CBS Sports just ranked the 49ers' triplets — Brock Purdy, Christian McCaffrey, and Mike Evans — 8th in the NFL. When these three are healthy and operating inside Kyle Shanahan's system, there isn't a more dangerous offensive trio in football. Purdy is on the verge of owning the NFL's all-time career passer rating record. McCaffrey led the league in touches last season, put up 2,126 scrimmage yards, and forced more missed tackles than any back in football — by ten. And Mike Evans is a future Hall of Famer who has never had a season under 1,000 receiving yards. The 8th ranking exists because of injury history and questions about system dependency — and we're going to address both of those arguments head on. Drop your takes in the chat. Where do the 49ers' triplets actually rank when everyone is healthy and Shanahan is cooking?

One in 500 000 pregnancies happens without fertility treatment and results in quads. Sam Smith is living that statistic right now, 23 weeks pregnant with four babies she never expected. On this week's episode of Sense by Meg Faure we sit down with Sam Smith, who is 23 weeks into a spontaneous quad pregnancy, alongside returning guest Tasha, our resident multiples nurse. Sam and her partner Jan already have a toddler son, Teddy. They were hoping for one more baby. Instead, an eight week scan revealed four. Sam walks us through that first scan in detail. She describes watching her doctor's expression change as he kept counting. Twins became triplets. Triplets became quads. There was no IVF involved. Sam's honesty about the first trimester, the sleepless nights after the diagnosis, and the sheer physical discomfort of carrying four babies makes this one of the most human conversations we've had on the podcast. If you've ever wondered what a spontaneous quad pregnancy actually looks like day to day, this episode answers it. IN THIS EPISODE YOU'LL LEARN How a routine eight week scan turned into a quad diagnosis, and what that moment felt like for Sam and her partner Jan. The difference between monochorionic (shared placenta) and dichorionic twins, and why it matters for risk. What twin to twin transfusion is and why the 24 week mark is a milestone in multiples pregnancies. How delivery planning works for quads, including hospital selection by gestational week and NICU team size. Practical breastfeeding strategies for multiples: pumping, donor milk, tandem feeding, and combination feeding. Why "getting help" isn't a compromise, it's the plan, according to multiples nurse Tasha. ABOUT THE GUEST Sam Smith is currently 23 weeks into a spontaneous quad pregnancy, expecting four babies with no fertility treatment involved. She lives in Cape Town with her partner Jan and their toddler son, Teddy. Sam is sharing her pregnancy in real time, from the shock of the diagnosis through to preparing for delivery and life with five children under three. Eric interviews his twenty-year-old apprentice, Jacob Orduno, as part of a series titled "Look Inside the Machine." The conversation highlights Jacob's exceptional work ethic and "old soul" demeanor, attributes that have allowed him to thrive in a demanding construction and ranching environment. They explore the importance of clear expectations and personal accountability, contrasting Jacob's dedication to long-term mentorship with the short-term financial focus of his peers. Triplet reflects on his own leadership evolution, specifically his shift toward investing heavily in his team's growth and organizational culture.  Key Takeaways: Prioritize long-term mentorship and growth opportunities over immediate, higher-paying jobs that offer no clear path toward your ultimate dreams. Present yourself with professional excellence and integrity in every situation to reflect your personal values and maintain a high standard of character. Actively observe and analyze the behaviors and decision-making processes of experienced leaders to gain valuable insights that cannot be learned through traditional instruction. View constructive criticism and the need to redo work as essential learning moments that help align your performance with a higher standard of quality. Maintain a long-term perspective by focusing on your ultimate vision rather than rushing major life decisions or settling for short-term comfort.

The conversation highlights the importance of focus, referencing advice from business leaders like Warren Buffett to eliminate distractions and prioritize a core mission. Both men explore how effective delegation and empowering a trusted team are essential for scaling without suffering from burnout.  Key Takeaways: Identify your top interests and eliminate the majority to focus your energy on the two most impactful goals rather than being mediocre at ten. Empower your team by delegating decision-making authority so that the business can continue to grow and function effectively without you being the bottleneck for every task. Prune back projects or business branches that are draining your resources and distracting you from your primary mission and core passions. Prioritize mastering and scaling a single mission before attempting to diversify into unrelated industries that can dilute your brand and expertise. Share your vision and offer performance-based incentives to motivate team members to take ownership of their roles and drive the business forward.

