to low eggs. Following a Whole30 wholefood reset and a move overseas to Bath, England, she conceived and experienced a largely low-intervention, empowered birth supported by a doula, midwives, and birth education, and community breastfeeding support. This episode is all about cultivating trust in the body as an intimate companion, seeking support, resting and replenishing, and learning the difference between distraction and an aligned, life-affirming path. This episode is brought to you by Audible, Fatty15 and Z Biotics. Sperm counts are down 50%. Fertility rates are collapsing. Miscarriages, hormone dysfunction, chronic inflammation, insulin resistance, environmental toxins, sleep deprivation, cannabis use, and modern stress are all colliding into what fertility physician Dr. Natalie Crawford, MD, author of The Fertility Formula, calls a growing reproductive health crisis. This conversation breaks down why fertility is one of the strongest indicators of overall health, how inflammation damages eggs, sperm, mitochondria, and hormones, why "healthy" people are still struggling to conceive, and the exact lifestyle, nutrition, testing, and environmental changes that can dramatically improve fertility outcomes for both men and women. Chase and Dr. Crawford also share deeply personal stories about pregnancy loss, the emotional toll of infertility, and how couples can better support each other through one of life's hardest journeys. You will learn: Fertility is a powerful marker of overall metabolic and cellular health Chronic inflammation is one of the biggest hidden drivers of infertility Sperm counts have dropped 50% over the last 50 years Cannabis use is strongly linked to sperm DNA damage and miscarriage risk TRT can significantly suppress or permanently impair sperm production Sleep may be the single most powerful fertility intervention available Women and men respond differently to fasting, cold exposure, and stress Insulin resistance is affecting far more "healthy" people than they realize Environmental toxins and endocrine disruptors are major fertility disruptors Men can dramatically improve fertility in as little as 90 days Pregnancy loss requires emotional support, community, and medical follow-up Follow Natalie @nataliecrawfordmd Follow Chase @chase_chewning -----  00:00 - The fertility crisis nobody is talking about 02:24 - Why fertility rates are rapidly declining 03:54 - Fertility as a marker of overall health 05:14 - Chronic inflammation explained 07:33 - The "walkie talkie" theory of hormones 10:10 - Detaching from the identity of being "healthy" 13:00 - TRT and male fertility risks 17:09 - Why men are 50% of the fertility equation 18:54 - Cannabis and sperm DNA damage 22:01 - Plastics, fragrances & endocrine disruptors 24:48 - Why men need to show up during fertility journeys 32:25 - Sauna use and sperm health 35:00 - Cold plunges, fasting & female hormones 37:34 - Best fertility-supporting nutrition strategies 43:53 - Why men can improve fertility in 90 days 44:44 - Women, egg reserves & aging explained 52:43 - The #1 thing you can do for mitochondrial health 55:11 - Fertility tests every person should know 01:00:17 - Why every man should get a semen analysis 01:04:11 - Should everyone freeze eggs and sperm? 01:09:15 - Chronic inflammation & insulin resistance explained 01:17:13 - How stress directly impacts fertility 01:19:11 - Practical ways to reduce inflammation 01:21:43 - The emotional reality of miscarriage & pregnancy loss 01:26:29 - What to do medically after pregnancy loss 01:29:08 - What "Ever Forward" means to Natalie ----- Episode resources: Audible - Get a FREE 30-day trial and start listening to your next favorite audiobook today ZBiotics - Use code EVERFORWARD10 to save 10% on the probiotic drink before drinking Fatty15 - Use code EVERFORWARD for an additional 15% off the 90-day starter kit Get Natalie's new book "The Fertility Formula"

I'm finally saying it out loud: I'm 15 and a half weeks pregnant with baby three. After two miscarriages, I didn't expect to ever record this kind of announcement, and I definitely didn't expect how complicated it would feel to share it. Pregnancy after loss changes you. It can take away the innocence, replace excitement with vigilance, and make every symptom and every quiet moment feel loaded. I walk through what 2025 looked like for us: drawn-out miscarriage management, the pressure of working and traveling while holding a private heartbreak, and the grief of losing my mom. That combination reshaped how I think about family planning and what I imagined our future “table” would look like. Then a Valentine's Day oopsie turned into a positive test, and