This week we welcome Chris Laszcz-Davis - OHTA, Chelsea Earhart – BGC, Larry Sloan – AIHA and Dr. Albert Tien -WHWB-US to talk about global worker health and the new Global Pathway for CIH Accreditation. This week we focus on organizations involved in global worker safety and their new collaboration for educating and mentoring global EH&S professionals. We discuss how someone with no specific education, such as a degree in engineering, can become a CIH through the program. It starts with the training from OHTA; work experience with WHWB-US in places that are in need of help with health and safety; proceeds to membership in AIHA, along with participation in committees, etc.; and concludes with an application and a test to obtain a CIH accreditation. Chris Laszcz-Davis, MS, CIH, FAIHA, FAIC is the Founder & President of The Environmental Quality Organization (EQO) LLC, She has over forty (40) years of executive management including as a former Corporate Vice-President, Environmental Affairs for Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corporation. I found what is likely a one-of-a-disc private pressing by Frank Collett using the Moog Modular Synthesizer. This 45 RPM disc was recorded at Finetone Recording Studio in New York City and is inscribed with the hand-written message, “To John & Loretta: Merry XMAS. Composed and arranged by Frank Collett” This appears to be disc made of metal with a vinyl coating. One side includes his rendition of Bach's “Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring” plus a short tune called “Little Joey” (see below). The flip side contains the same recording of “Little Joey.” Dated December 22, 1970. Clearly made using a Moog Modular Synthesizer. Collett (1941-2016) was a noted session pianist and sometimes led and recorded with his own trio. He was raised in New York. In 1968 he was accompanist to Sarah Vaughan. The following year he moved to Las Vegas, Nevada.  He became the house pianist, with the orchestra in the main showroom of the International Hotel (which became the Las Vegas Hilton).  It was during this period that he made this recording in NY.  01:57 49:44 17.   Frank Collett, “Little Joey” (1970 Privately Made Release). Frank Collett using the Moog Modular Synthesizer. From a 45 RPM disc recorded at Finetone Recording Studio in New York City (see above). Dated December 22, 1970. Clearly made using a Moog Modular Synthesizer. Collett (1941-2016) was a noted session pianist and sometimes led and recorded with his own trio. Moog Modular Synthesiser, Frank Collett. Whose Moog Synthesizer did he use to make this recording? I can only speculate and guess that he made the recording at the studio of Gerson Kingsley in New York. 01:56 51:40 18.   Romantic Synthesizer, “Oh Tannenbaum” from Christmas Memories (1983 Dureco Benelux). French-Dutch album. Arranged, produced, synthesizers by Gerto Heupink, Robert Pot. 02:53 53:34 19.   Keiko Ohta (Ota), “Here Comes Santa Claus” from Electone X'Mas Present (1975 Canyon). Yamaha Electone GX-707 (GX-1), arranged by Keiko Ohta. Japan. Yes, the song originally made famous by Elvis Presley. Ohta was a female Electone star from Japan. The GX-1 was an early polyphonic synthesizer and a new branch of the Yamaha Electone family tree. 04:11 59:06 21.   Paul Haig, “Scottish Christmas” from Chantons Noël - Ghosts Of Christmas Past (1981 Les Disques Du Crépuscule). Scottish songwriter, musician and singer. 02:46 01:03:16 22.   Les Cousins Dangereux, “What Child Is This” from Gotta Groove Records 2012 (2012 Gotta Groove Records). Holiday album with various artists. Les Cousins Dangereux is Mr. Tim Thornton. 01:59 01:06:00 23.   Joy Electric, “Angels We Have Heard on High” from The Magic Of Christmas (2003 Tooth & Nail Records). Joy Electric is Ronnie Martin from Ohio. American synthesizer-pop musician. Among his many releases is this crafty Christmas album. 01:48 01:07:58 24.   Koichi Oki, “Jingle Bells” from The Man From Yukiguni (1975 TIM/RS). Japan. Koichi Oki's Christmas album performed solely by his Yamaha Electone E-3. “Yukiguni” means snowland. Oki was a hugely popular Electone artist in Japan. 01:50 01:09:46 25.   Koichi Oki, “Winter Wonderland” from The Man From Yukiguni (1975 TIM/RS). Japan. Koichi Oki's Christmas album performed solely by his Yamaha Electone E-3. “Yukiguni” means snowland. Oki was a hugely popular Electone artist in Japan. 02:18 01:11:34 26.   