Dr. Dominic Brady, an award-winning plastic surgeon, was diagnosed with incurable Multiple Myeloma in 2017. Determined to augment his conventional treatment naturally, he did a deep dive into extensive cancer and nutrition research. As a result, Dr. Brady adopted a whole food, plant-based diet, regular exercise, and targeted supplements. His remarkable remission has surprised his oncologist, and he's now on an extremely low dose of immunomodulators, with a goal to completely eliminate medication—something previously thought impossible for myeloma patients. In this episode, Dr. Brady shares his journey from being a cancer patient to helping others navigate their own cancer treatments. He highlights the critical role of nutrition, which is largely neglected in medical training. Inspired by Dr. Michael Gregor's book How Not to Die, Dr. Brady embraced a diverse, plant-based diet to support his microbiome, aiming for 30 different foods per week. He also discusses fasting, calorie restriction during chemotherapy, and the power of fiber and healthy fats. Dr. Brady covers various health practices like infrared saunas, detoxification, and water purification to support healing. Mixalhítsa7 Alison Pascal is a passionate Indigenous community leader, educator, and advocate based in British Columbia, Canada. She is a member of the Sk̲wxwú7mesh Úxwumixw and the Líl̓wat7ul Nations, and her career is focused on advancing the rights and interests of Indigenous peoples in her community and beyond. Alison is particularly interested in language revitalization, land stewardship, and cultural preservation and has worked extensively in these areas throughout her career.Mixalhítsa7's leadership and advocacy work have earned her several awards, including the Order of British Columbia and the Indspire Award, which recognizes outstanding Indigenous achievement in Canada. She has also served on several boards and committees related to Indigenous issues, including the First Peoples' Cultural Council and the Stó:lō Research and Resource Management Centre. Through her tireless work and dedication to Indigenous rights and cultural preservation, Mixalhítsa7 has become a respected and influential voice in her community and beyond. The podcast with Alison Pascal was a heart-wrenching conversation about the historical and current struggles of Indigenous communities in Canada. Pascal spoke about how the Canadian government's intervention in the lives of Indigenous people has caused them to suffer from alcohol consumption, drug use, and poor food management. It was not an accident, but a deliberate choice that resulted in intergenerational trauma affecting their physical and mental health. Pascal shared a story about how immigrant families were starving and freezing, but Indigenous nature helped them survive by teaching them how to farm. However, the Indigenous people were forced to side with the British to fight the French and Spanish, resulting in the loss of their land, which is now a commodity that can be sold. Today, Indigenous people are conditioned to stay inside and are denied access to gathering and foraging, leading to a loss of culture and spiritual connection to the land. The residential school system, which separated Indigenous children from their parents and land, led to a truth and reconciliation diet where children worked on school farms but were not allowed to eat the food, resulting in malnutrition and chronic diseases. Pascal questioned if it is possible to reprogram our bodies to not have chronic diseases and suggested the use of ancient medicines to maintain good health. The podcast also highlighted the issue of mental health stigma in Indigenous communities, which is exacerbated by the social aspects that white people see in Indigenous people, such as domestic violence, drug abuse, alcoholism, and gambling. Pascal spoke about the importance of a sustainable program to get kids onto the land to foster their interest in culture and the need for parents to be involved. Indigenous people are part of the land, and the land is part of them, but the spiritual loss has led to an autonomic economy that is split into unfarmable land, affecting their drinking water. Overall, the podcast highlighted the interconnectedness of intellectual, physical, mental, and emotional health, and how the wellbeing of Indigenous communities in Canada is essential for all living beings and the land. Pascal's emotional testimony left a lasting impact on listeners, calling for immediate action to address the long-standing issues affecting Indigenous people in Canada. Dr. Marie Mihalicz is a respected researcher, consultant, and founder of White Lightning Consulting, an organization committed to community-based healing and wellness retreats. She completed her Ph.D. at Royal Roads University, where her dissertation focused on Indigenous methods of healing and their potential for addressing the high rates of suicide and mental health issues in northern Saskatchewan communities. Her research findings have been used to influence policy change, with the aim of supporting sustainable, culturally relevant mental health services for Indigenous youth and families. Dr. Mihalicz and her team at White Lightning Consulting offer evidence-based healing and education programs that combine Western science and Indigenous healing methods. Through their collaborative community-based