In this special episode of Pray with our Feet podcast, Mom and I chat with Yaa Abbensetts-Dobson, Michele Evans and Dr. Shameka Poetry Thomas, about the latest issue of Spoken Black Girl Magazine (which focuses on the Black motherhood experience) while also uplifting Black Maternal Health Week (April 11-17) founded by Black Mamas Matter Alliance. We dive into the urgent need for community care, creating safe spaces for Black mothers and their children, resisting the suffocation of our wombs by oppressive systems, and the vital need for rest, mindfulness and radical self care in the tradition of Audre Lorde and June Jordan; each of these practices is a sacred form of resistance, sustaining us in the ongoing work of collective liberation. We call our joy back to us, and remain rooted in our faith, despite the challenges. What's worth talking about? Pixar's short "Purl" in Bootie and Bossy's Episode 41!What happens when a pink ball of yarn named Purl starts working at B.R.O. Industries? Find out in Kristen Lester's Pixar animated short “Purl.” There's a lot going on in these 8 minutes that's worth talking about. It's “unbeweavable,” as Purl herself would say, but there's a deeper message underneath all of the knitting puns. Purl is the literal and classic “round” character capable of surprise and transformation as she reknits herself in the bathroom to look more like her male co-workers. Her knitting skills are rewarded too: when she looks and talks more like her “flat,” stereotypical male co-workers, she's accepted and listened to. But what's the cost? The arrival of another ball of yellow yarn—"Lacy"—forces her to make a choice: go back to her old, true, round, pink self, or stay flat in her knitted power suit and be accepted by the bros? There's a beautiful arc and message here as Purl returns to her former self. Here's what Kristen Lester, the director, had to say:"I wanted to tell and speak to an experience that I felt like we had not been talking about a lot . . . Believe in your voice, believe in what you have to say, believe in the things that you like. You can get challenged a lot, especially when you are a young woman going into the industry. It's really important to stay true to who you are and believe in yourself."--Kristen Lester, Director of “Purl”But Purl's round, colorful presence also transforms B.R.O. Industries, ostensibly making it a more welcoming place for all. That's the beauty of inclusion—it makes it better for everyone, right? But what about how the men are flattened and stereotyped? And the guys at B.R.O. Industries—what if they don't want to change? What if the culture of scarcity makes them feel like they are losing instead of gaining something? Art prompts these important conversations, and these things are worth talking about, especially today. And speaking of great conversation, did we mention that we will be hosting a Zoom Knit Night with Kim Davis on Friday, April 4, 7:00 PM EST/4:00 PM PST? Put it on your calendars now and plan to join us! We'll be sending out a link to register soon, so stay tuned! And if you need a little snack to go with your wine, may we recommend Dorie Greenspan's recipe for “Savory Cheese and Chive Bread” from her cookbook, Around My French Table? It's easy and versatile—throw in whatever you have on hand—those random hunks of leftover cheese, bacon, walnuts or olives. Even the ungrateful children love it! So whip up some cheesy, savory bread, watch “Purl,” and join us on April 4 for some laughs, some good crafting talk and great conversation!
TVC 681.3: Ed welcomes back singer/actress Linda Purl (Happy Days, Matlock, The Office). Linda is about to star in Crazy Mama, a riveting one-woman play that not only sheds light on the issue of mental illness with Southern-style humor and directness, but will feature Linda playing sixteen different characters. Ed asks Linda what first attracted her to the play and how she approaches to taking on the various personalities she must assume over the course of the story, plus Linda shares a few memories about working with Garry Marshall, including the many ways that Marshall kept the cast of Happy Days grounded despite the show's enormous success. Written by Sharon Scott Williams and directed by Linda's fellow Happy Days alumnus Anson Williams, Crazy Mama makes its world premiere at the Rubicon Theatre in Ventura, California on Wednesday, Mar. 26 through Sunday, Apr. 6. For tickets and more information, call (805) 667-2900 or go to RubiconTheatre.org. Linda Purl will also perform at the Catalina Jazz Club in Hollywood, California for one night only, Sunday, Mar. 16, beginning at 7:30pm. Click here for tickets and more information.
