When we agree to practice joy through community, connection, and belonging in its own powerful way, it is an act of defiance to what's going on around us. We must ask ourselves, particularly in these difficult times, what we are fighting for? We fight for a meaningful world that yields joy. This commitment to fostering shared happiness becomes the ultimate evidence of resilience and a deeply healing public force. As we approach the new year, we're bringing back one of our favorite episodes of Everyday Better, where Leah sits down with Katherine May, author of Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times. Each winter, life slows down. It's dark and cold, yet the season offers an opportunity for rest. In Wintering, Katherine shares the story of navigating a personal ‘winter' – a challenging period of time during which she retreated into herself in order to cope with everything happening around her. Drawing on research about how Northern cultures weather their own harsh winters, Wintering is a balm for weary souls everywhere. In this episode, Leah and Katherine discuss the art of slowing down and how to embrace the metaphorical seasons we all go through in life. Join Anna and Bracey as they unpack Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times by Katherine May, a reflective book about surviving life's colder, quieter seasons. In this episode, they talk about how the book turned out to be very different from what they expected—less a traditional self-help guide and more a gentle, literary meditation on rest, loss, and renewal. Through personal reactions and thoughtful discussion, Anna and Bracey explore the idea of “wintering” as a natural part of human experience. Cozy, honest, and introspective, this conversation invites listeners to rethink how they move through difficult seasons. If you've enjoyed any of our episodes, we'd appreciate it if you'd share with a friend. "Your job isn't to know the answer. Your job is to ask all the right questions of where the business is going and…Don't be afraid…(Align) with people who could see the possibility of (your) experience…Take that stretch job and just remember you're in the room to ask different questions, and that's perfectly fine. So, take the stretch and then lean into your experience that allows you to have a different lens and a different perspective." Original airdate: March 08, 2022 At some point in our life, we all go through difficult times when we experience pain, disappointments and loss. These experiences can have a profound impact on us, for better or worse. According to my guest, Stephen Cope, crises does not have to derail us. It can be the very thing that can help us find our purpose and step forward as our best selves. This is the central theme of his new book “Dharma in Difficult Times.” Stephen Cope is a psychotherapist, Kripalu Yoga teacher, scholar and best-selling author of several books on yoga and meditation. He is the founder of the Kripalu Institute for Extraordinary Living in Stockbridge, Massachusetts—the largest center for the study and practice of yoga in the Western world. Yoga Journal named him one of the most influential thinkers, writers, and teachers on the current American yoga scene. Stephen offers his insight into how we can identify purpose as we find our way through our darkest times. He explains what it means to find our Dharma using examples from his own life and the lives and teachings of some famous figures from history.
