Jen has been a quiet superfan of David Gate ever since discovering one of his poems on Instagram and instantly texting it to six friends. A British-born poet, writer, and visual artist, David explores themes of care, community, and spiritual resilience. Today, he joins Jen and Amy to talk about his latest work, A Rebellion of Care—a powerful blend of essays and poetry rooted in tenderness, authenticity, and resistance. From writing to flour milling and homesteading, David's life is a living practice of nurturing both self and community with intention. Key highlights from this conversation include: How radical tenderness can be an act of resistance Why are many people living radicalized lives without realizing it, and often for things they don't truly care about How homesteading is a rebellion against modern food practices Reimagining masculinity and what it could look like in a better world Building community and friendship as a vital source of joy and support in life How anger and joy are companion emotions The sacredness of everyday practices Thought-provoking Quotes: “I did not want to have an email job and I did not want to be in meetings that could have been emails. I did not want to be on Slack. I just didn't want that to be what I was spending my time doing. I loved caring for people, and I loved creating and writing, and I got to do that within the church world.” – David Gate “It's just very hard not to be cynical about everything and what I found was that I was cynical because I really, really cared. And, because I really, really cared, everything was just so overwhelming, and the easiest way to deal with that was to shut down and be cynical and be snarky. But, I realized that I had to press through and embrace what was behind that cynicism. so I had to really embrace my own earnestness and my own care in the world and concentrate on what I wanted to build rather than what I wanted to tear down.” – David Gate “It's a constant battle to speak the truth. Even things we all know It can be difficult to say, if it's not something that is normally said, and it's not something that is normally expressed, so you have to fight for that and you have to fight for your experience of the truth. You have to fight for your story. You have to fight for all of that.” – David Gate “I think it's very, very difficult for men to reach for emotional honesty because everything tells you that you're failing if you do that. But it's the most important work right now. And so much of what men are actually looking for in this world, intimacy, a sense of place, a sense of belonging, companionship, adventure, excitement, is on the other side of reaching for that emotional honesty.” – David Gate Resources Mentioned in This Episode: A Rebellion of Care: Poems and Essays by David Gate - https://amzn.to/4jjf87X Good Soil: The Education of an Accidental Farmhand by Jeff Chu - https://amzn.to/3GnS21w Cultivating Belonging and Evolving Faith with Jeff Chu - https://jenhatmaker.com/podcasts/series-64/cultivating-belonging-and-evolving-faith-with-jeff-chu/ Sarah Bessey - https://www.sarahbessey.com/ Armando Veve, Illustrator - https://www.instagram.com/armandoveve/ Awake: A Memoir by Jen Hatmaker - https://amzn.to/3YHKgpw Sinners film (2025) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt31193180/ Malaprop's Bookstore, Asheville - https://www.malaprops.com/ Guest's Links: Website - https://www.davidgatepoet.com/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/davidgatepoet/ Substack - https://substack.com/@davidgatepoet Connect with Jen!Jen's Website - https://jenhatmaker.com/ Jen's Instagram - https://instagram.com/jenhatmakerJen's Twitter - https://twitter.com/jenHatmaker/ Jen's Facebook - https://facebook.com/jenhatmakerJen's YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/user/JenHatmaker The For the Love Podcast is presented by Audacy. Can you mourn someone who’s still alive? What would you say if you knew time was short? In this honest and deeply moving episode of A Really Good Cry, Radhi Devlukia shares her experience of “living grief” as her 91-year-old grandmother faces an untreatable illness. This isn’t a conversation about death — it’s about life and how we choose to show up when we know time is limited. Radhi opens up about the emotional complexity of loving through loss, the power of presence, and the spiritual and personal awakenings that emerge when we’re forced to let go before we’re ready. You’ll hear reflections on generational wisdom, family dynamics, spiritual detachment, and the importance of asking hard questions before it’s too late. In this episode, you’ll learn: Why “living grief” might be the hardest kind — and how to move through it. How regret is often born from inaction, not circumstance Rituals that ground you when you feel helpless The emotional, physical, and spiritual impact of anticipatory grief Why presence is the most powerful gift you can offer The healing power of memory-making, even in grief What it means to detach with love — not avoidance This is an invitation to pause, feel, and live fully with the ones you love — while you still can. (Spirit Rock Meditation Center) For the Buddha, practice was understood as involving three trainings, in wisdom, meditation, and ethics (sila). Ethics, typically under-emphasized in later Buddhism, including Western Buddhism, with sometimes clear negative consequences, had as its horizon helping others. The Buddha said: “Wander forth . . . for the welfare of the multitude, for the happiness of the multitude, out of compassion for the world.” The later emphasis on the bodhisattva develops this emphasis further. In this talk, we suggest a contemporary “Eightfold Path” for understanding and responding to the current difficult times in the society and world. It's outlined in terms of three wisdom guidelines, two meditation guidelines, and three ethics guidelines. The talk is followed by discussion.