I was shocked, anxious, and honestly not ready to trust my body again. We also get practical about early pregnancy symptoms, why this first trimester felt harder, and what helped me feel more supported this time around. From choosing a provider who truly hears me to getting a dating ultrasound, NIPT planning, and the reassurance that comes from respectful timelines, I share what made a difference after a missed miscarriage. I also talk from an active pregnancy and pelvic floor perspective, including using supports earlier so I can keep moving in a way that feels safe and sustainable. If you're navigating miscarriage, fertility, pregnancy after miscarriage, or the messy overlap of grief and joy, I hope this conversation makes you feel less alone. Subscribe, share this with someone who needs it, and leave a review so more active moms can find Barbell Mamas.___________________________________________________________________________Don't miss out on any of the TEA coming out of the Barbell Mamas by subscribing to our newsletter You can also follow us on Instagram and YouTube for all the up-to-date information you need about pelvic health and female athletes. Lauren Nutter: A Six Star, Small Business, Motherhood Marathon Journey

Strides Forward

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 14, 2026 39:23

Lauren Nutter's story has so many interesting threads and I'm excited for you to hear about all of it. First up, Lauren will be running Boston for the very first time, and that has been a goal that she has had in earnest since 2019. Between then and now, Lauren discovered the majors. At the time there were six major marathons, and Lauren decided she was going to run them all and earn her six stars, as it's called. In addition to Boston, those marathons include London, Berlin, Chicago, New York City, and Tokyo. When Lauren crosses the finish line on April 20th, she will not only have run the Boston Marathon, but she will have also completed her six star journey. In addition to all things running, Lauren also created her business Race Day Rangers as part of her running journey. It began with a sticker that Lauren created to help raise funds for her charity entry to Boston in 2020 (the marathon that never was), and that has grown into the business that it is today, which features marathon themed stickers, patches, flags, and more. For this year's Boston Marathon pre-race festivities, Lauren has teamed up with four other women (they're all also moms) who own small running-related businesses to create Brandhaus, which will be a pop-up store that'll be open over marathon weekend, Friday to Sunday. In addition to Race Day Rangers, Brandhaus includes Running with Grace, selling mantra bracelets; Pen and Paces, selling custom name bib kits, shoe bags, and more; TWENTYSIXDIAMOND, selling running jewelry; Running Peas, selling athletic apparel for kids; and Swift Running, selling carbon plated running shoes. Brandhaus will also have a full calendar of activities and activations. Find them at 332 Newbury Street.  There's an additional part of Lauren's story that's important to acknowledge, and I'm very thankful to Lauren for being so open about sharing this difficult part of her journey: during her six-star pursuit, Lauren experienced a miscarriage. Miscarriages are far more common than most people realize, and many people who experience them suffer in silence. Lauren let me know that she wishes people could feel more comfortable talking about these experiences, which is why she's decided to be so open about sharing this part of her story. Miscarriages are a deeply painful yet natural part of the reproductive process for so many people. So, yes, Lauren has been through many ups and many downs to get to where she is today—and so much will come to fruition around this year's Boston Marathon. It has been a truly transformational journey, and she shares it all in this episode. From this Episode Lauren Nutter on Instagram: @marathonlauren Race Day Rangers on Instagram: @racedayrangers More from WRS WRS is on Substack: womensrunningstories.substack.com To support WRS, please rate and review the show iTunes/Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/womens-running-stories/id1495427631 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4F8Hr2RysbV4fdwNhiMAXc?si=1c5e18155b4b44fa Music Credits Cormac O'Regan, of Playtoh Coma-Media, via Pixabay DELOSound, via Pixabay Music of the Future, via Pixabay chillmore, via Pixabay penguinmusic, via Pixabay Ways to Connect and Engage with Women's Running Stories WRS Instagram: @womensrunningstories Facebook: facebook.com/WomensRunningStories Website: womensrunningstories.com

