Earlier this week, journalists at WIRED and The Washington Post reported that a “Russian-aligned propaganda network notorious for creating deepfake whistleblower videos” appears to be behind a coordinated effort to promote false sexual misconduct allegations against vice presidential candidate Tim Walz. At WIRED, David Gilbert wrote that researchers have linked a group they're calling “Storm-1516” to the campaign against Walz. “Storm-1516 has a long history of posting fake whistleblower videos, and often deepfake videos, to push Kremlin talking points to the West,” Gilbert explained. A few days earlier, NBC News also reported on Storm-1516, citing its work as demonstrative of Russian propaganda's growing utilization of artificial intelligence and more sophisticated bot networks. Two days after the WIRED report, Washington Post journalist and Russia expert Catherine Belton reported on another bad actor implicated in spreading the allegations against Walz: John Mark Dougan, a former Florida cop with a long and winding record that includes internal affairs investigations, early discharge from the Marines, and a penchant for posting confidential data about thousands of police officers, federal agents, and judges on his blog, which led to 21 state charges of extortion and wiretapping. To escape that indictment, Dougan fled to Moscow, where he soon put his conspiratorial blogging skills to work, effectively enlisting in the Russian intelligence community's “Internet war” against America. Records show and disinformation researchers argue that Dougan is responsible for content on dozens of fake news sites with deliberately misleading names like DC Weekly, Chicago Chronicle, and Atlanta Observer. Lately, he's reportedly started using a GRU-facilitated server and AI generator to create phony videos like the deepfake video showing one of Walz's former students accusing him of sexual abuse. With a little more than a week until the U.S. presidential election, Meduza spoke to Renée DiResta — the author of Invisible Rulers: The People Who Turn Lies Into Reality and an associate research professor at Georgetown University's McCourt School of Public Policy — about Russian propaganda, how it's evolved over the years, and how American social networks are responding (and not responding) ahead of the November 2024 vote. Russia is using agents of influence, propaganda, vote buying, and the Orthodox Church to retain influence in Moldova. With a presidential election looming, the people of Moldova must decide whether they want to continue the EU-integration course led by President Maia Sandu, or whether to spurn it and pursue a different path, all while Russia tries to seek and invent new ways to remove agency from what it considers “a potential part of Russia.” You can read Maksim Samorukov's recent paper on Moldova here: https://carnegieendowment.org/research/2024/10/moldova-russia-strategy?lang=en¢er=russia-eurasia Host – Alexander GabuevGuests – Paula Erizanu and Maksim SamorukovProduced by Dmitrii KuznetsovMusic by Liam Gordon
There was a lot of movement late last week in Donald Trump's ongoing criminal cases in DC and New York, but with very different results. Veteran prosecutors Andrew Weissmann and Mary McCord review last Thursday's status hearing in Trump's DC election interference case and break down the new deadlines set in Judge Chutkan's scheduling order. Then, they dig into the nuance of Judge Merchan's decision to push back the date of Trump's sentencing, as well as delaying his ruling on how immunity applies to the case until after the November election. And before winding up today's episode, Mary and Andrew give their uniquely informed take on the DOJ's actions regarding Russian efforts to interfere and influence the 2024 election.Want to listen to this show without ads? In France, pan-African influencers are gaining more and more followers on social media. Advocating a radical anti-Western ideology, some of them claim responsibility for the recent coups in Mali and Burkina Faso. Their narrative is similar to that of the Kremlin, which is trying to place its pawns on the African continent. FRANCE 24 profiles two French influencers who seem to have taken sides with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Dr. Ivana Stradner, who grew up in Serbia, discusses the rise of Serbian nationalism, Putin's strategy of increasing ethnic tensions in the region, and why we may be close to a new war in the Balkans.
Polish President Andrzej Duda announced in late May 2023 that he would sign a bill to create a panel to investigate allegations that the Civic Platform political party (PO) allowed Russia to influence Poland during its time in power from 2007 to 2015. The panel will have the authority to ban people found guilty of acting under Russian influence from holding security clearance or overseeing public funds, effectively disqualifying them from holding public office for 10 years. In this episode, Salomon Montaguth is joined by Sophia Ritscher, Intelligence Analyst at The Counterterrorism Group, to discuss the real impact of Russian influence on politics in Poland.
In this episode we are talking about Russian presence in Africa. Is it possible to buy votes in the UN? Why Russia displaced France in many African countries? Military help: a true salvation or a way to gain control? Political side will try to give you possible answers to these questions.