Edhels, “Oriental Christmas” from Oriental Christmas (1985 Cabana Music). Recorded in France. Drums, Percussion, Keyboards, Jacky Rosati; Guitar, Jean Louis Suzzoni; Guitar, Bass, Keyboards, Composed by, Marc Ceccotti; Keyboards, Noël Damon. I was sent this as a promotional album back in 1985 with a kind little note from the artists. Sorry it took me so long to put the Christmas-related track in my podcast. This is great example of synth-pop from France in the 1980s. 04:22 01:13:52 27.   Bob Wehrman, John Bezjian and Dusty Wakeman, “Joy to the World” from Christmas Becomes Electric (1984 Tropical Records). Produced in L.A., a collection of pre-fab synthesizer classics. Not the same record of the same title as Douglas Leedy. 02:40 01:18:12 28.   Bob Wehrman, John Bezjian and Dusty Wakeman, “Ring Christmas Bells” from Christmas Becomes Electric (1984 Tropical Records). Produced in L.A., a collection of pre-fab synthesizer classics. Not the same record of the same title as Douglas Leedy. 01:46 01:20:50 29.   Romantic Synthesizer, “So This is Christmas” from Christmas Memories (1983 Dureco Benelux). French-Dutch album. Arranged, produced, synthesizers by Gerto Heupink, Robert Pot. We don't often hear an instrumental rendition of this Lennon and Ono X-mas tune. 03:22 01:22:34 30.   Swinging Buildings, “Praying For A Cheaper Christmas” from Chantons Noël - Ghosts Of Christmas Past (1981 Les Disques Du Crépuscule). From a compilation album of Christmas-related tunes. This group was once rumored to be New Order in disguise. But no, they were in fact The Bowling Balls in disguise. 03:07 01:25:54 31.   Bernie Krause, Philip Aaberg, “Feliz Navidad” from A Wild Christmas (1994 Etherean Music ). This delightful cassette is from Bernie Krause, known for his Moog explorations with Paul Beaver back in the day. All animal and ambient sounds recorded on location worldwide by Bernie Krause with the exception of the fish (courtesy of U.S. Navy). Animal samples, Bernie Krause and Phil Aaberg. Arrangements, new materials, all keyboards (Kurzweil 2000/Emulator III) Phil Aaberg. Percussion on Feliz Navidad performed by Ben Leinbach. 5:37 05:37 01:28:58 32.   The Original Cast: R2-D2, Anthony Daniels As C-3PO, “R2D2 We Wish You A Merry Christmas” from Christmas In The Stars: Star Wars Christmas Album (1980 RSO). Vocals, Arthur Boller, Donald Oriolo, Jr., Dori Greenberg, Ivy Alexenburg, Jake Yeston, Jessica Taylor, Marney Alexenburg, Ricky Haayen, Roddy McBrien, Russell Poses, Scot Randell, Stacy Greenberg; Keyboards, Derek Smith, Harold Wheeler, Pat Rebillot; Sound Effects (R2D2), Ben Burtt. The whole Star Wars crew seems to have a part in this holiday album. I wanted to highlight a track featuring the melodious electronic beeping of R2D2. 03:33 01:34:34 Opening background music: Sounds Of Broadcasting 1, “Christmas Logos” from Sounds Of Broadcasting #6088 (1975? William B. Tanner Company, Inc.). Broadcast library track produced for the holidays. Produced using a Moog Modular Synthesizer. Notice how the melody imitates a familiar tune without ever hitting the same notes. A copyright thing. Another name of this track might as well be, “It's Beginning to Sound A Lot Like Christmas.” Jean Jacques Perrey and Sy Mann, “Tijuana Christmas” from Switched on Santa (1970 Pickwick). USA. Moog Modular Synthesizer. Don Voegeli, “Chanukah” from Holiday & Seasonal Music (1977 EMI). USA. Produced at the Electrosonic Studio of the University of Wisconsin-Extension.   Opening and closing sequences voiced by Anne Benkovitz. Visual design by Anne Benkovitz. Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. See my companion blog that I write for the Bob Moog Foundation. For additional notes, please see my blog, Noise and Notations. In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we talked with Mitinori Saitou from Kyoto University about his work on germ cell development, focusing on proteins like BLIMP1 and PRDM14, reprogramming iPSCs, and his vision to address infertility and genetic disorders through epigenetic insights. To start our discussion, Dr. Saitou shares the foundation of his research, which centers on the mechanisms of germ cell development across various species, including mice, non-human primates, and humans. He provides insight into his early work examining the roles of two key proteins: BLIMP1 and PRDM14. These proteins are essential for germline specification in mammals, and their functions are unveiled through detailed exploration of knockout models. In particular, Dr. Saitou elucidates the critical events in germ cell specification, highlighting how disruptions to the functions of these proteins lead to significant impairments in development. As the conversation deepens, we discuss Dr. Saitou's