In these two part episodes, I sit down with Margarite, a mum of five living in rural Queensland, who shares the first part of her powerful birth journey. Her story includes multiple miscarriages, a caesarean, a VBAC, and a second caesarean for breech twins, flipping the script at 39 weeks and deciding to birth at home at the last minute — all while navigating the challenges of rural maternity care, long-distance transfers, and feeling disconnected within the system. At 39+2, everything began to shift as she discovered new perspectives and started questioning what was possible for her next birth — a freebirth after two caesareans. This episode lays the foundation for her journey… and in Part Two, we dive into how she went on to reclaim her birth in a deeply powerful way.Enjoy this episode! More from Ashley:The VBAC VillageInsta: @ashleylwinningWebsite: www.ashleywinning.comJoin our VBAC Homebirth Support Group hereLove the podcast? Buy me a coffeeDisclaimer: The VBAC Homebirth Stories Podcast is for educational and inspirational purposes only. Christina Koch is ready to make history. She is one of the four astronauts of Artemis 2 which is set to head around the Moon in the next few days. During her career as a Nasa astronaut, she has spent more than 300 days aboard the International Space Station, and she was part of the first all-woman spacewalk with Jessica Meir. This mission will take her and her crewmates on a 10-day journey, further into space than any humans have ever gone. Joining Krupa Padhy to talk more about Christina and the importance of having women in space, is planetary and space scientist Professor Caroline Smith, Chair of the European Space Agency Human Spaceflight and Exploration Science Advisory Committee and also Head of Collections at the Natural History Museum, and Natasha Carr, PhD researcher at the University of Leicester, who is researching planetary sciences and space instrumentation. Millions of voters will head to the polls on Thursday 7 May for the biggest set of elections since the 2024 general election. Today a group of organisations, including the Electoral Commission, are calling for the elections to be free from abuse. The Commission's most recent research, following the 2025 local elections, found that 61% of respondents experienced harassment or security threats during the campaign and previous research found that respondents who were women were twice as likely to report serious abuse and those from ethnic minorities were three times as likely. To discuss the impact of this, Krupa is joined by Niki Nixon, Director of Communications and External Affairs at the Electoral Commission, and Hannah Perkin, a Liberal Democrat councillor on Faversham Town Council in Kent. According to the NHS, one in eight known pregnancies end in miscarriage. For some women, they will experience more than one miscarriage, and for those who have more than three, then this is known as 'recurrent miscarriage', which affects around one in 100 women. It is a hugely devastating experience for those going through it, and is one that is often underrepresented on screen. A new BBC drama, Babies, aims to bring this issue in to the light, as it follows a young couple on their journey to parenthood. Siobhán Cullen plays Lisa and she tells Krupa about playing the role. They are joined by Zoe Clark-Coates, CEO of the baby loss charity The Mariposa Trust. The countdown to May's Eurovision song contest in Austria is on. As critics and fans analyse all 35 competing entries, it's Romania's song that is attracting a lot of attention. Choke Me is performed by Alexandra Căpitănescu and is facing criticism from sexual violence campaigners. The song repeats the phrase ‘choke me' around 30 times in three minutes, raising concerns that it glamorises strangulation, a practice linked to brain injury and even death. Alexandra Căpitănescu has defended the track, saying the lyrics refer to the feeling of being overwhelmed by emotion and ‘being suffocated by self-doubt'. Krupa hears from Dr. Catherine White, Medical Director for the Institute for Addressing Strangulation, and Lisa-Jayne Lewis, Broadcaster and Commentator specialising in the Eurovision Song Contest.Presenter: Krupa Padhy Producer: Andrea Kidd