approach, they aim to empower Indigenous youth and families to pick up their knowledge bundles in today's world, strengthening and mobilizing community processes from the inside-out. In the face of the challenges posed by the pandemic and the complex intergenerational trauma experienced by Indigenous communities, Dr. Mihalicz and her team continue to work towards enhancing sustainable counseling supports and delivering effective leadership training workshops. In this 8th podcast of a nine part series, Marie Mihalicz discusses the importance of decolonizing trauma and healing the soul. She highlights how traditional ways of knowing are not recognized, and there are gaps in the mental health system that need to be addressed. Mihalicz emphasizes that trauma is passed down through blood, but so is healing, and it is essential to understand the historical links to trauma. She suggests that healing is in our DNA and that the delivery of mental health needs to change to include outdoor therapy, such as art therapy, breathwork, and hands-on ceremonies. Mihalicz believes that the biggest barriers to healing are the spiritual loss and the fact that traditional healing methods are not recognized by the current system. She emphasizes the need for protocols and boundaries around ceremonies, as well as space to sit down and talk about how we are doing. Mihalicz advocates for the use of traditional Indigenous practices in mental health treatment, such as prescribing ceremonies and mentorship through ceremony. She encourages people to learn about their history, stories, and intergenerational trauma, to talk about it and create safe spaces to heal. Finally, Mihalicz emphasizes that healing starts with the self, and one needs to heal oneself first before helping others. Dr. Milton Mills, MD is a practicing urgent care physician in the Washington DC area, with a focus on the use of nutritional measures to reduce the risk of major chronic diseases. He is an Associate Director of Preventive Medicine and a member of the National Advisory Board for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), where he has been a major contributor to position papers presented to the United States Department of Agriculture regarding Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Dr. Mills has published several research journal articles dealing with racial bias in federal nutrition policy and has been the lead plaintiff in PCRM's class action lawsuit that asks for warning labels on milk. He is also a frequent volunteer at free medical clinics and travels widely, speaking at hospitals, churches and community centers throughout the country. Dr. Mills was featured in the documentary “What the Health” and will also appear in the upcoming film “The Silent Vegan”. He is a strong advocate for plant-based eating and addressing cultural disruption in the food system, particularly in communities of color. Through his work, Dr. Mills aims to empower individuals to make informed decisions about their health and to promote the use of sustainable, plant-based diets for both personal and planetary health. Dr. Mills discusses the impact of cultural disruption on plant-based eating and health in the BIPOC community in Nicolette's seventh PhD Podcast. Dr. Mills explains that BIPOC communities have become dumping grounds for agricultural excess, leading to food scarcity and a lack of access to nutritious food. He advocates for the use of core crops, such as the Three Sisters (corn, beans, and squash), which provide good calories and adequate nutrition while also being sustainable and renewable. Dr. Mills highlights the historical impact of Western culture on the diets of POC, including the use of commodity crops, and how it has resulted in systemic and structural racism. He argues that Western medicine operates from a disease model and must change the way it practices medicine, as band-aids will not cure diseases. Dr. Mills emphasizes the importance of decolonizing our diet, mindset, and way of relating to the world to protect the planet and ourselves. He advocates for narrative medicine to address trauma and abuse and for doctors to unlearn bad habits and become part of the solution. Suzanne Methot is a highly accomplished author with an impressive track record in creating and applying equity and anti-oppression frameworks. Her non-fiction book, Legacy: Trauma, Story, and Indigenous Healing, has won several awards, and she has also co-authored the Grade 11 textbook Aboriginal Beliefs, Values, and Aspirations, and contributed to Scholastic's Take Action series of elementary classroom resource books. Suzanne's upcoming YA book, Killing the Wittigo: Indigenous Culture-Based Approaches to Waking Up, Taking Action, and Doing the Work of Healing, is set to be published in June 2023. In her interview on Nicolette's Fourth PhD podcast episode, Suzanne offers insights that go beyond the conventional risk factors cited by the government and scientists for disproportionate rates of diabetes and chronic disease in BIPOC communities. She provides a nuanced perspective on the impact of colonization, control, complex PTSD, voicelessness, intergenerational trauma, brain fog, monoculture, the credentials barrier, and multinational corporations' control over food security and inputs for growing. Suzanne debunks commonly held beliefs about poverty and the "thrifty gene" and explores the