Daily Emunah Podcast - Daily Emunah By Rabbi David Ashear

One of the most beautiful ways that Hashem shows His love for His children is through the hearts of other Jews. Although Hashem alone performs every yeshuah, many times He chooses to do it through people who open their hearts and willingly become His messengers. Every act of chesed is much more than one person helping another. It is Hashem's kindness flowing through the hands of one of His children. A man whom we'll call Alan told me that 25 years ago, someone knocked on his door and entered his home crying uncontrollably. After calming him down, the man explained that he had been married for nine years. He had a very happy marriage and loved his wife dearly, but because they had not been blessed with children, and apparently the medical issue was with him, she had reached the point where she wanted a divorce. He had gone to Hadassah Hospital in Israel for one last attempt, and he was told there that perhaps there was one specialist in Brooklyn who might be able to help. But after years of treatments, the couple had used up every last penny they had. The doctor's fee was $28,000, and they had no way to pay for it. The man had come to Alan to ask for financial help. Alan immediately assured him that he would take care of the money one way or another. After the man left, Alan called his daughter, whose husband knew the doctor, and asked her to see what could be done. His daughter contacted a generous individual and explained the situation. Without even taking time to think, the philanthropist replied, "I'll pay for the entire procedure. Tell the Dr. to bill me the $28,000, but don't tell the couple who paid. I want to remain anonymous." With that, the treatments began. About six weeks later, the doctor shared the wonderful news that the wife was expecting. Soon afterward, they found out she was carrying twins, and a short time later they discovered it was actually triplets. After nine years of waiting, the couple was blessed with three healthy babies—the only children they would ever have.Twenty-five years later, baruch Hashem, all three are married. When the anonymous donor heard the news of the birth, he was overjoyed. "Triplets? I can't believe it! They're going to need even more help now." Without even being asked, he contributed again. He gave a check for $5,000 to help with the expenses of the babies. Alan, who had answered the knock on his door that day, also wanted to participate financially. He asked his daughter to find out who the anonymous donor was so that he, too, could share in the zechut of bringing these three precious neshamot into the world. The donor insisted on remaining anonymous, but he agreed to let Alan participate by sending in a contribution. The triplets were certainly a miracle, but there is another inspiring lesson here as well. Look how these Jews responded to another person's pain. Nobody asked, "What's in it for me?" No one hesitated because the amount was too large. They saw another Jew suffering and did whatever they could to help. Perhaps it was their mesirut nefesh that became the catalyst for these miraculous babies to come into the world. Hashem could have brought this couple their yeshuah in many different ways, yet He chose to bring it through the kindness of His people. He gave one Jew the opportunity to open his door and lend a listening ear, another the opportunity to make a phone call, another the opportunity to give generously, and a doctor the opportunity to become a shaliach. Hashem allowed each of these people to become His partners in bringing three precious children into the world. Every act of chesed creates far more than we can imagine. We never know how many lives will be changed because we chose to help another person. When we open our hearts to our fellow Jews, we become the hands through which Hashem's infinite kindness is revealed in this world.

Eric uses the Kentucky Derby as a powerful metaphor for entrepreneurial persistence and personal growth. He highlights the story of a horse named Golden Tempo and its trainer, the first woman to win the race, to demonstrate that a poor starting position does not dictate one's ultimate success. Triplet argues that contractors and business owners often feel defeated by current hardships, but he insists that mental resilience and internal dialogue are the keys to a late-game victory. By focusing on discipline and belief rather than early-stage sprinting, individuals can overcome long odds and industry skepticism.  Key Takeaways: Don't let your current position in life or business dictate where you will finish or define your ultimate potential. Master your internal dialogue by talking to yourself with the determination to win instead of just trying to avoid failure. Embrace persistence and realize that history does not care how old you are or how long it takes for you to reach your goals. Pursue your vision without seeking permission from competitors, family members, or industry critics who may doubt your path. Maintain a steady and disciplined pace to endure long-term pressure rather than burning out from an unsustainable early sprint.