What makes one person collapse under adversity while another rises? In this conversation, business leader turned sailor and Sailing Life Warriors founder Dave Mortell opens up about a life shaped by childhood abuse, near‑death medical crises, and the loss of his first boat and two dogs in a fire — and how faith, grit, and a long‑held dream to sail the world carried him forward. Dave's journey from trauma to the South Pacific is raw, honest, and deeply human. If you're navigating your own storms, his story will show you the life that can be carved out of pain through a warrior mindset and faith. What Dave Learned the Hard Way Trauma can bury you or build you. His "warrior" mindset isn't bravado — it's the discipline of getting back up when life hits hard. Healing takes time and truth. He didn't fully face his childhood abuse until maturity and mentors gave him the tools to do it. Faith is a lifeline, not a slogan. Dave learned to talk to Jesus like a friend and trust that God wasn't finished with him — even when cancer and medical crises said otherwise. Marriage requires presence. He regrets not supporting his wife well through miscarriages and learned that faith should never replace empathy. Big dreams demand resilience. Losing a boat and two dogs could have ended the journey. Instead, it clarified what mattered: family, preparation, and a community built on shared values. Pain meds after surgery were supposed to help her heal, not take over her life. Years of prescriptions following a C-section, miscarriages, and unresolved childhood sexual trauma quietly turned into addiction, shame, and a double life that looked perfect on the outside while crumbling on the inside. When everything finally imploded, Shannon said yes to help, went to The Meadows in Arizona, and started the hard work of sobriety, inner child healing, and facing what she had been trying to numb for years. In this conversation, Shannon talks with Scott about why addiction is a symptom, not an identity, and why shame and silence keep so many vets stuck. She shares how she supports veterans, including her own partner, who survived a suicide attempt, by creating judgment-free spaces, normalizing dark thoughts, and asking the real question: why would dying feel easier than speaking up. From powerful inner child work and self-forgiveness to psychedelic-assisted healing with iboga at Ayo Life Sciences in Mexico, Shannon explains how some veterans are reducing PTSD, TBI symptoms, and pill loads while rebuilding a new sense of purpose after the uniform. They close with simple daily practices like gratitude lists, reframing painful experiences, and finding new missions through retreats and coaching that help vets move from fight-or-flight into a life that actually feels worth staying in. The Sacred Science of Birth: How Souls Choose Their ParentsIn this extraordinary solo transmission, Dr. Samuel B. Lee, MD, opens the multidimensional gateway to a mystery hidden in plain sight: how and why souls incarnate on Earth. This is not just about pregnancy or parenting—it's about frequency, choice, and divine architecture. What if conception isn't random? What if every soul is born by sacred covenant, not biology alone? In this powerful episode, Dr. Lee dives into the original Eternal Life CDT Plate Teachings to reveal the Azuray Point—the 8th chakra, the zero point, the stillness where soul contracts are made before birth, sometimes lifetimes in advance. From personal stories of karmic healing to the conception of his own incoming daughter, Dr. Lee shares the cosmic mechanics of soul embodiment, conception as scalar alignment, and how the mother's womb is a living Stargate—Stargate 13.This is for conscious parents, doulas, birthworkers, or anyone seeking to understand the deeper spiritual science behind how and why a soul chooses to be born now.Sacred Truths & Lessons from This Episode:• Birth is a cosmic covenant, not just a biological event• Souls enter by vibrational agreement—never by force• The Azuray Point holds the soul's pre-birth contract• Miscarriages are sacred pauses, not failures• The womb mirrors Stargate 13—every mother is a portal• Parenting is planetary service; conscious conception matters

In this episode, Sina tells Ginny the moment she hit rock bottom and the prayer she prayed asking God for one more chance at life. What happened next is hard to explain away: off the floor in three days, pain-free in three months, disease-free in a year. And a promise she made to spend the rest of her life helping others find their second chance too. This conversation isn't about perfection or fear or doing everything. It's about clarity. Sina explains why food labels often give a false sense of security, why “gluten-free” and “organic” don't always mean what we think they do, and why healing can't be reduced to a sticker on a package. She and Ginny talk about getting outside as real medicine—breathing in microbial diversity, regulating the nervous system, letting nature do what it's always done best.  