Together, we will explore the critical distinction between "letting go" and "giving up" through a Buddhist philosophical lens. Margaret discusses how letting go is a conscious, compassionate practice of releasing attachment without losing hope or effort, while giving up represents a collapse into despair, apathy, and complete surrender. Using personal anecdotes and insights from Buddhist teachings, she encourages listeners to navigate challenging times with wisdom, equanimity, and continued engagement. Key Points

Opening up to life as it is requires us to let go of the desire to be in control of conditions and to get intimate with suffering — not just our own, but the suffering of others and the planet. I feel like we're trying, every day, to be kind, and ethical, and to serve well. We're even taking the time to cultivate these qualities. And I also feel like when we fail, it's hard. And even harder to turn towards the situation with clarity. What gets in the way, for me, is justification and denial. And that's when I slide backwards. Not because my “fail” is terrible, although it might be. But because I lose sight of the positive. Forget about all the goodness. And when that happens, it's easier to make another mistake. So what if we pay more attention to the positive, when it shows up? Log it into our memories, our bodies (which keep the score)? My guess is that then, in those, “oh no!” moments, the recollection of goodness will act like ballast, and it'll be easier to turn towards the moment with courage, and clarity, and compassion. And ultimately, repair any harm (to others, and to ourselves).

If you've ever caught yourself thinking, “I just want to feel better,” you're not alone. When I ask my clients what they want to improve in their lives, no matter how they say it, whether they're talking about stress, burnout, their business, their time, or their health, it almost always comes down to two things. They either want to be happier or they want to feel better, and that might be what you want, too. Maybe you've been thinking something like, If I could just get through this month, or If I could finally hire that one person, or even, If I could make more money, get more time back, or stop feeling so overwhelmed. All of those thoughts are really about one thing. You want to feel different than how you're feeling right now, right? Let's dig a little deeper into how that happens. On this, the last PauseCast episode for the season, we talk summer… what we hope to do, or be, for the coming summer break. Considering summer from a place of intention. But also, how to find our way into rest, and joy, and experiences that enrich our lives and memories to sustain us through those long winter months. As David Whyte says in his great book “Consolations”: “Rest is the conversation between what we love to do and how we love to be…”. With this, rest is the great enabler of returning to our balanced self. Summer allows times for languishing, for watching clouds and the shapes they make; sitting under deep velvet night skies and catching fireflies. Angie and I wish this for each of you, whenever summer lands in your place in this world. How can our Buddhist practice make a difference in the face of all the challenges of the modern world?Drawing on his decades of experience as a teacher, activist, and meditator, Donald Rothberg issues an urgent call to integrate the deepest aspects of Buddhist practice with the pressing needs of our time. By uniting meditation, ethics, emotional work, joy, and conscious action, he maps out a path that combines inner development with outward action. The Five Themes of PracticeDonald structures his talk around five essential themes that support a holistic Buddhist path:Bridging Inner and Outer Transformation:Buddhist practice is often internal, but Donald emphasizes its potential to transform society as well. He reminds practitioners that meditation and activism need not be separate and that cycles of inner and outer focus are natural.Ethics as Foundational:Ethics (sila) is a cornerstone of Buddhist training, often overlooked in the West. Donald reimagines ethics as a “commitment to care” and encourages practitioners to see ethical precepts not only as personal guidelines but as vehicles for social justice.Working with Difficult Emotions:Emotions such as fear, anger, and despair are not barriers to practice but rich material for growth. Donald introduces practices like the “truth mandala” to help individuals and communities process collective grief and rage.Nurturing Joy:Amid crises, joy becomes an act of resistance and resilience. Donald illustrates how joy is part of our inner nature and can be cultivated through song, ritual, and community—citing Emma Goldman and Rabbi Nachman as examples.Listening for What Calls You:Rather than trying to solve all the world's problems, Donald advises identifying one issue that deeply resonates. From there, he suggests taking concrete, manageable steps to become involved, guided by what enlivens us.Donald expands the traditional view of ethics beyond individual behavior to include social responsibility, discussing how community plays a central role in supporting ethical practice. He shares how personal suffering can be transformed into a source of connection and compassion.__________Donald Rothberg, Ph.D., is a member of the Teachers Council at Spirit Rock Center, a guiding teacher for the Marin Sangha in San Rafael, California, and a regular teacher at the East Bay Meditation Center in Oakland, California, Southern Dharma Retreat Center, InsightLA, and New York Insight. He teaches retreats and groups on concentration and insight meditation practice, lovingkindness practice, transforming the judgmental mind, mindful communication, working skillfully with conflict, and socially engaged Buddhism. He has practiced insight meditation since 1976, and has also received training in Tibetan Dzogchen, body-based psychotherapy, and trauma work. He has helped guide many six-month to two-year training programs in socially engaged spirituality, both Buddhist-based and interfaith, and is the author of The Engaged Spiritual Life: A Buddhist Approach to Transforming Ourselves and the World, and the co-editor of Ken Wilber in Dialogue.Learn more at https://donaldrothberg.com ______________ To support our efforts to share these talks with LGBTQIA audiences worldwide, please visit https://gaybuddhist.org/There you can: Donate Learn how to participate live Find our schedule of upcoming speakers Join our mailing list or discussion forum Enjoy many hundreds of these recorded talks dating back to 1996 CREDITSAudio Engineer: George HubbardProducer: Tom BrueinMusic/Logo/Artwork: Derek Lassiter
When we are faced with anger, stress, frustration, and division, it can be difficult to remember the good things. Life can be overwhelming and hard. How do we stay kind and compassionate when things are so tense? The book Appreciate These Things: Eight Ways of Cultivating Compassion finds an answer in Philippians 4:8: “Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” On this episode we will welcome author Jill Duffield as a guest on the live recording of the Faith Talks podcast to discuss her book, Appreciate These Things, and the importance of this scripture.By way of background, Duffield is a senior minister and an author of several other books, and she formerly served as the editor of The Presbyterian Outlook. She holds an M.Div. from Union Presbyterian Seminary and a D.Min. from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary. You will leave this conversation feeling fulfilled and grateful for the good things in life.