Sharon Scott Williams bares her soul in a play called Crazy Mama, a powerful, personal story that's at once unique and wholly relatable. It's about family, mental illness and the bonds and devotion that propel us to protect and defend those we hold dear. Crazy Mama is running at the Rubicon Theatre in Ventura, CA March 26 - April 6, 2025. It stars Linda Purl and is directed by Anson Williams, both icons of classic TV, including Happy Days, and one of whom is married to playwright Sharon Scott Williams. (You only get one guess which.)Sharon came home from school, at the age of eight, to find her mother wielding a knife, in a psychotic episode. The ensuing events led to extended hospitalization and a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia. Her family's coping heroism inspired her, decades later, to write a memoir, which Sharon's husband, actor and director Anson Williams (Yes, you guess correctly), felt would make an astonishing one-woman stage show. With Linda Purl in the starring role (playing 16 different characters!) the stage play of 'Crazy Mama' gives audiences the opportunity to reflect on their own experiences and it provides a conduit to conversations about mental illness, trauma and family dynamics. Sharon tells how the crafting of the play inspired the processing of her long buried, confusing emotional cocktail of fear, guilt, shame, and anger and with similar Virginia ancestral roots, Linda identified instantly with the work and the power of its messages.Plus, Sharon, Anson and Linda all claim Covid Love stories! Sharon, an Ojai, California Real Estate agent, had shown Anson a house a decade earlier. But, with both of them single, she received a text invitation from him for lunch! They spent the pandemic falling in love. Linda ran into an acquaintance with a very similar show-biz history, Patrick Duffy. Their mutual friend, Richard Thomas paved the way and their Zoom friendship blossomed into romance! Also, we are proud to present our all-new IMDB Roulette Sub Genre quiz sensation, Were You On It, featuring full disclosures about Anson and Linda's appearances on: Baywatch, The Waltons, The Secret Storm, Fantasy Island, Black Market Baby and I Married A Centerfold! In recommendations-- Weezy: Documentary Beatles 64 on Disney+Fritz: Documentary Becoming Katharine Graham on Amazon PrimePath Points of Interest:Crazy Mama at The Rubicon TheatreAnson Williams IMDBAnson Williams WikipediaAnson Williams on FacebookLinda Purl IMDBLinda Purl WikipediaLinda Purl on InstagramLinda Purl in "POSSIBILITIES - songs of HOPE, RISK and MAYBE" at Catalina Jazz Club in HollywoodBeatles 64 - Disney+Becoming Katharine Graham - Amazon Prime

Picked up in the NoCKRs 2024 destash room. I've knit about 10” of 13” total for the body. Pinot Noir Purchase Targhee: I've been spinning the giant (2.2 pound) ball of Targhee roving I bought from an attendee at last fall's Fort Worden Knitting Retreat. Last episode I talked about how the fiber made me sneeze. I removed the outer layer of roving and started spinning again with no sneezing. Kelly suggested I dye some of the roving so I've dyed 4 oz each burgundy and green. The roving is very thin and delicate. I wound the roving on the knitty noddy and tied it in six places. I tied the roving more tightly than I would for yarn, but I wanted to be sure the weight of the water didn't felt or pull the roving apart. I plan to dye more colors. Kelly's Projects Finished: 13.8 ounces of Jazzman (CVM x Merino x Columbia) 3-py. Use all the Spinning Tools Challenge: Wyatt Norwegian wheel is now spinning a Greenwood Fiber BFL braid. I could kick myself for not planning for this eclipse. I should have booked a room in Austin, TX two years ago. But I did not, so I'll be here in Wisconsin with a still pretty good 90% eclipse and a sketchy forecast. No matter where you are for the eclipse, you'll need a good soundtrack. As with past celestial events you can count on Low Light Mixes to provide an accompaniment for your viewing. The titles tell the story of the eclipse, starting with "Ordinary Moon" and "Edge of Darkness" then as the moon obscures more the sun the are "Gathering Shadows" as "Darkness Descends" Then as we "Step Into The Void" of the "Solar Eclipse" and the "Umbra" we are "In The Perfect Darkness" while "The Moon Remained Silent." Next we see "Light Among The Shadows" with the "Light Returning" and the "Return of the Sun." I hope you all have good weather and a view. Enjoy the show and the mix. Cheers! Steve Springett is the Chair of the OWASP CycloneDX Core Working Group. CycloneDX is one of the two main machine readable formats that SBOMs are being created in, although CycloneDX can capture all sorts of BOMs. In this episode we assume listeners know what a SBOM is and why it might be desired by a vendor and asset owner. The beginning of the show we cover some basics of CycloneDX If you know the basics, skip to 14:24 where we get into the details Statistics on who is generating and using CycloneDX SBOMs, and the impact of governement regulations on the use. Steve's view of the NTIA Minimum Elements for SBOM v. CycloneDX elements. How CycloneDX tries to capture the completeness of and confidence in the SBOM. The naming problem. CPE, CVE, NVD, SWID, PURL and more. Steve describes the problem and what he thinks is the way forward. Vulnerabilities ... and why Steve thinks VEX is a missed opportunity. Why do some knitter's block socks after washing? We don't and are wondering if there is an important reason to do so. We need input from our listeners. Great Wall to Wall Carpet Removal Project In planning stage of Snowflower by Heidi Kirrmeier. Bought a different fourth color…rose! Also bought lime green and hot pink Cascade 220 to make a Lily Pulitzer inspired tea cozy to go with my Lily Pulitzer tray. Also bought Lang Yarn Jawol fingering in red, green and cream to make Santa's Laundry Line by Eleonore von Castelmur. Suppose to use sock