Fertility Docs Uncensored is hosted by Dr. Carrie Bedient from the Fertility Center of Las Vegas, Dr. Susan Hudson from Texas Fertility Center, and Dr. Abby Eblen from Nashville Fertility Center. In this episode, the docs welcome visiting physician Dr. Shelley Dolitsky from Shady Grove Fertility in Towson, Maryland, for an in-depth conversation about recurrent pregnancy loss. Dr. Dolitsky begins by reviewing how different professional organizations define recurrent pregnancy loss. The American Society for Reproductive Medicine considers two or more losses—including very early biochemical losses—to be recurrent pregnancy loss, while the American College of OB/GYN defines it as two clinical losses under 20 weeks. The docs discuss how age dramatically affects miscarriage risk, with up to 75% of women over 40 experiencing miscarriages, compared with an overall rate of three to five percent. They walk through the full evaluation, which includes assessing the uterine cavity for abnormalities such as scar tissue, polyps, or congenital malformations; ensuring the fallopian tubes are normal and ruling out tubal damage; and performing chromosome analysis on both partners. Testing for antiphospholipid antibodies and lupus anticoagulant is also essential, as these can contribute to placental clotting issues. The conversation highlights the importance of screening for chronic medical issues that might be undiagnosed. About half of patients with recurrent pregnancy loss will have an identifiable and often treatable cause. Finally, the team discusses recommendations for patients whose workup is normal but who continue to experience losses. This podcast was sponsored by Shady Grove Fertility.

Senate Democrats were promised a vote by mid-December on extending the enhanced subsidies for the Affordable Care Act, but Republicans still can't decide whether they want to put forward their own alternative or what that might include. Meanwhile, both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration are roiled by debates over vaccines. Alice Miranda Ollstein of Politico, Joanne Kenen of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Politico Magazine, and Paige Winfield Cunningham of The Washington Post join KFF Health News' Julie Rovner to discuss those stories and more. Also this week, Rovner interviews KFF Health News' Aneri Pattani about her project tracking the distribution of $50 billion in opioid legal-settlement payments.  Plus, for “extra credit” the panelists suggest health policy stories they read this week that they think you should read, too: Julie Rovner: The New York Times' “These Hospitals Figured Out How To Slash C-Section Rates,” by Sarah Kliff and Bianca Pallaro.  Joanne Kenen: Wired's “A Fentanyl Vaccine Is About To Get Its First Major Test,” by Emily Mullin.  Paige Winfield Cunningham: The New York Times' “A Smartphone Before Age 12 Could Carry Health Risks, Study Says,” by Catherine Pearson.  Alice Miranda Ollstein: The Independent's “Miscarriages, Infections, Neglect: The Pregnant Women Detained by ICE,” by Kelly Rissman.

Kristin was never sure she wanted to become a mom until she attended a friend's birth, which catalyzed something deep within her. But getting pregnant didn't come easily, a struggle she partially attributes to her long-term use of birth control. She experienced several miscarriages before turning to IVF. Her fertility doctors told her she had less than a 5% chance of conceiving on her own. When IVF failed to result in a healthy pregnancy, Kristin took six months off from treatment to focus on holistic lifestyle and nutritional changes. At the end of those six months, she became pregnant with her son—naturally. Kristin's birth was a relatively straightforward hospital delivery, but she later suffered a devastating hospital-acquired MRSA infection in the postpartum period. This is only part one of Kristin's story. Tune in next week to hear part two! Carnage everywhere, folks. Murders, assaults, cities turning into Mad Max realities. And guess who's holding the camera? Democrats, about 90% of the time. From your neighborhood smash-and-grab artist to the suit-wearing snakes in D.C., it's a Democrat production all the way.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