groundbreaking advances in human-induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). He elaborates on the processes involved in reprogramming these cells to form primordial germ cell-like cells, emphasizing the significance of understanding various cellular contexts and transcriptional regulation. Dr. Saitou then details how overexpression of certain factors in embryonic stem cells can induce these germline characteristics, presenting the promise of innovation in regenerative medicine and reproductive biology. We end our talk with the exploration of chromatin remodeling that occurs during germ cell development, including fascinating details about DNA and histone modification dynamics. Dr. Saitou articulates how the epigenetic landscape shifts during the transition from pluripotent states to germ cell specification, providing a detailed comparison between mouse and human systems. This highlights the complexity of gene regulation and the importance of specific epigenetic markers in establishing and maintaining cellular identity.   References Yamaji, M., Seki, Y., Kurimoto, K. et al. Hi mamas. Today on the podcast, I'm joined by Rachael Shepard-Ohta, who is a certified sleep consultant, a parent educator, content creator, podcaster, mother of three and founder of Hey Sleep Baby. I had the pleasure of being on Rachael's podcast, No One Told Us, last year and I was so happy to have the opportunity to have another wonderful conversation with her here.  In this episode, we discuss Rachael's expectations prior to becoming a mother and how her lived experience compared to this, and in particular, the relinquishing of control that comes with parenthood and how this can bring out a part of ourselves that we may not have had much contact with prior to becoming a parent.  We also talk about Rachael's journey to starting Hey Sleepy Baby, following her own negative experience with sleep training her first child as a response to outside pressure surrounding her baby's sleep, and the passion this ignited in her to challenge the status quo of baby sleep advice.  We also discuss: -       The versions of ourselves from before we had children, the transition parenthood brings and how, when we feel resistance or struggles in our mothering, it is often due to these parts of our former selves that are still there and are needing to be seen.  -       The challenge of balancing the requirements of career and work alongside motherhood, and in particular both mine and Rachael's experience of running our own businesses and the challenges this can present in terms of compartmentalising and being present with our children  -       Rachael's experience of postnatal anxiety following the birth of her first child, which was contributed to by the stress and external pressures surrounding her baby's sleep. We reflect on the preoccupation with baby sleep in these early phases and how this stems from the lack of support within our culture.  -       The power of trusting yourself, trusting your mothering, and knowing that nothing that you're dealing with is forever.   And much more. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did.   Here is where you can find out more about me (Yara), how to work with me and some resources: Why Am I So Angry Workshop *** Waitlist for The Rebirth, Group Coaching for Mamas ***This is my signature 3 months online group coaching container for mothers which covers family of origin, inner child work, nervous system basics, anger, boundaries and much more.  @lifeafterbirthpsychology   www.lifeafterbirth.com.au Free Inner Critic Workbook Free Values Aligned Living Workbook Find out more about Rachael: @heysleepybaby @noonetoldusthepodcast Listen to my episode on No One Told Us www.heysleepybaby.com

H., Tamura, M., Kofuji, S., Akikusa, Y., Ohta, K., Shiozaki, K. Abstract: Cells cease to proliferate above their growth-permissible temperatures, a ubiquitous phenomenon generally attributed to protein denaturing and heat damage to other cellular macromolecules. We here report that, in the presence of the macrolide compound rapamycin, the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe can proliferate at high temperatures that normally arrest its growth. Rapamycin is a potent inhibitor of the protein kinase complex TOR Complex 1 (TORC1), and consistently, mutations to the TORC1 subunit RAPTOR/Mip1 and the TORC1 substrate Sck1 significantly improve cellular heat resistance. These results suggest that TORC1, a well-established growth promoter, restricts the high-temperature growth of fission yeast and that compromised