opportunities for creating a better future through re-learning, knowledge-sharing, consulting with those who hold cultural and ceremonial knowledge, and taking care of marginalized people. Dr. Adrianne Lickers Xavier is a remarkable academic who is currently serving as the acting Director of the Indigenous Studies Program at McMaster University, where she has made valuable contributions to the fields of Indigenous Studies and Anthropology. Dr. Xavier is a passionate and dedicated teacher who has designed and delivered courses in the areas of Contemporary Indigenous Issues, Indigenous Food Security and Food Systems, Indigenous Food Sovereignty, Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Methodologies. Dr. Xavier is a true scholar whose research interests include the study of Indigenous food security and sovereignty, Indigenous land connections and re-matriation, Indigenous food ways, and Indigenous ways of knowing. Her exceptional work in this area was recently recognized when she was awarded the new McMaster Indigenous Research Institute “Indigenous In-Community Scholar Fellowship” in 2020. This project aims to expand the understanding and capacity around food security and sovereignty in Dr. Xavier's community of Six Nations of the Grand River Territory. Her achievements were further recognized when she was awarded the prestigious Petro Canada McMaster Young Innovator Award for 2021-22, which allows undergraduates to engage in Indigenous research and focuses on building community. Dr. Xavier's appearance on Nicolette's first PhD podcast was a tour-de-force. She shared her insights on a range of issues, including the root causes of disease, food sovereignty versus food security, and the impact of colonization on access to nutritious foods that are part of one's heritage. She also touched on the ways in which racism acts as a barrier to food and disease, and how trauma can cause disease. Dr. Xavier underscored the importance of listening to our bodies and the foods it craves. She passionately believes that educating the next seven generations of people about food and history is vital, and that even social media can play a role in influencing the kinds of foods people are exposed to. Dr. Xavier's upbringing was centered around whole foods, as her mom grew everything or traded for other foods and she reflects on how this all changed when they moved to Canada. Dr. Psyche Williams-Forson is a distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of American Studies at the University of Maryland College Park. With a passion for material culture, Dr. Williams-Forson focuses her research on African Americans' lives in the United States from the late 19th century to the present. She is a multidisciplinary academic, serving as an affiliate faculty member of the Theatre, Dance, and Performing Studies, the Departments of Anthropology, African American Studies, The Harriet Tubman Department of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and the Consortium on Race, Gender, and Ethnicity. Her extensive research in this area employs cultural studies, intersectionality, and popular culture to inform our understanding of historical legacies of race and gender representation. In Nicolette's second PhD interview, Dr. Psyche discusses her doctoral research on the association between Black people and chicken, which turned into just one chapter of her broader research. Their conversation explores the foodways of Black people, Southern food, and the legacy of slavery, which resulted in African slaves' agricultural knowledge. The discussion also touches on the complexity of factors contributing to Black people's health, including trauma and violence, and how food choices are not solely responsible. They highlight the importance of understanding that choosing what to eat is a middle/upper-class conversation, and food shaming should be avoided. Instead, we need to consider factors such as taste, access, availability, affordability, and knowledge of how to prepare food. Dr. Psyche emphasizes that eating is a necessity, and we need to help people where they are. Dr. Breeze Harper, also known as Sistah Vegan, is a highly experienced diversity, equity, and inclusion expert with a PhD in the social sciences. Her work focuses on the intersections of food and racial and nutritional health justice, drawing on her background in cultural food geography and black feminist perspectives. In her interview with Nicolette on the third PhD Podcast, Dr. Harper shares her personal story of growing up with a master gardener father who taught her the importance of growing their own food, despite the loss of land around African Americans. Nicolette and Dr. Harper discuss the impact of monocultures and colonization on both people and soil in the United States, leading to a colonized microbiome and chronic disease. They delve into topics such as white supremacy, enslavement, industrialization, and the medical system's treatment of black people. Dr. Harper shares her journey of curing her fibroid tumors with a whole food plant-based diet and expresses her disappointment in the lack of BIPOC voices in the vegan community, as well as the contribution of capitalism in veganism to people's health and the fast-paced society we live in. Both Nicolette and Dr. Harper agree on the need for pure vulnerability from these voices and moving away from the individualism