In this episode of the Rocksolid Families podcast, hosts Linda Hutchinson and her husband discuss the importance of emotional comfort for children. They emphasize the role of parents, caregivers, and educators in providing this comfort, especially during challenging emotional moments. The hosts set the stage for a conversation about how emotional comfort can significantly impact a child's long-term emotional health.•Definition: Emotional comfort is described as the support and reassurance that parents and caregivers provide to children when they are experiencing intense emotions, such as sadness, anger, or frustration.•Importance: The hosts convey that while it is crucial to provide comfort, it is equally important not to over-coddle children. They discuss the balance of creating a safe emotional environment from which children can venture into the “choppy waters” of life. The Need for Emotional Regulation•Understanding Emotions: Children often lack the vocabulary to articulate their emotions. The hosts stress the importance of helping children identify and understand their emotions, which is a vital part of emotional regulation.•Consequences of Poor Emotional Support: Without adequate emotional comfort and regulation, children may struggle with self-soothing and coping mechanisms, leading to long-term emotional difficulties.Introducing the MATS FrameworkThe hosts introduce a simple framework—MATS—to help caregivers respond to children's emotional needs effectively.MATS Breakdown1.M - Mention:Observation: The first step is to acknowledge the child's emotional state by mentioning what you see. For example, stating, “You look really upset right now,” helps the child feel seen and understood.Body Language: Observing body language is crucial; it provides insight into how children are feeling, especially if they are non-verbal.2.A - Ask:Curiosity: The next step involves asking questions to validate the child's feelings. Encouraging children to express themselves is essential for emotional processing.Avoiding Dismissal: The hosts emphasize that caregivers should refrain from downplaying the child's feelings and instead validate their emotions to help them feel heard.3.T - Touch:Appropriate Connection: The framework includes physical touch, such as hugs or gentle touches, which can offer comfort. However, the hosts advise being cautious with physical contact, especially if it is not a common practice in the household.Creating Comfort: Physical presence can help children feel secure, aiding in emotional regulation.4.S - Stay:Presence: Finally, staying with the child until their emotional needs are met is crucial. This involves sitting in silence if necessary and showing that you are there for them without rushing to “fix” the situation.Long-Term Impact: The hosts stress that this steady presence creates a sense of security and helps children understand that they are not alone in their struggles.https://rocksolidfamilies.orgSupport the show#Rocksolidfamilies, #familytherapy, #marriagecounseling, #parenting, #faithbasedcounseling, #counseling, #Strongdads, #coaching, #lifecoach, #lifecoaching, #marriagecoaching, #marriageandfamily, #control, #security, #respect, #affection, #love, #purpose, #faith, #affairs, #infidelity

Original Air Date: December 11, 2017 Born in New York City, Pema Chödrön is one of the first Western women to be fully ordained as a Tibetan Buddhist nun. Pema explains how difficult times can be an opportunity for growth and change if you're willing to embrace the situation and the feelings that come with it. One of the basic Buddhist tenets, Pema says, is that change is constant. "Things are going to keep changing," she says. "If you're invested in security and certainty, then you're not going to feel good a lot of the time."

In this special 9-year anniversary episode, I'm doing things a little differently. Instead of a guest interview, I'm doing a solocast in which I share nine shifts I've noticed in the parenting paradigm for those of us raising neurodivergent kids over the past almost decade since I first founded Tilt. Some of the things I explore in this episode include the evolution of language within the neurodiversity movement, the increased recognition of dual diagnoses like Autistic ADHD and new identifications such as PDA, how concepts like Polyvagal theory and co-reguation have profoundly changed the ways differently wired children are understood, the importance of centering neurodivergent voices, and much more. * I've put together a special anniversary playlist of the podcast episodes I reference in this episode over on Spotify. To listen to that, click here.* About Debbie Debbie Reber, MA is a parenting activist, bestselling author, speaker, and the CEO and founder of Tilt Parenting, a resource, top-performing podcast, consultancy, and community with a focus on shifting the paradigm for parents raising and embracing neurodivergent children.