TORC1 signaling allows cell proliferation at higher temperatures. Aiming for a more comprehensive understanding of the negative regulation of high-temperature growth, we conducted genome-wide screens in S. pombe, which identified Sck1 and additional factors that appear to suppress cell proliferation at high temperatures. Our study has uncovered unexpected mechanisms of growth restraint even below the temperatures deleterious to cell physiology. Thus, growth arrest at high temperatures may not directly result from heat damage to cellular components essential for proliferation and viability. Copy rights belong to original authors. C., Imamizu, H., Kato, N., Okamoto, Y., Takahashi, H., Kawato, M., Yamashita, O., Hashimoto, R.-i. Abstract: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a lifelong condition, and its underlying biological mechanisms remain elusive. The complexity of various factors, including inter-site and development-related differences, makes it challenging to develop generalizable neuroimaging-based biomarkers for ASD. This study used a large-scale, multi-site dataset of 730 Japanese adults to develop a generalizable neuromarker for ASD across independent sites (U.S., Belgium, and Japan) and different developmental stages (children and adolescents). Our adult ASD neuromarker achieved successful generalization for the US and Belgium adults (area under the curve [AUC] = 0.70) and Japanese adults (AUC = 0.81). The neuromarker demonstrated significant generalization for children (AUC = 0.66) and adolescents (AUC = 0.71; all P less than 0.05, family-wise-error corrected). We identified 141 functional connections (FCs) important for discriminating individuals with ASD from TDCs. These FCs largely centered on social brain regions such as the amygdala, hippocampus, dorsomedial and ventromedial prefrontal cortices, and temporal cortices. Finally, we mapped schizophrenia (SCZ) and major depressive disorder (MDD) onto the biological axis defined by the neuromarker and explored the biological continuity of ASD with SCZ and MDD. We observed that SCZ, but not MDD, was located proximate to ASD on the biological dimension defined by the ASD neuromarker. The successful generalization in multifarious datasets and the observed relations of ASD with SCZ on the biological dimensions provide new insights for a deeper understanding of ASD. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.12.19.520902v1?rss=1 Authors: Gallagher, D. C., Matsumoto, K., Ohta, S. Abstract: A wealth of correlational evidence suggests that Broca's area (the left inferior frontal gyrus) plays a role in second language acquisition. With the use of highly focal non-invasive brain stimulation, evidence for a targeted brain region's causal role in some cognitive behavior can be assessed. Over three sessions, each one week apart, we used online anodal high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) over Broca's area during a novel foreign grammar training session. During training, participants who were naive to Spanish were tasked with acquiring present tense conjugation rules for the three Spanish verb endings. In Session 1, we observed significant improvement in performance in two linguistic (reception and production) tasks but not in a non-linguistic (working memory) task. Sessions 2 and 3 were subject to a ceiling effect, which obscured any potentially long-lasting effects of the stimulation. We interpret these results as support for the idea that Broca's area has languagelike specificity that is not limited to receptive or productive processes and as evidence that Broca's area plays a causal role in foreign grammar acquisition. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.12.17.520859v1?rss=1 Authors: Gallagher, D. C., Yano, M., Ohta, S. Abstract: Experimental psychology has long discussed the modality effect, whereby the stimulus modality significantly affects retention of the information presented. In neurolinguistics, however, the effect of stimulus modality on language processing has gained little attention. We conducted a multi-modal event-related potential (ERP) experiment on both native and non-native Spanish speakers to investigate the possibility of a neurophysiological modality effect in language processing. Using morphosyntactically violated and orthographically/phonologically violated stimuli, we elicited a robust N400 and P600 in native speakers. We showed that the N400 has consistent features across modalities, while the P600 has modality-specific features. Specifically, the auditory evoked P600 was