BATMAN TO BRUCE LEE: George Fitzgerald's Martial Arts Journey George Fitzgerald: A Martial Arts Journey from Batman to Bruce Lee In our latest podcast episode, we had the pleasure of speaking with George Fitzgerald, a seasoned martial artist whose journey is nothing short of inspiring. From his early days of being inspired by Batman and Bruce Lee to mastering multiple martial arts disciplines, George's story is a testament to passion, dedication, and the eternal quest for mastery. Andrew Staton asks the questions; George's journey into martial arts began at a very young age. "From the age of four I've been a Batman fan and I used to see Batman in the comics doing this weird stuff called karate jiu jitsu," he recalls. The influence of iconic figures like Elvis Presley and Bruce Lee further fueled this early fascination with martial arts. At the age of twelve, after watching Bruce Lee's "Fist of Fury," George knew that martial arts was his path in life. Over the years, George has trained in various martial arts disciplines, including judo, aikido, Wing Chun, Muay Thai, and Russian Sambo, among others. His dedication to martial arts is evident in his relentless pursuit of knowledge and mastery. "I just want to be the best martial artist I can be, so that then I can help anyone I teach to be the best martial artist they can be," he explains. One of the key philosophies that George holds dear is the effectiveness of martial arts in self-defence. "My number one premise of doing a martial art is, is this effective in self defence?" he states. This focus on practicality and real-world application has guided his training and teaching methods throughout his career. George's journey is also marked by his encounters with legendary martial artists such as Joe Lewis, Bill Wallace, and Chuck Norris. His relationship with Joe Lewis, in particular, left a lasting impact. "Bruce Lee was the greatest martial arts teacher he ever knew, without a doubt," George shares, reflecting on Joe's admiration for Bruce Lee. Despite his extensive experience and numerous accolades, George remains humble and refers to himself as the "eternal white belt." This mindset of continuous learning and growth is what keeps him motivated and passionate about martial arts. "Even now, I'm kind of getting all animated. That's why I can't actually put my finger on what it is. It just makes me feel like, you know, let's get up and train now," he says with enthusiasm. As George continues to train and teach, he remains a beacon of inspiration for martial artists around the world. His story is a reminder that martial arts is not just about physical prowess but also about cultivating a warrior spirit and a lifelong commitment to self-improvement. SIFU George Fitzgerald is the former President, Founder & Master Instructor of the Tang Lung Combat Academy from 1989 – 2012. Among his many credentials, he is a qualified instructor under THREE of Bruce Lee's very best students! He has been studying and practicing formal Martial Arts for the last 50 years, starting in 1973 with Judo at age eleven. But his real introduction to the ‘fighting arts' was from the age of seven in the form of boxing and self-defence ‘tips' from his father – Bill Fitzgerald, a man who was definitely no stranger to ‘street survival' – in fact, he was known to many simply as ‘The Bouncer!' BURTON CUMMINGS THE LEGENDARY VOICE OF THE GUESS WHO 'THE LOST INTERVIEWS' EPISODE 10 Burton Cummings is the legendary voice, songwriter, and keyboardist for Canada's own classic rock superstars The Guess Who. Although the group has had numerous personnel changes throughout the years, the most prominent members have been Burton Cummings and guitarist Randy Bachman.  Cummings was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. His first band was an R&B group called The Deverons. The band released two singles on the REO Records label.  In 1965, Cummings joined The Guess Who replacing Bob Ashley on keyboards and eventually Chad Allan on vocals. The Guess Who scored commercially with their first international hit “These Eyes” (#6 Billboard Hit) in 1969. The track was featured on their album Wheatfield Soul on the RCA record label. The single was written by Bachman/Cummings and was their first to reach the top ten.  The Guess Who followed with a succession of Top 40 hits including … “Laughing” (#10 U.S. Hit, #1Canada -written by Bachman/Cummings) and “Undun” (#22 U.S. Hit). 1970 would prove to be the most pivotal year for The Guess Who. The group scored (2) #1 Hits in the U.S. with “No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature" and “American Woman” the group's biggest selling single. The Guess Who also spawned the hits …. “No Time” (#5 U.S. #1 Canada -written by Bachman/Cummings), “Hand Me Down World” (#17 U.S. Hit) and “Share The Land” (#10 U.S. Hit -written by Burton Cummings).  Randy Bachman left The Guess Who in 1970 and would eventually form Bachman- Turner Overdrive. Subsequent albums released by The Guess Who … Canned Wheat (1969), American Woman (1970), Share The Land (1970), So Long, Bennatyne (1971), Rockin' (1972), Artificial Paradise (1973). In 1973, Burton Cummings and The Guess Who released one of the group's most underrated albums entitled The Guess Who #10. The album was a clear diversion from the band's roots but spotlighted brilliant lyrical content and virtuoso musicianship. The album featured Burton Cummings composition “Glamour Boy.” The track was a jab at David Bowie's glitter rock insurgence. The album also featured the profound “Cardboard Empire” written by Bill Wallace and Kurt Winter, while hauntingly performed by Cummings.  