In this episode, Eric uses Justin Bieber's career trajectory to provide motivational insights for contractors and entrepreneurs. Triplet parallels these celebrity struggles with the financial and personal hardships faced by tradesmen, such as bankruptcy and burnout. He urges his audience to stop hiding their vulnerabilities and instead return to their authentic roots to rebuild their businesses. Key Takeaways: Embrace your failures and setbacks as necessary opportunities to rebuild a stronger and more authentic version of yourself. Strip away the need to impress others and focus on being raw and vulnerable to build real trust with your audience. Reconnect with your original passion and roots to maintain your identity and ground yourself during difficult transitions. Prioritize strategic "chess moves" and smart planning over simply trying to work harder or grind through your problems. How to Build a Church - Part 1

Hope Church Johnson City

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 19, 2026 42:52

What does it really mean to build a church that reflects the heart of God? Romans 12:9-13 gives us a blueprint that has nothing to do with buildings, budgets, or branding, and everything to do with the condition of our hearts. We're challenged to examine whether our love is genuine or hypocritical, whether we're truly hating evil while clinging to what is good. The early Roman Christians faced persecution for refusing to participate in the violent entertainment of the Colosseum, willing to die rather than compromise their convictions about the sanctity of human life. Their example forces us to ask uncomfortable questions about our own entertainment choices and cultural compromises. The passage moves outward from personal character to how we treat one another in the church, calling us to outdo each other in showing honor rather than seeking it for ourselves. We're reminded that discipleship isn't complicated—it's simply showing someone who doesn't know what we do how to do what we do. The triplet of rejoicing in hope, being patient in affliction, and being constant in prayer reminds us that God hears every prayer offered according to His will, even when we're crying out from our own dark caves like David did. The most comforting songs ever written came from the darkest places, teaching us that our afflictions may have purposes beyond what we can see.**SERMON NOTES – Romans 12:9–12 – “How to Build a Church, Part 1”**---### I. The Flow of Romans 12 - Chapters 1–11: Doctrine. - Chapter 12: Practice—radiating outward:  - v9 – Character (heart)  - vv10–13 – Church  - vv14–21 – Culture  - ch.13 – Civics ---### II. Triplet #1 – v9: Heart Posture **“Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.”** 1. **Let love be genuine (without hypocrisy)**   - No fake “churchy” love (“I love them in the Lord” but actually resent them).   - Jesus and Judas: a kiss of betrayal as a picture of hypocritical love.   - God's love to us is genuine; ours toward others must reflect that.2. **Abhor what is evil**   - Love and hate are connected:    - Love my wife → hate what harms the marriage.    - Love truth → hate lies.   - Evil = what is anti-God; Scripture defines what God hates (e.g., Prov 6).   - Romans believers refused violent “entertainment” of the Coliseum; were persecuted for it.3. **Hold fast to what is good**   - “Koleo” – glue yourself to good; active pursuit, not just passive avoidance.   - Culture desensitizes (pumpkin/duck & frog/boiling water illustrations).   - Early Christians chose costly conviction over easy compromise.---### III. Triplet #2 – v10–11: Church Life **“Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.”** - Honor = lead in preferring others, pushing them forward. - Model: leaders who serve (Ezek 34 – God rebukes shepherds who feed themselves). - Jesus hates “Nicolaitan” spirit: overbearing leaders/laity (Rev 2:6). - True leadership: elders serving meals, men of high status doing lowly tasks. - Discipleship = show others how to do what you do, then release them (Apollos & Priscilla/Aquila; Paul's attitude toward Apollos). **“Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord.”** - Never lazy; work hard; serve enthusiastically. - “Sunday comes whether you're ready or not” – faithfulness in preparation. - Every “small” task (coffee, parking, kids' ministry) is a spiritual service when done unto the Lord. - Warning: don't serve in a controlling, joyless way that repels helpers.---### IV. Triplet #3 – v12: Suffering & Prayer **“Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.”** 1. **Rejoice in hope** – confidence in God's promises not yet seen (Heb 11:1). 2. **Patient in tribulation** – Bible assumes suffering, doesn't erase it.   - Roman believers faced lions and fires; ours may be different but real. 3. **Constant in prayer** – steady, honest pouring out of the heart (Psalms as model).   - Many Psalms (e.g., David in caves) birthed from deep affliction.   - Prodigal son: father doesn't follow into sin, but never stops praying and watching.---## PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS1. Identify one relationship where your “love” has been hypocritical; confess and seek a step toward genuine love. 2. Audit your media/entertainment: what are you being desensitized to? Choose one concrete change this week. 3. Look for one person in church to honor publicly or privately—email, text, or conversation that pushes them forward. 4. If you serve, invite someone to do it with you and intentionally show them how. Move from “worker” to “discipler.” 5. Name one ongoing affliction; commit to a simple daily prayer rhythm (e.g., morning & night) for it for 30 days. ---## DISCUSSION QUESTIONS1. Where are you most tempted to show “polite hypocrisy” instead of genuine love? 2. How do you practically distinguish between loving people and hating evil? 3. What forms of entertainment do you think most dull our hatred of evil today? 4. Who has honored or discipled you in the church, and how did it shape you? 5. Are you more prone to laziness or to over-controlling in service? Why? 6. What “cave” season have you walked through, and how did God meet you there? 7. What long-term prayer have you nearly given up on, and how might Romans 12:12 call you to persevere?