and monogamist nuclear family lives we live in. As a well renowned fitness expert, John Lewis has spent over 2 decades in the health and fitness industry and played Division I College basketball. John is highly passionate about not only his own health and fitness, but that of others as well. Today, John has taken his passion for health and is now directing his first feature length documentary focused on food and social justice. John has teamed up with the maker of the award winning “What The Health” to create their joint venture “They're Trying To Kill US”. The film follows co-director John Lewis from his beginnings as an adopted child from a crack-addicted birth mother, growing up as an overweight kid in the violence of Ferguson, Missouri, to becoming a prominent health and wellness advocate promoting compassion.Audiences journey with John as he crosses the country seeking answers to why Americans of Colour suffer from disproportionately higher rates of chronic disease than their European American counterparts, while examining the intersections of food, disease, race, poverty, institutional racism and government corruption. Through interviews with cultural influencers, doctors, researchers, politicians, attorneys, professional athletes, activists and experts in the field of food justice, John begins to unravel a story of collusion that has kept millions of US Americans sick, while the industries responsible make billions of dollars.Today, Nicolette engages in a conversation with John Lewis, delving into his remarkable journey from playing basketball to finding a new path towards wellness and purpose. The journey commenced in 2004 when the passing of a close friend compelled him to seek solutions for his own health issues, including IBS. By adopting a plant-based diet, he experienced a remarkable transformation within a mere two weeks, shedding inflammation and gaining newfound energy. However, the pivotal moment arrived when his mother was diagnosed with colon cancer, sparking his research into the link between lifestyle choices and diseases such as hypertension and heart disease. Through personal experiences and learning from the mistakes of others, he uncovered the ancient roots of veganism in Jainism, realizing that indigenous cultures had long embraced plant-based lifestyles. Along his path, he encountered pre-packaged vegan foods, which prompted him to transition towards whole foods, expanding his palate and understanding of diverse culinary traditions. Embracing his role as a catalyst for change, he founded the Badass Vegan movement, advocating for the planet, social justice, and personal well-being.With a focus on providing answers and promoting inclusivity, John tackles various topics, ranging from the disproportionate impact of food-related issues on Black communities to the manipulative tactics employed by insurance and fast-food companies. Through his film, "They're Trying to Kill Us," and his book, "Badass Vegan," his aim is to empower individuals to fuel their bodies, challenge the system, and live authentically. Join us on this transformative journey as we explore the history of veganism and discover how embracing a plant-based lifestyle can foster healing for ourselves and the world we inhabit. Remember, your "why" will serve as your guiding force on this path of transformation. Get ready to effect positive change and unleash your inner badass. Chantal Adams grew up with the teachings and Haida laws of respect and consent. Along her journey, she realized how important deep meaningful connections and conversations were to her: along with belonging and connection to community, land, and water. Wanting to continue building connections, in a healing way with people, Chantal pursued a degree in Child and Youth Care with an Indigenous Specialization. She became involved in re-search with Kinship Rising, that re-centers Indigenous ways of being through arts and land-based methodologies. It was through this journey that she found her passion for research and storytelling. It is Chantal's keen affection for people, nature, healing, reclamation, and belonging that drives her research and creative journey.Gabriel Swift has always been fascinated by the process of creating art. Intrigued by stories about the power of the natural world and the human condition, he witnesses how visual storytelling provides an outlet to share stories across cultures and generations that can make lasting impacts on our lives and the decisions we make. He has worked alongside an award-winning team as a cinematographer on the feature length film “Coextinction.” Everyone has a voice, a perspective, and a story, they just need to be heard. Gabriel's focus is on creating films that heal and foster connection to ourselves and the natural world. Nicolette partnered with Gabriel and Chantal on create two documentaries, 1) Grounded in My Roots and 2) Food of Our Ancestors which tell the stories of discovering food as medicine and Nicolette's journey running and biking across Canada to uncover the barriers that BIPOC peoples face in accessing clean real foods. Today's episode shares how Indigenous, Black, People of Colour (BIPOC) are disproportionally affected by chronic disease and how human and planetary healing can happen through re-connecting with food, the earth, ourselves, and our spirits. Chantal shares stories from her Haida Gwaii