Gesù in molti modi e costantemente manifestava la sua grandezza e l’autenticità della sua missione, anche con la forza della Parola. Ancora dodicenne aveva stupito i dottori nel tempio per la sua sapienza. La gente semplice avvertiva che “Egli insegnava loro come uno che ha autorità, e non come gli scribi”. Aveva interrogato i suoi sulla via di Damasco: “Chi dice la gente che io sia?”. La risposta degli apostoli è sostanzialmente identica a quella che leggiamo nel vangelo di oggi: “Alcuni fra la gente dicevano: «Costui è davvero il profeta!». Altri dicevano: «Costui è il Cristo!». Altri invece dicevano: «Il Cristo viene forse dalla Galilea?”. Era però dominante in molti lo stupore e l’ammirazione. Per questo l’ordine di arrestarlo non viene eseguito dalle guardie: “Nessuno mise le mani su di lui”. Danno anche la motivazione: «Mai un uomo ha parlato così!». Appare poi la figura di Nicodemo, difensore solitario di Gesù; egli si appella a un principio di giustizia: «La nostra Legge giudica forse un uomo prima di averlo ascoltato e di sapere ciò che fa?». Se facessimo un’indagine, anche limitata al nostro mondo così detto cristiano cattolico, anche ai nostri giorni sentiremmo le stesse alterne risposte. Sicuramente sappiamo che, come allora, non mancano propositi di violenza e reali persecuzioni. Si sta ancora puntualmente avverando quanto lo stesso Gesù aveva predetto: “Se hanno perseguitato me, perseguiteranno anche voi”. Anche a noi però non manca la forza dello Spirito Santo e la certezza della parola: “Ma, quando vi consegneranno, non preoccupatevi di come o di che cosa direte, perché vi sarà dato in quell’ora ciò che dovrete dire: infatti non siete voi a parlare, ma è lo Spirito del Padre vostro che parla in voi”. Così la Chiesa, i credenti di oggi e di sempre sperimentano dove viene la sua vera ricchezza e la sua perenne vitalità: “Il sangue dei martiri, diceva Tertulliano, genera seme di nuovi cristiani”. Questa verità sgorga dalla croce, dal martirio di Gesù ed è sempre vera anche a livello personale; la nostra croce rende feconda la nostra vita. I sacrifici di oggi uniscili al sacrificio della Croce.