scraps but I don't have any in Christmas colors. I do now! Kelly's Projects Finished socks for myself using the yarn from Purl 2 Walla Walla called Epicurean Kitchen. Currently knitting socks using a skein of Gay Pride Flag from Weird Sisters Wool Emporium . I finished spinning the Corriedale x Targhee x Merino fleece where I dyed the wool and then carded. This is a Black Sheep Gathering fleece from 2017. I still have about 2 lbs of this fleece left and I was losing about 10% in the carding process on this fleece. I started and finished a 3 ounce braid of mixed BFL that was overdyed by Two Guys Yarn. It's a two ply yarn in muted primary colors. I'm still working on processing a Corriedale x Border Leicester from 2016. I'm flicking the locks before I feed them into the drum carder, trying to keep the fibers as aligned as possible (as is done in combing). With this fleece I'm pulling the batts off the carder through a diz and making nests of pseudo-combed top. This process has resulted in about 20% loss. I worked on the quilt and completed the eleventh circle of quilting out of twenty. I learned a lot on this project: Great Wall to Wall Carpet Removal Project Kelly's Projects I'm continuing the pair of socks for myself using the yarn from Purl 2 Walla Walla called Epicurean Kitchen. I'm on the foot of the second sock. I have a skein of Gay Pride Flag from Weird Sisters Wool Emporium waiting to be cast on for my next pair of socks (for a gift). I finished spinning the Cormo x Merino x Wensleydale fleece. I have about 1500 yards of a 3-ply that is about fingering weight. The staple length gives the yarn a nice sheen but it is soft enough that most people could probably wear it in a pullover. This is a Black Sheep Gathering fleece from 2016. I still have another box of this for another project. I'm now spinning the Corriedale x Targhee x Merino fleece where I dyed the wool and then carded. The batts are a nice heathered blue/purple and I'm spinning woolen. I have 9 ounces of the purple carded batts to spin. This is a Black Sheep Gathering fleece from 2017. I still have about 2 lbs of this fleece left and I was losing about 10% in the carding process on this fleece. I am also working on processing a Corriedale x Border Leicester from 2016. This fleece has nice long locks so I am doing the same as with the black fleece. I am flicking the locks before I feed them into the drum carder, trying to keep the fibers as aligned as possible (as is done in combing). With this fleece I'm pulling the batts off the carder through a diz and making nests of pseudo-combed top. This process has resulted in about 20% loss. I think I'd like to finish processing the whole bag (about 36 ounces). I've processed about 8 ounces in the first batch and ended up with 6.25 ounces of nests. I will probably use this for rug yarn. Marsha's Projects Noromania: I am using 40 skeins of Noro Kureyon (Aran weight) to make a blanket for Mark. I've knit 50 inches and used 25 balls. This started out fun but at slightly past the halfway point, it is becoming a slog. Stella's (notenoughtime) is to knit the blanket in two halves and kitchener together. That way I will reduce the bulk while knitting the blanket. Anzula Socks: Using two shades of Anzula Dreamy (blue) and Squishy (coral) that I bought at Stitches 2022. Working on the foot of the second sock. Flowers from My Garden: Starting a spinning project with fiber I bought at Stitches in March. I spun three bobbins each holding a 4 oz braid. I'm in the process of warping the loom. Kelly's Projects Started the color work portion of the Summer Fjord by Trin-Annelie. Main color is Quince and Co. Sparrow in an icy gray blue called Birch. I'm striping in some spirit yarn Louet linen in navy. I started working in the deep orange as the third color and I'm starting to second guess both the textured stitch patterns and the color. The pattern is a 3 stripe repeat and I'm at the end of the second stripe. I have two new projects, too. I started a pair of socks for myself using the yarn from Purl 2 Walla Walla. It's a pale gold, wine, and rose that looks like it has been overwashed with a pale gray. It reminds me of wine and a charcuterie board. It's called Epicurean Kitchen and is named for a TMACs Epicurean Kitchen on N. Colville. That's the same street as the Kirkman House where I lived for my senior year. In fact P2W2 is just down the street, too. My other new project is spinning. I started spinning the braid I bought from Wonderland Dyeworks. The colorway is Summer Bliss and it is green, gold, and deep purple. I've spun up the 5 oz. of singles with a fractal technique and I plan to make a 3 ply. TVC 611.4: Ed welcomes television icons Patrick Duffy (Dallas, Step by Step, The Bold and the Beautiful) and Linda Purl (Happy Days, Matlock, The Office). Patrick and Linda are co-founders of Duffy's Dough, a company that shows you how to make your own sourdough bread, sourdough pizza dough, sourdough cinnamon rolls, and many other homemade goodies, all from scratch—and all with the help of a dehydrated sourdough starter kit that originated with Patrick's family more than seventy years ago. Topics this segment include how the story of Duffy's Dough begins with how Linda and Patrick first became a couple—and the role that actor Richard Thomas played in bringing them both together. The Duffy's Dough Sourdough Starter and Essentials Kit is available for a limited time and includes dehydrated starter, flour, sugar, measuring spoons and cups, apron, potholder, scraper, a French rolling pin, and a recipe book, while the Solo Dehydrated Sourdough Starter Kit includes dehydrated starter and a recipe book. All net proceeds from sales of Duffy's Dough starter kits will support Patrick and Linda's various charitable causes (which include food scarcity, education, and the environment), while Patrick personally made each flake of dehydrated starter that went into the first 1,000 kits made.
