In this episode I talk to Maui's own Kevin Brown. A slack key guitarist and vocalist, Uncle Kevin has been weaving Hawaiian sounds since the early 70s with his band, The Waiʻehu Sons. Now primarily a solo artist, we chatted about his start in music, gigging and recording in the 70s, and how to sound Hawaiian.- Uke Logic strings: https://theukulelesite.com/accessories/strings/ukelogic-strings.html- Kimo Hussey: https://www.youtube.com/user/KimoHusseyUkulele/videos- Jason Jerome/Lahaina Music: https://www.lahainamusicmaui.com/ - Kani Ka Pila Project: https://www.kanikapilaproject.org/Support the Show.Join my newsletter! Show Notes and Links: https://ukuleleunderground.com/2021/09/triplet-threat-tuup32/ The "Masters" are back this week to show you how to "Master" the Ukulele (not really). The guys open the podcast by explaining why they don't like to use the word, "Master." A Student Review kicks off a discussion on Wah Pedals. Another member asks the team what are their favorite ukulele instrumentals? With so many choices, Aldrine manages to narrow it down to his top 5. Aaron gives a more personal answer, and Kahai names his Top 2 instrumentals while escaping the cops. Someone challenges Aldrine's "Master" credentials by asking about the Hawaiian Triplet, Tin Pan Alley Triplet and Kimo Hussey? This also brings up who Aldrine would add to his Infinity Gauntlet of Ukulele Teachers. The podcast ends with reminders of the UU+ Giveaway, Seasons of the Ukulele Contest, Special Guest, and Songwriting Challenge.

Welcome to Uketropolis, a podcast with real ukulele answers to real ukulele questions. I'm your host, James Hill. I'm a lifelong ukulele player, teacher and believer in the power of ukulele to make positive change in the world. I've written and co-written several ukulele methods including Booster Uke, The Ukulele Way and Ukulele in the Classroom. I'm also the co-founder of the JHUI Teacher Certification Program and in 2019 I brought all of these education projects into one place and called it Uketropolis.com. Thousands of students worldwide have formed a warm, supportive learning community around these resources and what I do every week in this podcast is I choose a few real student questions from Uketropolis.com and offer my suggestions and thoughts on those questions.I want to take a moment to acknowledge that I'm a third-generation Canadian ukulele player and that many players and teachers have paved the way for the work I've done as a teacher, player and author. First, thank you to the Godfather of Canadian ukulele, my friend and mentor, J. Chalmers Doane, my childhood teachers Jamie Thomas and Peter Luongo and many others along the way who kept the ukulele flame alive long before the third wave. Thank you Bonnie Smith, Bill Wallace, Warren Dobson, Cam Trowsdale, Lorna MacPhee, Marven Shields, Jody Wood, Vince and Charlene Sequeira, Tina Horwood and so many other devoted ukulele educators. A special thank you to my teachers and friends in Hawaii who inspired me and, long ago, embraced this young Canadian ukulele player and welcomed "Kimo Pu'u" into their musical 'ohana: Ohta-san, Herb Ohta Jr., Kimo Hussey, Byron Yasui, Benny Chong, Ledward Kaapana, Dennis Kamakahi, Roy and Kathy Sakuma. Everything I know about ukulele has been shaped by what you've shown me and I'm very grateful to pass on some of that knowledge and aloha in this podcast.Thank you for listening and I'll see you in Episode 1!
Kimo Hussey I finally got to meet this ukulele hero of mine. Kimo is a mighty fine player and teacher. We sat down in Manoa in July and talked story about moveable chord shapes, expensive ukes, baritones vs tenors, and plenty more.A few builders mentionedLichtyDevineHere are some videos of Kimo playing and teaching.Intro and outro music is by Blue Dot SessionsSupport the podcast through the tip jarOr Buy Me A CoffeeSend us your feedback online: https://pinecast.com/feedback/abes-ukulele-podcast/0d6fcf5e-9721-4844-ba75-6dd7058c7751
Ep 19.47 Kimo Hussey Aaron Crowell Part 1 by Andrew Kitakis
This Friday, the fifth annual New Jersey Uke Fest – that's Uke as in Ukulele – begins at the Ukrainian American Cultural Center in Whippany. This weekend of concerts and workshops ends on Sunday with a big outdoor “Uke Jam” on the Morristown Green in Morristown, New Jersey. Chris Benincasa recently spoke with one of the festival's organizers, Fil Wisneski, about what happens when hundreds of ukulele players congregate, and the distinct musical styles of featured artists Kimo Hussey, Rachel Manke and Danielle Ate The Sandwich.