lineage and Gabriel shares how he was nurtured through spending time with his family in India. They discuss how their generation is choosing to live differently from the Baby Boomers that over consumed and how overconsumption led to the mental and physical health breakdowns and climate change that we see today. The first step: look to our Elders and to Nature. We need to connect to lineages and roots and bring them to the forefront if we are to heal ourselves. Widely known as “The Weight Loss Champion,” at just 5 feet 6 inches tall, Chuck Carroll weighed 420 lbs and had a 66-inch waist before radically changing his life. Before that, he tried and failed countless times to lose weight. Any success he achieved was short-lived as the weight he lost came pouring back on and then some. Out of desperation, he decided to have weight loss surgery in 2009. Chuck was just 27 years old at the time and didn't believe he would live to see 30. He thought at least he would go to his grave saying he tried everything. But then the unexpected happened. He decided after abusing his body for 27 years that it was time to look forward and never look back. Although a critical component, the procedure proved only to be the first step in his journey. In fact, he only attributes 10 percent of his long-term weight loss success to it. The rest he credits to a plant-based diet and changing his lifestyle! By adopting a plant-based diet, he is no longer afraid of regaining the weight as he had so many times before. He became a reporter where he covered sports and news for CBS and later NBC News Radio. He was also previously featured in PCRM's Teaming Up 4 Health campaign where he had the opportunity to speak on Capitol Hill and share his remarkable journey. Now he is delighted to be bringing his passion and talents to the Physicians Committee as host of The Exam Room™ podcast and to show others that the impossible is possible — you can get healthy! Chuck holds nothing back while sharing his weight loss story, and chronic depression, which started before he was 8 years old and continued until he was in his 30's with an addiction to Taco Bell. Chuck and Nicolette discuss the difference between Fat Shaming and weight loss for heath, how the health system has health advise but not always information on how to achieve a healthy life. He shares all the diets he tried and failed including the cookie diet, which led him to the conclusion that he had a food addiction. Chuck tells us about his weight loss surgery and about the advice he didn't take from his doctor eventually led him to a Whole Food Plant-Based diet. Jason Anthony is co-owner of MeeT vegan restaurants in Vancouver with his wife Linda and friend Ivo. Their mission is to help transition the mainstream to eating more plant-based foods in a friendly, accepting, and engaging venue. They have spent the last 20 years in Vancouver, owning and operating a total of 8 restaurants and organic grocery stores throughout the city. Jason is also founded Vegan Supply and their newest project Friend & Faux. Jason's vision for the world: a thriving vegan lifestyle and interacting differently with the world, to be part of the solution. At age 25, Jason was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease. The GI Doctors told him he would have it for life and that his food choices didn't matter. But this didn't resonate with him as he knew remission was possible. After reading Dr. Gottschall's book, Breaking the Vicious Cycle, he changed his diet and got results. This started Jason on a healing path that took many twists and turns which led him to being one of Canada's most ambitious and ground-breaking Vegan entrepreneurs. On today's podcast, Jason shares just how powerful the human body is in repairing and rebuilding itself. He teaches you how to reframe your relationship with food and how eating is truly a spiritual practice. Jason also raises the important differences between a plant-based and vegan lifestyle and how to support and grow small local vegan communities for the betterment of all. BE (Barbara) is the inventor of Alinker bikes, a vehicle for social change and creator of the “Reverse-Design” way of approaching the world. BE is a paradigm-shifter, edge-walker and developed the "Reverse-Design" life's practice.BE has gained appreciation of the power of community as a result of life-changing work in Afghanistan, Kenya, the Sudan, Ethiopia, Kosovo, and Indonesia. The common theme behind these projects is connecting people with each other by creating meaningful social contexts through which people can actively engage - based on who we are as humans. And based on who we chose to be.BE also founded The Alinker Family Farm, which is in existence since mid 2019. Together, BE's companies promote healthy living by building a community for people who are isolated and dismissed due to a disability. Alinker Bikes make activity and adventure possible and the Alinker Family Farm engages people in conversations about the food we grow and eat while building a community by us, for us. In this episode, BE and Nicolette come together to share how they are partnering to help the Alinker Community reverse chronic disease using the power of food as medicine. On today's podcast you can learn how food and mobility are linked and how you can participate in a community wide study where you'll learn how to heal yourself with