Russian forces occupy some 20 percent of Georgia's territory, a consequence of two wars. Officially, Georgia wants to join NATO and the EU; these ambitions are even written into its constitution. But behind the scenes, the country's de facto ruler – oligarch Bidzina Ivanizhvili – is suspected of sabotaging the reforms demanded by Brussels. This has put the ruling party at odds with the population, since the vast majority of Georgians are in favour of joining the EU. FRANCE 24's Elena Volochine reports from Tbilisi.
Russian Influence on India. Recently I came across a research paper by a Russian researcher on the history of the world that it was Russia which gave the Vedas, The Vimanas, Philosophy And the sciences to the world and not India. I was not surprised. Because, The Vedas were composed in the Arctic, Shiva with his son Ganesha left India through the western part of India, traveled through the western world before arriving at the Arctic to compose the Rig Veda . He returned to India with His son through Russia, Rig Vedic Swasthik Mandala City is found in Arkaim, Russia, Siberians worship Ayur Devatas,(many Hindus are not aware of these Devathas!) Krishna's son Pradhyumna founded the city of Port Baijn, Russia was called Sthree varsha, Land of women ,ruled by women, Lake Baikal is Vaikanasa Theertha, Indra's city Amravathi was in Russia, Russian Veda is Santi Veda Caspian sea is the Kashyap Sagar…… and there is another puzzle, India is referred in Sankalpa, which is recited before any religious function,as Bhata Kande. Bhatara kande means The continent of Bharatha,an ancient Emperor of India and the land mass of which it forms a part is referred to as Bharatha Varsha. The point is it is already stated as Bharatha Varshe as a land mass . then why the the term Bharatha kande, Bharata's Continent to indicate India? Hindu system of tagging is from the Bigger to to smaller. If Bharatha Kanda is India,Greater India , what is Bharat Varsha? It should be a bigger landmass. Evidence of super continents like Pangea, Archea, Rodinia are proved by Geology . The land mass was quite huge. So the reference to Bharatavarsha is to a larger landmass than Bhartaha Kanda, the land of Bharatha, currently referred to as India. Another pointer in this direction is that, it is tradition to say Bharatavarsha, irrespective of here one lives, even if he were to be in the US, Australia or Europe. The answer to the puzzle lies in the description of Bhu Mandala, The Earth. I recently came across a research paper by a Russian researcher stating that Russia, not India, was responsible for giving the world the Vedas, Vimanas, philosophy, and sciences. This claim did not surprise me because of various pieces of evidence that suggest a strong connection between ancient Russia and India. For instance, it is believed that the Vedas were composed in the Arctic, and Shiva and Ganesha left India through the western part of India, traveled to the Arctic to compose the Rig Veda, and returned to India through Russia. The Rig Vedic Swasthik Mandala City can be found in Arkaim, Russia, and Siberians worship Ayur Devatas, which many Hindus may not be aware of. Krishna's son Pradhyumna founded the city of Port Baijn in Russia, which was called Sthree Varsha or the land of women ruled by women. Lake Baikal is also considered Vaikanasa Theertha, and Indra's city Amravathi was in Russia. Moreover, the Russian Veda is known as Santi Veda, and the Caspian Sea is referred to as the Kashyap Sagar. Interestingly, India is referred to as Bharatha Kande in the Sankalpa recited before any religious function. Bhata Kande means the continent of Bharatha, an ancient Indian emperor, and the land mass of which it forms a part is referred to as Bharatha Varsha. However, the term Bharatha Kande refers to Bharata's continent to indicate India, suggesting a larger landmass beyond India. The Hindu system of tagging refers from the bigger to the smaller, indicating that Bharatha Kanda is Greater India. Therefore, Bharatavarsha, which is mentioned irrespective of where one lives, even in the US, Australia, or Europe, should refer to a larger landmass than Bharatha Kanda. This larger landmass is believed to be described in the concept of Bhu Mandala, the Earth. Geology has proven the existence of supercontinents like Pangea, Archea, and Rodinia, suggesting that the landmass in ancient times was quite huge. In early February 2022, as Russia massed more than 100,000 troops on the border with Ukraine, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán traveled to Moscow on what he described as a “peace mission.” Standing alongside Vladimir Putin at a press conference, Orbán urged other Western countries to adopt a “Hungarian model” of relations with Russia — one supposedly based on “mutual respect.” Just a few weeks later, the Kremlin launched a full-scale invasion of Hungary's neighbor, Ukraine. For Orbán and his government, the invasion came as a shock. And for a brief moment, it seemed as though Budapest would finally reverse its longstanding pro-Kremlin stance. But instead, Hungarian officials have opted to walk the line, supporting round after round of EU sanctions against Russia and welcoming more than 2.1 million Ukrainian refugees, while also blocking the passage of weapons through Hungarian territory to Ukraine, brandishing their EU veto power, and refusing to forsake Russian energy imports. To find out more about Russian influence in Hungary and its impact on the Orbán government's response to the war in Ukraine, The Naked Pravda sat down with three expert guests. (14:14) Zsuzsanna Vegh, a visiting fellow at the German Marshall Fund of the United States and a lecturer and researcher at European University Viadrina, on how the Orbán government's business-as-usual Russia policy puts Hungary at odds with its European partners.