In the 1960s and 70s, a secret psychological study set out to answer one of humanity's biggest questions: Are we shaped by nature… or nurture? Led by child psychiatrist Peter Neubauer and hidden behind the respected adoption agency Louise Wise Services, identical twins—and even triplets—were deliberately separated at birth and placed into different families… without anyone's knowledge. Years later, three brothers—Robert Shafran, Eddy Galland, and David Kellman—accidentally found each other, triggering a media frenzy and a story that seemed almost too unbelievable to be real. But behind the headlines was something much darker. Hidden records. Secret observations. Lives treated like experiments. And a truth locked away for decades. Tonight, we dig into The Neubauer Experiment—a study that didn't just observe human behavior… it manipulated it. Because when science crosses the line into playing God…who pays the price? Listen. Learn. Laugh. Question everything. Eric emphasizes the critical distinction between setting goals and managing priorities. He argues that many business owners struggle because their daily schedules do not reflect their stated ambitions, suggesting that calendar management is the ultimate indicator of one's true values. Through personal anecdotes, Triplet describes how he recently pivoted his financial targets and delayed a book project to remain aligned with his core business objectives. He warns against "squirrel moments," or tempting distractions that offer minor gains but derail long-term strategic growth.  Key Takeaways: Review your calendar regularly to ensure your daily schedule reflects your actual priorities rather than just keeping you busy. Give yourself permission to pivot your financial and professional goals when new information or experiences change your perspective. Replace vague core values with specific, actionable characteristics like accountability and discipline to better align your team with your mission. Evaluate every new opportunity against your primary targets to avoid "squirrel moments" that act as distractions from your long-term objectives. Keep your written goals physically with you at all times to review them every morning and night to maintain a focused mindset.

In this episode, Eric and his colleagues discuss the necessity of defining specific goals when attending professional conferences. While staying at a unique headquarters in San Antonio for the Sponsor Games, the group emphasizes that most attendees fail to see a return on investment because they lack a strategic game plan. Triplet explains his methods for proactive networking, such as using intentional "elevator pitches" and analyzing a room to identify valuable assets. The conversation highlights the importance of building authentic, long-term brand partnerships rather than seeking superficial sponsorships. The Podhouse group asserts that successful event attendance requires disciplined execution and a clear vision of what defines success before the trip even begins. Key Takeaways: Define exactly what success looks like before attending an event to ensure you achieve a measurable return on your investment of time and money. Develop a concise elevator pitch that clearly explains your value proposition to capture interest within the first few seconds of a conversation. Focus on building long-term, loyal partnerships with brands and collaborators rather than chasing short-term or superficial deals. Identify and lean into a specific niche to differentiate yourself from competitors and attract a more dedicated and relevant audience. Approach networking with intentionality by asking open-ended questions and proactively seeking out individuals who align with your strategic goals.