metabolic nutrition. Other engaging topics discussed include disability and chronic disease in a broken health care system, how the western capitalistic world has lost its community to the economic world of transactions and how the system has dictated our lives, including race, gender, and disability, with the pandemic only magnifying this. BE provides hope and shares how Alinker Bikes is helping people liberate themselves from isolation and improves depression, chronic illness, loneliness and access to food. Natalie Forstbauer is a TEDx speaker, award-winning entrepreneur, author, traumatic brain injury (TBI) survivor and organic, biodynamic, regenerative farmer. She is passionate about human potential and seeing people live their best lives. A brain injury survivor of 16 years, she ignites hearts and connects people to what matters: to wake up and radically and gently turn trauma into triumph through compassion and grace. Raised on an organic biodynamic farm, trained in Polarity Therapy, alternative medicine, Neurofeedback and Transformational Leadership she brings a wealth of knowledge and life experience to her audiences and clients. She believes our health lies in our soil and advocates for eating a plant-rich diet full of real food from the earth. Naked. Unprocessed. Natalie shares her story of recovering from a traumatic brain injury that brought her to her knees. In her healing journey, she realises that recovery is not about merely fixing a bone or a broken system. It's about the compassion you have for yourself and embracing who we are. We need to be the change we want to see in the world but we also can't beat ourselves up in the process. Natalie's also shares her hope for Globalised Regeneration for the earth – which starts with healing the soil. While helping herself and others heal from their brain injuries, Natalie became aware that if we don't collectively heal the planet, there will be no brains to help! This prompted Natalie to launch and be the editor of Heart and Soil Magazine to teach others how to care for the land, repair the soil, and heal the planet. Elizabeth Harris, a devoted mother, author, and science-minded business owner with more than two decades of experience in the field of health and wellness. Elizabeth's scientific training, life experience, drive, and entrepreneurial spirit proved to be the very things that saved the life of both herself and her son after they were diagnosed with a rare and very serious auto immune condition. In 2008, Elizabeth's son came down with a common case of strep throat and after receiving antibiotics he seemed to be feeling better. But then, his behavior became erratic. After consulting numerous doctors, specialists and undergoing multiple tests, Elizabeth's son was diagnosed with Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections (PANDAS). They were prescribed psychiatric medication and then sent home. But then, her son got worse. He began having uncontrollable compulsions and ended up facing the justice system. Elizabeth shares her epic and emotional story of how she decided to take matters into her own hands to solve her son's mysterious health conditions. She dedicated several years of her life to finding the root cause of her son's illnesses and she's now helping thousands of people understand how many unexplainable autoimmune diseases go undiagnosed and how they can be treated in her book, What's Wrong With My Child. Other topics covered in this podcast: how and why the health system is broken, the atrocities of the US Juvenile Courts System and more. More about Elizabeth: For over two decades, Elizabeth has owned La Bella é Famosa Spa, a highly successful facial and body contouring spa in Nashville. She has also developed her own skincare line and cellulite reduction device. She is currently pursuing a Master's Degree in Molecular Medicine and has a degree in biology and chemistry from Murray State University with training in nutrition, physical fitness and cardiac rehab from the American College of Sports Medicine. Elizabeth is also the author of America is infected and What's Wrong With my Child which is real released this week. Dr. Bonnie J. Kaplan is a research psychologist, and Professor in the University of Calgary's Cumming School of Medicine. For many years she studied the role of nutrition in mental illness and brain development. Now, in retirement, her passion is to teach people how our diet influences our brain and mental health. She has written a book with Julia J. Rucklidge called ‘Better Brain: Overcome Anxiety, Combat Depression and Reduce ADHD and Stress with Nutrition'. This is a paradigm-shifting approach in using food and nutrients for treating mental disorders like anxiety, depression, and ADHD and they share their original, ground-breaking research with readers everywhere for the first time. On today's podcast Nicolette and Dr. Kaplan discus the link between the brain and nutrition and how micronutrients are the foundation for brain metabolism. We need to teach adults and kids that real food can make cells grow, develop and function which can resolve the symptoms in mental disorders. Brain and gut health are related and the best thing you can do for your brain is look after your gut microbiome. They also bring up the topic of money and people thinking they can't afford to eat well. Bonnie talks about the studies done by