Being labeled a Russian propagandist all day every day for criticizing US foreign policy is really weird, but one advantage it comes with is a useful perspective on what people have really been talking about all these years when they warn of the dangers of "Russian propaganda". Reading by Tim Foley.
Since 2018, mercenaries from Russia's Wagner Group, an effective secret army of the Kremlin, have been active in Central African Republic. They protect the impoverished country's regime in exchange for valuable mineral resources and deploy a massive propaganda campaign to cover up the massacres, rapes and torture they are accused of. Taking advantage of France's loss of influence in its former colony, Russia is seen to be using Central African Republic – a country ripped apart by decades of civil war – as a testing ground in a new battle for global influence. FRANCE 24's Carol Valade and Clément Di Roma report.

Host Carol Castiel speaks with Benjamin Gedan, deputy director of the Latin American Program at the Woodrow Wilson Center and Eric Farnsworth, vice president of the Council of the Americas and the Americas Society about the impact of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the politics of lifting of two controversial US border policies which affect migration at the southern US border.

IDA Ideas host Rhett Moeller spoke to Miriam M. Roday and Sarah A. Daly, researchers in the IDA Systems and Analyses Center, about their opinion piece, “Information Operations: An Understudied Facet of Russian Influence in Africa,” published on the website Foreign Policy News. The coauthors discuss Russian disinformation campaigns being spread via mass media and social media in Africa. These campaigns criticize U.S. and French security assistance efforts and praise Russia's ability to serve as a mediator and counter-terrorism partner, thereby undermining U.S. influence with allies and partners in Africa. As Russia works to forcibly annex a neighboring country, it's instructive to recount its checkered history among Alaska Natives. Russian explorers in the early 18th Century cleared the path for a period of influence that continues today. Alaskan landmarks still bear the names of early Russian settlers and the Russian Orthodox religion remains a touchstone […]
Writer, researcher, and Chairperson of the Institute for Global Analytics, Rumena Filipova joins host Am Johal to discuss her latest book, Constructing the Limits of Europe: Identity and Foreign Policy in Poland, Bulgaria, and Russia since 1989. Rumena speaks to how dominant conceptions of national identity have shaped the foreign policy behaviour of the Balkan states, Hungary and Russia. She explores the internal politics of European Union member states, the competing regional forces of Europeanization and their impact on traditions of national identity. Am and Rumena discuss the rise of right-wing populism worldwide and how climate change could exacerbate existing geopolitical tensions. This episode also highlights the way national identities can be in flux, and how activists and local community organizers are reasserting liberal democratic norms and their rights through protest. Ever since the North Atlantic Treaty Organization was founded, in 1949, the Mediterranean and the Levant constituted NATO's Southern Flank, with the U.S. Sixth Fleet the main striking force in the region. With Europe once again a hot spot, especially on the Russia-Ukraine front, NATO could find itself back in its core mission, having all but withdrawn from the Mideast trouble spots its member nations deployed units to over the last three decades. If that is the case, and the last regional state to fall under the U.S. European Command, Israel, moved out of NATO's area of operations over to the Central Command, what role is left for the Alliance in the Mideast, while neighboring Russia and ambitious China are more and more involved in it? Panel: - Jonathan Hessen, Host. - Amir Oren, Editor at Large, Host of Watchmen Talk and Powers in Play. - Gen. Klaus Naumann, Former Bundeswehr Chief of General Staff and Chairman of NATO's Military Committee. - Dr. Uzi Arad, Former Israeli National Security Adviser and a Mossad Division Chief. A bipartisan group of senators introduced a bill Thursday that would require online political advertisers to provide additional disclosures about who's paying for their ads, but the measure may prove a half-step toward preventing foreign adversaries from influencing US elections online. During a press conference Thursday, Democratic Sens. Mark Warner and Amy Klobuchar introduced the much-anticipated Honest Ads Act, co-sponsored by Republican Sen. John McCain.
