Russia is actively seeking to influence religious and traditional views to further its own agenda, pushing a narrative that Moscow stands for traditional values against a decadent West in an effort to foster division within Western societies. This is a particularly pernicious front of Russia's malign influence campaigns, and combating it presents a uniquely difficult challenge for the United States and its European allies. Dr. Elizabeth Prodromou, one of the contributors to The Kremlin Playbook 3: Keeping the Faith, which takes a deep look at these issues, joins our host Thanos Davelis to talk about the Playbook and this element of Russian malign influence. We also look at how this is playing out in Greece, which is uniquely significant in Russia's strategy of weaponizing “traditionalism”. Dr. Elizabeth Prodromou is an internationally recognized leader on issues of religion and human rights, and a previous Vice Chair and Commissioner on the US Commission on International Religious Freedom. Dr. Prodromou is also a faculty member at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, where she directs the Initiative on Religion, Law, and Diplomacy. It builds on the first Kremlin Playbook, which described the patterns of Russian economic influence in five Central and Eastern European countries. This new report, with six new case studies, exposes how countries can either be targets or enablers of Russian malign economic influence by allowing their financial systems to shelter profits for Russian companies and facilitate tax avoidance or illicit financial activity in Europe. The Kremlin Playbook 2 highlights the nexus between illicit finance and national security, describes the adaption of Russian tactics, and underscores the democratic imperative of greater institutional transparency against complex illicit schemes.

There's a frenzy in Washington surrounding the 2016 election and Russia's interference in it. Plenty of the buzz is partisan in its tenor, and there is plenty of it to go around on both sides of the aisle. This episode of The Kremlin Playbook rises above partisan politics and focuses on what options the US has to counter Russia's interference in our election.
Russia's interference in our election didn't happen in a vacuum. The Russians have been waging influence campaigns across Europe for decades. That's why Heather Conley of CSIS studied Russia's operations in Central and Eastern Europe. Her findings are contained in a report that has become a must read in Washington—it's called The Kremlin Playbook. And you can read it by visiting www.csis.org. The Playbook examines Russia's efforts to gain economic and political influence in Bulgaria, Hungary, Latvia, Serbia and Slovakia. Its findings show a broad pattern of Russian behavior that can help us understand Russia's interference in the 2016 US election. This episode, part 2 in our mini-series, discussed how Russia influences elections.