supplementing your diet with complex micronutrient pills and how effective it can be. “The brain needs the whole spectrum of everything you can give it in balance”. Dr. Arjun Rayapudi often shares with his patients - "I am a lifestyle surgeon. I can treat you with my surgical knife, or I can heal you with my chef's knife. You pick." He is certified by American Board of Surgery, American Board of Lifestyle Medicine and is a Fellow of Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He holds Plant Based Nutrition Certificate from Cornell University and Dr. McDougall's Starch Solution Certificate. Dr. Shobha Rayapudi is a physician, epidemiologist and researcher. She is certified by the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine. She holds a Medical degree from Rangaraya Medical College and a certification in Plant-Based Nutrition from Cornell University. She also holds a Master of Science degree in Epidemiology from Johns Hopkins University. Working as a clinical researcher at the Johns Hopkins Center for Clinical Trials, her principal scientific interests have been on the effects of nutrition in preventing and reversing chronic diseases. On todays podcast Nicolette talks to the Rayapudi Doctors about their journeys from physician and surgeon to holistic healers. After moving to Newfoundland and seeing an incredible high number of chronic diseases they couldn’t understand why everyone was so sick. Dr Arjun saw Forks over Knifes and couldn’t believe it could be so simple, so they began their own research and found it all to be true. There next job was to teach people to shift their perspectives and change their habits and as Dr Arjun said to his father when he needed heart surgery “instead of having your chest cut open why don’t you open your mouth and put different plant-based food in there?” With their non-profit organisation - Gift of Health they are showing thousands of people how to transition to Plant-based by not trying new foods but adjusting what you grew up with. “Have an open mind and an open mouth” Find Dr Arjun and Dr Shobha at: Website: www.giftofhealth.org Facebook: @giftofhealth.org Instagram: @giftofhealth_org You Tube: Gift of Health Discussed on the Podcast: Doc - Forks Over Knifes – www.forksoverknifes.com Dr Colin Campbell – www.nutritionstudies.org Dr Barnard – www.pcrm.org Dr Esselstyne – www.dresselstyn.com Dr McDougall – www.drmcdougall.com Elisabeth Kubler-Ross – Five Stages of Grief - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five_stages_of_grief Rich Roll Podcast – www.richroll.com/all-episodes/ Holistic Holiday Cruise – www.holisticholidayatsea.com Sherzai Team – www.teamsherzai.com Doc – CBC Plantify - https://gem.cbc.ca/media/absolutely-canadian/season-19/episode-7/38e815a-01150100d0a Three ingredients you need to do this journey - 1. Dr Esther Onyoni is a Pharmacist, diabetes health coach and a functional medicine practitioner. For 14 years she was an accessible health care provider, seeing people with diabetes get prescribed more and more medication, with wounds that would not heal, get essential medical procedures delayed until their blood sugar was under control and young people go blind. She became a diabetics health coach so that she could fill the gap and provide a plan or system, support and accountability to people falling through the cracks to help people get their numbers and conditions under control. As a result, Esther found that her clients felt more energised, reduced blood sugar, reduced stress, fewer doctor’s visits and had stronger immune systems. On today’s podcast Nicolette and Esther discuss the differences between their home countries in Africa and the North American health and lifestyles. North American having easy access to medication but Africa having the outside lifestyle, the downtime, the social. Esther tells us how she filled the gap she was seeing in the system, how the body can look after itself if you look after it. Esther teaches us the steps she takes with her patients and how simple it really can be, including food, stress, physical activity and sleep. Dr. Doug Pucci graduated from New York Chiropractic College, Long Island, NY, in 1987. His inspiration to be hands-on with patients and chart his own course as a clinician led him to open in private practice in 1990, in Oradell, NJ, where he still devotes himself to caring for patients using holistic, drug-free treatments. In his thirty years, he has become acutely aware of the limitations our current medical system has in treating chronic diseases using “conventional” methodology. In response to this, Dr. Doug Pucci began studying functional disciplines of medicine and neuro-endocrine-immunology together with testing technologies and nutraceutical supplements that are known to reverse disease. The root of his treatment philosophy is about asking relevant questions and discovering why systems are imbalanced. In addition to clinical observation and proper testing, Dr. Pucci also strives to educate patients by spending sufficient time with them explaining the results of their tests, while also supporting them in a broader lifestyle context. On today’s podcast Nicolette and Dr. Pucci discuss Covid, the health care system, chronic diseases, testing, sleep and more. Dr. Pucci is skilled at making the science relevant and relatable when he describes the nature of disease and the ways to reverse