characterized by a more gradual slope and a later peak than the visual evoked P600. We discuss this in detail along with other modality effects observed post sensory perception. Among second language (L2) learner groups, those with higher proficiency exhibited more nativelike neurophysiological responses in both modalities when compared to those with lower proficiency. We additionally observed fewer modality-specific differences in low proficiency learners than in higher proficiency learners suggesting that modality-specific specialization in language processing comes with increased proficiency. We further discuss the question of modality-specific differences in the process of neurophysiological nativization, whereby L2 learners' ERPs become increasingly on nativelike. In this episode of Digital Transformation & Leadership Danny Levy talks to Kazuki “Kaz” Ohta the CEO at Treasure Data, a leading customer data platform. Kaz moved to America without even knowing how to speak English, where he overcame this obstacle and majored in computer science. During that time, his professor built the world's faster supercomputer (essentially 500K computers combined into one), and Kaz was part of the team that built the file system. A long-time open source advocate, Kaz has made numerous contributions to open source software and was instrumental in developing the open-source applications Fluentd, Embulk, and Messagepack. In his free time, Kaz enjoys building up his sake collection (importing cases from Japan every month), and during the pandemic, he learned how to properly cut sashimi-style sushi (Maguro O Toro is my favorite). In addition, Kaz is also really deep into gaming, specifically Fortnite! In this episode Kaz shares why enterprise business leaders believe in CX, but can't deliver it, how to create connected customer experiences and why it's a key part of navigating today's challenging economic climate, and where CEOs need to be focusing their leadership energy and skills right now. When parents bring home their new baby, everything about their life changes — their priorities, schedules, and sleep. After many sleepless nights, parents can become fixated on how to help their new little one sleep longer stretches. We get it. We've been there. It can be exhausting. But most parents think the only way to get through it is to sleep train their baby. We thought so, too, that is until we met Rachael Shepard-Ohta. We like to call her "the no-sleep-training sleep consultant." She's all about evidence-based, intuitive, and respectful baby sleep and helps parents listen to their intuition, learn more about their specific babies, and helps them discover what's best for them. Rachael has a Bachelor's and Masters in Elementary and Special Education. When her son was born, she became obsessed with baby sleep, and through her own baby sleep journey, she discovered her new passion. Rachael then decided to pivot her entire career to helping other mothers thrive! She does exactly that with her business and social media, gently leading parents and their babies to better sleep. If you haven't seen Rachael on Instagram @heysleepybaby yet, you'll see a refreshingly new side to baby's sleep and attachment that hasn't been discussed much before. And on today's episode, you'll learn more about sleep science, how to understand your baby (from their temperament and sensory profile to the way they form attachments), and more. Topics We Discussed: How she came to use this attachment-first method and why she thinks it is beneficial Her opinion on traditional sleep training Her tips for moms in the "sleep obsession" phase and how they can be more confident How infant brain development and attachment play a part in how our babies learn to sleep

In this episode, Cody & Molly keep it California-centric and discuss the murders of 5 individuals, including 2 children at a beautiful home in the beach town of Soquel. The victims, Dr. Victor Ohta, Virgina Ohta, their 2 sons and Dr. Ohta's Personal Assistant, Dorothy Cadwallader were found when firefighters were alerted to the crime scene after the home had been set on fire. These murders and the hunt for the person or people responsible created an even larger divide in the community and fueled the anti-hippie sentiment that was already prevalent at this time. Given a threatening note found at the crime scene, did we have another Manson family on our hands? Law enforcement was working against the clock to make sure that those responsible were apprehended as quickly as possible and that the community was kept safe.