In 1974, The Guess Who collaborated on their final Top 40 single entitled “Clap For The Wolfman,” (#6 U.S. Billboard Hit) an applicable tribute to legendary radio and TV personality Wolfman Jack.  Subsequent releases: The Guess Who #10 (1973), Road Food (1974), Flavours (1974), Power in the Music (1975), The Way They Were (1976). The Guess Who disbanded in 1975. In 1983, Bachman, Cummings, Jim Kale and Garry Peterson reunited as The Guess Who to play a series of Canadian gigs and recorded the Together Again live album and video.  Bachman and Cummings reunited again in 1997 to perform in Winnipeg for a disaster relief fund raiser.  An eclectic Guess Who reunion ensued in 2000 featuring Bachman, Cummings, McDougall, Kale, and Peterson. Bill Wallace eventually replaced Kale while the group toured regularly through 2003. A live album and DVD followed at the end of the 2000 tour. The Guess Who was inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame in 2001. Cummings received an additional Star in 2011. The Guess Who performed for an estimated 450,000 people at Molson Canadian Rocks for Toronto, a benefit concert in 2003.  The Guess Who continues to tour with only original members … drummer Garry Peterson and bassist Jim Kale. Burton Cummings also amassed a widely successful solo career. He landed a huge hit with “Stand Tall” (#10 U.S. #1 Hit Canada) in 1976.  Burton Cummings solo albums …Burton Cummings (1976), My Own Way to Rock (1977), Dream of a Child (1978), Woman Love (1980), The Best of Burton Cummings (1980), Sweet Sweet (1981), Heart (1984), Plus Signs (1990), The Burton Cummings Collection (1994), Up Close and Alone (1996), Above the Ground (2008).   In 2002, The Burton Cummings Theatre for the Performing Arts in Winnipeg, Manitoba was renamed to dedicate the singer and songwriter.  In 2008, Cummings released the highly- acclaimed CD Above The Ground. All the tracks on the release are written by Cummings. The album also features his touring band The Carpet Frogs. In 2009, Cummings received the Order of Canada, one of the country's highest civilian honors.  In 2012, Burton Cummings Massey Hall was released –an incredible live CD recorded in Toronto.  Most recently … Burton Cummings is on a summer tour. He'll be releasing a book of poetry soon entitled, ‘The Writings of B. L. Cummings,' and a video series called RUFF.  I had the rare opportunity to chat with Burton Cummings recently about the summer tour, the true origin of “American Woman,” The life and times of The Guess Who, Canada, Wolfman Jack and so much more! Meet Heather - I am the daughter of an Air Force Pilot and an Airline Stewardess. I went to a Santana Concert in Charlotte and saw a Groupon for an introductory flight in a hanglider in Ashville, so I went for it! The ride was amazing! An ultra lite took us up 2000 feet. We unhooked and slowly spiraled down, an eagle flying with us! The ride lasted less than 15 minutes. I was hooked. I started shopping for hang gliders. I knew I wanted a longer hang time without being in a closed cockpit. So I kept searching for a mode of flying that would fit the bill. When I took my grandlove on her 10 year old trip to Washington DC, my brother was flying a backpack style powered parachute. Wow. This was close.....but....I weighed more back then and this girl was not running to get in the air unless someone was chasing me with a knife. I continued searching and happened to come across a video on youtube of a buckeye dream machine powered parachute. Then the serious shopping began. I found one nearby. Still at this point, I had never even flown in one. But, I brought money with me, he took me up in it, and I bought it right away. It was a two seater and had a 10 gallon fuel tank so he said it would only be legal if I got a Sport Pilot license and pointed me in the direction of Bill Wallace and Melinda Bliss. Three months later I was training with them. At this point it had been two and a half years from the hang gliding experience. Because I still work full time, and live 4 hours from the training, and winds were horrible the last year and a half. It took me a year and three months to complete my Sport Pilots Licensing . I have just purchased a second powered parachute, a phoenix that has been frankensteined with another machine. I love the chute in this one, a hybrid APCO. I love the seating, and I love the amount of structure so I can have more places to hang bags and my radio/com system. I look forward to semi retiring and hitting the road with my husband, a toy hauler, our kayaks, motorcycles and my powered parachute. Hoping to fly in every state! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jade-lear/message

A Scope of Loss Report is the insurance industry term for an estimate of the rebuilding cost of a lost house due to a severe event like fire, hurricane, or tornado. It does not reflect the cost of the house that will be rebuilt. It reflects rebuilding the specific house that was lost, exactly as it was, to the current building codes. The goal of which is so that the insurance industry knows what to payout based on the policy that was purchased. BW Builder was created in the aftermath of the Tubbs wildfire in 2017. Matt Everson and his partner Bill Wallace saw that insurance companies counted on the fact that disaster victims couldn't find a good way to report their losses and collect the insurance they deserved. Insurance companies also don't define how these losses must be reported, yet they rely on the disaster victim to report the loss themselves.   