disease. When he works with his patients, he takes into consideration the entire body: the brain, central nervous system, spine, organs and glands, immune and endocrine systems and the nutritional chemistry for total healing. You’ll also better understand the role of inflammation in the body, the connection between the gut and the brain, and how 80% of your immune system is actually in your gut ultimately driving your immune system. Dr. Pucci also has a mini course that will take you deeper into the science of healing so that you, too, can achieve optimal health. Dr. Richard Jacoby, DPM has treated thousands of patients with peripheral neuropathy. Now, he shares his insights as well as the story of how he connected the dots to determine how refined processed sugar is the common denominator of many chronic diseases. In his book, Sugar Crush, he offers a unique holistic approach to understanding the exacting toll refined sugar and refined carbs take on the body. Based on his clinical work, he breaks down his highly effective methods, showing how dietary changes reducing refined sugar and wheat, coinciding with an increase of good fats, can dramatically help regenerate nerves and rehabilitate their normal function. Dr. Jacoby is one of the country’s leading peripheral nerve surgeons, specializing in progressive damage to the nerves that often results from diabetes. He has treated countless patients with the condition over the years and has successfully treated many patients who would have otherwise had to have an amputation. Today Nicolette and Dr. Jacoby talk about how refined sugar is affecting the body and making people more susceptible to illnesses, such as COVID-19. Dr. Jacoby also highlights how North American’s are eating a diet which has 90% fructose compared to primates and our ancestors who ate mainly whole-food carbs. You’ll discover that Diabetes, Alzheimer's, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Autism all have the same thing in common and you’ll learn all about what truly constitutes regenerative medicine and as well as the truth about stem cell therapy. Most importantly – learn first had that chronic disease is caused by diet and that the drugs we are given are simply a band aid when in fact, chronic illnesses are reversable with proper nutrition – AKA food. Dr. Lucy Lyons is a Vancouver based Physician, Neuroscientist, Autogenic Therapist, and International Wellness Champion. She qualified in Medicine and Neuroscience at University College London, UK and has 20 years of clinical experience. Lucy is also an active board member of Sea to Sky Thrivers, a Charity aimed at educating communities on how to use food as medicine to reverse chronic disease. After being diagnosed with melanoma, Dr. Lyons researched and began following a plant-based whole-foods diet to heal herself. Lucy and Nicolette discuss how she has always been interested in health and wellness and how Dr. Lyons’ research led her to discover the Gerson Therapy. Having witnessed a healthcare system filled with both fantastic and not-so-fantastic doctors, Dr. Lyons gained the empathy and motivation to become the caring doctor she is today. Nicolette and Lucy also discuss how to overcome the shame and ridicule that is often projected when when you decide to take care of yourself holistically. Lucy leaves us with these wise words to empower us to take control of our own health: “You are living with an ancient body and mind in a modern world”. Dr. Lyons also instructs her patients in Autogenics - Mental training exercises resulting in emotional off-loading. Patients learn to deactivate their sympathetic nervous system and work towards realising their authentic selves. On today’s episode, Nicolette and Eric discuss how he nearly lost his eyesight because of type 2 diabetes. Instead of googling ‘how to live with diabetes’ as recommended by doctors, Eric instead did a Google search: ‘how to reverse Diabetes’. This launched Eric into a whole food plant-based journey and he successfully reversed his diabetes completely. Eric is now working with schools and other community groups throughout Brooklyn to support them in learning about plant-based wholefoods as medicine. Tune in now to hear more about the incredible work that Eric is doing to heal the American diet and lifestyle. And definitely pick up a copy of Eric’s book, Healthy At Last: A Plant-Based Approach to Preventing and Reversing Diabetes and Other Chronic Illnesses Eric Adams is the Brooklyn Borough President and on his own, figured out the formula to reverse his diabetes. Since then, he’s been redesigning communities and setting up systems to support his greater community in tackling the chronic disease epidemic in New York. Eric graduated at the top of his class from the New York City Police Academy. After serving with the New York City Transit Police Department, he transferred to the New York City Police Department (NYPD) and retired with the rank of Captain after a 22-year law enforcement career. His next foray into public service came when he was elected to the first of four terms in the New York State Senate in 2006. From this position, he represented a diverse range of neighborhoods across Brooklyn. In 2013, Brooklynites elected Eric as the first person of color to serve as their Borough President where he is currently serving his second term as Brooklyn’s Chief Executive.