A husband and wife sit down together to share their full fertility journey - from trying earlier than expected, to three heartbreaking miscarriages, IVF, October 7th, and ultimately, welcoming two beautiful daughters. In this deeply personal conversation, Rabbi Danny and Tamara Stein speak openly about the experience from both perspectives: the pain of loss, the fear of pregnancy after miscarriage, the anxiety of parenting during times of crisis, and the ongoing work of staying connected as a couple. They also reflect on what it means for men to have space to grieve, hope, and believe, and what it's like to navigate infertility and loss while serving as clergy, balancing the role of comforting others with managing their own heartbreak. More about Rabbi Danny Stein: Danny Stein is the rabbi of the Selma and Lawrence Ruben Base UWS, a pluralistic Jewish community for 20s & 30s in New York-based out of his and his wife Tamara's home. He feels passionate about helping folks connect with Judaism in ways meaningful for themselves. After being supported by IWSTHAB amidst his own fertility journey filled with losses and uncertainty, Danny is proud to help change the conversation within Jewish communities. He loves studying Hasidut, eating sushi, and is an overjoyed abbah (father) to their IVF baby. Connect with Rabbi Danny Stein: -Contact his personal Instagram and Upper West Side BASE Instagram More about Tamara Stein (J.D.): Tamara is originally from Sacramento, CA, but has been living on the East Coast and in the Midwest for well over a decade. She moved to the Upper West Side of New York City in 2023 to create Base UWS, a pluralistic, diverse, vibrant Jewish community for 20s and 30s out of her and her husband Danny's home. Tamara is a lawyer who received her J.D. from Suffolk University in Boston, MA. On top of helping to run Base UWS, Tamara currently works full-time as the Deputy Director at Mayday Health, a non-profit that educates folks on medication abortion and how to access it in all 50 states. She is passionate about using her love of policy, law, operations, and strategic thinking to contribute to health equity and access, and feels privileged to have been given the opportunity to merge her passions with a career. Tamara loves (in no particular order): eating sushi, traveling to visit friends and family, trying new workout classes around the city, making challah, arguing about anything and everything, watching The Bachelor, and taking long walks on Shabbat with no destination in mind. Ruth van Vierzen's journey began in 1970, the year she was born and David Milgaard was wrongfully convicted of murder. While Ruth built her life, Milgaard spent years in prison for a crime he didn't commit, until his release in 1992. This injustice inspired a remarkable advocacy journey that ultimately reshaped Canadian law. In 2019, after Milgaard advocated for an independent commission to address wrongful convictions, Ruth reached out to him via LinkedIn. This connection led to the formation of a powerful advocacy group, including lawyer James Lockyer, wrongfully imprisoned Ron Dalton, and filmmaker Lori Kuffner. Through strategic letter writing, media engagement, and lobbying, the group secured meetings with Justice Minister David Lametti, which ultimately led to the establishment of the Miscarriage of Justice Commission. This was significant because Canada was the only G7 nation without such a body to review wrongful convictions, despite numerous government recommendations. The commission is crucial for all Canadians, particularly Indigenous people who are disproportionately affected by wrongful convictions. Though Milgaard passed away in 2022 before the commission was fully implemented, his legacy lives on in the David and Joyce Milgaard's Law, a symbol of transformative advocacy. Ruth's story shows that meaningful change often starts with one person's determination to take action or refuse to give up. When we see injustice, we all have the power and perhaps the responsibility to be that person.  What issue matters enough to you that you would be willing to persist until you see change?Send BEHAS a text.Support the showTo Share - Connect & Relate: Share Your Thoughts and Shape the Show! My guest is Dr. Melissa Ilardo, Ph.D., professor of biomedical informatics at the University of Utah. We discuss the interplay between genes and behaviors, including how certain behaviors can improve resilience by changing gene and organ function, as well as natural selection events happening in humans today. We also discuss the immune system–related reasons people find the smells of potential mates attractive—or not. We explore how physical and psychological traits are passed from one generation to the next, and the specific behaviors that can influence gene expression to improve health and performance. Melissa explains her lab's pioneering research on breath-hold training and how activation of the dive reflex through breath holding can significantly improve oxygen availability by changing spleen size and function. We also delve into the medical uses and ethics of gene editing to cure disease in both babies and adults.