Uketropolis: Ukulele Q&A with James Hill

Welcome to Uketropolis, a podcast with real ukulele answers to real ukulele questions. I'm your host, James Hill. I'm a lifelong ukulele player, teacher and believer in the power of ukulele to make positive change in the world. I've written and co-written several ukulele methods including Booster Uke, The Ukulele Way and Ukulele in the Classroom. I'm also the co-founder of the JHUI Teacher Certification Program and in 2019 I brought all of these education projects into one place and called it Uketropolis.com. Thousands of students worldwide have formed a warm, supportive learning community around these resources and what I do every week in this podcast is I choose a few real student questions from Uketropolis.com and offer my suggestions and thoughts on those questions.I want to take a moment to acknowledge that I'm a third-generation Canadian ukulele player and that many players and teachers have paved the way for the work I've done as a teacher, player and author. First, thank you to the Godfather of Canadian ukulele, my friend and mentor, J. Chalmers Doane, my childhood teachers Jamie Thomas and Peter Luongo and many others along the way who kept the ukulele flame alive long before the third wave. Thank you Bonnie Smith, Bill Wallace, Warren Dobson, Cam Trowsdale, Lorna MacPhee, Marven Shields, Jody Wood, Vince and Charlene Sequeira, Tina Horwood and so many other devoted ukulele educators. A special thank you to my teachers and friends in Hawaii who inspired me and, long ago, embraced this young Canadian ukulele player and welcomed "Kimo Pu'u" into their musical 'ohana: Ohta-san, Herb Ohta Jr., Kimo Hussey, Byron Yasui, Benny Chong, Ledward Kaapana, Dennis Kamakahi, Roy and Kathy Sakuma. Everything I know about ukulele has been shaped by what you've shown me and I'm very grateful to pass on some of that knowledge and aloha in this podcast.Thank you for listening and I'll see you in Episode 1!

J., Hamada, Y., Hirabayashi, T., Minamimoto, T., Sadato, N., Okano, H., Oishi, K. Abstract: A comparison of neuroanatomical features of the brain between humans and our evolutionary relatives, nonhuman primates, is key to understanding the human brain system and the neural basis of mental and neurological disorders. Although most comparative MRI studies of human and nonhuman primate brains have been based on brains of primates that had been used as subjects in experiments, it is essential to investigate various species of nonhuman primates in order to elucidate and interpret the diversity of neuroanatomy features among humans and nonhuman primates. To develop a research platform for this purpose, it is necessary to harmonize the scientific contributions of studies with the standards of animal ethics, animal welfare, and the conservation of brain information for long-term continuation of the field. In previous research, we first developed an open-resource repository of anatomical images obtained using 9.4-T ex vivo MRI of postmortem brain samples from 12 nonhuman primate species, and which are stored at the Japan Monkey Centre. In the present study, as a second phase, we released a collection of T2-weighted images and diffusion tensor images obtained in nine species: white-throated capuchin, Bolivian squirrel monkey, stump-tailed macaque, Tibet monkey, Sykes' monkey, Assamese macaque, pig-tailed macaque, crested macaque, and chimpanzee. Our image repository should facilitate scientific discoveries in the field of comparative neuroscience. This repository can also promote animal ethics and animal welfare in experiments with nonhuman primate models by optimizing methods for in vivo and ex vivo MRI scanning of brains and supporting veterinary neuroradiological education. In addition, the repository is expected to contribute to conservation, preserving information about the brains of various primates, including endangered species, in a permanent digital form. California in the late sixties may have been known for its summer of love, hippie communes, and the age of acquarius but by 1970 the picturesque coastal region of Santa Cruz was embroiled in an era punctuated by fear, paranoia, and violence. With two serial killers and a mass murderer operating in such close proximity to each other, it's no wonder that the once peaceful coastal community soon became known as the Murder Capital of the World.  Into the Redwoods is a three part series that investigates the individuals who earned Santa Cruz its macabre reputation: John Linley Frazier, Herbert Mullin, and Edmund Kemper, and explores the social, political, and psychological factors that may have influenced their journeys.  In episode one we remember The Ohta family, Dorothy Cadwallader, and the friends and family impacted by these horrific losses. Instead of the regular What's Weird this Week segment, these episodes will encourage listeners to engage in local mental health agencies and to reduce the stigma surrounding psychiatric concerns.