A three-way tug-of-war isn’t a common sight – unless you look toward the constellation Leo. Three galaxies there are tugging at one another, producing some spectacular results. The galaxies are M65, M66, and NGC 3628 – the Leo Triplet. All three galaxies are about the same size as our home galaxy, the Milky Way. And each may resemble the Milky Way – a beautiful spiral with a long “bar” of stars across its middle. The triplets are close enough together that the gravity of each galaxy exerts a strong pull on the others. That’s given M66 a slightly “wonky” look. The galaxy’s core is a little off-center. Its spiral arms are loosely wound, and they aren’t symmetrical. And the arms are lined with knots of starbirth. Some of the stars in these regions are huge. Such a star burns out quickly, then explodes as a supernova. And since 1973, we’ve seen five supernovas in M66 – compared to zero in the Milky Way. We see NGC 3628 edge-on, so it’s hard to know its exact shape. What we do see is a lane of dark dust sandwiched between brighter layers. We also see a “tail” that’s 300,000 light-years long – three times the size of the galaxy itself. It’s a ribbon of stars pulled out by the other galaxies in their ongoing “tug-of-war.” Leo is in the east at nightfall. The triplet is to the upper right of Denebola, the star at the lion’s tail. It’s an easy target for a small telescope. Script by Damond Benningfield

Eric interviews Steve Weldon, a product specialist from Vermeer, during the ConExpo trade show in Las Vegas. The conversation focuses on the technical advantages of mini skid steers, highlighting features such as chariot-style platforms for operator safety and toolless access panels for easy maintenance. Triplet openly shares his contractor regret over previously purchasing a competitor's machine, noting that Vermeer's versatile attachments and superior lift capacity make them ideal for tight residential jobsites. The episode also emphasizes the high resale value and durability of these machines, positioning them as essential investments for growing trade businesses. Key Takeaways:  Research and select equipment that specifically fits your operational needs, such as compact machinery designed for navigating tight residential spaces. Prioritize tools and machinery that offer easy, toolless maintenance to minimize downtime and prevent messy repairs while on a client's property. Evaluate the safety and stability features of your equipment, focusing on designs that protect the operator and provide stability on uneven terrain. Consider the long-term resale value and durability of a brand before making a significant investment in new business assets. Eric addresses a client's critique that his recent business decisions—specifically adding a Belgian Malinois to his crew—constitute "jumping the shark." Triplet uses this pop-culture reference to explain that what spectators perceive as a desperate or gimmicky decline is actually a strategic evolution for his brand. He reveals that the dog serves as both a security detail against death threats and a safety measure in rattlesnake-prone job sites, illustrating the gap between public perception and leadership reality. By reflecting on past risks, such as signing a million-dollar lease during a recession, he argues that true growth often looks like madness to those outside the process. The episode is a motivational call for leaders to embrace bold risks and ignore the discomfort of onlookers while leveling up their professional capabilities.  Key Takeaways: Embrace the discomfort of growth even when spectators or skeptics suggest that you have lost your way. Evaluate your major life decisions based on whether they expand your capabilities rather than just adding noise. Take calculated risks that align with your long-term vision, even when the timing feels uncertain or scary. Invest in your own development by teaching others, which forces you to become a better communicator and leader. Surround yourself with a community of growth-minded individuals who provide the peer pressure needed to reach the next level.

Today Eric argues that a company's primary challenge is not marketing or pricing, but rather the quality of its people. Drawing on leadership principles from Natalie Dawson, he describes a rigorous behavioral filtering process used at a recent job fair to identify high-performance candidates. Triplet emphasizes that technical skills are secondary to cultural alignment, noting that he disqualified the majority of applicants for failing to research the company or demonstrating poor professional etiquette. By treating teamwork as a filter rather than a feeling, he asserts that elite teams are built through high standards and high-volume interviewing.  Key Takeaways: Research the company thoroughly before any interview to demonstrate your commitment and alignment with their mission. Prioritize character and behavior over technical skills when building a team, as technical gaps are often easier to train than poor attitudes. Pay close attention to small details and habits, such as punctuality and how you conduct yourself in public, because they reflect your overall work ethic. Increase your volume of interactions and interviews to ensure you are selecting elite performers rather than simply filling a position with a warm body. Be specific about your goals and expectations to show that you are a decisive individual with a clear sense of direction and purpose.