Regardless of being underinsured a policy holder is due the full amount of their policy, not 70 or 80% of the policy value, which is on average what is being paid out. So, BW Builders began creating accurate scope of loss reports for property owners who must demonstrate the value of their loss. These estimates are incredibly detailed, down to the number of nails used, and are not created in the typical way that a builder prices building a house, yet builders are in the unique position of having accurate knowledge of the cost of construction in their specific market.  Through technical innovations and a desire to help, not further harm, Matt and Bill provide estimates at a fraction of the cost of the typical private insurance adjuster. They are now getting the word out on how to do this work. They are actively recruiting other builders to use the systems they developed to help disaster victims recoup what they deserve from the insurance industry to rebuild their communities. “Don't take yourself too seriously, if you do it is about your ego.  If I get my ass kicked, I will brag about it, because then it means I am learning something.  We go into these things as insecure beings, I was no different.  But be willing to learn, my philosophy revolves around the concept of learning.  I have progressed a great deal, because every time I train with someone, I will come out better in some way.  I want to grow every time.” – Michael Jai WhiteReturning as my guest this episode is Michael Jai White, a highly trained martial artist, and actor.  Michael has broken barriers as a Hollywood star and is an International Box office sensation. He is a national martial arts champion, a special education teacher, and a Black Belt under the legendary Bill “Superfoot” Wallace.  He was awarded Black Belt Magazines, 2015 Man of the Year. This episode is all about approaching the study of martial arts with humility and honesty.  My key takeaway is that the Ego is the enemy and it stands in the way of progress and growth.  Humility relaxes the Ego and allows martial artists to face their insecurities and control issues.  By repeatedly putting yourself in uncomfortable positions and letting go of what other people think you will become comfortable expressing your authentic self and this will unlock your true hidden potential.  We also dive deep into the value of sparring, and how to get the most out of your sessions.  Michael shares great stories of his encounters with Floyd Mayweather, Donald Cerrone, and Michael Bisbing.  This was a fascinating conversation about martial arts, philosophy, and mindset, tune in for another great episode with Michael Jai White.

“Exist to Inspire, Martial arts is so much more than what people think.  If you live the way, and actually make martial arts part of your lifestyle it comes with these values and skillsets that no one can take away from you and can be used in all aspects of your life.” – Mr. Mikey Dillard“I want kids to have confidence and discipline, self-respect and respect for others, I want kids to stand out, a place where they fit in, have achievable goals, we exist to inspire, and we are here to grow martial arts.” – Mr. Michael DillardMy special guests this episode are Mr. Michael Dillard who is the CEO and Founder of Century Martial Arts and his son Mr. Mikey Dillard who is Century's CFO.  Century Martial Arts was founded in 1976 by Michael Dillard as one man working out of his garage, it has grown into a worldwide leader and innovator off martial arts equipment, instruction, and transformed the professional martial arts industry.  Century's success is due to the fact that it is owned and operated by Martial Artists, Michael Dillard is a multi-style black belt and is a 2 time National Karate Champion, his son Mikey Dillard is also a highly accomplished Tang Soo Do Black Belt, BJJ Brown Belt and has fought MMA. This episode is all about leadership and inspiration through the love of the martial arts lifestyle.  My key takeaway is that Martial Artists who are instructors in schools are catalysts to inspire change in people.  Martial arts instructors and school owners are the ones instilling the values of confidence, honor, and discipline inside their students, and make martial arts so much more than a physical activity like other sports.  We dive deep into the humble beginnings of Mr. Dillard's career, his training with Chuck Norris, Roger Green, Bill Wallace, to the development of Century Martial Arts and their plans for the future.  We also take a look at how martial arts training directly transfers to leadership in business.  The Dillard's truly live the martial arts lifestyle, they train in the morning, work, teach at lunch, work, and get back to training.  Tune in for a wonderful episode, the father and son stories are entertaining and inspiring, but above all the love, commitment and dedication to the martial arts values and the power they have to change lives is what makes this family and company thrive.

“Respect Needs to Go Around for Every Martial Art.  We can learn Something from everyone.”    -Michael Jai White  My guest this episode is Michael Jai White, a highly trained martial artist & actor. This episode is filled with golden nuggets.  My key take away is all about the philosophy of looking to get better every time you train. Michael's “growth minded” approach allows him to keep an empty cup as he seeks out the best martial artists on the planet to test himself against and to be exposed to their methods.  Because Martial Arts is not about fighting, it's not about dominating your opponent, but about overcoming yourself. This Episode is brought to you by Black Belt.  Black Belt is the world's leading self-defense magazine and is dedicated to both the classical and the modern eclectic martial arts....
